Title: Where does our talent come from
Post by: Duman on January 22, 2008, 03:48:26 pm
Baseball America has posted how each team's top 30 prospects were acquired (http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=702)

Here is the Astros breakdown:

College 14 (A's have 18 to lead all teams)
Junior College 4 (second only to the Dodger's 5)
High School 5 (Angles lead with 14)
Draft & Follow 0 (Brewers lead with  eight )
Non Drafted FA 0 (No one has more than one)
International 4 (Mariners lead with 11)
Trade 1 (Rangers lead with 9 thanks to their big profile trades last season)
Rule 5 1 (Reds have two)
Indy Leagues 0 (Yanks have two)
Minor League FA 0 (Pirates have 3 including Jimmy Barthmaier)

Is there a link or info somewhere on who BA considers Houston's top 30 prospects to be? They only go so far as the top 10 annually.

You have to pay them for that information.

Or be cheap like me: Go to your local Barnes & Nobles after the book comes out, and sit down in a nice chair, read the astro section put the book back and walk out the door.

With out looking at the top 30, here is my guess of where some of the guys fit.  The deadline for the book on transactions was Dec. 13 so that means - Gutierrez is still in but Patton & Constanzo are out.

4 International -
Paulino
Gutierrez
Gervacio
Either Trinidad or Severino

1 Trade -
Bourn meets their criteria (not ours)

Rule 5 -
Wesley Wright would be my guess

4 JUCO -
Towles
James
Flores
Parraz

5 HS -
Clemens
Sapp
Einertson
Douglass?
Torrence?

The 14 college kids will take more guessing

But there are a few obvious ones off the top of my head:
Iorg
Bogusevic
Manzella
probably Buchanan
maybe Ori and Sheldon?
maybe even Saccomanno??

Others to include would be:
Perez
Norris
Delome
Chris Johnson
Qualben
Fairchild
Reineke
Muecke
Torbert

Some of the ones you listed plus the ones I listed are stretches.  I can't wait for the book to hit the stores so I can see the full list.
