Title: PS3 game suggestions?
Post by: BUWebguy on January 04, 2010, 03:52:36 pm
So I just got a PS3 (late to the party, I know -- couldn't afford the upgrade earlier, and I'm not a hard-core gamer). Mostly I stick to sports games, especially football and baseball.

Any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations for, say, the current iterations of Madden vs. NCAA Football? What about when baseball season rolls around -- MLB: The Show vs. MLB 2KX?

Any other games that this non-shoot-em-up-style-player must not miss?

Personally, stay away from Madden or prepare to use the mute button. The announcing team is fucking HORRIBLE.

The NCAA football game is cool, I think.

The NCAA basketball game is GORGEOUS. I still suck at it, but the graphics are just amazing.

The first thing I do when I get the new Madden game each year is go into the options and mute the announcers. This little extra work is necessary because otherwise you have to listen to Cris Collinsworth.

I haven't tried the NCAA football game, but I think I probably will next year. The option to create a player in NCAA, take him through college, and then import him into Madden for his pro career sounds like a lot of fun.

Can you get Boras as his agent?

Yeah, but it's a $100 add-on feature, and that's only if you can get the fucker to take your calls in the first place.

Another, unnamed, game was offering $150 for that feature.  Just saying...

I got it by pressing up, up, down, down, left, right, left right, pentagram, start.

Although you said non-shoot-em-up-style (which is what just about every top rated PS3 game is, btw), I'd suggest at least renting a Ratchet and Clank game.  It's a pure run/drive/fly, blow-everything-up game with some puzzles thrown in for good measure, but the way it is done is so cartoonish I've always put it in a different class than a Halo/MGS game.

I looked for some non-violent PS3 games, but there just aren't many among the top releases. But BUWebguy, if you can put aside the dislike for shooting games, you really ought to try the Call of Duty 4/Modern Warfare games, and Grand Theft Auto 4.

The best non-violent game for PS3 (and one of the best for that platform, period, IMO) is Little Big Planet. Best played in a group (or online, even). One violent one I'm looking forward to is the 3rd God of War game which last I heard was due out in March or so. Thankfully it's not a shooter -- I hate bothering with crosshairs in games.

MLB: The Show is the best baseball game I've ever played.  Far better than MLB 2k whatever, and it's not particularly close.  It might even be my favorite sports game of all time (sorry, Tecmo Bowl).

Flower is a downloadable PSN game that showcases the PSN's graphics very well.  It's more of a relaxation exercise than a game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a great game (not sure if it would be considered a shoot 'em up).  Burnout: Paradise is a fun arcade-style racing game. Also, Street Fighter IV is great if you enjoyed Street Fighter II.

As for party games: Buzz! Quiz TV (and the sequel Buzz! Quiz World)  is fantastic and you can download additional questions (for a fee) from the PSN store.  You can also create and upload your own quizzes for free, and play other user-created quizzes. And of course, Rock Band in its various incarnations is the supreme party game of this generation's consoles.

Since you are new to the PS3, you definitely do not have to buy shoot them up games. Here's a list I can come up with:
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Batman
Assassin's Creed 2
Dead Space
Infamous
Street Fighter
Metal Gear

And yes, some of those games do involve guns, but they are not typical 1st person shooters by any means. But if you do want a good FPS, the obvious choice is Modern Warfare.

And I'm a huge, longtime fan of the NCAA series and personally have always preferred it to Madden. But Madden has it beat this year, easily, from a gameplay standpoint. That's my opinion.

How is Assassin's Creed 2?  The graphics in the first were incredible, but I got really bored with the game play.

Oh, and Critter Crunch is supposed to be a fun 4-player puzzle game, sort of like Tetris.  It's available as a paid download but I haven't actually played it yet.

Thanks to all - I'll check out all these games. A couple more questions:

I've played the demos of the current Madden and NCAA games. The gameplay (particularly graphics) seems way better on Madden. How's the non-gameplay stuff -- recruiting, etc. for NCAA, team management for Madden? I had NCAA 08 for PS2; is the recruiting much different/improved? And I haven't ever owned a Madden; how is the off-field stuff for it?

I respect that.  What about baseball games, what's your favorite? RBI? Base Wars? MVP? (Anyone feel free to answer, I'm just curious).

I've never played the Show, but I don't think I've ever found a baseball game that I was completely happy with.

I loved Baseball Stars.  I remember playing as the Ghastly Monsters.  They should do an updated version of that game with modern graphics, it would be killer (especially the Lovely Ladies ♥♥♥)

I've never played the Show, but I don't think I've ever found a baseball game that I was completely happy with.

The Show is pretty fantastic, I highly recommend it if you have a PS3 (of course, you'll probably want to wait for the new version, it should be out in a couple of months.)  My only complaint with it is that it's way too easy to get picked off.

We're a Wii family.

I "won" a Wii in a raffle a few weeks ago.  Not being much of a video game person, I was pretty excited.  It's the type of thing I would never get for myself, and I've enjoyed playing Rock Band at my brother's house with his kids.  $500 in accessories and games later, I'm not so sure it was so great of a "prize."

I've got the sports package it came with, sports resort (the sword fighting is awesome, I feel like Zorro with that thing), rock band 2 and beatles rock band.  Anything else worth getting?  Mind you, I've probably played it three times over the last three weeks.

I enjoy the game "Bags" which is available as a download on WiiWare.  Mario Strikers and Mario Super Sluggers are also a lot of fun.

Alright, I feel like I'm about to be egged or something.

How do you download a game?

The Wii has a built-in wifi card, much like a laptop (to stay on-topic, so does the PS3).  If you go into the Wii settings, you can set it up to connect to your wireless network, the same way you would with your other computers.

Once you're connected, you can fire up the "Wii Shop Channel," which is subdivided into "WiiWare" (new, original software titles) and "Virtual Console" (older games originally created for previous systems such as the Nintendo or Sega Genesis).  Bags is found under "WiiWare" and it costs $7.

You can pay via credit card or Wii Points cards, which are available at your local retailer.  100 Wii Points = $1 US.

PM me if you want more info.

I think the 2nd game is definitely an upgrade from the first in terms of gameplay. The fighting mechanics have improved, and they have gotten rid of the annoying bums. I actually did not like the 1st one, but I do like the 2nd one.

Maybe unrelated, but have you seen the RBI Baseball re-enactment of Game 6 of the '86 World Series (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8547285560243429315#)?  It includes the Vin Scully call.  Pretty funny, although, it goes without saying, Fuck The Mets.

I played the shit out of it, without actually knowing anything about baseball.  I was a bit like Brandon Frasier in "Blast from the Past"

Adam, Age 11: What's baseball?
Calvin: It's a game, son. I can explain it pretty easily. See, there's a pitcher...
Adam, Age 11: Oh, like a painting.
Calvin: No, a pitch-er.
Adam, Age 11: Like one of mom's?
Calvin: No. There's a man who throws the ball to a man who has a bat.
Adam, Age 11: Oh! The nocturnal flying mammal?

Yeah, here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jejblUhw3hU) to bring back some memories. This game and the Dr. J vs. Larry Bird basketball game took up huge amounts of my time in the 80s.

Oh man, I spent many many hours in my frat house playing tecmo bowl.  We had entire tournaments that would run 24 hours a day.

As for PS3 games. Try Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.  It's a very realistic driving/racing game although there are not alot of cars/upgrades (compared to GT4).  The new GT5 coming out in February should be pretty awesome.  My son got Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for Xmas.  I realize that alot of you don't like the FPS games, but damn this game is fun.  I've gotten addicted to playing online.  Be warned, it is a violent game but I can't stop playing.
