There are certain players in Major League Baseball that make it hard to say you have to be a fine athlete to be a baseball player. Prince Fielder is one of those guys.
-
Mystery solved. Bill Brown talked to Mike Maddux before the game about the pat down he does on the pitcher when he visits the mound. Maddux says he puts his hand on the pitcher's collarbone and tries to feel for his pulse with his thumb to gauge the heart rate. He's not just handsy, he has a purpose.
-
Am I the only one who really, really loathes Braun? Not necessarily because he is good, which he is, but moreso because he looks (and acts?) like such a goddamn twat. I don't know if any other player has ever climbed my most hated ladder so fast.
-

So we've got Fielder and Braun, anyone else want to add to this list of disliked players?
-
Fielder is just Fielder, he doesn't bother me the same way for some reason.
-
Did you guys hear the comment from Brownie that supposedly Yost puts his hand on the pitcher's collar bone to get the heart rate of his pitcher while he visits the mound?
Is this guy serious? Is he really making decisions based on this? If its too high does he start massaging the shoulder to loosen him up?
I don't know, just seemed ridiculous, but Yost has been known to bat his pitcher 8th, so I guess I shouldn't rule anything out.

are we only talking about Brewers? Braun is on my list b/c he seems to have an attitude, but my all time most hated players are Edmonds & Pujols. Also never liked Eric Davis.
-
I don't dislike Braun. I think it's a Jew baseball player (Koufax, Greenberg) thing but I'm not Jewish. I can't stand Fielder or Hart.

Look up a couple posts. That's Mike Maddux. And if you've followed Maddux you'll know he does this almost every time he visits the mound.

Fielder. That's a...Jewish name, right?
-
What's in a name?
-
It smells just as sweet.

It was the pitching coach, Mike Maddux, not Ned Yost, the mgr. Seemed reasonable to me. Not a deciding factor, but one of many.
-
What's in a name?
you say tohmahto, I say radial arm saw.
-

No, Braun's quickly become perhaps my most hated in the league. I used to cut Pujols some slack in the past because of his immense talent, but after the bush shit he's pulled this season he's right up there too. Edmonds too.
-

Even if it's a crazy idea, it explains why he does it. Otherwise, it's just creepy.
-
I hate Y. Molina, and Pooholes, I'm learning to hate Braun but damn, I respect their talent.
-

I don't know, I'm not ready to abandon creepy just yet.
-
I'm really enjoying Roy's pitching tonight. He's going right at 'em with good stuff.

So...he's Vulcan? That works for me.
-

Right, jury is still out on the creepy.
-
They could linger a little longer on those talent shots in the bumper. Wow. Nice night to be at the park.
-
So...he's Vulcan? That works for me.
Other options were groper or pick pocket.
-
Didn't the Eagles do a song called Victor McClung? I hope they were wrong.
-
Attaboy Roy.
-
who is the third voice in the booth?
-
How can Fielder be so fat and have such quick hands? He looks like a barrel on stilts.
-
Sawed off stilts maybe.
-
How can Fielder be so fat and have such quick hands?
Genetics
-
If you could Frankenstein together Maddux's touch with Fielder's hand speed...
-
Middle of the 6th Astros 2 Brewers 1, Lance hit a two run homer, Braun hit a solo shot.
-
Brownie is talking about what great switch hitters Berkman and Larry Jones are, I'd like to mention that asshook Milton Bradley is pretty good too.
-
End of 6. Still 2 to 1.
-
Not that it'd mattered tonight so far, but I'd still prefer to see Spaz hitting 6th than 1st.
-
Other options were groper or pick pocket.
Or game show host.
-

pretty good, yes, but not in the same class as Berkman or Chipper
-
Roy with 9 Ks, fuck the contact.
-
Or game show host.
Perfect, Family Feud.
-
Has no one learned anything from the past 2 weeks? STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW GOOD ROY IS DOING! That includes you JD and Brownie. There is LOTS of fucking game left and it's only 2-1.
Hall with the double as I click submit.
-
Man, Bill Hall has a Derek Bell/Moises Alou-size snuff in that lip of his. He may even have one of them in there with it.
Solid.
-
Roy due up 3rd, bottom 7th, up 2-1. Coop, what's the call?
-
Roy due up 3rd, bottom 7th, up 2-1. Coop, what's the call?
99 pitches, he goes out for the 8th, unless someone gets on.
-
Warning, if you've got HD, switch over to the low-def broadcast now!
-
Gollum in to pitch.
-
Bourn is batting for Roy in the bottom of the 7th against the alien's bastard son.
-
Gollum in to pitch.
Wow, that's just perfect.
-
Fuck me, I love Gollum. 2 fuckups in the field after 2 batters. Someone better go pad the walls in the Milwaukee dugout.
-
Man, that guy sucks. What the fuck were the Brewers thinking.
-
Brownie making veiled insinuations about Gollum's mental state.
-
Hide the phones.
-
Something about this stadium must really get to him. Perhaps there is a gold ring buried under the mound.
-
Nice job of hitting by Erstad, single up the middle to score Bourn.
-
Erstadt gives him strike two, the singles up the middle to drive in Bourn. 3-1.
-
PENCE! watches strike three. One down 3-1 'stros.
-
C'mon Miggy!
-
Matsui is from Japan, and he singles to left to load the bases.
-
PENCE! watches strike three. One down 3-1 'stros.
The Tiant windup flummoxed him.
-
The Tiant windup flummoxed him.
Except when gollum does it, it's called the Taint.
-
Tejada leads in all-star voting at shortstop, and he pops up to Fileder near the 1st base dugout.
-
i was really hoping for an inside the park grand slam there, but i'll take that
-
Preeeeeeeecious.
-
Puma was not fazed by the Taint. This has been a pleasure to watch.
-
What has he got in his nasty little pocketses?
-
Holy shit Mike Cameron. Better bury your head in that Tal's Hill dirt.
-
Be-you-tiff-full. Berkman hits a rope triple over Cameron's head.
-
Nothing like throwing a 2 strike cock shot to the NL's best hitter, because you wanted to fancy things up a bit.
-
i was really hoping for an inside the park grand slam there, but i'll take that
Was thinking that as well.
-
How fast you reckon that ball was going off Berkman's bat?
-
Will there always be a home for Julian Tavares?
-
Topspin lob.
-
Except when gollum does it, it's called the Taint.
I don't care who you are, that there is funny!
-
i was really hoping for an inside the park grand slam there, but i'll take that
I was thinking it might happen, too, but I suppose that the very reason it was a hit was the same reason that it couldn't go for four bases.
-
How fast you reckon that ball was going off Berkman's bat?
Mike Bourn fast or faster.
-
Mike Mach Bourn fast or faster.
FIFY.
-
There's fast, faster, Mike Bourn and Mach Bourn.
-
How fast you reckon that ball was going off Berkman's bat?
Can't help you on that hit, but have you seen this: http://www.hittrackeronline.com/
Pretty good tool on tracking homeruns, including speed off the bat. Berkman's bomb the other day had the second longest "true" distance of the year. True meaning adjusted to a neutral setting.
-
Brocail? Crap, Cooper has no mercy. Brocail almost ate the Cardinals in his last appearance.
-
Brocail? Crap, Cooper has no mercy. Brocail almost ate the Cardinals in his last appearance.
Needs of the business.
-
Braun is no E. T. McGee but he has some monster googly eyes.
-
Brocail? Crap, Cooper has no mercy. Brocail almost ate the Cardinals in his last appearance.
Almost is a good thing. The only reason he'd want to eat 'em is so he could shit 'em later.
-
Needs of the business.
He's been an animal lately.

Cool site, thanks. Check out the scatter chart (http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2008_1502&type=hitter) for Berkman's home runs this year.
-

That is cool. I wish they'd use that method as the official distance.
-
He's been an animal lately.
Yeah, but he's the kind of animal that could make me a PETA rethink it's agenda.
-
Brownie: "Only the Phillies have used fewer batting orders than the Astros."
That is a surprise to me.
-
So...he's Vulcan? That works for me.
Well done, automatic nickname right there. The pitchers at Round Rock would get creeped out by Maddux doing this, many of them started to complain. He couldn't keep his hands to himself and none of them appreciated the extra touches Mike would add to his duties.
-
Yeah, but he's the kind of animal that could make me a PETA rethink it's agenda.
Or at least enforce the leash laws.
-
Fielder could easily house three or four refugee families in his pants.
-
Ok now you can discuss how money Roy was tonight.
Goodnight all, fun game!
-
nice win for the astros and roy!
-
Nice win for the Astros tonight. good for Roy.
-
Oh that feels so right. Thank you Roy & Lance, I was a bit parched for quality baseball these last few weeks.
-
Sure am enjoying watching The Kid pitch this year. Nice to see a W from the Good Guys!
-
Brownie: "Only the Phillies have used fewer batting orders than the Astros."
That is a surprise to me.
Not to me. Coop was absolutely Dierkerish in his lineups, it was hard for the reserves to get the PT (and Cheito could never get going with that sort of playing time). BTW - the team had a closed door meeting today with Ed Wade and Cecil Cooper. It was announced to them that certain players will get more PT, like Geoff Blum. I think Blum and Wiggington officially became a platoon (see: Garner/Walling or Berry/Spiers). Wiggington will provide the right handed power bat off the bench that the team needs and of course Blum is a much better defender on the field.
That really leaves a hole at the six hole though while Pence is playing the role of leadoff, but I'm pretty sure Bourn will be back at leadoff within a week or two here. Maybe sooner.
-

looking forward to seeing that

I agree with Bourn returning to the leadoff slot, he's the best long term option, but he needs to do better than what he did before.
-
Team meeting, "OK, Puma, homer and a bases loaded triple, ready... break!"
-
looking forward to seeing that
Footer's on it (http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080610&content_id=2883478&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou), but reports that the platoon is a surprise to Wiggington. Interesting.
Ty Wigginton made a costly error during that game, bobbling a double-play ball that opened the doors to a five-run Cardinals seventh. That defensive miscue may or may not be the reason why he was not in the lineup on Tuesday. Cooper shot down that theory, saying simply that he met with several players while the team was in Pittsburgh last week to tell them he may start some of the bench players more.
On Tuesday, Geoff Blum was inserted in at third base.
"Don't be surprised if you see a lot more of that," Cooper said.
Will third base turn into a platoon situation?
"I'm not going to say that," Cooper said. "You're not going to get me to commit to that. But I will say, [Blum is] going to play.
"My veteran guys on the bench, for a while, we were going through a period where they didn't play that much," the manager continued. "I just think they need to play. When they swing the bat well, they deserve a chance to play. That's what we're going to do."
Asked for his take on the situation, Wigginton said he knew nothing of Cooper's decision.
"I don't know anything about it," Wigginton said. "As far as I know, I'm playing every day and that's it. I was kind of surprised I wasn't in there today, with the off-day yesterday. I felt like I swung the bat well lately and played good [defense]."
Footer also said Ed Wade conducted the meeting, not Cooper. Odd goings on. If Cooper is going to platoon Wiggington, he should come out and say so.
-
Tonight I was listening to the game on the radio (while watching my son play), and heard Milo announce a Happy 1st Wedding Anniversary to David Puddy and Elaine Benes Puddy. Apparently no one is previewing the guest list anymore.

yeah, sure, Mike. he started that touching stuff in RR, and it was hilarious to watch. he had a set routine on each visit that never changed. we started calling his next touch during the visits. if he tried that with Brocail, he'd be known subsequently as One Arm Maddux.

Or at very least, Buster Bluth (http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjA2MjcwODgwMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwODMwOTI3._V1._CR0,0,485,485_SS100_.jpg). "Heyyy, brother."
