Title: Herb Score passes
Post by: juliogotay on November 11, 2008, 01:21:40 pm
I was not old enough to see Score pitch but some have said the southpaw would have been better than Koufax. For those that don't know, Score was struck by a line drive in the face early in his career and never was the same again. He was a long-time Indians radio broadcaster retiring in 19997. He was 75.

Don't think anybody threw harder in that era.
He certainly had control problems, as did Koufax early on.

Another pretty fair left hander died yesterday too - Preacher Roe

it was not just the FB. he had a fantastic CB too, like Koufax.

I enjoyed listening to him on the radio while I lived in Cleveland. No nonsense. Great sense of team history in a town that was only beginning to have something to celebrate.

Oh, and occassional score updates as well.

Here's a  nice article (http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2008/11/former_indians_broadcaster_her.html) about him.

On broadcasting:  "For me, broadcasting the game is like sitting in the stands talking to the fellow sitting next to me," he said.

I grew up listening to him broadcasting the terrible Indians teams of the 70s and 80s.  Hearing his voice still takes me back.

RIP, Herb.

What are you doing now? Do you see why so many people put you on ignore? I don't put anyone on ignore, so I have to suffer through inane posts like this.

Personally I think the occasional quote from loe is good. It reminds everyone that is ignoring him why they are.

I don't need a reminder.

I don't need a reminder.

So you think.

Then one day you're sitting there minding your own business, and think to yourself, "You know, maybe that loe guy is allright." With my patented system, you don't have to un-block him to realize that you're wrong!

Score was the young phenom.  No one will ever know if he would have been as good as Koufax, but he may have been better.  Damned shame.

Somewhere yesterday I read a quote from Rocky Colavito who faced them both. He said basically that Score was every bit as talented if not more so.
