I believe there is some box you can check that will turn off the same feature. I'm pretty sure Jim knows it.
ETA: Additional Options, turn off smileys.

You will still get the damn smiley. However, when you post--see that Additional Options thingy to your left? Click on it, then check--Don't use smileys. Works every time.
