Title: Jerry Manuel on Carlos Lee
Post by: pravata on March 02, 2009, 01:01:56 pm
MLB.com: Have you been involved with a player who has evolved from what Jose Reyes was two, three years ago to what you think he can be this year?

Manuel: Yes. Carlos Lee [of the White Sox, now the Astros]. He was a free-swinging, undisciplined, good hitter. And now he is a disciplined, good hitter. We worked with him [in Chicago] just like we've been working with Jose. He became a more ... more responsible player.

FYI, that's Jerry Manuel of the Mets, not Charlie Manuel of the Phillies.

I guess Manuel taught him plate discipline in reference to hitting, but not plate discipline in reference to the buffet line.

Manuel failed to mention one big difference in that Reyes has an upper-cut swing where as Carlos has a level swing through the ball which gives him better drive on the ball

Good observation about the mechanics of the swing, however since Manuel talked about approach (and improvement therein), it was good to read.  Here is the thing, has anyone considered that since Lee made the jump from undisciplined free-swinger that perhaps it would be a good idea to have him talk to Pence about such a propensity?  I know that the Astros love the kid and his enthusiasm for the game, but when said enthusiasm translate over to "swing at anything, any time, any where in any situation", that takes Pence out of the running of being a good #3 or #4 hitter in his career.  In fact, methinks that somehow Pence will wind up hitting #2 for this season and we'll all be in for another mediocre output from the talented, yet undisciplined young man.

Noe, will anyone other than Lance and Carlos hit where they belong in the order?

Besides watching for the decision on the #5 spot in the rotation, the 25th man on the bench, who will be the starting catcher (*cough* Quintero *cough*) and if Edwin Maysonet survives the jinx I put on him... the big news that should come out of spring is what in the heck is the lineup card going to look like.

Cooper has some serious debating to do to make this lineup work somehow because it's really hard to say Houston has a mix in place for a solidly constructed lineup, and I mean that in an non-fantasy baseball way too.

Bennett said today in an Ortiz chat that Quintero is the starter and the rest are vying for backup.

It was not much of debate, but in the oft chance that there was talk about anything different, Quintero was the chalk pick.

I can't find the link now, but I read on chron.com a few days ago that Cooper was considering batting the pitcher 8th at times this year - said he thought about it last year.

Together with this gem....

"Wandy was pretty good," Cooper said. "He was up in the zone a little bit with his fastball. He had a problem locating his fastball. His curveball wasn't crisp, but he threw OK.

....I think Coop is already in midseason form.

I know I don't post here very often....sorry I don't have poll to help make friends.

Dear Coop,

Dice should never be involved in the creation of the batting line-up.

Very truly yours,

Limey

"At least, not yet. But Cooper, at the very minimum, has let the thought cross his mind. Just a little."

I think Coop is a lurker and he knows how batting a pitcher 8th would make us feel.

Coop is an idiot. I was rooting for him so much.

Jerry Manuel (to bring this thread back around) has been very liberal with his lineup so far in spring, batting his pitchers in recent games second or sixth, depending on how many innings he expects them to throw.

I haven't the foggiest idea why he's so desperate to get his pitchers extra at-bats at the expense of his batters getting those ST at-bats, but I half expect Wright to pitch an inning after the WBC wraps up, "just in case."

Well, I'm still rooting for him, they can't all be geniuses.
