Per McTaggart: The Astros have reached an agreement on a signing bonus with first-round Draft pick Mike Foltynewicz [19th overall pick] worth $1.3 million, his advisor Bobby Witt told MLB.com on Friday. 15th round pick Jermaine Cotton (as was previously noted, though 'unofficial');
24th round pick Adam Champion (insert your McLane 'want to be a champion today' joke here...); and
40th round pick Jeremiah Minors.

This 'officially' brings the count to 19 (of 52) draftees signed, though Foltynewicz' advisor has noted that they have reached an agreement with the Astros as well, bringing the total to 20 of 52 draftees signed + 1 non-drafted free agent signing.

Berman at Fox Houston is reporting that the Astros have signed 1st rd supplemental pick (33rd overall) Mike Kvasnicka. MLB Draft Twitter account noting the Astros officially sign "Michael Kvasnicka (1A); Roberto Pena (7); Adam Bailey (23); Jacke Healey (27)". LINK (http://twitter.com/MLBDraft/status/16171676259). Jonathan Mayo (via Twitter (http://twitter.com/JonathanMayoB3/status/16171891995)) notes that Kvasnicka signed for $936,000.

That brings the total 'officially signed to 25, with 19th overall pick Foltynewics having (mostly) agreed to sign as well.

Does it seem like an extraordinarily high number/percentage of draftees have signed for being just one week after the draft?

Seems to be Heck's MO. Sign 'em early and get them on the field. They signed 22 of the 51 picks (http://www.spikesnstars.com/forums/index.php?topic=108700.msg276241#msg276241) within the first 6 days last year (25 of 52 in the first 7 days this year).

I find it really interesting that with all their signings so far, they still have 3 Seniors who have not signed. I always figured those should be the quickest cause they have no other strings left... this assumes they WANT to try to play Pro ball. Well and of course if they are not still in the CWS.

Being a Texas State fan, I can give a first hand assessment on Matison Smith, as we faced him twice this year.

He is a soft toss right handed pitcher. Who won't blow you away with any pitch, but keeps guys off balance with a wide array of different pitches. He reminds me alot of of right handed version of Jamie Moyer.

I'd wondered how the potential for hard slotting and/or a world wide draft in 2013 was being considered by the JaCoby Jones camp (after all, advising clients means discussing risks, and potentially significant changes to the draft certainly fit the 'risk' category). It comes as no surprise that such considerations are not being openly discussed by the Boras camp, but it certainly is playing a role as to whether or not (unrepresented) Astros 32nd round pick Austin Chrismon will sign with the team. Completely agree with your stance! We would not get top value with that pick and have to agree with Top 30 talent. We need to sign him but not break the bank

Leverage is obviously an issue, and might cost a little more, but no reason why the Astros could't get a legit player with that pick in the crop of kids that is the '11 draft. Again, a team is usually better served to sign the pick, but it doesn't mean that I can't act childishly and whine about it until that happens.

By the way, evidently he's looking for an above slot sign. Guess I should add a DUH to that, but anyway...

Most all of them.

1st rd pick signings since 2003 (not including supp rd picks):

All signed in 2003, 2005-2007.
Wade Townsend did not sign with BAL in 2004.
Aaron Crow did not sign with WAS and Gerritt Cole did not sign with NYY in 2008.
Matt Purke did not sign with the TEX and LeVon Washington did not sign with TB in 2009.

I think I saw that the #10 overall pick recently signed, so maybe having that figure as a frame of reference was enough of a nudge to get Deshields to go ahead and sign. Dominos and what not.

McTaggart didn't mention who the other 3 were, except to say that they weren't JaCoby Jones. Per Heck:

Compensation for unsigned players only goes through the 3rd round. So, the cutoff is Wates. The Astros would get a 3S pick.

From someone on the inside, the only "disagreement" was from Arizona's physical. Loux took independent physicals both before and after the draft and NO ONE else saw what the AZ doc saw.

He has interest in staying home (Houston), but has no idea if the interest would be mutual.

I hope the Astros/Heck take a flyer on him.

On one hand, seems like a wise move by Selig. Probably prevents a lawsuit, really helps out Loux, and probably doesn't set a precedent (I assume this won't happen often). Would like to have seen some justice against Arizona, but that would go beyond a tacit admission.

On the other, it does seem like an admission that the system allows a player to be fucked over, implying it needs a fix.

Eh... I see the fact that they are only getting a supplemental vs the 6th pick next year as adequate justice. You can't prove Arizona's intent. But you can ensure they don't receive unjust benefit from either duplicity or incompetence, whichever the case may be.

I guess I don't understand. I thought AZ getting the supplemental meant that they were getting the high pick (6A) in the next years draft, in addition to their other likely high pick.

I read that as supplemental first round as opposed to equivalent compensation, 6A, for not signing that pick.

What am I missing? Am I reading correctly that some don't think the AZ doctor really saw something, but for other reasons they were using that as an excuse? What other reasons, especially if he was willing to sign below slot?

He wanted to play pro ball. And knowing his family through a friend, he was willing to do a make good type contract just to get started.

He and his family were not expecting him to go in the first round, especially not in the top 10. So, at or below slot, he was going to make more than he expected to. He really just wants to play pro ball.

The former AZ GM overruled his scouts and push for Loux to get drafted over the protests of a lot of the rest of the front office. For whatever reason, they don't want Loux and would rather have the pick back.

Well, if that is true, then it was an even better move by Selig. He doled out justice to all parties, and sent a signal that there is no benefit to this crap in the future.

Lurch, I don't know what AZ's reasons were. I had heard that maybe it had to do with their state of flux at draft time (interim GM) and that they basically were voiding their pick (delaying it to next year). Maybe they are going broke. Besides, his injury history was known and if they really feel he is damaged, they owed it to him to do due diligence prior to the draft and pass him over. Levine has an article up saying ARI gets 6A in next year's draft and Wade quotes that Astros will look into signing him.

As I read it, it's a combination of the things you speculated about Arizona's state of mgmt/finances in addition to projections that next year's talent pool is very deep. If they get 6A, then they just hosed the other teams picking 7 and later. Every team disappointed in a current year's draft pool will now have a roadmap on how to defer a 1st round pick to the following year, if that is preferable. I would hope, "HOPE", that Bud recognizes the loophole and, assuming it's unintended, asserts his significant powers to prevent teams from benefitting from this tactic.

Yeah, not really fair to those at 7 or later next year. Perhaps he could have said that the team that picks up Loux will give AZ their second round pick for next year. Penalty to AZ and reasonable upgrade trade for some team I would assume.

It reads to me that Wade has a number or range in mind, given Loux's arm is fine, and that he'll try to sign him.

Signing Loux would definitely be a plus. I think it could get interesting if Loux goes out and proves healthy. The D-Backs make it sound like his injuries aren't small. If he starts holding tryouts in September without treatment, with clubs examining him and finding nothing wrong, it is going to look awfully bad on the D-Backs part.

w/ 6A, Arizona will have to draft a guy with high signability with that pick. If they don't sign him then they lose it. I know this goes without saying, i just don't think that AZ got a helluva deal since they will be somewhat limited in their negotions with who they take at 6A in 2011....the draft pick will have a lot of leverage.

Either way, the disparity among what Byrnes thought of Loux and what the rest of the AZ org thought of Loux must have been pretty large to not sign him and blame it on the supposed injury
