Horns bend-dont-break D is 2 for 2, but the number of mistakes they're making early sure isn't a good sign
-
1st and 5, 2nd and 2, 3rd and 1, punt. Ouch
-
I can't believe we're up after 1.
I can't believe we're blanking m+A after 1.
-
3rd and 7.
Throw for 5.
I'm really torn. Would I rather we go to a shitty bowl game (probably, yes) or rather we fire the entire coaching staff (ooh, that's tough).
-
It's embarrassing how poorly coached we are.

Apparently you haven't heard... GD created the decade's most prolific offense. Silly Internet, basement geek.

What the FUCK is the problem with Lou Holtz? That fucking idiot annoys me more than Brent Musburger, believe it or not.

I'm at the in-laws in Savannah, GA. Everyone but me went to bed at 9:00 Eastern (lightweights) so I'm watching the game and drinking the rest of the beer. Don't think this counts as drinking alone because there are two cats hanging out with me. I really don't care who wins--my loyalties lie elsewhere--but I hope it's a good second half. Just wouldn't be Thanksgiving weekend without seeing at least part of this.

How does a team, any team, go from having 9 NFL players on offense to 7 to 5 to 0?

What gets me is that Mack's recruiting classes are so highly regarded. We must be microwaving Kobe steak
-
Whatever.
We have no business playing in a bowl anyway.
Good luck, Ags, in a real bowl game.
-
Mack, Will, and Greg all return next season.
I can feel it.

Every week, ESPN makes me watch Pony Express and Jesse Palmer have sex in a weight room.
Why.
Why, ESPN?

We lose tonight and Greg is gone by end of next week.

Or boiling it.
Man, this offense is painful. Gilbert has not had his feet set on a single pass that I have seen. OK, his feet were set on that one.

Or boiling it.
You're both wrong. We're mixing it with Hamburger Helper and feeding it to a 6 year old.

The line sucks. The receivers are terrible.
That doesn't change the fact that GG does NOT have the best arm ANYone has seen. Period.

I didnt finish college, prick, because of Duke Nukem 2

Not fair. He's not even here to defend himself.

They have managed to construct the worst OL, the worst set of receivers, the worst running game and the worst defensive backfield we have seen in the Mack Brown era.

This A&M team is ok. Not great.
How the fuck, HOW THE FUCK, do you not show up with a plan to at LEAST beat these guys, your main rival, at home, on TV, to make even a shitty bowl? How. The fuck.

Did you see this? (http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/11/21/agents-leverage-and-confirmation-of-whispers/) Rumor that he gets to be involved in picking GD's replacment or he's out.

Was part of that plan to underthrow the receivers?

And please, Santa, have Britt Mitchell killed.

Can one of you guys who knows more about football than I do tell me why the fuck A&M was throwing the ball there on that last drive? Thankee.

GG is a terrible QB. Stop blaming everyone else. They suck too. But GG is awful.

Nah, they don't. Sometimes they'd have that shitty show on though.

It's so bad that even if some miracle of Aggyness pops up and Texas somehow wins this game, I can't be happy about it. Not because my wife is an Aggie but because I want this season to be over. Getting raped in the Nowhere Bowl by St Fuckstick State is a shitty thing to have looming in your future.

This team has so many things wrong with it, and some of them affect GG's performance, but you're right, he has sucked a lot more often this year than not. He doesn't seem to know how to get to that next level. And he was a lights-out, #1 or #2 QB in the country coming out of high school.

What a fitting limp-dicked end.

Well, gents, I've only really followed Horns football since 1994.
This was the biggest shitfest I've been a part of, including the 97 season.

Fuck. And now they won't get an extra month of practice. Next year is going to suck too. Damn!

Look at the bright side. No one's leaving early to go pro.

I'm glad you're a Titan of Industry because you're going to have to pay up.

It came out of nowhere for the fans, I think. The canary in the coal mine was their inability to get a yard on the ground when they had to, over the past 2 or 3 seasons, but this kind of collapse is close to unprecedented.

Oh, reminds me, I recently made some Thai curry with that canned durian I was telling you about and it did not smell, or taste, like wolf pussy.

You need to find a better way to let me know. Name calling and some proof of what a real man you are would be good.

CANNED durian? You can't go get the fresh shit down at the market?

come on... an entire 4 previous #2 teams had losing records the following year. And only 2 of them were service academies.

I'd call that evidence of a collapse that is close to unprecedented.

Oh, reminds me, I recently made some Thai curry with that canned durian I was telling you about and it did not smell, or taste, like wolf pussy.
This is encouraging. Someone gave me a bottle of ghost chiles and I haven't been brave enough to try to use them. Perhaps with some durian I could achieve fame or Nirvana.
-
I wish I could believe that.
Believe it, nitz. If you cooked I'd recommend you try some. Cooked in curry it's remarkably like heart of palm with a very nice texture and a mild flavor. No, I cannot get it at the market. I live in Panama, not Penang.
-
I live in Panama, not Penang.
What's the difference?
-
I'd call that evidence of a collapse that is close to unprecedented.
Nonsense. Why, it happened as recently as 1975.
-
What's the difference?
The difference in the spiky, green fruit is that they have durian and we have guanabana which is green and spiky and custardy but does not smell like wolf pussy.
The other difference is that they speak jibber jabber.

I've only been following this team since 1968 and the past season was the most fuckshittingly shitfuckingly season of fuckshitternessosity I can remember--it was like they shat their own dicks out their asses while simultaneously shitting pee and microwaved boiled kobe beef mixed with hamburger helper barfed from the belly of a 6 year old out from the dicks they were shitting from their collective ass. It was kind of fucked up.
-
Some very interesting speculation tonight about ESPN's pumping and puff pieces on Madden and Greg Davis, wondering if it's a pat on the back as they go out the door or an attempt to repair their reputations and perhaps a tip that they won't be part of any changes made. There were no corresponding puff pieces or gorveling mentions of Muschamp during the broadcast that I can remember.
This offseason could just be a continuation of suck.
-

If Mack doesn't make necessary changes(ie firing his "friends"), it might be time to look for a new head coach. His "coaching" this season was pathetic and the worst part is no player was ever held accountable for mistakes.
Gilbert was a turnover machine, yet another quarterback never saw meaningful playing time. Curtis Brown and Aaron Williams continually muffed punts, but they were allowed to keep those responsibilities through eight games of the season. Britt Mitchell has been terrible all year, but he keeps his starting job. Even better, they let him block Von Miller without help at least once tonight. The receivers have dropped numerous passes this season, but the only change at that position was to demote Malcolm Williams for tonight's game. On defense, how many times do you have see long touchdown runs up the middle before you try something else scheme wise or replace the safeties that are never in the picture on those plays.

Anyone see The Departed? Maybe Mark Wallberg will come to our rescue.

Odd ... I've never met you, but based on your posts here I would have thought just the reverse.
-
What a typical way to end the year. Tipped ball interception and a mental mistake on a punt return.
-
The losses have intensified speculation among fans that Brown will replace one or more assistant coaches, including longtime offensive coordinator Greg Davis.
Davis has said he doesn't plan to retire.
-
I expect the $10 to arrive in the form of a crisp, new bill.

GD's was more of a running tribute to his greatness that started in the 2nd quarter, I think. Lots of talk about what a great offensive mind he is, great QB coach, the success of the offenses of the past, etc. It continued through the rest of the game, to the point where it was sickeningly obvious that they were pumping maniacally. I don't know if it was because they were woefully unprepared and fixed on him as a glossy talking point or if there was something else going on.
At one point, maybe in the 3rd quarter, Gilbert hit a pass or two and I think it was Craig James who let loose with an excited, "That's a Greg Davis coached quarterback!"

that's hilarious, and gotta be intentional. i mean, as an announcing crew coming to town doing research on the game it must be obvious that the biggest local story is the fans hatred of greg davis.

17 INTS in an offense where 99% of the passes go less than 6 yards past the line of scrimmage.
ETA:
Gilbert with 6 y/a on the year! lowest in the big 12 among starters

If one of the three is gone, it will be by personal choice, not because someone was held responsible.
I'm not saying that gets me out of the bet, I'm just saying the bottomline is...no one will be held responsible.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
I just read that if there aren't enough bowl eligible teams, the Horns could still go.
Ridiculous.

Hold on - you want Mack Brown and the University of Texas to fire 3 or 4 high-profile employees and then let the public know that they did it because they weren't doing the job well enough to suit fans? I understand that you aren't satisfied with MB and the coaches saying publicly that it's their responsibility, but wouldn't them leaving, under whatever circumstances, be clear enough as to what is going on?
Have you no sense of decency, sir?
-
You might find this interesting (http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/11/26/judgement-day-update-on-whos-in-and-whos-out/).
The candid talks have now given way to actual action and specifics as it relates to who’s staying and going. As we told you in our last update, Greg Davis has come to grips with giving up the reins as Offensive Coordinator. If what we hear is true that hasn’t changed. As for the other staff turnover we’ve heard Coach Tolleson will retire along with Coach Macwhorter. Bobby Kennedy, as was first reported here, has other issues to deal with so he will be asked to find other employment. There is a possibility that Chambers leaves as well, but our source wasn’t definitive. The other 4 souded like they were set in stone.
As for Coach Madden, Will Muschamp has stated he wants to move in another direction here, but Mack Brown isn’t comfortable with letting his entire inner circle go and he’d like to retain Mad Dog until he retires. That situation is fluid because other sources claim Mad Dog is gone too.
-
y mas:
...expect Will to go after young assistants that “bust their ass” on the recruiting trail. In other words, everyone pulls their weight and is accountable for who they bring in. According to our source, these are Muschamp’s words.
Reassignments and retirements will happen after the Texas Football Banquet we’re hearing but could move quicker if circumstances are right with replacements we’ve targeted.
-

I try not to think about the Aggies much, so I didn't bother researching the easy answer. But is the Big XII's three way tiebreaker still the highest BCS rank? If OU beats OK State tonight, they'll all have the same record as the Aggies (ATM beat OU, OSU beat ATM, OU beat OSU), so that means OU probably goes in as the highest seed.

The only change (in place for this season) to the above is if the two highest rated (BCS) of the teams in the 3-way tie are within one spot of each other in the BCS, the head to head between those teams comes into play.
So if OSU wins, they win outright, A&M is 2nd with 2 losses, and OU is third with three losses.
If OU wins, there's a three way tie between OSU, OU and A&M. Currently OSU is 9th, OU is 13th and A&M is 17th. A&M's slim, almost nothing chance to win the South hinges on OU winning and A&M leapfrogging enough teams that OU would end up say 11th and A&M would end up 12th. In that instance, A&M would rep the south.
The most likely answer is that the Bedlam winner represents the south next Saturday against Nebraska.

Looks like he does (http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/12/02/coordinator-level-changes-big-cigar/), and it's starting to blow up everywhere. GD to new position, Tolleson and McWhorter retiring, Kennedy gone, maybe Madden to Bryant's spot. Hires by Saturday.

If the Recruitocosm stuff is to be believed, and it certainly has been correct on many things lately, the Regents will approve some big money today for an offensive coordinator salary so whomever it is will be a major name that commands over $1MM a year.

I suppose it means that Muschamp has to remain coach-in-waiting for the forseeable future or make a decision.

I suppose it means that Muschamp has to remain coach-in-waiting for the forseeable future or make a decision.
The preponderance of rumor has it that Muschamp is staying and these changes help to set a timeline of transition to him from Brown. I'd view the extension as a reward to DeLoss for his ESPN deal and it may or may not have anything to do with any possible transition to Mack Brown. Mack may not be happy with how his hand was forced on this and might just ride off into the sunset.

Nothing yet. I'm sure whatever took place was in Executive Session, so as far as The World knows it never happened. They'll have to comment sooner or later but they're probably trying to finalize the replacement before they say anything at all.

It's pretty funny that the DMN went with the story but the Statesman continues to ignore it. Even local TV has the story. Bellmont will have to comment soon. I'd be surprised if they hadn't already had substantial contact with the prospective hire before the meeting today, they had to know that this wouldn't keep until the weekend.
-
The Austin NBC affiliate has the weak, runny example of what passes for journalism these days:
Exactly a week after the Longhorns' season ended with a sour record, sources said long-time offensive coordinator Greg Davis is set to be replaced, according to the Orangebloods website.
According to a report, Davis seems to be out , though University of Texas Athletics officials told KXAN Austin News that there have been no changes at this time and that they would let the station know if there are any coaching changes. The Orangebloods website is an independently operated news source not affiliated with any school or team.
Orangebloods is not much of a source for this story and only went public with it after others already had. I'm sure they appreciate the publicity though. That "UT Athletics officials" refers to Mack Brown's web site (probably Bill Little), and allowing "they would let the station know if there are any coaching changes" in the story is just insulting.

Which would seem to mean (to me, at least) that Malzahn isn't the guy. It would seem like an incredible breach of etiquette to start negotiating with that guy on the eve the conference championship game that will determine whether he goes to the national championship game.

Looks like all the big-splash guys are spread guys, but they know how to get a running game going too.
ETA: Texas doesn't have the players to make a power running game work, but they might get something out of a Pistol or some I variation. We'll see.

Great question. I guess there isn't a consensus on Davis' actual weakness, just a consensus that he needs to be replaced.
Does OSU do a lot of the sideways running and passing?

If it's any indication, prior to OSU Holgorsen was the OC at U of H and before that for many years the OC at Texas Tech. He is . . . creative. And aggresive.

Yeah, and it's now to the point where it would be too much time and trouble for an entity like KXAN to actually try to find real sources to corroborate what really is just a whole lot of smoke and rumor without attribution. Just like in the early days of cable, we're seeing journalism sink to the level of something anyone with a phone and a computer can create, while we see the best of those outlets rise to something that is still far below what news entities used to be. Blech.

More last night on the vetting of potential OC candidates (http://barkingcarnival.fantake.com/2010/12/02/our-new-offensive-coordinator-will-be/). Sounds like there is a potential deal-breaker with Holgorsen, but this is a really good cheat sheet on the others in the mix.
-
After reading that article, I suspect that this could turn out bad. He talks highly of coaches most likely to bring a running game and a solid offense, but says Texas doesn't have the personnel and cannot afford to wait two years to acquire the personnel. So, these good choices are likely out. WTF?
I understand the Mack-must-do-this-quickly reasoning, but these are Mack reasons and not UT reasons. Terrible if they lead to settling on something less than the best option for the University as a whole.
-

He says that about Chryst and Shaw, but I didn't notice it carrying over to the other coaches he named.
-
He does say of Holgorsen:
He’s not the best long-term solution – he’s the best short-term solution. And that’s what we’re looking for given Mack’s timelines and our need for a quick shot of adrenaline.
Short-term presiding over long-term. Mack's timelines, not UT's. Could lead to a sub-optimal choice.
-

I think that's with respect to the transition and perhaps the ascendance of Major, but I'm just reading between the lines. I don't know if they could find someone who fits all of the requirements and who is also THE GUY for both Brown and Muschamp.
-
It seems like a lot of goals are in the background: Mack's need to win now, even at the possible expense of the long-term program; Mack's desire to get a wow guy who will give him another dose of recruiting adrenaline, because in Mack's mind, that is the road to success; some seemingly apparent desire to either appease or please Muschamp; and of course the fan's desire for goats, whether or not goats are the real problem.
Trying to fulfill all those goals with one hire is going to be tough.
-
I haven't been keeping up. How do either of these guys help with the power running game?
Or, hold on to passes thrown to receivers? On that note, I've been told by a few folks that the Swope kid who channels Jordan Shipley for A&M was very interested in Texas but didn't get an offer which was instead reserved for yet another 4 or 5 star recruit con manos de piedras.
-
the Swope kid who channels Jordan Shipley
this is funny. My dad and brother think he is freaking Wes Welker. don't get me wrong, he is a very good college football player, but he channels Danny Amendola, not Jordan Shipley.

I've been impressed by his play, without question, but he's no where near Shipley's performance level. Keep in mind, Swope is a Sophomore. Fuller draws so much coverage that it creates opportunities for the other receivers. However, of that second group, Swope seems to make the most "big" plays. Nwachuku and McNeal look like good receivers. Swope, McNeal, and Nwachuku are all Sophomores, which is very encouraging for the Ags.
I will be shocked in Fuller comes back for his Senior year. If he does, I think this team is going to be very tough next year.

At least he has had multiple years of offensive success at different D1 programs; that Chad Morris who is supposedly a possibility was coaching Lake Travis this time last year. I can't believe Texas would hire him.
Stanford's previous DC (Ronn Lynn, hired in 2008) was, I believe, running a bar from 2004-2008. Someone who had been actually coaching highschool would've probably been better.

In 2010 I think he was absolutely part of the problem. Complacency and laziness don't usually filter up from the bottom.
If he approaches 2011 with a "fresh start" attitude I don't see why Texas can't get back to 10-win potential. If he's taking the petulant child approach because he had to cut dead weight then it may be a very long season.
-

i totally agree. i think the entire program and staff were fat, complacent and feeling entitled. teams take on the personality of the coach, not the other way around.

i think the entire program and staff were fat, complacent and feeling entitled.
They certainly played that way. What makes me think that Mack didn't know how to deal with it is that it never changed.
Not after UCLA.
Not after Baylor.
Not after Iowa State.
Against any supposedly inferior team, they showed all the passion of a drive-thru burgerslinger at the end of a 10 hour shift. They actually showed up against OU, NU, OSU, and A&M. Those were all better teams.

Totally earth shattering. Is the inference that Mack allowed all this to happen so that he could blow up the staff? That's almost believable given some of the head scratching decisions that were made. Leaving a young QB in a game with 5 picks, not putting a tight end or fullback in to help a right tackle obviously incapable of effective pass blocking etc.
I think a change with the S&C program will provide real change…attitude, conditioning, entitlement, chemistry, etc. I believe real teams are made via this process….
Will be interesting to follow…..
-

I would never believe that. He has kept GD throughout. He would have never intentionally sold him down the river.
Leaving a young QB in a game with 5 picks, not putting a tight end or fullback in to help a right tackle obviously incapable of effective pass blocking etc.
I continue to believe they were covering for another reason that they wouldn't put Case in a game. And TE/FB basically doesn't exist on this roster. To the extent they do, they are just as incapable as Mitchell.

Yes, because most of the other stuff has been based on multiple sources with different angles. This is pretty much a reflection of how some players felt and I think you have to keep that in mind when you consider it. I have a hard time believing that Davis didn't create a game plan for A&M and that it would get past Mack, but I can certainly believe there were disgruntled players mouthing off that it was so.

I think he needs more and better guidance on playcalling, recruiting at other positions (esp. OL), and selecting position coaches. He's had, what, two seasons as an OC? One of them was at Alabama - which was, by all accounts, OC in name only, as Saban ran everything - and one at Rice.

mediocre talent there at best. i do not blame him for that, necessarily, unless he made the recruiting decisions concerning which RBs to get. he still will have to coach a position.

I think they're actually very well prepared - they're not talented. And the Major defenders would argue (I don't know how correctly) that Major hasn't been allowed the call on which RB's to take (example - Mack insisting on Chris Whaley over Christine Michael).

You win this lightning round.

a classic:
Day in the Life of The Applewhite Cultist
10:49 AM Wake up to the sound of answering machine and the caller laughing,"I'm not sure I'm going to name the defense as your message requests, but I did want to say that we've decided to hire another candidate. You are very...umm..enthusiastic. Good luck!" As the caller hangs up, you hear others in the background giggling. Your eyes squint and your lip curls. [censored]! Clearly Simms fans! No wonder they smiled at each other when you showed up at the interview in a #11 jersey and blazer.
10:56 It occurs to you that The Burnt Orange Hitman Posse would be an excellent name for the defense. Scramble for thick pencil and Big Red Indian Chief notebook to write it down. Can't find blank page as pages are filled with Applewhite essays, heart symbols, the phrase MAJOR 4EVER and the adjectives GUTTY, DETERMINED, HEADY and WINNER written over and over with your calligraphy kit. Reread essay entitled "What Major has taught me about love" and reflect on its final line...."Wherever puppies lick jowls, wherever sunflowers grow on windy dales, wherever people will help a stranger......Major will be there."
11:02 AM Morning weeping is finished. Touch Applewhite poster over bed and light candle while assuming a meditation position. You mumble a silent prayer and beg God to end his testing of Major. And for Chris Simms to have a serious industrial accident involving pipe fittings.
11:59 AM Log on to internet. Weave through [censored] analysis and threads about the team. Analysis, facts, analysis, [censored]....it all makes your head hurt. Decide Applewhite post is needed and write the following:
Our offense is joking! Joke! Joke! Look no farther than Chris Sims who is logging into recaveers and has thrown almost five intercepts. I guess it is because we do not want to win.... Other things:
Nathan Vasher is a HORRIBLE punt returner. Hello!? Catch it or whatever.
Our WR's will not catch the ball because Sims throws to hard and it hurts them! I know this because kids used to hum balls at me when I'd loiter to close to the football players in high school wanting to decorate their lockers.
Major's posture was amazing. I was screaming,"Major! Major!" hysterically all game and when he came in his karisma (korisma?) was amazing. He surveyed the field like General Charles De Gaulle or someone.
Hello!?!? Anyone else notice that Redding is a LBer now? I called this two years ago.
Babers. Get him off of the field. He has been embbarasing since the A&M game (which I also pointed out) and is small and slow. I mean, please.
12:56 PM Log back on to post and gauge responses. There are three Aggies and Sooners agreeing with you calling Chris "Chrissy." This is hilarious to you! You roll on the ground laughing. Two Longhorns with extremely exuberant posting names (HornsRockBaby & ChrisRobertsonShould StartBitch!) agree with you. Several Horn fans are calling you a douchebag. This hurts you. How could someone attack a fellow Horn? Aren't we all on the same team? These are the kind of people who talk about the OU game when we should be concentrating on Houston!
1:43 PM Go to South Congress to distribute Applewhite Literature. Ask people,"Have you heard the Good News of Applewhite?" Most people walk quickly away, but a handful of people stay and listen. The people that stay reek of alcohol and take your watch after choking you for a while.
2:08 PM Write the Republic of Suriname and inquire as to the feasibility of purchasing land for a commune. Surinamese officials have thus far ignored requests. Consider coloring in Suriname on world map in blue denoting a Simms controlled sphere of influence.
3:39 PM Watch Applewhite tape. '99 Stanford. Again and agan. Watch Arkansas Cotton Bowl and '00 Tech game to see if you can actually see where Simms fires the pistol at Applewhite's knee. HornsRockBaby told you this on private messages.
4:05PM Log back onto Hornfans. [censored] all over several threads which are trying to discuss Derrick Johnson, the running game or Greg Davis.
4:59 Clip pictures of Applewhite and paste them onto Leo DiCaprio and Justin Timberlake's body in Tiger Beat magazine. Feel all funny inside. Walk into bathroom with jar of Helmann's.
7:26 PM Emerge from bathroom whistling and sweating.
8:42 PM Write British consulate asking that Applewhite be knighted. Receive immediate reply! It asks if Major Applewhite fought in the Royal Grenardiers at the siege of Khartoum and what his first name was. Write back telling the Limeys to go [censored] themselves. Add Britain to Simms sphere of influence on world map.
9:07 PM More sobbing.
9:28 PM Sobbing, but now also muttering. Now in fetal position.
9:48 PM Listen to Cheap Trick song "Love Hurts" over and over on your jambox. God, that's exactly what it's like. Cheap Trick is so wise.
10:27 PM Watch Fox Sports newscast. No mention of Applewhite. What a joke!
10:45PM Watch Lifetime channel movie Not Without My Mommy: The True Story of Bessie Silverstein.
Inspired, you begin work on a script for the Major Applewhite story. Begins with opening scene of Chris Simms selling his soul to Lucifer while Applewhite leads Texas to the 1998 National Championship. Script ends with Applewhite walking into factory where you work, picking you up in your babushka and heavy work boots and carrying you out while Chris Simms claps and says,"Way to go Mikey.....way to go."
Place Big Red Chief spiral with completed script in a mailbox addressed to Who It May Concern in Hollywood.
1:43 AM Start making list of how society has wronged you.
1:58 AM Go to bed. Place painted beer carton helmet on head while avoiding dental halo.
Rustle legs under blankets causing static sparks and pretend that you have superpowers.
Sleep Dream of Major. Always.

Would hiring Leach keep Austin weird enough?

I think that's definitely possible. I mean 'connect-the-dots' as in that's what we're all left with in trying to figure this one out, there's no real info being leaked just yet. We're all just trying to guess by looking at everything else.

JS is now saying that Applewhite may be given a coordinator title but probably not sole OC (http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/12/08/smoke-and-mirrors/).
If you follow us @Recruitocosm on Twitter you know that a couple of hours ago that our best source denied that Major Applewhite would be announced sole offensive coordinator while rumors swirled to the contrary. We’ve since received similar messages from two other completely different sources.
Interestingly enough, they both threw out completely different coaching candidates as names they’ve heard we’d be in contact with. Harsin is still in it, but the two new names would be considered big splash hires. We don’t have permission to post those names just yet because there’s a decent chance this may be some sort of mole hunt. What we can tell you is that one of the candidates made me question my faith-based belief system. But so did 5-7 and we’re all still here. Reading the tea leaves, you can assume Mack isn’t ready to step down and hand over the reins to Muschamp and Major on their own.

i believe this stuff is BS being put out as a smokescreen.

if the Major stuff happens, it smacks of a palace coup by Muschamp and Applewhite.
-
i believe this stuff is BS being put out as a smokescreen.
BTW I meant to ask you yesterday: are you against Applewhite as OC because you think he would make a bad OC or because he doesn't have enough experience yet?

It does, and I can't see that making sense at all unless Mack is retiring and wants to hit some date on the calendar first.
-

the latter, although i have no idea how good he would be.
i also know that while he was a player, he was a prick who many on the team did not like. i still look at him somewhat in that way.
-

Opie?! I would never have guessed that. Those supporting him for OC have been repeatedly stating how much he is loved by the recruits and players

just telling you what i know. the players sent an emissary to MB to tell him they were not Major's team.
the Cult believes he is EVERYTHING.

Hadn't heard that.

Hadn't heard that.
Just one of many reasons Chris Simms gets a bad rap. I think Chris made poor reads at game speed, but otherwise, I think he was a hell of a kid who got a riddiclous "Chrissy" label from Internet Tough Guys who could never handle 1% of the shit he did.

His skill set was astonishing. So was Gilbert's, coming out of HS. There are so many things that can go wrong along the way.

See, people keep knocking Major's experience, but he has been the OC at two D-1 schools now and has been coaching since he graduated.
Harsin, who seems to be the favorite if it isn't Applewhite, is only 2 years older than Major. It's not like any of the options are legendary offensive geniuses.
For the record, I'm not pro or anti Applewhite.
-

He was the OC in Alabama in name only.

Where does this come from? I've seen several comments that this is a myth, and nothing collaborating its validity.

Having no dog in the fight, i never udnersrtood the venom towards Simms (and subsequent god status of Major), thought he was a pretty good college QB. his W-L record is superior to Major's, is it not?
-

Well, Saban runs the offense and has at every stop in his career. Major didn't call plays in Alabama, and that was the main reason he was willing to leave his OC post to be the running backs coach at Texas. That, and Saban's general douchiness.

I'm with Coach, I think this is smoke while negotiations go on elsewhere. The situations in Florida and Miami and their ripple effect may have a lot to do with how things shake out for a Texas OC.
Applewhite might be the Next Big Thing, but he hasn't demonstrated that yet, IMO, to be crowned at Texas. Mack has consistently overruled his player evaluations - if he won't trust him to make decisions on who to offer, why would he trust him to run his offense? There are too many interlocking parts here that don't seem to fit together.

Timely interceptions, comeback victories and the lure of being the #2 quarterback played huge roles in the deification.
-
This guy (http://texas.247sports.com/Board/21/The-Latest-1006-am-Thursday-460600/1) disagrees, fwiw
What I remember is that Major called the plays, but the scheme and preparation was all Saban, and toward the end of the season Major's reins were tightened significantly. I have no proof of this, just remembering what was said when Major was brought back to Texas.
If it goes into next week and past Tuesday of next week, then we expect the search to go beyond the first round of pre-Christmas bowl games.
There would be no reason to delay a decision announcing Applewhite later than Tuesday of next week if he is the choice by Brown.
Again, the reason we are calling this the “play-caller” position and not the “offensive coordinator” role is because we feel that there ultimately may be co-coordinators named on the offensive side of the ball to attract better coaches with the allure of more money and better titles.
Something we’ve maintained from the very start and still believe to be true, Mack Brown wants to bring in the very best coaches he can. And that means he has to find creative ways to give them better titles that puts the coaches’ career paths on a higher trajectory.
I believe that it'll shake out this way, a name co-coordinator will be brought on board.
-
I thought Saban as a defensive guy?
Yep. he focuses a lot on the DB's. Incredible technique guy. I learned a lot about cover technique that I'd never heard before (not from Arnsparger or any of his defensive guys) from one talk by Saban.
-
Where does this come from? I've seen several comments that this is a myth, and nothing collaborating its validity.
it is NOT a myth. it was widely reported to be the reason he left Alabama. he had no control whatsoever--only a title.
you are outing yourself as a Cultist.

well, that is hilarious. his former Rivals website was one of the sources on why Major was willing to take a huge step down to come to UT. there was mutual dissatisfaction between Applewhite and Saban.
-

I think Jackson's (biggest) issue is the horrible scheme that the Texans are running.

you are outing yourself as a Cultist.
Seriously? What the fuck is wrong with you? This is a simple conversation and you insert yourself as an insufferable prick, yet again, making this have something to do with me. With all due respect, go fuck yourself. With all due respect.

How much of this co-coordinator and HCIW crap can a program handle. What's wrong with a real hierarchy and clear lines of accountability? Seems to create fertile ground for internal squabbles.

Step 1: make outlandish, unsubstantiated claim with link to cult website
Step 2: get hammered for it
Step 3: respond in astonishment as if it were a personal attack
...
Haven't I seen something like this somewhere before?

i do not believe that co-coordinators will work. someone must be in charge.

MONSTER EGOS.

MONSTER EGOS.
This is part of an assumption I'm making about what happened to Texas in 2010. With that current situation, it seems it would be ripe for Pro-Mack and Pro-Musschamp camps to form. I'm guessing that factions can live peacefully together until there's conflict or adversity.
Again, just a guess on my part, but it would explain quite a bit.
-
There is plenty of speculation that he [Holgorsen] doesn't want to go to UT. But the rumors of his party lifestyle didn't start when Texas suddenly had an OC vacancy.
Boom. (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6589966)
