what about paulino?  when he comes back, assuming he comes back.

Too bad for Russ. He's not nearly the whiner that Cooper turned him into.

I wish he could have put up the numbers.

So Hampton keeps his job for now?

I thought that as well, but then remembered that Hampton is left handed, so he gets a pass.

Gervacio???  He has looked terrible this year, so I went to check the stats.  More than a K/IP and <.240 BAA.  I don't have any idea how he got those stats given what I saw when he was out on the mound.  Anyone see more than I did?

Hopefully it was conveyed to Ortiz that today could be his last start for the club.  Hate to see a vet get blindsided, or as blindsided as one can be who has sucked balls for the better part of the season.

I figure if they wanted him back up right now, it wouldn't have been Gervacio. I hope it stays that way, because if Norris and Paulino are on the same roster without another starter falling out of the rotation, they're both screwed. They'll swap places between the rotation and the pen so many times, they'll have no fucking idea what they're doing within a month.

I was hoping Bazardo, who I thought has some MLB experience, would get called up by the Astros 1st (over Norris).  But, he apparently pissed someone off.

They must think that Roy is going to be able to come back and pitch Sunday.

So, effectively, Norris replaces Ortiz.

If Roy goes on the DL, it won't be until after he warms up and pitches an inning or two on Sunday.  Have you not been following how Coop rolls?

given baxardo has prior mlb experience, any chance this is an options/service time issue?

Cecil Cooper: "It's unfortunate it didn't work out with Russ. He had a few games that were good, not enough consistency."

Russ Ortiz: "I told them I understood. This is an important time of year. Obviously, they didn't feel like they can send me out there."

Cecil Cooper: "We cant keep going like this it's killing our bullpen. Particularly today was really tough on us."

What are the chances Bazardo comes up in the near future to take Hampton's spot?  Also, what if Roy can't go Sunday and Norris takes the start.  Does the team call up Paulino or Bazardo to pitch in Ortiz's slot?

Looking ahead, it seems like the youth movement is in full swing for the 2010 rotation.  I guess this also means (for the time being) that Norris is being looked at as a starter, as opposed to the rumored move to the 'pen.

Unless... they're moving Gervacio into the rotation! DID I JUST BLOW YOUR FUCKING MIND?

seems like Ortiz could find a spot on another club coming out of the pen.   i don't have the numbers in front of me, but it seemed he worked pretty good out of the bullpen when Cooper had him in that role.   Hope he's able to catch on somewhere else

But i'm with the consensus here.  Ortiz and not Hampton?   And who the hell is going to start if both Oswalt and (obviously) Ortiz's next spot in the rotation need to be filled?  Norris will be filling one, but who will start the other?  Paulino just got fucking rocked by the Omaha Royals a few days ago so it seems nonsensical to call him back up.   I know a lot of people here have been calling for Bazardo...the stage almost seems set for that to happen if RoyO can't go

wow that would be a major draw. my daughter who used to salivate over pence is now eying Norris. It could become a whole new ball game give each rookie a section like they did pence and only play to teenage women and women in their younger 20s. also maybe a few guys on the girl side of the fence. someone suggest that to Cecil and see how long it takes him to fly the coop

I don't see how the team can keep Hampton much longer given his non-Pirate stats.

On the upside, with the moves that the Pirates made today, Hammy might be able to get his ERA into negative numbers against them.

Pence?   Really?  I don't get it, but then  I'm not a young lady either so I guess it doesn't matter.

Yep, lots of walks, nibbling, geological eons between each pitch.  Not fun to watch.

Probably not a lot of fun to play defense behind either.

this is one of the things about Cooper i like the least. Ortiz was classy. not so Cooper. rather than just expressing regret for the release and thanking him for his effort, Cooper has to talk about how Ortiz was hurting the team.

I like him. He's coming off of a couple of rocky starts but I think he'll be in the rotation either this year or next. Not an ace type but I'd bet an upgrade on Hampton now.

Agreed. Cooper has to resort to the use of hyperbole too. It wasn't killing anyone. It was hurting the bullpen.

You don't want the team to trade for Garland then. When he was pitching for the Angels I saw a glacier go by.

Agreed. Cooper has to resort to the use of hyperbole too. It wasn't killing anyone. It was hurting the bullpen.

The thing about Cooper's comments, IMHO, is how reluctant he was to let a starter get out of his own mess (the Anti-Dierker).  If he had to burn the pen to get out of a situation, he would do so ("he" meaning "Cooper").  So Coop is just trigger happy when it comes to warming guys up in the pen to get an inning back in line.  He can't help himself... he doesn't know what it is like to manage an game from a pitcher's perspective.  LaRussa listens to Duncan, Leyland was a former catcher, Scocia the same, Dierker a former pitcher, etc. Cooper is a former LF and First baseman... so he thinks like a position player when he reacts to in-game situations.

Drives pitchers (and catchers) batty.  So if Cooper is worried about the pen (and I don't doubt he is, I think he's sincere), then he needs to look in the mirror and say to self "I gotta listen to Dewey more... I don't know what I'm doing!".

And yet he does it without the flash, attention grabbing, or chapionship of Ozzie Guillen.  So he's low-class AND boring.
