science academy?

good stories about that from substitute teaching days:

1.  LBJ starts or use to start their school day an hour earlier than every other high school in AISD, which is something easy to forget when substitute teaching (bouncing back and forth between different schools).  so one day i had an LBJ job, and i got to the school and signed in and realized that school had started 45 minutes ago.  the front desk lady didn't say anything though, and told me what room i was in.  but i look at this teacher's schedule, and sure enough the teacher has a first period class.  not wanting to get in trouble i didn't say anything and just went out to the classroom.  but knowing this was LBJ, and knowing LBJ has a reputation as having some difficult kids (the previous time i substituted there a three-person fight broke out in my classroom), i walked out to the portable classroom expecting total complete chaos.  i get there, and to my surprise the class is sitting quietly watching the movie they were supposed to watch and taking notes.  apparently, it was an academy class, and even though no teacher showed up, the kids found the sub lesson plans on the desk and started class on their own.

My freshman year was Jim Davis' last season (1-9) as coach.  IIRC he retired only three wins shy of being the winningest coach in AISD history, so that has to mean something (1-9 seasons notwithstanding).  He works at Golfsmith now (or used to).

When I was in school I think there were only one or two Science Academy students ever on the football team.  Both were on the soccer team and served as place kickers.  I remember a lot of missed PATs and FGs.

i remember walking the regular hallways (not the sequestered academy wing of the school) there one day during passing period and literally seeing the regular students shoving these skinny academy kids around like pinballs as they passed, one bouncing into another and then being shoved by somebody else, and the academy kids just dealing with it like it was a regular occurrence.

They had at least a few Science Academy guys that played baseball there. A good friend of mine in junior high was their star pitcher. Sadly, they could just barely field a team because of No Pass, No Play. Man, their football team was full of badasses though.

My senior year I was the starting left tackle on offense, they had twin brothers playing defensive end named Mike and Fluffy (no bullshit). They both weighed 3 bills easy, and were probably 6 foot 1 or so apiece.

Fluffy took offense to me trying to cutblock him in the first quarter and kneed me in the in the back of the head so hard it gives me a slight headache thinknig about it now.

School colors were that of the Carmelite order: brown, yellow, and white.

Which is okay if you're taking vows of poverty and obedience, but it looks bad on football uniforms, and even worse on cheerleaders.

What a great thread. I love high school sports. Lots of memories flooding back, lots of helmets I recognize. I went to O'Connell for junior high school and rooted on the Bucs at most home games, which we played at Galveston's Public School Stadium when Ball High wasn't there- their home games were on Fridays, ours usually on Saturdays. We played several schools whose helmets I've seen in this thread, including Kinkaid, our "local" rival St. Pius, and Mt. Carmel. I was saddened to hear that it closed. We also played Marion Christian Academy, who was our biggest rival and closed longer ago than Mt. Carmel did. I believe Marion was in the Sharpstown area.

Were any of you Houston private-schoolers encouraged to despise Beaumont Kelly as much as we county kids were?

I've actually never been to a high school football game (or any other hs sporting event), but Katy ISD is going to build a new HS and stadium right behind our house and I'm actually looking forward to it, anticipating spending Friday nights there.  Might even put a gate in the back fence so we can walk.

I think we were two-and-two with y'all when I was in school in the 80's.

One of the biggest scandals at our high school during my time happened in my junior year. For those not from the area, La Marque, Texas City, and Galveston Ball High used to all be in District 24-5A together, and there was a pretty big 3-way rivalry between the schools. Here's what I remember of the incident, keeping in mind that I started high school over 20 years ago and I've had a lot of tequila since then.

La Marque school staffers arrived on a Thursday morning to discover that a big TC had been plowed, as in with a Roto-Tiller, smack in the middle of their football field. Emergency meetings were called all over the place to figure out how to handle the kids, how to investigate what happened and who did it, blah blah blah. In Texas City, kids went cruising up and down Palmer Highway, the main drag in town, and the street on which our school and our stadium just happened to be located. La Marque is only 1/3 the size of Texas City, so many times, La Marque kids would come cruising in Texas City as well. Usually kids went cruising on Fridays and Saturdays, but not that year... our football players and their friends were out in force that Thursday night, on the watch for any La Marque kids, even though they'd been warned by coaches not to start anything or there'd be hell to pay.

Friday morning we got to school and learned the rest of the story. Kids talk, often to their detriment. It came out that the culprits were actually Ball High students who thought it'd be funny to start the chaos, then sit back and watch it. The morons couldn't resist bragging to their friends, and soon enough, school administration found out. The rumble between TC and LM was avoided, but for the rest of the time I was in school, LM and TC had a more friendly rivalry and we both hated Ball. I think both of our schools killed Ball High in football for the next few years. In fact, in my senior year, we had to play our homecoming game- against Ball High- in La Marque's stadium due to a chemical leak at one of the TC refineries. All the La Marque kids who came to the game sat on the TC side and rooted on the Stingarees- previously unheard of. We beat Ball High 20-0.

Huh. I have no idea. I had a few friends in college who lived in the Sharpstown area and went to Marian, and thought I remembered them telling me it was in their area. I could be wrong, as I never visited the Marian campus.

When I typed my first post in this thread, I debated whether it was "Marian" or "Marion" for several minutes. I figured it was "Marion" but then it didn't look right. Iunno.  8)

So what was the difference in the two?

The one I remember is the one that closed in 1978 and occupied the same NE corner of 610 and Bissonnet St location of the current Episcopal High School--as you referenced earlier. 94CougarGrad remembers the other one that probably was or might have been in the Sharpstown area.

ETA:

From Episcopal High's website:

A complete campus, with buildings in need of extensive repair, was purchased in 1983 from Houston developer Wayne Duddlesten, who had purchased the 34-acre (140,000 m2) site from the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament. Formerly housing the Marion High School and the Congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, a convent and a girls' high school, the property had been vacant for several years before Duddlesten purchased it.

So what was the difference in the two?

If I recall correctly the school closed for a year or two once it quit using the campus on 610 and Bissonnet. At some point soon thereafter (it might have been immediately thereafter, I really don't remember) the school re/opened with a new campus farther west, off the northeast corner of West Bellfort and Gessner.

It wasn't immediate, and it wasn't much of a school.  IIRC, they reopened in 1982.  Soon after they built a gym, and until 1989 when it closed, the school was primarily a gym and a bunch of temporary buildings.

Their claim to fame in the 80's was Tito Horford and the Olajuwon brothers, Taju and Afis.

It wasn't immediate, and it wasn't much of a school.  IIRC, they reopened in 1982.  Soon after they built a gym, and until 1989 when it closed, the school was primarily a gym and a bunch of temporary buildings.

Their claim to fame in the 80's was Tito Horford and the Olajuwon brothers, Taju and Afis.

wait a minute, "the olajuwon brothers?"

Yes, they were two guys named "Olajuwon".  They were brothers.

I think they run a car wash now. A Catholic education will prepare you for all of life's challenges, apparently.

Yep.  Neither was very good, but Akeem (at that time) sent his little brothers to Marian.

Is Akeem related to Hakeem or are you referring to the One Man Gang?

They also are the largest franchise owners of Denny's with like 70 restaurants across the country.  They used to be anyway, they may not be in that business anymore.

They weren't as good as (H)Akeem, but they did play in college.  One at Indiana St. and one at UT-San Antonio.

I did not know that.

Are you being obtuse?  He was Akeem when he sent his brothers there.

Afis was decent in high school.  Taju sucked balls.  He got a scholarship based solely on the hope that he was somehow going to get taller.  Couldn't score on his own to save his life.

Afis could at least get his own shot.

Afis tried harder.

Yes. But mainly I wanted to make a One Man Gang reference.

And, continuing my obtuseness, Hakeem changed his name to correct the misspelling of Akeem, so regardless of when his brothers attended high school, there is still one correct spelling.

This is also true.

High school or college?

Either. But if they get to you in high school it's more effective because you're apt to be less skeptical.

Oh, I don't know.  I am catholic and I like to think that college is to Catholics what Rumspringen is to the Amish.  As for skepticism, it's just the thing to do, you know.  Question AUTHORITY, man, all the cool kids are doing it...

There were plenty of good reasons to despise Kelly back then, a lot of people in Beaumont did, too.  Catholics among them.  But I am curious, what was the basis for hating them when you were in school?

I really don't remember. I just recall that when we had our Friday pep rallies, there was an extra added dose of "kill Kelly" as opposed to "beat Kelly like we do the Houston private schools."

I went through the public schools, but my youngest brother attended Kelly in the mid-1980s.  It was horribly elitist, still is, but nothing like it was back in the old days, in the middle of the "Me" Decade.

I think they wanted to be a seperate country, almost.  The school won a ton of national academic awards.  The administration was used to being autonomous, and focused mainly on the wants and needs of wealthy donors/parents of whatever faith who had children in the school.  They watered-down the religious instruction, for one thing. (Catholic religious instruction was supposed to be a major part of their purpose, of course.)

Then, the DoB got a new bishop, a no bullshit, old school guy whose mission apparently was to reign in Kelly and get a handle on the financials.  The Kelly principal stood up to him in a school board meeting (I was there), treating him more-or-less like a clueless old man.  I was just stunned, she basically told the bishop to fuck off.  I guess she thought she had the juice behind her to do it.

Not quite, apparently.
