Title: Garrido (non-Astros)
Post by: Taras Bulba on June 16, 2008, 09:33:10 am
Anyone see the ESPN thing last night on Augie?  Pretty interesting to get a peek behind the scenes at the guy and there was nothing shown to dispel the notion that he is not your standard issue coach.  Not perfect but UT could do a whole lot worse.  He understands the difference between professional and college ball and likes where he is because of the coaching aspect (Read: pro players don't listen for shit).  He can also chew some pretty good ass.

Enjoyed it.  The melt down at the end was fun viewing.  Also liked the "fear is the demon, confidence the hero" analogy.

i did not see the show, but Mark and i sat in the second row almost directly behind him for all but one of the games at the Dell Diamond regional two years ago. the man peppered his hitters with constant "advice" on literally every pitch. i thought he was insane. the image of Zen Master Augie could not have been further from the way he was during those games. we also heard one ass-chewing that featured an f-bomb or two. perhaps Mark will add to this from his perspective, but i imagine his players must try to tune a lot of that stuff out.

He was dropping f-bombs last night in the ESPN video.  Basically, he used reverse psychology on the players, using the proverbial "I'm sorry, I let you down, I should be ashamed of myself.  The game is simple, catch the ball, throw the ball, get the key hits when you need them, and I didn't help you guys do that.  I am sorry".  Place all the f-bombs you want in there because that is what Augie did.

Yeah buddy, that was pretty ridiculous.

Augie was spewing more cliches than a room full of Biggio. Augie would be on perma-mute if I played on one of his teams and thats the way he is all the time.

He certainly fancies himself the zen master, and he's as full of shit as anyone.  But it's hard to argue with his success.  He's done something right.

He has done a lot right. Winning championships is the bottom line.
