Interesting lineup for the good guys today. I'm surprised coop got kabong to take a day off.
-
Interesting, indeed. With Wigginton and Bourn unavailable, I'm surprised to see both Kaz and Flapjack taking the day off at the same time.
-
Matsui?
-
Pence (!!! pending) reaches on an IF single between pitcher and 3b.
-
Coop was giving Kaz a day to rest. He has been playing hard after coming off of the DL. Doesn't want him to over do it. He isn't hurt.
-
Pence (!!! denied) CS on first pitch.
-
You do not run on Bako!
-
I'm listening on XM, I'll try to do PBP
Pence caught stealing.
-
Matsui?
Yeah, I haven't seen anything about him... maybe Coop just wanted to rest him to keep the back at bay.
-
Erstad called strike 3
Top 1st, 2 out.
-
Tejada walks on 3-2 count.
2 out, Tejada on first.
-
Anyone watching the game or are you guys just listening? You are my eyes and ears--and I am sure of many others of us at work that cannot watch or listen.
Thank you in advance for all insight you can give us.
-
I don't know. Strange lineup. Considering that the pitcher is making his first start, it seems to me that the Astros are saying "well, if we are going to lose one, we might as well give everyone some rest."
-

I'm watching. First observation is that regular definition is MUCH worse than HD.
Berkman Bomb! drives in Tejada
-
Berkman is livin' on the air in Cincinnati...
-
god i love when berkman plays the reds
-
Dang, Lance... I didn't even see where that ball landed!
Another first inning assault,2-0 Astros.
-
I'm watching. First observation is that regular definition is MUCH worse than HD.
Berkman Bomb! drives in Tejada
Always seems to happen after a CS.
-
Blum strikes out swinging
mid 1st, 0 left, Astros 2, Reds 0.
-
Bottom 1st
Corey Patterson reaches on bunt single.
-
Bad form by Towles. He just stabbed at that ball.
-
Cassel's just a bit amped up. Held on to one too long and threw it to the backstop.
-
Cassel WP, Patterson to 2nd.
-
Hairston rolls to 2nd base, 1 out, Patterson advances to 3rd.
Reds announcers can't stop praising Hairston's awesome ability to hit weak grounders the other way.
-
Towles then turns his chest protector the wrong way on a ball in the dirt; fortunately, Patterson does not score.
-
Reds apparently end the inning , I missed it.
End 1st, Astros 2, Reds 1.
Gotta go to lunch but I'll be back in 45 or so.
-

Nice job Jack!
-
These 2-out runs are very, very pleasing to me.
-
What did Cassel's hit look like, lucky swing, or legit? and how deep did Hunter take that fly ball? Looks deep on gameday
-
Laptop barfed.
Spaz swung at the first pitch and flied out to Griffey on the track for the final out.
1 run in. 3-2
Cassel's hit looked legit. Nice level swing on a fastball and poked it up the middle.
-
Cassel
strike looking down the middle, strike swinging on a fb, single up the middle, Towles comes home.. safe!
RBI single for Cassel.. called by JD.
I loved Deshaies' reasoning for assuming Cassel's a decent hitter: "Well, his brother's an NFL quarterback..."
PAJ: it was a nice swing on 0-2 count, hard GB up the middle. COnverted 2B Hairston came up empty on the dive.
-
Dunn first pitch swinging out to deep centerfield where Erstad hauls it in.
Encarnacion singles.
Hattiburg finds the left-center gap for a double, driving in Encarnacion.
1 out
-
JD on Hatteberg's RBI double: "Must've given him the double in the gap sign"
-
The Redlegs are hitting the ball VERY sharply off Cassell.

The Redlegs are hitting the ball VERY sharply off Cassell.
I take it his sinker isn't sinking.
-
I take it his sinker isn't sinking.
Perhaps he's feeling 'too strong' today...

-
Corey Patterson
ball low, fouled back on a high pitch, fouled down first base line, Cassel is up too much, fouled to the left, ball inside and up, ball way outside, strikeout swinging on something up!
3 outs.
-
Nothin you can do about it, but Cassell facing the same team Sampson pitched against the day before probably doesn't help.
-
I take it his sinker isn't sinking.
His ball has movement, but it's not sinking.
-
Erstad - Fouls off the first pitch, Popped up to center field on a straight change.
1 out
-
Tejada, grounds first pitch to Hairston at short,
2 out

Love that Silverlight feature. They also have highlights of the Reds hits. Cassel leaving fat changeups over the plate appear to be the main problem.
-
What did Cassel's hit look like, lucky swing, or legit? and how deep did Hunter take that fly ball? Looks deep on gameday
Hunter didn't hit the ball hard, but it carried to the edge of the track.
-
Berkman, strike looking, fastball up for a ball, fastball up and in for a ball, slider outside for a ball, fouled off a low change up, foul, foul, fb inside for ball 4.
2 outs.
-
Berkman SB? WTF??
-
Berkman steals 2nd! Bako's throw way off
Blum swings, grounds to Hattiburg at first, 3 outs.
-
Berkman SB? WTF??

Two outs.
-
Free-swinging Phillips swings at one in the dirt, fouls off a nice changeup, ball outside, fouls off a sinker (might be starting to get a feel for the sinker), grounds a sinker to Tejada who gets him with a strong throw.
Three outs.
-
(might be starting to get a feel for the sinker),
Let's hope so.
-

-
Cheito - strike swinging, grounds to Phillips at 2nd,

-
Loretta, strike, fb low, fb in, foul, fouled out to Hattiburg.
2 outs. Time for a rally.
-
Towles, swings at a high FB, and again, ripped foul down the 3rd base line, fouled a high fb out of play, Encarnacion catches the pop foul at the edge of the stands.
3 outs.
-
Chieto's contribution has been rather anemic so far.
-
I've lost track. Inning? Score? Thanks, no tv/radio here.
-

Middle 4: 3-3

mlb gameday is your friend. Your machine-like scorekeeper friend.
-
Encarnacion, strike looking, ball, ball, flies to left center where Erstad corrals it.
2 outs.
Someone grounded out on the first pitch, three outs.
-
mlb gameday is your friend. Your machine-like scorekeeper friend.
Not to mention my subject lines.
-
No internets here, either. Otherwise I agree about Gamecenter. Thanks for the updates.
-
Cassel, looks at a fb on the outside corner, grounds to Encarnacion

-
Pence! So long slump
-
Pence swings at the first pitch and smacks a hanging slider to the gap in left center. Stand up double.
1 out
-
Erstad looks at a 94 MPH FB on the inside corner, ball, changeup inside and low, broken bat single over 2nd, Pence comes home!
-
The broken piece of the bat smacked the ump in the head-btw.
-
Pence! So long slump
13 for 25 over this 7 game hitting streak. Wow
-
Tejada, throw over, strike looking on a fastball, slider low, fly ball deep to center.
2 outs.
-
Berkman, throw over, ripped into the right field corner, Erstad goes 1st to home! 2 out double!

-
Even with a weird lineup, the runs keep on coming in. Erstad and Blum were great pickups.
-
No internets here, either. Otherwise I agree about Gamecenter. Thanks for the updates.
sorry, missed the little phone-icon thingy.
-
Berkman treats Cincy like a rented mule.
-
Blum at the bat, changeup for a strike, fouled down the first base line, fouled back, popped up to Griffey in right, running in to the line, makes the catch.
3 outs.
-
Seen a couple times now where Griffey caught the 3rd out with a runner on, and he kind of started to look if he needed to make a throw. Wonder if he keeps losing track of the outs, or simply takes a "just in case I was wrong" attitude always.
-
Bako - Excellent chage strike swinging, changeup grounded to Berkman, tosses to Cassel
1 out.
-
Cueto strike looking, ball low, ball low, high pitch fouled off, queued off the end of the bat foul, foul in front of the plate, Towles to Berkman.

Jinx.
-
Wasn't me, it was JD who said it
Hairston - throw over, throw over, Patterson faked going, Towles threw to Berkman and nailed him!
3 outs
-
I can't believe Jocketty hasn't already called Jay Bruce up for Corey Patterson.
-
I'm back!
Patterson CS on what Marty Brenneman calls a "terrible baserunning decision."
Reds announcers are repeating the Oswalt trade rumor BS.
-
I can't believe Jocketty hasn't already called Jay Bruce up for Corey Patterson.
It might be happening as we speak
-

2 outs.
-
Towles - changeup low, grounded to Encarnacion at 3rd, throws across to get him

-
Reds announcers really getting some mileage out of the Oswalt non-story. Dumbfuck Brantley says "Boston may be interested in Oswalt."
-
Hairston -- FB strike looking, fb low, nice sinker fouled off, sinker outside, changeup smacked into center field, pitch stayed up.
Cooper out for a pitching change.
-
I don't blame the announcers. I would avoid talking about the Reds whenever possible, too.
-
68 pitches for Cassel on the day
Byrdak on the hill to pitch to Griffey Jr.
strike looking, ball, foul, PONCHE! looking
1 out
-
I don't blame the announcers. I would avoid talking about the Reds whenever possible, also.
I'm sure they wish Oswalt and Berkman would get traded out of the division.
-
Reds with some stupid-ass plays on the basepaths today.
-
Another Red gets picked off-this time it's Hairston Jr. Marty Brennaman sounds like he's ready to crawl inside a whiskey bottle.
Philips flies to right.
End 6th, Astros 5, Reds 3.
-
The Reds' team era would drop a point if Berkman left the division.
-
Phillips -- bunch of fouls, Hairston picked off Berkman-Tejada-Byrdak
Phillips flies out, Pence makes a nice running catch.
3 outs
-
Reds with some stupid-ass plays on the basepaths today.

-
Top 7th, Dunn pops to 3rd
1 out, Astros 5, Reds 3
-
Byrdak's hit was his first major league hit.
Nope. He is now a .667 career hitter.
He was 1 for 2 with the Royals.
http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/players/playerpage/13117
Jim Deshaies also assumed incorrectly that Cassel's hit was his first major league hit. He was 1 for 8 with the Padres last year. It was his first RBI though.

-
Encarnacion -- strike looking, poked out to left center for a single

Hattiburg -- strike, foul, foul, grounded to Berkman who goes to Tejada, no one covering first so FC.

Bottom 7, Hatteberg on 1st, 2 down.
-
Bako -- strike swinging on a low and outside pitch, grounded to Loretta to Berkman
3 outs
-
Nice job Byrdak.
-
Hattiburg -- strike, foul, foul, grounded to Berkman who goes to Tejada, no one covering first so FC.
2 outs.
On replay, it looks like Byrdak might have made it there in time for the throw, but was probably a wise move by Tejada to hold off on the throw.
-
Kent Mercker on the hill
Berkman from the right side-- strike looking on the outside corner, fouled back, ripped into right field past a diving Hattiburg.

Cooper comes out to get Brydak and replace him with Brocail after a pinch hitter for Mercker had been announced.
Byrdak really strengthens Cooper's hand with the bullpen
-
Matsui pinch hitting for Brocail -- ball in the dirt, strike looking on a changeup, ball high, foul out of play to the left, strike 3 looking on a nice slider.
3 out.
Valverde coming in to pitch the 9th.
-
Come on Valverde. I want a 1-2-3 inning, your first of the year.
-
Byrdak really strengthens Cooper's hand with the bullpen
I hope Byrdak can keep it up. Looks like Wright and Bydrak can get righties out as well.
-
Come on Valverde. I want a 1-2-3 inning, your first of the year.
I thought he had a 1-2-3 in his last outing against the Friars?
-
Let's read a 1 2 3 ninth!
-
I thought he had a 1-2-3 in his last outing against the Friars?

-
You are correct. I want a 1-2-3 inning for a save.
Gotcha.
-
1 down. Come on Jose.
-
Dear BBGs, please read carefully... it is a wish, not a demand for 1-2-3, but anything will do for now, as long as you deem a save for Hair On Fire Jose.
Gracias.
-
2 down. Nice Jose.
-
Phillips -- strike looking on the outside, ball off the outside edge, swinging at a ball on the ground, ball outside and in the dirt, blocked by Towles, high fastball, half-swinging strikeout!

Great win. 5 in a row! Thanks for the pbp, Nate.
My pleasure. Fantastic win today.
-
PS: Great PBP Nate, thanks!
I second that, thanks!
-
Valverde looked relatively subdued out there after getting Dunn swinging for the last out. Great game, nice to see Brocail bounce back too.
-
This team looks pretty solid right now.

This team looks pretty solid right now.
yep. i thought it did when it was losing. if the pitching does not get too much worse, fun season.
-
yep. i thought it did when it was losing. if the pitching does not get too much worse, fun season.
Except for the blowout game that Sampson had, it has been a ton of fun so far. I toggled back and forth between the Gamezone and SI's bosxscore the whole game. On to the Jakes.
-

I agree. If Wandy holds up we can make a run. I really like what I have seen out of him lately.
-
I agree. If Wandy holds up we can make a run. I really like what I have seen out of him lately.
Wandy has to hold up and Chris Sampson has to be Pete Schrouek for the first half. If the Astros are in it, then it gives WadeSmith a reason to go to Temple and ask for a pitcher.

Wandy=LimaTime?
If Wandy can = Casa Ole circa 98 or 99, the Astros can win this division handily.

WadeSmith's Jewish??
...
Oh, not that Temple. Well, I just feel silly now.
-
Oh... that was my thought as well.

***Fantastic win today.
But alas, even winning has its price...
Berkman turns ankle celebrating - Chron 'Updates' Link (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bb/5728893.html)
Even though he needed to have his right ankle iced and wrapped after the 5-3 victory over the Reds, Lance Berkman doesn't expect to miss any time with the injury he suffered celebrating after Jose Valverde earned the save.
"Are you kidding me?" he said. "I'm a warrior."
Berkman was able to laugh at himself after turning his ankle.
"I didn't hurt it bad," he said. "I got a trick ankle that if I step on an uneven surface sometimes it rolls. Seriously, so it's a little embarrassing but coming off the mound and giving high fives I stepped on the side of the mound and rolled it."
-
Taking a page out of sorryano's book there... not cool Lance.
-
Except for the blowout game that Sampson had, it has been a ton of fun so far. I toggled back and forth between the Gamezone and SI's bosxscore the whole game. On to the Jakes.
I disagree. I told my wife I just want to watch the first inning. Felt like a watched an entire game!
