When it comes to his longtime foil, Frazier is sympathetic to the suffering Parkinson's disease has caused Ali. But as a Christian, Frazier said, he isn't surprised by it, either.
"I'm sorry that he is the way he is, but I didn't have too much to do with it. It was the good man above,'' Frazier said. "Maybe I did have a little to do with it, but God judges, you know what I'm saying? We don't have the power to judge that the man has above.''
Frazier believes that Ali's arrogant boasts of "I am the greatest!'' were "a slap in the Lord's face,'' and that he did the same to his family when he changed his name from Cassius Clay to reflect his Muslim beliefs.
"I respect him as a guy who did a fine job in the fight game,'' Frazier said. "I don't think he really loves me. I didn't like nothing he done, you know?''

What the hell does a radio psychiatrist know about boxing?

If you haven't seen Thrilla in Manila, I highly recommend it. I love Ali but the effect his words had on Joe Frazier makes for a very compelling story, one that I hadn't heard before.

I watched it last night. I think Joe had decided before the fight that he would never forgive Ali for saying the things Ali said about Joe and his family.

I haven't seen it yet but I've got it on the DVR. I can understand Frazier's hard feelings, especially since Ali is pretty much a deity now. Frazier was a great, great heavyweight and insanely tough. It's amazing that he has what appears to be all of his faculties given that you couldn't sneak a punch past his face.
I read somewhere a while back that sometimes he would scribble over Ali's name when he was presented items to sign that already had Ali on them.

Never any love lost between those two. Interesting though, that Frazier's bitterness has festered as long as it has, considering his Christian beliefs. He may not believe he has the power to judge but he certainly is doing some judging.

For Ali's point, the personal attacks were never meant to be taken "personal," it was just gamesmanship on his part. He thinks Frazier should have seen passed it.

Ali just ran his mouth. I don't think that he ever meant any of it.

I'd say that a black man calling another black man an Uncle Tom at that time in history goes beyond shit-talkin.

Actually, you're wrong. It was very common back then. It would be much more offensive today.
