Title: All England Championship
Post by: Limey on May 21, 2008, 09:57:39 am
Not Wimbledon tennis you fools!  Europe's Big Cup: The Champions League.  This year, for the first time, being contested by two English clubs owned by rich furriners:  The MU Rowdies and Chelski.

I have only two predictions for this game:

(1)  It will be a dour, tactical, niggly, defensive game that will be entertaining only to those invested in the teams either by fandom or gambling;

(b)  I will be very, very drunk at the end; and

(iii)  It will be decided by a very dodgy decision either for Chelsea or against Man Utd.

What?  You don't think that United have a hope in hell of winning a game in Moscow against a team owned and financed by the Russian mob, do you?

Isn't the match at 2:00 pm this afternoon?  BTW - if you want to watch it live, it's going to be on ESPN (duece I think).  If you want to watch it live on the internet, try this link to have it on a small window on your computer (if your firewall allows it):

I already have this sorted out.  Myself and a few (20-30) other fans of Association Football.

Public Safety Announcement:  Stay away from The Palm on Westheimer today between noon and 5pm.  Far, far away.

The match was pretty much a one sided affair in terms of attack on Chelsea's part, but Man U's counter attacks were brilliant.  Going up 1-nil was good for the squad to deflect some of the emotion coming at them.  The guys who were playing with lots of passion and strength were Lampard and Vevez (sp?).  Vevez impressed me quite a bit, including managing to entice the whole Chelsea team to lose their cool at the end of the second extra time.

For a while there, it looked for all the world that Chelsea was going to grab the cup in regulation time, then in the extra times the way they kept coming at the Red Devils.  When they went to penalty kicks, I thought for sure Ronaldo's horrible penalty kick would doom Man U.  That is when they had that "The Natural" moment and the rains came down hard and knocked down Terry as he was about to put it away.

Van Der Saa then brought up something from his youth and for perhaps one last time, stretched and knocked away the penalty kick and handed the cup to Man U.  Terry was beside himself with agony and Ronaldo with joy and absolution.

Great match.

Terry's kick, for me, was one of those moments that shifts into slo-mo, where I could actually see his foot slipping as he took the kick.  Van Der Saa looked up like he had been granted the miracle he prayed for.

Jon Terry was quoted as saying he longed for a Championship Cup before he retires and this was his moment to put a stranglehold on what he wanted.  And he whiffed with the cruel help from the FBGs (futbol gods).

FTR, I'm not happy because neither team was struck down by plague.

The first thing that came to my mind was "Wide Right".  Shame no one here at the office "gets" that comparison.

For those of you who don't understand the draw soccer has in the rest of the world, use the wives of international soccer players as an example of the pull these guys have.

The sad thing is, many, many, many of the players listed are fucking rubbish.

Reminds me of the sadness I felt for Jim Kelly (more than Scott Norwood).  But then later in life when I saw Jim Kelly speak at the Hall of Fame induction, I knew that the sadness was unwarranted, the man had all his priorities in order.  Kind of like Coach's well written "From The Dugout" entry, men like this know the spirit of the game compels them to compete and know they did their best.

Terry made an incredible headed clearance of a shot from Ryan Giggs (IIRC) late in extra time.  He has nothing to be ashamed of (apart from being a Chelsea player who's rubbish for the national team).

If not for that play by Terry, Chelsea likely would have lost in extra time and not even had the chance at PKs.

No likely about it... it's a near certainty.

Stat question... was that counted as a shot on goal and a save?

Probably yes, and no.
