Before Taras comes in here and drops the "a-hole" hammer on Ms. Footer (and she deserves it... ahum... hopefully you know what I mean by that!), we should take a moment to realize that the end of an era happened today. Last night, Ms. Footer submitted her last report for MLB.com on the Astros. Nice of the Astros to provide a "win one for the Gripper!" (pun intended) performance... but I digress. So the stylings of Footer when describing the on-field goings on are no more.
Sad.
However, she will be starting her new gig on Monday, so a new day dawns. Being the Director of Social Media (don't know the title exactly and I'm too lazy right now to go look it up) for the Houston Astros sounds very exciting and a good challenge for her to tackle. So as in life, things change all the time. "The only constant, Ray, is baseball" (gratuitous Field of Dreams reset). Alkie, pravata, Footer... which one is not the same? All are very similar in that at the SnS we're happy for them, sad for us. Okay, we're selfish bastards (and that includes the women-folk too), if we could, we would do something radical like start an online petition to keep Footer right there typing reports of a Berkman bomb, a Pence running gaff, a Bourn spectacular catch, a Lee plowing over a teammate, a Tejada keystone kop approach to fielding and most of all a Matsui actual sighting on the field.
But alas, we have no such power. All we have is gratitude, for all of them, especially Ms. Footer for the job well done all these years. Stay dreamy my friend!

Indeed. Well done these last few years, Ms. Footer. We've enjoyed your candor, especially in those 11:38pm submissions before your editors got a hold of 'em and could always trust that you would report on the action, dig up info on the team and never insert yourself into the picture. For that, we are grateful and thankful.
That said, we are all standing here with our Blackberry's, Trio's, Laptops, Palm Pilots, iPhones, workstations, etc... waiting impatiently for you to tell us where to point them to load up your blogs, tweets, forums, albums and whatever media your team produces. Just let us know. We're waiting. Right here. Impatiently.

I played in a band once upon a time with a guy who was Paul Young's drummer for a couple of world tours. He had lots of stories. He was a great guy, this drummer Tommy. I have never met a more frequently positive person. 'Have you ever heard of Such-and-Such a band?' one might ask? My answer would surely be, Yeah, they suck. Tommy would surely say, Yeah, they're great! Love that record!' Etc.
He was married to a German woman who was a huge star in Europe based on some sort of Coca-Cola commercial she'd sung. (At least this is the story insofar as I understood it.) The upshot was Tommy spent six months living and recording in Peter Gabriel's studio in Bath. He had lots of stories about that, too. He'd wander down the hall and suddenly there was Rock Star X standing there. He'd show up to the dining room for lunch and there's Rock Star Y. Etc.
But his best stories were of a different bent. Enjoying the company of a lady of an evening and only realizing that she had a colostomy bag the next morning. Etc.
The best thing about good old Tommy, though, I think, was his incredible scatalogical fixation. I have never seen someone so delighted by shit in my life. I remember his laughing himself into hysterics at the idea of 'hanging his monkey butt over the edge' of a tenement and shitting on the passersby below.
I used to sit in a van with this fellow for hours and hours every day. I guess the guys in Paul Young's band traveled separately.

Aw, man. I gotta see that when I get home. I had Paul Young since No Parlez (ie: BEFORE covering H&O). Good good stuff. Wish he were still singing. His cover of "Wherever I Lay My Hat" is just terrific.

As a charter signatory on The Footer Infallibility Doctrine, I have had tremendous difficulty reconciling my feelings concerning your decision. On the one hand, you made the decision, so it must be correct. On the other hand, things that involve Twitter are inherently wrong and distasteful. So conflicted...
Regardless, your work at MLB.com will be sorely missed by many. We've all been extremely fortunate to have a beat reporter of your caliber covering the team we love for so long. Best of luck to you, and thanks.

When I took this job, my first thought was "Oh my God, I can't believe I am leaving MLB.com." My second thought was (and I am not b-s-ing on this), "most fans are going to love what we do with this new gig. Orangewhoopass (sorry, that's what you'll always be to me) is going to hate this."
Thanks for the really nice, really unique sendoff. I don't know why everyone is calling me A-hole, but I am assuming it's said with affection, stemming from some sort of joke I missed over the years, much like that guy Cabrera. Considering my best friend from my growing up years called me F---house, and I called her F---face (without the dashes), and we referred to the bad kids who lived down the street and did drugs as "Neighbor Hoods," I can deal with A-hole. In fact, I've dealt with several A-holes over the years, so the term has a ring to it.
This is the web site to surf when you need to talk stats, the nitty gritty, the fifth inning, the why-the-hell-did-this-guy-pinch-hit-when-this other-guy-clearly-hits-lefties-better-with-runners-in-scoring position-type-of-conversation. That is why of all people, you might not warm up to my new gig right away. The official title is Sr. Director of Digital Media. In layman's terms, I'll be blogging, Twittering and Facebooking my way through the Major Leagues. Hard news, breaking news and any other kind of news is now Brian McTaggart's responsiblity. I'm hoping to bring the story within the story, to make the fans feel like they're there, even when they're not. I don't know if you all will have much use for it, but this job is going to be -- gasp -- fun! And interesting to Joe Fan. You are are not Joe Fan -- you're more locked in, more knowledgeable, and more analytical. But I also believe you might get a kick out of some of the insider stuff that I provide, even if it's not stat-driven.
So thanks for the laughs over the years. Even though I didn't participate in the discussion, I was reading, and agreeing, and laughing. The Oswalt restaurant thread is Hall of Fame worthy.
I leave MLB.com with sadness, but I know I did the right thing. Without going too far into it, the Elvis Costello lyrics are pretty close -- the world is killing me.
But it's about to get a heck of a lot better.
