Who will play SS on Tejadas days off?
Gottfried: A combination of Blum and whoever makes the club as our utility infielder.
Who are the candidates for utility infielder?
Gottfried: Tommy Manzella, Edwin Maysonet, Jason Smith, David Newhan, Matt Kata, Drew Sutton. The first three guys can play a real solid SS if needed. The others are primarily 2B, OF, and corner infielders.

Watch me jinx one of them: "I bet Edwin Maysonet comes out of spring really pushing for a position on the 25 man roster. In fact, he'll probably be pushing for a starting job, with Tejada moving over to third" - me. Okay, now expect Maysonet to break an arm the first day of camp.

i'll balance it out: "Maysonet sucks." this means he'll make the HOF after only one season.

You know what? From what I've seen of him in ST these last several years I was thinking the exact same thing reading this, that Maysonet has a real chance to make the team. He plays great defense and is faster than a wet pig and from what I've seen has some sense about himself when running the bases. What's more, the coaches seem to really like him.
I didn't get as far as Tejada to third in my musings, but they were indeed brief.
-
Faster than a wet pig? WTF?
-
Maysonet is faster than a wet pig
He'll make the big leagues for sure with that scouting report.

I think his assessment provided more psychological insight than he ever intended.
BTW, I think the metaphor he mixed was "greased pig," but that has more to do with the ability to be elusive than outright speed.

Mixed metaphors can be fun. Like the time my girlfriend told me at the dinner table in front of her parents: "It's time you put out or shut up."

Maysonet's problem as far as trying to make the bigs as a regular has always been his inability to hit consistently. But as the 25th player, late inning defensive replacement, pinch runner, very occasional spot starter, that role suits him very well.
-
I remember sitting talking to a pitcher in Salem one day and he said he loved playing with Maysonet behind him. He may be a solid late inning replacement. He has all of his options and a lower ceiling than Manzella. They will want Manzella playing everyday so he won't be the 25th man.

Maysonet has also logged significant time at both middle infield positions (playing them both well) and spent some time in the OF. Manzella is a SS only (at least for now).

That's not reallly mixing metaphors, just confusion. Examples of mixed metaphors:
1. "a rolling stone is worth two in the bush"
2. "biting the hand that rocks the cradle"
3. "that's the way the cookie bounces"
4. "haven't we beat that horse with an ugly stick"
V. "came out smelling like a bandit"
6. "as much fun as shooting monkeys in a barrel".
-

Shouldn't that be:
6. "as much fun as shooting chimps opening your cruiser door"?

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. An extra ration of rum for you, my good man.

I was once thinking about participating in a real estate deal in the mountains of far western North Carolina. The agent's name was Gribble, which I loved. On the way to the property you'd pass all these ramshackle houses and trailers all with scores and scores of plastic milk containers strewn about the yard. I thought, Damn, these people are serious about their calcium intake. Turns out the jugs are somehow useful in the making of methamphetamines. Anyway, one day I optimistically referred to the houses as "local color." Gribble looked at me quizzically for a moment and said, Aint no color there - them's all white folks.
Another time he referred to the seller of some item or another as "higher'n balls on a giraffe." That saying makes sense, of course, but since that time I've enjoyed making up similar sorts of comparisons that do not make any sense.
I realize that my explanation must take most of the romance out of the wet pig, and for that I apologize.
Other mis-sayings that I enjoy:
Six of one, half a dozen or the other.
A horse of a different feather.

How much weight would you guys give to the fact that Maysonet has had a jersey number listed for a while.

Obviously not a lot but I would say he is the favorite from the start.

Using that logic, he has a better chance of making the roster than Mike Hampton who doesn't even have a # listed.

Using that logic, he has a better chance of making the roster than Mike Hampton who doesn't even have a # listed.
Logic? All it means is that he actually got to wear his jersey for a couple of games during his September call-up last year. It's not like they have a shortage of jerseys or anything such that they have to be careful not to assign them to anyone without a chance to make the team. And with substantially fewer than 99 players in camp, I doubt they are short of numbers, either.
-
I'll be curious to see if Maysonet has his name on the back of his jersey this spring. The last several years he was nameless.

Our HR director just used "sweating cats and dogs" and "sreaming bloody Mary". in her presentation.
I'm not even kidding.

Huh?

In context, I think she was reaching for "screaming bloody murder."
I can't say for sure, though.

It was the "sreaming" that confused me. But since I have been reading quite a bit of Tudor history recently, I missed the "Bloody Mary"/"bloody murder" snafu altogether.

Ralph Kiner gave us these gems:
"If Branch Rickey was alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave."
"All of the Mets' road wins against the Dodgers this year have been at Dodger Stadium"
"All of his saves have come in relief appearances."

From the idiot savant broadcaster Mike Shannon:
“He ran to second faster than a cat in Chinatown.”
“Our next home stand follows this road trip.”
Joe: “Mike, the Cardinals would like to welcome a group of 19 French foreign exchange students in section 382 today.” Mike: “Where they from Joe?” Joe: “Uhhh… France… I think.”
“Oooh, that last pitch inside was a bit questionable and he’d like to say something to the umpire, but he won’t say anything. At least not verbally.”
“The wind has switched 360 degrees”.
“The Dodgers are ahead by 5 runs or 3 runs or in between there somewhere.”
“Horner’s arguing, he wants an interference call against Cangeloni. Now Cangeloni’s got something to say, but here comes Whitey to give a taste of his vocabulary, and it’ll have extra mustard on it.”
(About what elevated Whitey Herzog as a manager) ”The key thing is, he has that photogenic mind.”
