Really underwhelming line-up. Then again, that's merely one man's opinion.

Mine too. I must be the only guy in the world who thinks Pearl Jam is the most ridiculously overrated band since Nirvana. And I wouldn't mind Dave Matthews Band if it weren't for Dave Matthews. Woulnd't mind seeing Eek-a-Mouse though.
-
I'm completely underwhelmed. Not much there that would make me go through the effort required.
-
No love for the Beastie Boys? Kings of Leon? Sonic Youth? Arctic Monkeys? B-52s? Lily Allen? Scabs?
Those are some solid gone acts, Daddy-o! I'll probably be there if other activities do not restrict me!

I might try and catch a late night set for Phoenix or Girl Talk, but there's nothing there to inspire me to noodle with dirty hippies, be pushed about by shirtless frat dudes, and swallow dust for 3 days.
-
Dave Matthews and Pearl Jam aren't great headliners, imo. They have their fans though. There's several bands I'd like to see in that lineup, but each one would be a lot better seeing at a smaller venue, for cheaper and for playing longer than they do at ACL. Then again, ACL maybe the only chance to see most of 'em.

It can be a beating. The heat, the cost, so many people packed in.

Do what I do and dress like a sheik! It's comfortable, and the (intoxicated) ladies love it!

Sure, but not enough for flight, hotel, ticket, etc. If I lived in Austin, you bet.

Heh.
Made me think of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAkfHShATKY
(filmed in Austin, including a random old apartment pool in north campus)

I saw Arctic Monkeys at the '07 ACL and concluded that they should be beaten to death with shovels.
-
I ignored the top line(s) and really like the undercard.
Kings of Leon
Toadies
B-52s
Lily Allen
Arctic Monkeys
Michael Franti & Spearhead
!!! (fuck knows how you actually say this)
That's enough to get me thinking about going. Fuck PJ and DMB, that just gives me an opportunity to get a jump on the lines for the buses, back into town and up to the bar before the masses.
-
The acts that I'd pay to see on this lineup would probably sound terrible in a festival setting.
Bon Iver
Andrew Bird
DeVotchka
MMW
I'll pass this year.
-
!!! (fuck knows how you actually say this)
Chick chick chick. The guy that books this thing does not know who Paul Westerberg is. I am not making that up. That in and of itself is enough to encourage me to boycott until further notice.

Who's the guy, and how is something like that even possible?

Chick chick chick.
...and now every time I read in the Gamezone, "Pence!!!" my inner voice is going to say, "PenceChickchickchick" through no fault of my own.

Finally, music we can agree on. Eek-a-Mouse is always entertaining.
-

No idea, that's why I mention it. A good friend of mine is good friends with Troy Campbell, who's way tied-in to the Austin scene. Troy road manages Roky Erickson, and Roky and Paul have the same manager. My buddy sat next to Roky at Troy's wedding and spoke with the manager fellow. The manager, by the way, played in the band the Red Rockers. Anyway, my buddy is a huge Westerberg fan and asked the manager why the hell Paul never plays at ACL. The guy said, You know, I talked to them about it and they literally had no idea who Paul is.
So there you go. How is that possible? Again, I do not know.
-
The Dead Weather would be fun (it's Jack White's new project, featuring the lead singer from the Kills), but I'll just cross my fingers and hope that they play Houston some time around ACL.
-
I must be the only guy in the world who thinks Pearl Jam is the most ridiculously overrated band since Nirvana.
Granted, I'm a huge fan of the band, but I don't see how they could be considered overrated. A good chunk of people out there think they either a. quit putting out music out in the 90s or b. haven't put out anything worth listening to since Ten, and we all know a. is wrong and IMHO b. is totally wrong. They don't get undeserving rave reviews for their releases, and the media doesn't fawn all over them like they do bands like Coldplay and U2. Like I said, I'm obviously biased, but I'd say they're decidedly UNDERrated by the majority of music fans out there who haven't listened to their last few albums or watched/heard a live performance by the band.
Good enough lineup for me. I was hoping/praying for a PJ headlining spot and I got it. They haven't played Texas in many a year, so I'm glad to finally have this chance to see em. After that, I want to see Kings of Leon, Bon Iver, Blitzen Trapper, Arctic Monkeys, Toadies, The Dead Weather, Sonic Youth, Ghostland Observatory, and Raul Malo among others.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Paul Westerberg pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

I've faithfully bought each album as it came out. For me, Ten and Vs are fantastic and I could put them on loop for days on end. Vitalogy and Pearl Jam are very good. The rest I simply could not get very excited about. And then there's the politics...

I can't argue with you about that period between Vitalogy & Pearl Jam. The records in that time (No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act) were hit or miss, with seemingly a lot more miss than hit, although there are some songs on those 4 that I like a lot. It's just those records as a whole can't compare IMO with Ten, Pearl Jam, Vs. or Vitalogy.

I loved Ten. I think it was one of the first CDs that I owned. My younger brother got ahold of Ten and Vitalogy and transformed into the uber-fan, joining the fan club, buying every available recording, and now just generally obsessing over Eddie Vedder. I referred to my brother earlier on this site (fucking hippy); his viewpoints are siphoned directly from Eddie. I now equate me having any type of political discussion with him to having Noe debate the value of OPS with the commenters from Astros.com.

I'd send you a picture of Paul and me sitting together on his bus but god knows what sort of phototrickery you'd employ to create something deviant and disturbing.
-
I actually bought tickets for the first time this year. The headline acts don't do a lot for me (unless PJ wants to simply play Vs. start to finish), but this will give me a chance to see both The Decemberists and Avett Brothers, who I missed at SXSW, as well as Dr. Dog, whose last album was my favorite of '08.

What will Eddie and Rage Against the Machine rage about now?

Convicting Bush of war crimes. Yay!

Well, I'll admit that I had to look him up. The name wasn't familiar. I read through his Wikipedia article, and didn't recognize a single title, and none of the soundtracks he was on were movies I'd seen. I've heard of The Replacements, but again didn't recognize any of their stuff (on paper, at least). Sounds like the guy who booked this stuff just wasn't/isn't in the alternative scene 25 years ago or now.
-
I don't know, I really enjoy all the ballads and political rock Pearl Jam puts out now. It satisfies my inner-hippie peace, love, and condescension jones.

If the ACL Festival was held in 1987, The Replacements would be one of the headliners. How any person with even offhand knowledge of alternative music doesn't know who Paul Westerberg or The Replacements are is hard to believe. But that's just me.

In fairness, you're not responsible for booking something like ACL, so it's entirely excusable. To me, knowing who Paul Westerberg is would be a pretty baseline qualification for booking a gigantic festival like this, particularly one that tends to showcase washed up well-seasoned indie artists as headliners.
Speaking of influential voices in rock that every promoter should know, this reminds me extremely tangentially of Joe Strummer. There's a fantastic tribute song, "I'da Called You Woody, Joe" off the first album by The Gaslight Anthem, who are playing tonight in Austin. Should be awesome.
-

Who?
-
The promoters of ACL fest thought they were getting Paul McCartney to close out Sunday night. I guess that fell through. On the plus side the festival will be held later in the year than in the past, October 2 through 4. So it shouldn't be so unbearably hot. Also a new sprinkler system has been installed so the grass should be more hearty with less dust stirred up.
I'm going to be in San Francisco that weekend attending the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival among other things. It's an old school festival. It's FREE!!! It's in Golden Gate Park. And you can bring your own beer and food!!! They don't get as many name acts as ACL but they've always got a great line-up.

That sounds like a good time. They might not have headliners, but I would imagine the guys that sit in with the bands are pretty phenomenal, maybe Grisman, ex-NRPS guys--the sort of 'folkie' talent from the Bay Area. Make sure to report back!
-
Grizzly Bear
Bon Iver
Beasties
Sonic Youth
Lily Allen
Arctic Monkeys
The Dead Weather
School of Seven Bells
Decemberists
Robyn Hitchcock
B-52's
Walkmen
Raveonettes
Here We Go Magic
Dr. Dog
Like Limey said, DMB and PJ to make leaving a breeze.
New turf and irrigation system at Zilker AND they moved it to October!
Are you kidding?
Best Line-up EVER!

They will announce this years line-up June 1st. I've heard World Party will be there.

That was a helluva lineup! I think a trip to the Bay might be in order if this year's is anything like that. Lots of Texas music on last year's. Thanks for the heads up.

Wow. That's an amazing lineup for free. Did you go last year? Were the crowds massive or manageable? I'd love to see World Party.
-
If Levon Helm is in good voice, I'll go see his band. That's a good show.
I like Dan Auerbach solo all right, The Virgins, Cotton Jones, Dead Weather, and Eek-A-mouse. Wouldn't mind seeing Sonic Youth and the Beasties, or the B-52s. I think I am going to be up there anyway, so I'll probably go.
And, Poi Dog Pondering? Where is Timbuk3?

That is insane. I usually have little to no patience for outdoor music festivals but I will seriously consider going to this.
I'll need help, though, in locating the three essentials - sports sandals, patchouli and a dashiki.

I didn't go last year but I went in '06 and '07 and the lineups were comparable. The crowds have always been festival manageable--a little less dense than ACL but not much. I've always been amazed at the ease of milling about, and also have a secret close parking spot. I think they could have a better stage/sound setup and some huge video monitors like at ACL but it is free. Some rich Republican guy underwrites the whole thing as his gift to the city and they book a bunch of leftist protest types, so there's a certain irony given to their between song rants. It's an absolutely beautiful setting. Any serious music lover should consider it at least once, who knows how long the guy will keep it going.

Completely agree. I went to Hardly Strictly this past October, and it was a solid festival. Golden Gate Park is just a picturesque setting in which to see a show, especially the headliner acts that take the stage right around sunset. I was in SF for work and picked up a flyer somewhere and was kind of shocked to see Robert Earl Keen (who is apparently a regular of the festival) and Jerry Jeff on the bill. It is definitely one of the top music festivals in the country, for sure... IMO.
-
I fucking hate Robert Earl Keen. I may hate the stupid fuck more than I hate Pat Green, and that is really saying something.

Back in the early days of the intertoobs I wrote what at the time we called an "email message" to a "friend." An "email message" was a message delivered directly to another person's email box. Sort of like a response to a blog, but more direct. A "friend" was someone that you felt a kinship with that you would actually see face to face much of the time, rather interact with exclusively through Second Life. So I can understand how the concept might very well be obscure.
Ahh, the 90's. What an innocent time.
Anyway, I wrote something and included "IMHO." He asked what the hell that meant. I explained. He said, "You've never had a humble opinion about anything in your life."
Ahh, the 90's.

I got my ticket a couple days ago for the Sunday date. This'll be my first time to go. Do any of the experienced ACLFest goers on here have any advice/suggestions on what I should/shouldn't take or do?

There is a list of do's and do don'ts on the web site, but for starters, a comfortable pair of walking shoes, sunscrene, colapsable chair, earplugs and well thought out list of what you want to see. Oh yeah, Astros hat.

If your planning to spend the whole day there, take a camelbak, fill it about 1/2 full and freeze it. You can take ice in, but no water. There's a water fountain/hose you can use to fill it the rest of the way up once you get in.
-
I read on the FAQ that you can take in 2 sealed 1 liter bottles of water. Are prices there that overly outrageous to make it worth packing stuff like that in? I mean, I know the prices will be high, but are they that much higher than MMP prices, for example?
If I'm going to want a decent/good vantage point of the headliner, should I plan on camping out as close to that stage as possible all day?
-

I didn't go the last two years, but I seem to remember water being about $3/bottle, which isn't a big deal if it's 70 but is if it's 105.

Go light. If you take a collapsable chair, make sure it's crappy enough that you don't mind ditching it. You can't use chairs if you intend to be closer toward the stage, so think about that. A piece of fabric or an extra t-shirt or something is good for sitting on the ground between acts. I used to worry about the water thing, but not so much anymore. If you need a lot, bring the half iced camelback. Again, I wouldn't really gear up for it. The lighter the better.
-
If you've got an hour or 2 between shows you really want to see, head to the next stage early and get a spot in the shade under a tree.
-
Just two bits of FYI: they released the daily schedule today. Also, they announced that the Beastie Boys were pulling out due to Adam having lymph node cancer.

I wasn't bothered to see the Beasties. My concern now is that they give Lily Allen the Beasties' spot, opposite the Kings of Leon. That would suck.
-
Yeah, I wasn't going on Friday, and if I were, it'd be to see KoL, not BB. My concern, being that I'm going Sunday, is that they'd move someone like The Dead Weather to that spot.

I've experienced a similar feeling more than once at ACL. Everyone absolutely ga-ga over some collection of mopey voiced pseudo talents, leaving me no choice but to set out for the beer tent.
-
But how do you feel about Vin Scully?
I was in a band once that seemed to change it's name every few weeks, for a week or two we were know as Vince Cully, then The Goat Family, then The Cups, then Torry, Amos, and Andy, then Fart Dog Explosion, then Combo Gang Bunch, then The Band that Dare Not Speak It's Name, then The I Can't Believe It's Not Feces, then Half Doktors on the Claim Shell, then "Red" Snapper and the Catfish, then the Cold Fusion Tabernacle Choir, then Heavenly Fodder, then Tony Bent It, then Crazy 'Bout Herman, then The Speedy Crapper and Phillip Tubbs revue...etc.

This sums up my feeling about a lot of bands at ACL. It's ok because there are still plenty of bands I want to see. My Morning Jacket comes to mind. I heard all this hype about them and was completely underwhelmed by them 2 years ago.
-
I don't grok the whole KOL thing. They kind of annoy me.
Me, too. I don't understand why they're so popular. I mean, they're okay I guess in that cheesy arena rock kinda way, but I doubt they'll have any staying power in my music collection. see: Plan, the Dismemberment.
-
Cheesy arena rock? I don't think I've ever heard those 3 words used to describe KoL.
I like the band. I liked the last CD a lot, but I liked their older stuff even more. I guess if I was more of a snob about it I could be annoyed by the growing legions of teen girls that have suddenly discovered them, but I pay no mind to that.
-
Cheesy arena rock? I don't think I've ever heard those 3 words used to describe KoL.
Absofuckinglutely. Just listen to the opening lines of "Closer." The singer's vocal stylings are obviously cheesy, in a bad way. Like Creed.
OTOH, I will admit to mildly enjoying some of their songs, which is more than I can say for Creed.
-
I guess you and I have completely different ideas of "cheesy arena rock". There's a HUGE difference between KoL and a band like Creed.
You shouldn't judge them solely by their weakest record IMO.
-
Since mentioned before and in case anyone was wondering, the lineup for this year’s ninth annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (http://www.strictlybluegrass.com/), to be held Oct. 2-4 in Golden Gate Park, and as per usual, it’s a doozy. (As a 100% free event with no corporate sponsorship, it practically qualifies as a miracle.)
Booker T with the Drive-by Truckers, World Party, The Knitters, heh heh.

I'm not the world's biggest fan of music festivals but this looks awesome.
Would I need to buy and apply my own patchouli or should I expect a contact dose?
