This will not be useful unless you can fix the horizontal alignment. Word wrap is killing you by adding space in only one column at a time.
Looks pretty normal to me....the 'Signed' column needs to be moved up one space though and possibly the 'Date of Birth'You tipped me off to the problem. If youmake the page wide enough, everything lines up (including the "signed" column). Make it narrower, and line wrap kills you.

Your table is a little hard to read. Are you using a widescreen monitor? Because on a laptop or regular monitor, the table is squished and off.
I'm on a laptop and see it just fine.

Hartsville sports fans have become accustomed to hearing the name Jordan Lyles. Lyles was a member of Hartsville High School’s state champion baseball team in 2007.
He broke every major school receiving record in the 2007 football season for the Foxes on his way to an all-state award and a trip to the Shrine Bowl. And, he was a preliminary choice for McDonald’s All-American in basketball at the beginning of the 2007-08 season.
He finished the 2008 baseball season with a 1.86 ERA and a record of 7-2.
Good work OSF!
One nit, how can Kirkland Rivers be a RHP that is L/L? Is it an Aggie thing?

"1112 Rivers, Kirkland Texas A&M U RHP L/L 6'01" 195 1986-01-06 SR" LINK (http://houston.astros.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2008/drafttracker.jsp?p=1&s=30&sc=pick_number&so=ascending&st=number&ft=TM&fv=hou).
22 of 52 signed within a week -- is than an unusually high percentage to be in the fold so quickly?Depends on the draft, if you draft alot of 4yr SRs, then it is low, if you draft mostly HS players it can be considered high... It is about what you would expect at this point, I think.
Gaston has not agreed to a contract with the Houston Astros. He said he would sign when he arrives in New York on Tuesday. Gaston will play for the Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y.
“I’m still looking at the contract,” he said. “I will sign.”
Gaston was drafted by the Astros in the seventh round of the major-league draft on Friday. He said he was expecting to sign for more than the $120,000 slot.
“I’m definitely excited,” he said. “Now I get to look forward to my pro career.”
Seaton, who is a Tulane University signee, said he will be strictly a pitcher wherever he goes. He said he has had talks with the Astros several times since he was selected, and the sides will continue to talk.
“It’s a tough decision, but I know it will work out in the end,” Seaton said. “Everybody has been really happy for me, and my friends and family are standing behind me through thick and thin. They are hoping for the best for me.”
Looks like the 7th round pick is going to be in the fold: (http://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/story/409307.html)
Duman, I really appreciate all your work on keeping us up to date on signings.
question--do y'all think mgmt will ask DQ to help convince some of these guys to sign? i'm thinking of Seaton especially.
I don't think DQ is going to be used at all with anyone. Last year, they used Nolan with at least one of the lower drafted kids who signed (Pitkin). That is not an option this year. I would wonder about Bags or Biggio being used.
However, with Seaton, it will come down to the $$$. I hear Green is his favorite color. It will either be green cash & Greeneville or he will pitch for the Green Wave of Tulane. Just pure speculation, I would put his chances of being signed at 60%. He has stated he is an Astro fan, that might carry some weight with him.
OSF does damn good work everywhere.

DQ is too radioactive. I don't think they'll come anywhere near him. I agree with Duman that Bags and/or Biggio might be brought to bear on the young man, though.
Just to be a contrarian, that was the story with Patton, too, wasn't it? And look where he wound up.

how much?
Was this guy really thought of a strong-lean-to-college like Patton. I don't read all the reports, but I never got the impression that he was a sure first round talent who was avoided due to signability. I just assumed he was a guy that the experts had slightly higher than the clubs drafting.

Astros Gamenotes (http://presspass.mlb.com/dbdocs/77/115/2300_1775.pdf) announced the signing of Steele and Gaston today, noting that "Houston has now signed 24 of the 52 players from their 2008 First-Year Player Draft class." This is a bit different from information in the Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5834767.html) which noted that Shuck and Pettus had also signed (which would make 26). The other 'discrepancy' from Draftees and Status list is the inclusion of Grimmett (due to his inclusion on the Greenville Astros roster). Will keep checking...
Chalk another one up that's headed for Greeneville. I am excited about this signing. So that leaves Davidson and Seaton as the only question among the top 10 picks for the Astros... very nice info indeed!

Well, they still have to sign Castro.
I have little doubt Castro will sign. I'm a little surprised but pleased about Dyalphabet and still expect Davidson to ink.Is that hopeful wishing or do you have some extra reason to expect he will?
Is that hopeful wishing or do you have some extra reason to expect he will?
Also I recall thinking Seaton was a long shot to sign when they drafted him, yet I recall hearing lots of favorable (nothing certain) comments about the Astros chances of signing him. As a result there was some debate around here about that too.
That would be pretty sweet to sign all the picks from round 1 through 13.
I am sure Cabrera is somewhere on this but, http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5825459.html
"With Seaton "it's a time process," Heck said."
What exactly does this mean?
Cabrera was probably all over this one too, but interesting comments none the less, http://www.hcnonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=19765560&BRD=1574&PAG=461&dept_id=635506&rfi=6
"Seaton, who is a Tulane University signee, said he will be strictly a pitcher wherever he goes.

With Stanford's elimination out of the CWS, hopefully Castro will be in the fold soon.
"Bobby Heck's optimistic we'll be able to get something done in short order," Wade said. "Every indication we had from Jason going into the draft was he was anxious to sign and begin his career. "I would assume this would be something that would be done in short order and get him playing and advance through the system."
Q (Trey): RJ, Have you heard anything on Ross Seaton and how long do you think it will be before we get him and Jason Castro signed up?
A (Pinwheel): Patience, friend. All the top ones will be signed. There's a pecking order to this stuff as it relates to other high picks.
Metroka is playing, so he has probably signed.

Wow, never heard of that site but that's an incredible amount of info, thanks. Nice especially to read such in-depth scouting reports on the lesser-known guys. Pretty interesting about Steele:
Not sure if you guys have seen this yet. Evals on all picks through the 14th round
http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/draft/2008/Rounds/roundbyround.aspx
But some scouts believe he could be a steal in the fourth round as he is a superior center fielder, has above-average arm strength, gets down the line in 3.9 seconds and can turn on a fastball. Consistent contact continues to be the elusive part of Steele’s game. ...Steele’s upside is significant and he could be an all-star talent if it all clicks.
"We incorrectly reported recently that Dydalewicz had “come to terms” with the Astros. While the family is optimistic an agreement will be made, it hasn’t happened yet."
"We are still in negotiations," said Dydalewicz, an eighth-round pick of the Houston Astros from Lake Travis High School in Spicewood, Texas. "At the end of the month, hopefully we can get this over with." Reports that Dydalewicz signed a contract were incorrect, he said. He's looking for a $500,000 signing bonus and future college tuition to be paid as part of his talks with the Astros.
Keeping Dydalewicz would be a big deal for the Wildcats, who have lost nine of their 18 current and incoming players who were drafted three weeks ago.

With Stanford's elimination out of the CWS, hopefully Castro will be in the fold soon.
Castro gets visit: Joe Graham, the Astros’ North California and Nevada area scout, visited with first round pick Jason Castro on Wednesday. “It went well,” Astros scouting director Bobby Heck said of Graham’s visit with Castro. “It went very well. That’s a better way to put.” *** “I would expect to meet with the family again on Sunday or Monday,” Heck said.
“We’re still optimistic on both he and (Ross) Seaton and a couple of the other guys who are still out there that we’ll get them signed in short order and get them in our system,” Wade said.
I think he will. Don't think the Astros would have taken him in the third round if they weren't prepared to meet his asking price—even after their struggles to sign players last year.
Jim Callis thinks Seaton will sign:

I noticed last week that few of the top guys have signed. Is this likely keeping the Astros from signing Castro, and is Castro's signing a necessary precursor to some of the other picks, such as Davidson, Seaton, and Dydaleiwicz? Everything seems to have come to a standstill.

After missing the entire '07 season rehabbing from injury and having a sub-par draft year, the Astros nevertheless chose him in the 48th round at the urging of area scout, J.D. Alleva. Meszaros was signed Friday after 19.2 innings in the Cape League with a 1.37 ERA and 25 strike outs. "It's an underdog story: 22 yr old Jr., below average stats in spring of draft year, shoulder surgery, and 5'10", 175 lbs. As I type, he is driving to Troy, NY to meet his new teammates later today in Tri-City.''
anything new on the unsigned guys?
anything new on the unsigned guys?
The Astros still hope to sign four more players from the upper ranks of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft: Charles Davidson, an outfielder from Milton High in Georgia; Ross Seaton, a righty from Second Baptist; Brad Dydalewicz, a left-hander from Lake Travis High; and Christopher Hicks, a right-hander from Georgia Tech.
"I'd love to see us run the table," general manager Ed Wade said. "I don't know if that's realistic or not, but we've certainly had conversations that would lead us to think that we at least have a chance to do that. If that's the case, then what's already been a successful signing season will be even more successful."
anything new on the unsigned guys?
By the way, didn't actually type "Dydalewicz," rather described him as "the kid from the Austin area, whose name is very difficult to spell and I won't look it up so I can answer as many questions as possible"...
Impeccable reporting. i wouldn't expect anything less.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the world's dumbest person. Then I read things like that gem from Ortiz.
Dydalewicz. It's not hard. Dy-dal-e-wicz. That man is a fucking idiot.
Per ESPN, he has 'agreed to terms' http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/transactions
JdJO thinks a Seaton signing is imminent. As of 8:05 PM (CDST), he blogged that:
"I won't be shocked. Heck, I would expect that any hour now the Astros will announce that Second Baptist ace Ross Seaton has been signed with the Astros." LINK (http://blogs.chron.com/baseballblog/archives/2008/07/cancel_chicago_1.html)
Why does JdJO think it's imminent that Sheets signs with Houston? Or is this just wishful thinking. If I'm going to think wishfully I would put Sabathia in an Astros uniform before Sheets although Sheets would be a good signing I suppose. He is often injured.
Seaton has signed.

As was Dydalewicz.
Ortiz blogs "Seaton was signed with a bonus higher than slot money."
I guess JdJO is trying to educated someone, but I'm not sure who...
Himself.
But the Chron reported it was 2nd round money for Dydalewicz and it was 3rd. A nit, I know but an expensive nit
Jacksonian / Duman / Farmstros: who are the "draft and follow" guys this year (and I understand this is different from the "draft and follow" of years past)? Meszaros was one, others?
Per McTaggart: They signed third-round supplemental pick Ross Seaton *** to a $700,000 deal on Friday and will give him another $252,000 for college.
It's been a while since I've been out of college, but $60k/year for school? Really? Harvard only runs about $30k/year I think.

Your tuition-meter needs recalibration. Many private liberal arts schools are now in the $40K/year range. Harvard is $50K+.
Tulane costs >50,000 per year with tuition, fees, books, room and board, transportation, and misc crap kids spend money on.
14th round selection Chris Hicks has been added to the Tri-City roster page at milb.com, so it's looks like he has signed. Now if they can get Davidson, they'll have signed every player taken in the first 15 rounds.
I had heard he was close but had not heard he'd signed. Collegiate closer. I'll be curious to see how he's used.
I've also heard the Astros have been pushing to get Poytress and are closing in on him.
I've heard Davidson is still pretty far away.

The Astros are in a bit of a standstill with third-round pick Chase Davidson... "We've just stepped back from negotiations (with Davidson) and let them hopefully review opportunities in front of them," Heck said. "But we intend to have continued dialogue."
Translation: Chase is acting like a pussy and should probably work on getting his mind right in the next few days.
47 hours and counting... From the Jim Callis (Baseball America) chat at ESPN today (<a href="http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=21909>LINK (Insider))[/url]:
George (NY): Do you expect there will be any surprising no-signs Friday?
SportsNation Jim Callis: If I expect them, they wouldn't be a surprise, would they? In terms of players I don't think will sign from early rounds, Allan Dykstra (Padres) is the biggest threat in the first round and Scott Bittle (Yankees) is the biggest threat in the second round. I don't think the Astros will sign Chase Davidson in the third round, and I don't think the Angels will land Zach Cone in the supplemental third round.
Scott (Albany NY): W/ Davidson is it because Drayton won't go that far over slot or because Davidson wants to go to college?
SportsNation Jim Callis: The Astros have gone over slot for guys this year, so that's not the issue.
The thing is, the Astros are in a reasonable position here. They've signed the players they needed to sign and losing one out of the top 20 isn't a huge deal. They'll get a 3S pick next year as compensation if he doesn't sign.
If Crow does not end up signing with the Nats, what are the rules regarding other MLB teams trying to sign him later?
I had heard he was close but had not heard he'd signed. Collegiate closer. I'll be curious to see how he's used.

Heard anything new on Poytress?
"With the support of Ed (Wade), Tal (Smith) and Drayton (McLane), we were very aggressive with our offer today," Astros scouting director Bobby Heck said. "His desire to play college baseball won out, and I don't know of a figure that would have changed that."
Despite an over-slot offer, the Astros were unable to sign 3rd round pick Chase Davidson. He will attend the University of Georgia next year instead. McTaggart Blog link (http://blogs.chron.com/gamedayastros/2008/08/astros_cant_sign_thirdround_pi.html).
If I understand correctly, the Astros will receive a compensatory pick in the 3rd round (supplemental) since they were not able to sign Davidson. Duman/Jacksonian, correct?

Only Chase Davidson (round 3), Josh Poytress (round 16) and Shae Robin (round 20) were not signed from the first 20 rounds.
Going to Miami was something Jankowski thought he might not do during the two-plus months after the Astros drafted him. Now, he will not be eligible for the draft again until after his junior season.
According to Jankowski, Houston offered a "pretty nice deal." He would have been assigned to the Astros' instructional league before playing for the Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros, a rookie-league affiliate.
"They really made me think about it," said Jankowski, who finished his scholastic career with a WPIAL-record 36 home runs in addition to a plus-600 on-base percentage and back-to-back Class AAAA championships.
A project at catcher at the minor-league level, Jankowski opted for Miami in hopes of improving his defense.
