Title: Adam Dunn?
Post by: Travis on February 08, 2009, 09:41:21 am
Any truth to this?  http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-08-rogers-whispersfeb08,0,6701151.story

A "sneak attack" on the Cubs for Adam Dunn?  And Bourn to the bench?  Thoughts?

Why "Bourn to the bench?"

Lee, Pence, Dunn?

Trade Pence

Lee, Bourn, Dunn

We need pitching more than we need another bat.  I just hope Bourn gets a fair shake to start the year.  From there, let the cards fall as they may.

Well, lets make is more unsubstantiated...Pence for Peavy.

Lee, Pence and Dunn?! Now that is a comical outfield! I would pay good money to see that! It would be like watching 3 dudes in roller skates, trying to shag fly balls!

Horseshit. This contract would probably be worth what, $6-8 million? Has there been any indication that the Astros are willing to spend that kind of money this offseason? They just watched Wolf, their primary target, sign with the Dodgers for less than that. Suddenly they're willing to pull this move out of their ass. Horseshit.

Chicago writer with lines to fill.

There is much speculation that many unsigned players will sign one year deals for ridiculous discounts to avoid signing a longer term "bad deal" in this economy, hoping to cash in whenever the economy rebounds.

Mark me down as a guy that's a little worried about Peavy's health.  Oh sure...I'd gleam like the rest if we landed'm...but if he was to breakdown this year with that contract...this club would be up a creek without a paddle for some time.

thanks for filling me in Mr. Rogers

Indeed, but it's likely that there are other teams willing to spend more on such a deal. Pat Burrell still pulled in $8 million a year, and Dunn will probably get about the same amount. It seems his discount would have to be very, very steep for the Astros to get involved considering their attitude toward spending this offseason.

Rogers misunderstood - the Astros are planning a sneak attack on the Cubs with an Atom Gun. The development model (http://www.toytent.com/RayGuns/pics/2339-2.jpg) shows some early promise, but the final product should be a real sonofabitch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_Fc9ubaGAE).

It would be the most outfield fun since "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry patrolled CF for the "Metropolitans".

"We have MVP-caliber players in left field and at first base, and we think Michael Bourn deserves the opportunity to play on an everyday basis [in center field]." - Ed Wade

So, does this mean that Cecil Cooper is finally going to get it and be on-board with the wishes of his boss?  I hope so.

Wade said nothing of actually leading off.

True, so they should settle on a spot for him in the lineup and then forgetaboutit.  Bat him 8th for all I care, if that is where Cooper wants to relegate the young man.  But bouncing him around is no way to treat a young player.  Also benching him the first sign that the media is whining about the young kid is no way to manage either.

I've never seen him play the position, but I can only imagine how comically bad Lee's range at third would be. There's a reason he was moved off the hot corner in the first place.

If he hasn't, then why the heck are we keeping him on the roster? I say cut him. Or trade him for A-Rod.

I could certainly be wrong but I think he means third in the line-up, not third base. Not that that makes a tremendous amount of sense, either.

It's kind of you to give him with the benifit of the doubt, but, unfortunately, I fear you are wrong and indeed he is that dumb.

In what universe is Carlos Lee an MVP caliber player?

That being said, I agree we have no place for Dunn.

Since MVP is largely a function of offense, I'd say Lee was playing as well as anyone in the league last year before he was hurt.

Of course, so was Berkman in April and May...

Even ignoring his below average defense and him playing a non-premium position, he does not get on base enough or run the bases well enough to merit discussion as an MVP caliber offensive force.

Neither does Ryan Howard, yet he came within a hair last year of winning the MVP.

When was the last time the MVP voters gave a damn about getting on base?
