Title: 2008 Draftees and Status

This information has been compiled from lists at MLB.com (http://houston.astros.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2008/drafttracker.jsp?p=0&s=30&sc=pick_number&so=ascending&st=number&ft=TM&fv=hou) and Baseball America (http://www.baseballamerica.com/draftdb/2008xteam.php?team=1009).  Where there are discrepancies between the lists, I've gone with the one from MLB.com. I'll try to keep this updated every couple of days.  Please let me know if anything is incorrect, I've missed a nickname, etc.

This will not be useful unless you can fix the horizontal alignment.  Word wrap is killing you by adding space in only one column at a time.

Not sure what you mean.  Checked it on two computers and it comes out in proper column/row format.  Anyone else having a problem with it?

Looks pretty normal to me....the 'Signed' column needs to be moved up one space though and possibly the 'Date of Birth'

You tipped me off to the problem.  If youmake the page wide enough, everything lines up (including the "signed" column).  Make it narrower, and line wrap kills you.

Your table is a little hard to read.  Are you using a widescreen monitor?  Because on a laptop or regular monitor, the table is squished and off.

Noe, check your PM. 

Additionally, I emailed my spreadsheet (in Word format) to Duman and Jacksonian, so perhaps they can post it in a more user-friendly format.

Here is what I see (http://www.spikesnstars.com/graphics/table.jpg).

The word wrap is off, notice the names like "Davidson, Charles" going to two lines.  That drops the next column of information into the wrong setup diagonally.  However, that may be a Firefox browser format problem or the fact that I use "normal" as my text view for Firefox browsers (and should use deceased or something else).  So no worries, just saying it's not working for me.

ET: I decreased my text view to very small and the alignment is perfect now.  But I need bifocals to read it.  Bummer.

I have a widescreen monitor at work and it is set to 1280 x 960.  It looks perfect when I maximize the browser.  Well done OSF.

Maybe he should try RHP.  His ERA at A&M this spring was over 8.

Depends on the draft, if you draft alot of 4yr SRs, then it is low, if you draft mostly HS players it can be considered high...  It is about what you would expect at this point, I think.

There is still 2 SRs left to sign, and then the intertesting part starts, how many of those that can play somewhere else choose to take the money offered and play in the minors.

You typically want to look at what is your % for non-4yr SRs and top 15 round picks.  The more you sign of each, typically the better.

I don't think DQ is going to be used at all with anyone.  Last year, they used Nolan with at least one of the lower drafted kids who signed (Pitkin).  That is not an option this year.  I would wonder about Bags or Biggio being used.

However, with Seaton, it will come down to the $$$.  I hear Green is his favorite color.  It will either be green cash & Greeneville or he will pitch for the Green Wave of Tulane.  Just pure speculation, I would put his chances of being signed at 60%.  He has stated he is an Astro fan, that might carry some weight with him.

DQ is too radioactive. I don't think they'll come anywhere near him. I agree with Duman that Bags and/or Biggio might be brought to bear on the young man, though.

Patton was reported prior to the draft of being solid to Texas and wanting 1st round money.  He signed for late 2nd round money and stated he wasn't that solid to Texas and didn't know where that was coming from.  Alot of this is a game played by advisers & parents to position their player in the best possible spot. The Patton's had their figure going into negotiation and they were able to get close to it. 

I am sure the Seaton kid and his adviser have let the Astros know what they are looking for.  The Astros seem optimistic about getting him signed.  It would be a coup if the do.

Was this guy really thought of a strong-lean-to-college like Patton.  I don't read all the reports, but I never got the impression that he was a sure first round talent who was avoided due to signability.  I just assumed he was a guy that the experts had slightly higher than the clubs drafting.

Kody Hinze is on the Greeneville Roster.  He wasn't drafted but was signed as a NDFA out of Angelina JC.  He played for Angelina in 06 & 07 but I can't find where he played in 08.  He is a 1b who was drafted in the 05 draft by the Pirates as a DFE.  He didn't sign and hasn't been drafted since. 

In 07, he set Angelina records in batting average (.458), HR (15) and had the second most RBI (61).  He is their career leader in HR (27) and RBI (98). 

He prepped at Nimintz HS in Houstonl

Astros Gamenotes (http://presspass.mlb.com/dbdocs/77/115/2300_1775.pdf) announced the signing of Steele and Gaston today, noting that "Houston has now signed 24 of the 52 players from their 2008 First-Year Player Draft class."  This is a bit different from information in the Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5834767.html) which noted that Shuck and Pettus had also signed (which would make 26).  The other 'discrepancy' from Draftees and Status list is the inclusion of Grimmett (due to his inclusion on the Greenville Astros roster).  Will keep checking...

Also I recall thinking Seaton was a long shot to sign when they drafted him, yet I recall hearing lots of favorable (nothing certain) comments about the Astros chances of signing him.  As a result there was some debate around here about that too.

I'm down on Seaton signing at the moment.  It feels like a flier pick to me.  I'm fairly certain they drafted Davidson in the 3rd in part because they thought they could get him to sign for money in that area.  I actually thought that Dy... and Seaton would be the hold outs.  Time will tell, but that they've gotten 4 of the 6 high schoolers from the top 10 is terrific.

Perhaps in reference to the fact it will cost above slot to get Seaton out of his Tulane commitment, and those deals are generally not announced until the end of the signing period so as not to disrupt the rest of the slotting...

With Dydalewicz signing earlier this week (thanks for the heads-up Einertson), the Astros now have 28 of the 52 draftees signed.  The Astros have now signed 9 of their 12 picks from the first 10 rounds and 16 of their 22 picks from the first 20 rounds.  The 3 unsigned picks from the top 10 rounds are: Castro-1 (still in the CWS and cannot sign yet), Davidson-3 and Seaton-3S.

As a compensation pick for not signing a player last year, if the Astros do not sign Seaton they will not receive draft compensation for him next year.  They had every incentive to draft a player there that would sign.

I noticed last week that few of the top guys have signed.  Is this likely keeping the Astros from signing Castro, and is Castro's signing a necessary precursor to some of the other picks, such as Davidson, Seaton, and Dydaleiwicz?  Everything seems to have come to a standstill.

With the signing of Castro, the Astros now have signed 28 of their 52 draft picks.  All but 5 of the top 20 picks have been signed, and the it is generally expected (per Pinwheel and McTaggart) that Davidson (rd 3), Seaton (rd 3s) and potentially Dydalewicz (rd 8) will be signed as well. 

Additionally, ran across a site called PGCrosschecker.com which includes signing status and bonus for the top 10 rounds.  LINK (http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/draft/2008/bonuses/signing_bonuses_08.aspx).  Hasn't been updated to include Castro yet, but does show the following Astros:

Lyles (rd 1s) - $930,000;  Austin (rd 2) - $715,000;  Steele (rd 4) - $267,000;  Duncan (rd 5) - $185,000; 
Shuck (rd 6) - $150,000;  Gaston (rd 7) - $150,000; Cruz (rd 9) - $150,000;  Holloway (rd 10) - $150,000.

If correct, the Astros paid significantly more than most of the other teams from rounds 7 - 10, and Castro is only the 3rd pick in the top 10 to sign to date [Beckham - $6,150,000 (Rays - 1st overall); Skipworth - $2,300,000 (Marlins, 5th overall).

Alleva.  Meszaros was signed Friday after 19.2 innings in the Cape League with a 1.37 ERA and 25 strike outs.  "It's an underdog story: 22 yr old Jr., below average stats in spring of draft year, shoulder surgery, and 5'10", 175 lbs. As I type, he is driving to Troy, NY to meet his new teammates later today in Tri-City.''

As I wrote in the draft review he had some impressive work, statistically speaking prior to the injury.  His recovery looks fairly complete.

Nada, that I've heard.

If they do sign at this late date, I would expect the deal to be post dated for 2009.  Doing that starts their clock toward 40-man decision time back a year.  There really isn't much time left for anyone to join a club and get any real work in anyway.

Why does JdJO think it's imminent that Sheets signs with Houston? Or is this just wishful thinking. If I'm going to think wishfully I would put Sabathia in an Astros uniform before Sheets although Sheets would be a good signing I suppose. He is often injured.

Does he think he's reporting some sort of well kept secret or breaking news?  Anybody with any sort of knowledge of the situation knew for a fact it was going to take "above slot money" to get the kid signed.  Heck, that's why he went in the third round and not the first or supplemental round!

It's been a while since I've been out of college, but $60k/year for school?  Really?  Harvard only runs about $30k/year I think.

Your tuition-meter needs recalibration. Many private liberal arts schools are now in the $40K/year range. Harvard is $50K+.

Tulane is ridiculous. I was accepted there earlier this year and (without going into numbers) the scholarship they gave me was substantially larger than any other offer I got. Even so, it was way more expensive than anywhere else.

In short, I look forward to catching a few Express games during my first couple of weeks at Southwestern.

Dykstra had a hip injury in high school.  He had surgery to fix it, but the padres discovered he has some sort of degenerative hip condition when their doctors were examining him.  It's also possible that they are exaggerating things as a negotiating tactic.

ESPN is reporting that 9th overall pick (Nationals) Crow has signed with Forth Worth Cats of the American Association (LINK) (http://sports.espn.go.com/minorlbb/news/story?id=3535228).

From the story, it appears that the contract will not preclude him from signing with the Nationals if a deal can be reached before the Friday midnight deadline though.

He goes back in the draft ala Luke Hochevar a couple of years back.  Scherzer did this same thing too (sign with indy league team).

The Astros signed 32 of their 52 picks from the 2008 draft as of the close of the signing period (Friday, August 15 at midnight).  This includes 11 of their 12 picks from the first 10 rounds, and 19 of their 22 picks from the first 20 rounds.  Only Chase Davidson (round 3), Josh Poytress (round 16) and Shae Robin (round 20) were not signed from the first 20 rounds.

And, as noted in the draft review, Robin quit baseball a couple of weeks after being drafted so the Astros had no chance of signing him.
