Not sure, but someone did.

Nick Johnson with a Biggio Box special, 1-0 Nats.

Milledge certainly had me fooled on that Berkman double. I was halfway through saying "fuck!" when I saw it bounce. Of course, I only caught a glimpse of it off the bat.

You'd think that one of these times one of those ground balls would find a hole by accident. His approach and swing would seem to merit better results than he's getting.

It's true (it was the filly that finished second). NBC had the very good sense not to show footage of the horse writhing in pain and being put down. When asked about the decision not to linger photographically on the unfortunate event, the producer commendably replied "well, I knew my wife and kids were watching."

To put it in perspective - my wife and her family are from Kentucky.  She's spent her entire life around horses.  She's been angling for years for us to go to the Derby.  And she announced that, unless they make changes, that was the last horse race she's ever watching.  It was just a last straw.  The breeders have gone too far in pursuit of speed.

Explain that to me. To much breeding for speed resulting in lighter boned horses that can't withstand the pressure of their power when going all out?

Maybe so, but the producer didn't have enough good sense to know that it probably wasn't a great idea to cut to the drunken celebration going on in the Big Brown entourage just about ten seconds after the track vet broke the grim news. Very awkward moment at the least.

As best I understand it.  There's also the factor that they're racing at 3 years old, which as I understand it, translates physically to about a 15 or 16 year old human.

Or twice in three years?

Isn't there some anecdotal evidence that fillies tend to break down racing colts? I can't remember the name of the filly that had that big match race against Affirmed in the late seventies (R--- something?), but the same thing happened to her.

Yes, but the point is that they're racing before the bones are fully developed, which amplifies the breeding issues.

I see. That's interesting. But I think the race has to be the same aged horses it's always been. If changes need to be made, they should be made elsewhere.

Just saw this article:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/sullivan/20080506-9999-1s6sullivan.html

An expert basically says that when speed is the only goal, stamina and accidents like the one that happened at the Derby become a lot more likely.

There's also the accusation of drugs being used on the horse.

Preakness is a lot rougher because they're racing two weeks apart. No horse has been seriously injured in the derby in something like 75 years. I'm not saying that there's nothing wrong with horse racing but to draw MM's wife's conclusion from eight belles is just a lack of perspective, imo.

Bench is right, but the specific answer to your question is Flip Sal in 1974.  However, I don't believe he had to be euthanized on the track.

Just looking at the Derby is the lack of perspective.  Breakdowns have been climbing in thoroughbreds.

Miggy goes opposite way deep in the count but lines out to the second baseman. He seems to always put good swings on the ball in those situations.

The center fielder absolutely got horizontal on the dive for the first hit in the White Sox game.

Damn. No decision again for Chacon.

Seems like they play the Win, Loss, ND up too much for starters. He pitched well, put the Astros in a position to win, that's what matters. Is Chacon or other starters really upset that his stats weren't padded? W-L record is widely known as the most luck driven stat anyway.

4/3 @SD 6 IP, 2 ER, L 2-3
4/8 STL 6 IP, 3 ER, L 3-5
4/15 @PHI 8 IP, 0 ER, L 3-4
4/20 COL 6 IP, 3 ER, W 6-4
4/25 @STL 7 IP, 1 ER, W 3-2
4/30 @ARI 5 IP, 5 ER, L 7-8
5/6 WAS 7 IP, 4 ER, W 6-5

Surprising, I really thought it was better than 3-4.  Its getting easier to forget the suckage that was most of April

Chacon gives good interviews.  Answers the questions, sounds intelligent (no string of cliche's).  I really like him.

I agree.

I just don't like the fact that you can blow a hold or blow a save and then get the win.  One of my pet peeves.

Me too.  He is looking like a much better pick up than I ever thought he would/could be the day he was signed.

There are 11, without a hit.  I remember b/c I got this as our "60 second round" question in the old Texaco Star Challenge... of course, they said there were 10.

Wait. I thought Zipper had this question? Did you both have it on Texaco Star Challenge?

I know I watched one of you answer the question on the show. In fact, I think it was against South Houston (my sister's school).

Didn't see the Chacon interview (one of the few, but acceptable drawbacks of EI), but have been very impressed with interviews I've seen with Wesley Wright.

The main thing is that each of those games was right there to win. Its just bad luck that he doesn't have one on his pitching line yet.

I don't think you can blow anything in a tie game.

Another sweet win by the good guys!

come on, Jane. that is a ridiculous thing to say. first of all, that is the rule. more important, he made ONE bad pitch. he had been unscored on in many consecutive outings. if you demand perfection, you are a fan of the wrong damn game.

I know. Sorry, was at the gym and listening to the game on the radio. (They won't put the Astros game on one of the 6 TVs, fuckers)  Lost track of when he gave up the HR.  Thought the Astros were up by one.

So, I don't like the rule.  Call me ridiculous, tell me to fuck off, still don't like it.  Just my opinion.

Wasn't a knock on the pitcher, just on the scoring rule.

I know I answered it.  I don't remember who we were facing, but being able to write out my 10 answers and givve them to the captain before time started was a very satisfying feeling.

Oh, come on.  I never used the words fair or unfair.  I just gave my opinion on the rule.  I am entitled to have an opinion, whether you or any other person on the planet agrees or not.

But you were picking at her for what you perceived was her picking on Brocail, which she explained she wasn't.  Now you're still picking on her for disliking a rule about relievers being able to buzzard a win... which has been expressed by many baseball men as being somewhat dubious but them's the breaks.

I see her point and think you're the one overreacting at this point.  But then again, that's just my opinion.

yes, it is.

no one is overreacting. after my first post on the "it is a sham" comment, i started teasing her. Andy did a little teasing too. she was irritated, perhaps at both of us. she told me/us where to stick it in her usual direct way.

Jane does not need a protector from being "picked on." Jane is a big girl who can take care of herself quite well, and she and i are good friends. perhaps you're just feeling extra-chivalrous today. i'm sure she appreciates your protection.

I'm not protecting her, I'm stating my opinion because you guys are making it a public issue (you ain't the posting police, are you?) and you seem to be the one that has a thin skin this morning.  my, my, having a bad morning?  If she tells you to stop (in so many ways) why do you think it's a good idea to continue to pick on tease her?

That's all well and good, but if this is public, I can definitely say that I understood Jane's point and felt you overreacted.  My opinion, definitely mine and no one else.  You don't need to defend yourself to me, I'm not that important to waste time nor PMs about.
