"I'm angry that that what I've done for the game of baseball ..." Those were the first words out of Roger Clemens mouth in the Wallace interview. No matter what else he says, this condemns him. Not in the illegal substance kerfuffel, who cares anymore. But it betrays the kind of person he is. Baseball has given him an income such that his grandchildren wont even have to wipe their own butts (unless he gives it all to Rusty Hardin in defense of his "glorieux".) Merely because he could throw a baseball fast. He owes baseball, baseball owes him nothing.

True, baseball owes Roger nothing. But, I, for one, have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated Roger's contributions to the game. And I assure you, lots of other folks have too.

thats true baseball has been very good to mr c. and to pose the question how would baseball be changed right now if mr roger rocket drama queen himself had not walked in the door.. yes some of the records might be different, but in the game it seems there is always someone waiting at the door for their chance

I think, Roger, that's the whole point. You've gotten plenty of respect, adoration, riches....get to stand on the sidelines at UT football games. The whole idea that we were worshipping a false god is on us and we don't like it.

Gives you a whole new appreciation for Bidge and his endless stream of cliches, doesn't it? I can't count how many times in the last year I heard him say "We just owe everything to the game of baseball." He may not be the most interesting interview, but I prefer him to blustering egomaniacs like Clemens.

A lot of players say 'make 'em take it off of you, play as long as you can, it's your right. The game owes you that.'

I tried to put myself in his place and give him the benefit of the doubt. Then, after listening to him for a few minutes and watching him squirm and blink and fidget and bluster he seemed to be the epitome of the guy who is angry he got caught.

The two things he said that seemed the most "unbelievable" to me were his assertion that he had no idea what Andy Pettitte was doing until Andy confessed to it, and 2) had never thought about his chances for the Hall of Fame (when asked if enhancing his credentials was one of the benefits he hoped to gain from using).
Other than Pete Rose, I don't know of a baseball player who was more aware of his Hall of Fame standing that Roger. He even claimed that as the reason for his first retirement because he wanted his ailing mother to be there for the induction ceremony.

It was the most honest thing he said in the whole interview. Very much fits in with what I have heard of his personality. This, for him, boils down to "I'm Roger Fucking Clemens, how DARE you question me?!?!"

Of all the questions Mike Wallace DIDN'T ask Clemens, the one that I really wanted answered was where Clemens got that customized "ROCKET" chair so that I too could invest in a "HURRICANE" chair for my basement.

RE: body language - he looked down and broke eye contact quickly after the denial about Andy's use.
Fear and anger have alot of the same physiological effects so it is often hard to tell, but breaking eye contact quickly is a pretty good indicator. We'll see how it all turns out.

He did the same thing when he denied having steroids injected, and in response to the next question when he answered "lidocaine and B12".

That's pretty much what he said to the gathered sports reporters at his news conference earlier this afternoon, just seconds before he stomped off stage...
Seems someone had the temerity to ask about the HOF...
