Hey, I just heard Kevin Kennedy say they will be interviewing Phil Garner and talking about the current Astros situation and what it's like to work in the Astros org. Should be on XM/Sirius shortly.

A recap would be OUTstanding.

Did anyone hear it? I listened for the last hour or so, except for about 2 minutes, and I didn't hear anything. Nor did I even hear them say "we'll be talking to Phil Garner" or "We'll talk to Phil Garner in a second." I guess he must have cancelled? I dunno, I'll keep listening. I did learn that the Rockies are firing Clint Hurdle today.

Well, show's over. Nothing. Goddamnit, I just listened to 2 hours of Kevin Kennedy.

Sucker.
Maybe it's some other day?

Ed Wade was on the Mongoloids of the Midday today. I had to hold my nose while I listened. I almost lost it when John-Lo said "we ask the tough questions around here, we're not afraid". They talked about Cooper, however, remember that Ed Wade spent years as a PR man. He was slick today... but if you want to read between the lines, he said something very interesting. He talked about the rule in the MLB about the clubhouse must be opened to the media ten minutes after a game. "It's hard to be at your best sometimes under those conditions and you're not always going to say the right thing". When he said that, I paused for a moment to let it sink in.
Did he call Cooper out, but made it a soft landing by saying it happens to all managers nowadays, no big deal?

They actually said "coming up next" right before I posted the topic, and teased it a couple of times again, then nothing. Unless they did some magically quickie 2 minute interview while I was heating up my lunch I think he must of cancelled, or maybe they decided that the Clint Hurdle story was bigger and spent too much time on that. They should have said something. Guess I'll write them an email and see what happened.

was it said in reference to the oswalt post-game comments?
or just in general?

Ed Wade is slick. The conversation was about Cooper primarily, but they talked about the Oswalt affair as the last centerpiece of the Cooper conversation (asked by Ted DeLuca). In essence, acknowledging that it is/was an issue and Cooper made a mistake (my interpetation) and of course then summarily brushed it aside with the "it's happens, you move on, no one is perfect" type of add-on phrases, also that Cooper is wound a little tighter and needs to let it go as soon as the game is over.

i couldn't get the link to work
but
obviously this has been discussed between owner and gm
it would seem they are both saying the right things right now
although wade's comments are less "stay the course"
and seem a little more human by comparison
hopefully drayton thinks they are on the same page
but wade is skipping ahead one or two chapters...

A recap would be OUTstanding.
The emphasis is like this - outSTANding.
Or, alternately, OUTSTANDING!
See?

If you want to capture the proper tent revival cadence it sure does.

OK, so I listened today and they actually talked to Garner, here's how it went:
Garner said he is in Panama City playing golf and chess. Remarks that he's not getting better at either one since his "retirement."
Casey Stern asks him what is meant by managers "losing the clubhouse." Garner doesn't know, he says that sometimes a superstar will agitate with management to replace the manager. Garner says firing the manager is almost never the solution for clubhouse problems. He wishes managers had more stability and support from ownership. Players will listen more closely if they know the manager is around for the long haul. He mentions that Tony La Russa barred Ozzie Smith from the Cards' clubhouse (they haven't gotten along since TLR benched Smith in 1996). Garner says that without support from ownership, he'd have been thrown to the wolves after that move.
Stern follows up with a question about Oswalt, specifically if he's going to go to the White Sox (didn't they already read what Peavy said?). Garner says Oswalt would probably agree to be traded, but Atlanta was the only place he could realistically see him going. He also said the Astros were always slow starters and not to count them out yet.
So, that's that. I kinda wish they would have talked more about the Astros' current situation, but it's always good to hear Scrap Iron's voice. A guy that's good with the media and good with players...and hey, he's free nowadays. Maybe Drayton should give him a call.
