He was released by the Braves round about ten days ago, so the timing is right. Can't hurt to see if the power arm can gain more control than he had with the Bravos this year. He was really struggling this year.

I thought the rule of thumb is that you run, not walk, away from any pitcher the Braves are will to give you.
-
interesting pickup. I remember the braves getting useful results out of him a few years ago. Nice low risk gamble by the mad scientist himself, Ed Wade.

actually the mets released him, which makes plenty of sense as they aren't known for patience.

Ah, thanks... you're correct. He pitched for the Braves at one time (2005/2006?) but had been in the Mets organization lately. Thanks for the pick-me-up. I just remember him being released and the story on why was lack of control. Same thing happened to Byrdak by the way, so juneberno!

Again, Ed Wade is a bullpen tinkerer.
The bullpen around the 7/31 deadline may look nothing like the bullpen around the 8/31 deadline...

IMHO, it's good that he thinks that way. it never hurts to have guys like sosa and byrdak(we've already seen the benefit) in the minors ready when injury or ineffectiveness strikes.

Sosa was downright filthy for the Braves as a starter a few years ago...

He was filthy as a Devil Ray but finally harnessed his stuff and succeeded with the Braves

Like Backe (and Victor Zambrano), a former position player the D-Rays converted to pitcher. FWIW.
He throws hard. I see him as middle relief, possibly.
-
guess we can just sit back and see what developes.. sometimes nice things come of out these deals

Who is dumped at Round Rock?
Houston, I hope.

Sosa is a switch-hitting pitcher. Maybe they'll call him up and bat the pitcher 8th, then move Bourn to the nine-spot.
Just think, it would effectively give the Astros two leadoff hitters.

Must...not...take...literally. Must...stop...banging...head...on...table.

What did I do?

I agree with VB - Houston has a problem. And there is a promotion squeeze as well. Trinidad has been called up to CC, so unless someone goes on the DL, there will have to be movement in CC as well.

Yep. We Astros fans remember him mostly as being the 2005 Game 3 NLDS (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU200510080.shtml) starter.
