Astros Live just reported that somebody on the team (I missed who) is trying to get the guys to grow mullets- a la the Turdinals' porn 'staches- as a show of team unity and spirit and blah blah blah. They added that Roy O has volunteered to grow a mullet and speculated as to how awful he would look with same.
Mullets? :o
-
Bad idea.
-
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
weren't the fauxhawks enough? ...anyway, how would Bourn, Miggy, et al grow mullets?
-

They could do the Jheri curl mullet. Hell, with Pedro back in the league, they could just ask him how to do it when the Phils come to town.

Find some New Edition videos on YouTube and you'll be reminded, Mr. Telephone Man.

What happened to just growing beards? Although I might add, Lance kinda has a mullet.

AP (Houston) - The Houston Astros announced today that retired player Jeff Bagwell wll be brought back to the team in the role of Facial Hair Coach, effective immediately.
"Our research showed that Houston has a surprising number of Quakers and Hasidic Jews," said Pam Gardner of the Astros. "We believe Jeff can put the Astros at the forefront of reaching out to these key demographics."

Speaking of hair... Footer has a picture up in her blog of JD with hair (http://footer.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/07/apparently_the_first_wives_gal.html). Not sure I'd have been able to figure out who he was had she not captioned it...

You know what brings a team together and provides unity?
Playing smart baseball, being in (all) the games mentally, and winning.
That would be an awesome display of unity and spirit.

A few games back, JD was commenting on how unimportant he thought unity and chemistry were. To his point, winning teams will suddenly have "chemistry".

'strosrays sez, Bullshit.
'strosrays sez,
It is time to come clean with the long/mullet hair pix, porn 'stache photos, etc.; or, for the ladies (and possibly some guys, I guess - NTTAWWT), the glamour shots featuring the feathered look, the Dorothy Hamill wedge cut, etc.

OK, people, let's see 'em. (If you need a place to host your photos, there are many free sites, very easy to use. These are on tinypic.)

I could not find mine, but I did find this one of Jim R (http://haysvillelibrary.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/rutherford-b-hayes-2.jpg) ... he was a little old for his senior class.

I ain't got a working scanner, or you could be subjected to Senior Photo 80's Big Hair. You know- the hair the girls permed so that when they used hot rollers, the curls would stay?
Mr. 94CG thought the mullets were a poor idea and suggested that the guys combat the porn 'staches by growing mutton chops. He figures with a "Fat Elvis" already on the team...

The 80's - bad hair, bad fashion, and bad music. Good thing most of my formative years were in the 90's.

So your senior year in HS was in 1974 and your freshman in college was 1982?
I have a pic of me in a mullet and Miami Vice white linen suit. I'll try to dig it up.

The 90's were probably...wait, no probably, without a doubt...the single worst decade ever in terms of music. If your musical identity was "formed" in the 90's, I feel sorry for you.

That's funny because I feel the same way about the 80's.

To each his own. I was "formed" in the 70's, which is to me is the greatest, most diverse, most creative period in popular music. The 80's were far worse than the 70's, but way better than the 90's. The 90's, especially the first half, were the low point.
-
You think the "oughts" are better than the 90s?

I think the 80s ought to be disqualified just because of Flock of Seagulls.

There was plenty of great music being made in the 90's. "Worst" really doesn't mean much when even the lowest times in popular memory have produced enough great music to fill the largest iPod. Plus, it's not like any of the great music from prior decades suddenly disappeared when the clock rolled over to January 1, 1990.
Oh, and I think JA's Photoshop skills have scared off anyone from putting up their pictures.

If it's Melisma vs. Autotune/Vocoder there are no winners.

I'll put the 2nd half of the 90's against the first half of the 50's in a fight to the bottom.

Too bad you can't see the shirt. It's a picture of a dude's ass, and in between his legs, there's a girl in a bikini sliding out from underneath a sports car. Underneath the picture it reads "OH YEAH." My mom "lost" that one in the wash soon after I received it...in fact, that might have been the only time I ever wore it.

Happy birthday, HH. This raises an interesting point... I was born 9 years after you, and I consider myself a product of the 80's. But all the really important shit happened in the 90's, if I'm being honest – just like you would have transitioned from a kid to a real live grown-up in the 80's. Which decade are people more a product of, the one from their childhood, or the teenage through college years?

This is probably why I thought HH was an 80s guy- because I remembered he graduated HS in the 80s. I was also born in 1977 and think of myself as 90s.

Depends on the person. I didn't graduate high scholl until 1989, but the touchstone for my musical tastes, cultural influences, etc is from the mid to late 70's.

Graduated 84, but I'm the same way, but I mostly attribute that to being the 8th out of 9 children--I listened to the music all of my older brothers did.

I was homeschooled and graduated in 1999. So Color Me Badd is still cool, right?

This is what I mean. I was well into Jr High by the time the 80's rolled around. Yes, I graduated HS and college in the 80's, but my musical tastes were pretty well developing by the time I was 12 or 13.

That's probably related to the quality of that music also. I shudder to think of what I listened to when I was 12 or 13.

Agree on the 70's, although I'm a child of the 80's, early 90's. The 80's, for me, had way too much "New Romantic" b.s. for me to ever consider it better than the 90's. I liked that early 90's grunge, quite a bit actually. Some of the subsequent crap that came out, toward the late 90's was just plain bad, regardless of decade. The current decade is a continuation of that awful, over-produced crap. I cannot turn on the radio for fear of the crap that I will be subjected to over the airwaves. Thank god for ipods/mp3. I find something I like, add it to the player and have hours of music I enjoy versus the alternating hair band schlock (I hate motley crue) and maroon5 type noise.
-
I graduated in 1977, a very transitional year, musically.
I am fascinated with my children's musical tastes more than mine, though; the younger one (12, he's the guitar player) is more of a hard rocker and 1970s oriented, his first favorite band was AC/DC, and Hendrix and Bob Marley are his touchstones. But the older one (16) knows his 1970s music, too, and his listening ranges from that all the way to new age rap and hip hop, so in a way he has an ever broader spectrum. I try to tell them both how lucky they are. The range of years they have to listen to, if you translated that back to the late 1970s, when I was in school, we'd have had to listened to everything from punk and new wave back to guys in knickers singing through megaphones. I never listened to anything pre-British Invasion back then, which at that time had only happened 15 years prior, or from the perspective of today, about the time Oasis was really getting big.
They have so much more to listen to and appreciate, plus they can talk easily to their dad and mom about popular music. My contemporaries and I could do neither.
-

Yeah, I think there's plenty of great music coming out now. Yet the traditional gatekeeper for bands (the radio) is tighter than ever, due to industry consolidation that started in the 80's. Radio is dying a slow death...all the good music was discovered in the earlier decades when DJs were allowed to play what they wanted. Currently, payola seems to determine what's played on top 40 and modern rock, which works well enough to generate album sales. But it's all flash-in-the-pan, I doubt anyone will remember all the crappy autotune popstars of today in 10 years.

This is very well stated. My musical tastes were influenced by older siblings, admittedly. That said, my musical tastes span the 60's up to the current offerings. Admittedly, I have a preference for a certain type of music, guitar driven etc..., but I enjoy other genre as well.
The 80's had some outstanding music. But to me, it was the turning point for the top 40 music. I find the top 40 offerings worse than the year before (and yes, I realize I sound like a grumpy old man)....

I listen to broadcast radio (I don't have a cd player or anything in my car) and there is very little new music played at all on the radio. Popular music today is made popular by television or other avenues. Radio is strictly about promoting back catalogs with the exception of the hip-hop/r&b station and the country station.

Overlap, plus a lot depends on which '70s you were a child of.
My wife is a child of the '70s. When we married, were intermingled, among other things, our albums collections. Which meant the Captain and Tennille slid in there on the shelf, right next to Doc At The Radar Station (http://www.freewebs.com/teejo/disco/14doclp.jpg). Bizarre juxtaposition.

That's interesting. I was born in 1977, but consider myself pop-culturally to be a product of the '90s. I figured my culturally formative years spanned from middle school though college, which is pretty much 1988 - 1999. High school and college were exclusively in the '90s. Guess I didn't really establish my musical tastes until sophomore year of high school and beyond.
Happy birthday, HH.

Dick: I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological?
Rob: No...
Dick: Not alphabetical...

Yeah some, but not really until a little later. Didn't start listenting to Petty until I was in Jr. High, and buying records on my own. We had to steal Skynyrd and Edgar Winter records from my best friend's older brother.
