Title: Jon & Kate
Post by: MusicMan on June 23, 2009, 09:12:03 am
If you watch this show...
If you buy the endless supermarket tabloids/US weekly/whatever with them on the cover...
If you remotely give a damn and thereby keep feeding this endless cycle...

Seriously, please ask yourself "Why?  Why am I supporting this?  Aren't there 10,000 better things I could be doing with my life?"

This will be the first step towards getting these people off the news and into therapy.

most of the money made will end up being spent by years in therapy for all the children. they are the victims

IMO, folks who choose IVF and are open to the risk of multiples, should have home studies done the same as those who choose to adopt.

There needs to be some medical ethics applied here.

Well, I'll take it a step further.   Why does ANYONE give a fuck about celebrities?   Who cares who they date or where they hung out last night?   How is this "news" and how is it relevant to your life in any manner?

I'd almost accept a "living vicariously" answer, but...you're not.  You don't even know what most of the shit these people are doing means

Why do so many Americans piss away so much time and money per year following 2nd hand accounts and images of celebrities (or in this case, PSUEDO-celebrities)?

I used to like watching the show because I thought the kids were cute.  But, I haven't paid for ANY part of their life other than what I pay monthly for my cable.

I am sorry to see any marriage end though.  But, I haven't lost sleep over them.

I always found iReporter terribly insulting.   I get the point, and it seemed like a great idea.   What if we had people who are ACTUALLY there who can tell us what's happening.

But that's not what it is now.   Now, it's just twitter with video.   Fucktards giving their untrained account of shit that may or may not be happening.

I think I liked it more when my news came from people who had some training and/or experience.   I mean, even this site feels a lot more legit of a way to get news than iReporters.

I'll go ahead and edit the Wiki while I'm at it.  MSNBC just called to ask why I didn't call them first.

Really, just when I thought there was one place on the web safe from all this shit...

I think modern people love celebrities like the ancient people must have loved their many gods.  But their gods were much cooler...

Aeshylus: Hey Atreocles!  Guess what I heard at the Agora whilst I was waiting in line to exchange my sheep for myrrh?

Atreocles: What's that?

Aeshylus: Hercules is at it again!  He ripped a lion apart with its own claws and made it into a cloak!

Atreocles: No way!   I can't wait for that to be inscribed onto a tablet!

For 10 years now, my brother-in-law has tried to get my sister, who is very smart, to stop her beloved subscription to People magazine and to start reading more "serious issue" magazines like the Economist and whatnot.  This effort has failed completely, as far as I know.  He, on the other hand, seems to be remarkably well-informed about about the lived of Paris Hilton, Jennifer Aniston, Britney Spears etc.   This amuses me to no end.

eh, it's entertainment for some people.  Looking at the top left hand side of my screen, I see I've spent 27 days, 12 hours and 13 minutes of my life reading posts by strangers on a site dedicated to grown men playing a kids game.  We like info about grown ups that play games.  Other people like info about grown ups that get to play let's pretend.  One can't be all Economist all the time.

Not justify it, but I know that info from osmosis.  You can't watch tv, read online news, listen to the radio, or move about the world in general without being over-whelmed with nonsensical factoids about people I have zero interest in knowing, meeting, or spending time with.

And what does painting this forum pink and whatnot have to do with what I said?

Alkie was asking about lower calorie non-girly drinks to get sloshed on, and I came up with appletinis and midori sours. It was pointed out that those are girly drinks.

Couples are expecting, but the woman is the one pregnant, IMO :)

Sometimes when I make a run to the local grocery store to pick up some necessary items, going through the checkout line and seeing all these celeb magazines that I have absolutely no clue who these folks are is kinda... refreshing.  Woo-hoo!  I don't know who Jon&Kate are!!!  *phew*  I also did not know that some singer or other was breaking up with the other singer or other because he was beating her (physically) but now they're back together because she forgave him.  Whaaa?  Who are these people and why should I care?

But not to be a snob or anything, it doesn't really take long to figure out what everyone is talking about and understand what is being said.  Then I go back to not paying attention to the whole thing.

If your husband was caring and attentive to your needs (aka did every crazy think you asked him to while not holding your crazy hormonal mood swings against you), then he earned the right to be pregnant with you, IMO.  The longest ten months of my life...but WELL worth every minute of it in the long run.

I'm pretty sure my husband would never claim that he or "we" were pregnant. That was my claim exclusively. Totally worth it -- I'm with you on that :) Current proof (http://www.theduttonfamily.com).

I love my wife.   I love my kid.   I honestly can't imagine doing all that again (another kid), especially at this point in my life.   Even to lose weight.

Thank you, I just got really nauseated.

We're all dumbasses for even reading this thread.

I don't actually spend much time keeping up, but you really don't have to.  I know all kinds of celebrity scoops just from picking it out of the air, from overheard TV shows, other peoples' conversations, etc.  I am always amazed at how much I actually do know about this stuff, given that I am not really interested and usually try to ignore or avoid it, if possible.

But, I am comforted to know it is out there.  It is hilarious to think people make whole careers out of covering "stars."  Why, without the whole celebrity worshipping apparatus, we wouldn't have had Pat O'Brien, disgraced former CBS Sports reporter, mumbling on his Access Hollywood co-worker's voicemail. . .ohbabybabyyou'resonastyiwanttofuckyouooohyeahbabyiwantyouyeah. . .

The whole celebrity following industry and those who are the major consumers of celebrity news are easy to look down on and make fun of, which is nice.  But they can also give insights into human nature.  Look at the whole cycle of building up Britney Spears, then tearing her down and watching in horror/fascination as she understandably (I think) spun out and headed for the wall. . . only to suddenly shift completely the other way and facilitate and then celebrate her heroic and heart-warming comeback.  Aeschylus and Sophocles and the rest of those motherfuckers would have been proud to have come up with a plot line like that one.

Finally, a certain percentage of our fine populace needs this stuff to distract them from having actual thoughts.  If they didn't have Entertainment Tonight and Nancy Grace and National Enquirer and TMZ, they would have a lot of time on their hands, and maybe start thinking up ways to make this a better world and shit.  Then we'd really be in trouble.

I'll bet the Founding Fathers would have seen Geraldo Rivera and his ilk as being beneficial to the republic, if in an admittedly fucked-up sort of way.

When WE were expecting our first child, I got pulled over by a trooper on the way to my in-laws to tell them the good news.  Here is the dialog:

Trooper:  Where are you going in such a hurry?
Me: We're on our way to her parent's house to tell them we're pregnant?
Trooper: "We're pregnant?"
Me: Well, she is pregnant.  I am just along for the ride.
Trooper: Good. If you were pregnant, I wanted to see some proof.
Me & Wife: (nervous laughter)
Trooper:  I am gonna let you go with a warning.  Slow down and have a good day.
Me: Thank you very much.
