Why are umpires in the Hall of Fame?
If broadcasters and writers can be "in" the Hall of Fame, umpires should be, too. Umpires are actually on the field and having an influence on the outcome of the game.
By the way, I was at Doug Harvey's last game and if I remember correctly, that game ended in about an hour and a half. He told the pitchers before the game that he wanted to get it over with and they'd better work quickly. Any close pitch was called a strike that day and batters went up swinging. It was actually fun to see.

a lot of pitches that were not close also were called strikes. if it did not bounce or go to the screen, it was a strike.

Socks and shoes are in the HoF, why not umpires.

Now that you mention it...

Broadcasters and writers *can't* be "in" the Hall of Fame. Players, umpires, managers and executives can.

That's why I put "in" in quotations. They have small photos and bios displayed in the HOF, not plaques. On a small level, they are in the HOF, but they are award-winners, not inductees.

They can be inducted into the Hall of Fame if they are selected, but they are not "in" the Hall of Fame just because they are awarded the Frick Award or the Spink Award by the Hall of Fame.

Just don't hold your breath waiting for Milo to confirm this clarification.

So, what do we think of Herr Gardener's chances?

This is a man's, a man's, a man's world, but it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl... cough... cough... gag... hack...
