On the radio, Manzella hasn't attempted the bunt yet... I gotta quit reading the GZ.

Hunter's 9-26 versus Wainwright career. That must explain his batting third.

Pence flies to RF, Bourn tags to third.

I'm watching live and in living color.

It certainly isn't his stirling .095 BA!

Lee strikes out, AGAIN. Now 1 for his last 20.

He's really starting to get on my nerves.

"Skip" leads off with a soft single in front of Pence.
Ludwick smacks the next pitch into LF, 1st and 2nd.
Pujols lines 0-2 pitch to LF, Schumaker scores, Ludwick caught in rundown, Pujols advances to 2b.

Road Wandy? I thought the Astros ditched him last year.
-
1 out, 1 on:
Holliday bounces to SS, nice backhand by Manzella for the out, runner holds
Molina pops to Lee, inning over.
1 run, 3 hits, 1 LOB.
End 1, Jakes 1-0.
-
Road Wandy? I thought the Astros ditched him last year.
The leadoff hit was pretty soft, and he made a mistake to Pujols that fortunately did not end up in the seats. Let's not panic yet.

Pence flies to RF, Bourn tags to third.

Agreed.

Blum flies to CF
Feliz singles through the left side, shouldda hit third.
Kaz grounds one just foul under Pujols' glove; lines to deep CF, caught by Rasums, who shows a nice fluid stride chasing it down.
Q works a walk to roll over the lineup
(PS... the umpire appears to be very generous with the curve on the right-hand batter's side of the plate)
(PPS... just the sixth walk of the season for the Astros)
Wandy K looking (see PS)
-
I just noticed that the Astros have exactly 3 guys in the lineup today hitting over .200.
-
Also... Gameday pitch f/x disagrees wtih me, shows those curves catching plenty of plate.
-
How many double plays does that make this year?
-
Rasmus reaches on E3... Blum distracted by a portion of the bat barrell
Astros turn a pretty 6-4-3... that ball was not in Manzella's glove long
Ryan bouncer down 3b line, nice play by Feliz, inning over

Don't sweat it. Neither Lee nor Pence would drive him in anyway.

I was hoping he would just steal all the bases to home.

Bourn singles to CF.
Bourn picked off... slow mo shows he just barely beat the tag, but ump could not have seen it.
Manzella easy 6-3.
Pence rolls over 5-3, inning over.

I just noticed that the Astros have exactly 3 guys in the lineup today hitting over .200.
At least the leadoff man is one of them.

Shit, even Paulino knew to take the outside pitch to right field.

How many double plays does that make this year?
That also means there's been a lot of traffic allowed.

Wainwright flies softly to LF
JD breaking out the "Eny Cabreja" filler material a little too soon
Schumaker grounds up the middle, just out of Kaz's reach
Ludwick with a sharp single to LF
Fox puts the hex on Wandy with the "worst batting avg. vs. opposing pitchers" graphic for Pooholes; instant HR to LF bullpen by Pooholes.
Fuck you, FOX.

I'm a hopeless homer. What else can I say?

This pitching to contact shit isn't all that it's built up to be.

Why the switch? Because we have no business talking shit about any other team.
Lee flies softly to RF, continuing his "you can't trade me if I'm washed up" tour.
Blum lines over the leaping SS, trips over 1b.
Feliz rolls over 5-4-3.
-
This pitching to contact shit isn't all that it's built up to be.
That was less "pitching to contact" and more "putting a curveball in the middle of the plate to the best hitter in the game".

"Comebucket" is what this team smells like.
-
Am considering pulling "The Pacific" up on the DVR. Peleliu was certainly more competitive.

Rasmus 1-3
Freese lines to Bourn, amidst the discussion of his drinking problems
Ryan up, described as "too flashy" for the Cards.
Ryan bounces 4-3.
End 4: 4-0.

We're within a touchdown?

All right Astros. Couple of baserunners and a couple of homers and we're back in this game!

Around the majors:
Phillies went down by 4, promptly dropped 7 on the gNats. 7-4 thru 5. The Phillies are the best team in the league, and it's not close.
Cubs dropping a 9-5 soup bone on the Brewers. Doug Davis couldn't even make our rotation.
Twins leading their home debut 3-0 against BoSox.

Kaz bounces high to Wainrwight, 1-3.
Q bounces to 2b, holds it long enough to make Q look like he's actually coming close on the ply.
Wandy singles to LF
Lucas claims that lack of timely hitting is the problem. MM claims that lack of ANY hitting is the problem.

Bad news: Cards sweep Astros.
Good news: Imagine how much fun it will be to listen to CubFan when the Astros get their first victory of the year in Wrigley.

Wainwright walks
Schumaker bunts, fielded by Wandy, who nips the pitcher at 2b
JD making fun of hockey
Ludwick lines a single to LF, basically what he's done every time
Pooholes took a fucking curtain call after his HR, as shown on the "Coors Blast" or whatever the fuck its called. You just homered off the worst team in baseball. Big fucking deal!!
Wandy gives Pujols nothing to swing at, loads the bases.
Mills out... Wandy out, Lopez in.
-
Top three in the Co-ardinals lineup is 7-9 thus far, with Senor Pujols coming to the plate.
-
Fantastic. Mills just removed the team's most consistent hitter.

Lopez induces the 5u-3 DP from Holliday to clean up Wandy's shit.

pence had a great pitch to hit there, read its location well, and still tried to pull it. result-- weak-ass liner to center.

But how are ticket sales to Hunter's Lodge? You gotta think about priorities.

Mazella leads off with a liner in front of a diving Rasmus
Pence actually turns a little on a pitch, but it's a harmless liner to CF
Lee strikes out swinging. I'm nearly as sick of him as of Pence.
Blum pops foul to 3b by the rail.

For once, I can't blame them. The Astros, once again, are not remotely competitive in this game.
-
MLB At-Bat on my iPhone is giving pitch speeds to a decimal place. Because that really makes a difference.
For example, the pitch that Freese just whacked was 91.7mph, whereas none of the earlier fastballs got about 90.9mph.
-
Q saved a run. Makes Mr. Happy's comeback possible
.
Biggio could have thrown Rasmus out on that.
-
Molina grounds out
Rasmus wallks
Rasmus thrown out stealing on a phantom tag, but the throw beat him by a good second. Apparently a missed hit and run.
Freese ground-rule double down RF line
Lopez strikes out Ryan to close the inning.

tank commander going hit and run with no outs and a 4-run lead against the astros offense. strike out/throw out double play declares Q
The Astros may suck, but win, lose or draw, La Genius is a douche.

I wonder if Bill and JD keep talking about players, besides the pitchers, batting 9th their way of saying that is where they want Pence in the lineup?
-
Biggio could have thrown Rasmus out on that.
It must have been exciting, that out woke me up from a nice little nap.

Even the Rocket commercials are depressing. "This is a team, playing for pride, and nobody's going to stop them..."

So St Louis is playing their 7th game, and Pujols has 14 RBI. Will any Astro have 14 RBI before May?
-
Hey Limey,
I have a British question. Recently I was listening to the Gang of Four song "Ether," and at the end the guitar player repeatedly goes "There may be oil under Rockall." So I've heard this song several thousand times, but for the first time it actually occured to me to look up what "Rockall" is? According to the internet, it's some super tiny rock/island somewhere in the middle of the ocean between Ireland and Iceland, which the internet hints has some kind of symbolic or nationalistic significance to British people.
So, Limey, my question to you is: "What's the deal with Rockall?"

Even the Rocket commercials are depressing. "This is a team, playing for pride, and nobody's going to stop them..."
so are they saying that nobody's going to stop them playing for pride? what if they're playing for money? or for fun? or to impress nba-loving bar skanks?

Quick... without looking it up, how many walks have the Astros taken so far this season? Hint, the second worst Reds have 15.

Bingo.

Rockall is also the name of a ocean "zone" (don't know any better way to describe it) which makes schoolboys chuckle when mentioned on the BBC's shipping weather forecast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/shipping/) - which used to be given at the top of the hour during Radio 4's test match commentary. I believe it was the battleground for the Anglo-Bjorkian cod wars of the 1970s when both countries argued over who's fish it was in that part of the sea.

JD musing one why chopped liver gets such a bad reputation.
Wainwright hammers a double down the LF line.
Lopez out, Byrdak in, because you gotta go left-lefty when you're down 4 and couldn't score in a whorehouse.
-
Opposing pitchers continue to get on base.
-
What is the opposing pitcher's OBP so far this season? Quite sure its better than the Astros overall average.
A quick check proved this to be true. Wainwright's double probably puts it out of reach for the season. LaGenius would bat the opposing pitcher lead off in this lineup.
-
Schumaker bunts hard to pitcher, Byrdak gets Wainwright at 3b.
Mills out, Byrdak out, Sampson in, Towles in the 9 hole on the double switch.
Somebody tell Mills to stop sucking up to LaRussa.
-
Quick... without looking it up, how many walks have the Astros taken so far this season? Hint, the second worst Reds have 15.
Why would they draw walks? What pitcher would be afraid to groove the ball to them?

Sampson in to face Ludwick

Sampson gets Pujols to bounce out to SS, and could not have lollygagged to first any slower. If the runner had broken for home, they could have turned two.
JD says the Astros need them to hand them a game.

Molina two-hopper to Manzella, inning over.

The Cardinals also got Jason Marquis and Ray King in the deal. (Gave up Eli Marerro in addition to Drew.) Easily the best trade of Jocketty's tenure, in my opinion.

what a thief. wasn't marquis the big part of the deal, at that time?
-
Rasmus 4-3
Freese solid single
Ryan FC 5-4, then a clusterfuck as Kaz throws the ball past Blum, Towles scrambles after it and makes a sidearm throw to 2b that doesn't come close, Ryan safe at 2b.
Stavinhoa PH for Wainwright, strikes out.
-
what a thief. wasn't marquis the big part of the deal, at that time?
IIRC, Wainwright was a stud prospect
-
We're still hitting above .200 for this game. A stirling .214!
-
wasn't marquis the big part of the deal, at that time?
Yes and King was a big contributor to the bullpen, probably one of the best lefty relievers at the time. Wainwright was still a couple of years away.
-
IIRC, Wainwright was a stud prospect
He was. He was the Braves' 1st round draft pick just a few years earlier.
-
IIRC, Wainwright was a stud prospect
no doubt, after he mentioned marquis being part of the trade, that was the player i remembered from the deal.
why can't the astros trade all-star player pence for a starting pitcher, a reliever and a stud prospect. i'll also throw in almost any other player.
-
Only having to pitch eight innings on the road should save a little wear and tear on the bullpen this year.
-
why can't the astros trade all-star player pence for a starting pitcher, a reliever and a stud prospect. i'll also throw in almost any other player.
silly girl. that would have required objectivity and forethought.

Take what you can get. I think he's going to ask out soon.
-
I'll bet right now that Oswalt is our first player dealt this year.
I read in the paper this morning that he left the clubhouse without talking to reporters after yesterday's game, and my immediate thought was that he's thinking he's only got a couple of years left and this isn't the way he wants to spend them. Looking at this team, I don't think he'd veto any reasonable trade.
-
Motte in, Pence leads off
Pence takes a pitch the OPPOSITE FUCKING WAY for a single. See what happens when you have an actual plate approach, Hunter??
Lee grounds 5-4-3, officially takes the lead as "doing the most to damage this team". At least he ran hard for about half the line.
Blum flies to LF.
Final score: Cardinals 5, Astros 0
-
what trade limits does he have?
Full no-trade, has previously said he'd go to ATL or STL
-
i don't know what's worse: the obvious, or that i could have left work a half hour ago and instead decided to stay around and watch the rest of the obvious?
-
what trade limits does he have?
He's close to 10/5, but I don't think he's there yet. He will be by mid-year though, I believe. Dont' know what he has contractually.
-
Full no-trade, has previously said he'd go to ATL or STL
I bet he'd go to Chicago with his buddy Jake.

i don't know what's worse: the obvious, or that i could have left work a half hour ago and instead decided to stay around and watch the rest of the obvious?
That's some poor fucking judgement there.

Didja see Baseball Tonight last night on ESPN? Apparently they took an internet vote, and nobody's terribly confident that the Astros will with their first game anytime soon. I had my head in my hands.
-
I don't think the team is quite to this point yet, but a horrible record/high pick in the hands of Bobby Heck would speed along the franchise's recovery.

Taylor Jungmann, come on down.

Didja see Baseball Tonight last night on ESPN? Apparently they took an internet vote, and nobody's terribly confident that the Astros will with their first game anytime soon. I had my head in my hands.
That's your problem. Right there. You made the error of watching an ESPN production about baseball at all. ESPN.com SportsNation's latest poll was when would the Astros win their first game. I saw the 1988 Baltimore Orioles, which lost its first 21 in a row. I was in the opening day crowd as the Birds dropped their first game 10-0, with Teddy Higuera dropping a goose egg on them in their old Memorial Stadium.
Without Berkman, we're as bad as that club in my opinion. The '88 Birds ran off Cal Ripken, Sr. as skipper after the first six losses, but the new manager, Frank Robinson, didn't fare any better.

How's that kid doing this season? He looked sharp as a tack against LSU in the CWS last season.

68K in 56 IP, 2.88 ERA, .221 batting average against. I haven't seen him yet this year, but all I've read says he'll be a no-brainer #1 next year.

Whoever drafts first will sit at the head of each round in what I've heard described as a very deep and highly talented draft class.

I agree that with what I saw, he's a first rounder. He literally toyed with LSU. It was like a man pitching against young teenaged boys.
-
If Jungman had thrown strikes in the 9th inning of Game #1, we would have won the CWS and been back in Austin before LSU woke up.

Is he the kid from Temple?

Georgetown HS, although I have a vague memory that he may have moved there late in his HS career.

I don't typically watch ESPN baseball productions as such, but I was trying to catch the scores of the two late games that were tied and in extra innings. Normally when I see ESPN mock a team, I smirk and think, "Thank God that ain't my team/thank God I ain't a fan of that team"/something along those lines. Last night my head was in my hands because my smirk-less thought was, "Oh, Lord, they're talkin' about my team..."

There are a number of names already being tossed around for next year's top few picks. Jungmann in one of them, along with Anthony Rendon (Rice), Sonny Gray (Vanderbit), and Gerrit Cole (UCLA). In addition, Matt Purke (TCU, Rangers' unsigned first-rounder in '09) will be a draft-eligible sophomore. There are a few more, but those are some off the top of my head.
It'll be a good year to pick high. Just don't ask how many of these guys are represented by Scott Boras.

If we have to deal with Satan, then so be it. We can't just avoid the guy who happens to represent some very good ballplayers because *he* is a royal pain in the ass. Boras is probably not the only hard-nosed agent out there.

The fact that we are already discussing the 2011 MLB draft is ridiculous.

Well, is there anything else about this team you really want to discuss right now?
