Title: Biggest Houston disappointment? (partially non-bb)
Post by: MusicMan on December 11, 2007, 08:45:06 am
Ahh, the preseason... in all sports... a time when even minor tweaks to a team are seen as a complete facelift and provide newfound hope for all fans.

This summer, even the national mediots bought into the new layer of spackle the Rockets had added to a weak foundation; many even picked them to win the title.  "Look at these supporting players!" they said.  "Now Yao and T-Mac have the help they need!"

Over 1/4 of the season is gone, and the Rockets look not only like they will not win the title, but that they will not even make the playoffs.

Which got me to thinking... which Houston team has most vastly underachieved versus their preseason expectations?

What others am I forgetting?

The 97-99 Rockets (with Pippen & Barkley) were pretty rough.  Trading away Sam I Am was possibly the worst H-town trade of the 90's.  He was the only one who could keep a lid on Stockton, unlike Matt Moloney.

Buffalo!

I'll say no more.

  • 2007-8 Houston Rockets (possibly premature)
  • 2000 Houston Astros: 3 straight division titles, a move to a new ballpark... and a crash and burn
  • 2005 Houston Texans: coming off a 7-9 season, with some expectations to compete for a playoff spot, the team proceeds to 2-14, and a #1 draft pick headache
  • 1987 Houston Astros: from the high of the 86 NLCS and the Greatest Game Ever Played to a 76-86 record
  • 1994 Houston Oilers: letting go of Moono was known to be a gamble, but 12-4 to 2-14??

What others am I forgetting?

How about the 100-win 1998 Astros.  OK they ran into a San Diego team who decided to burn The Plumber in order to progress, but they also got smoked by Sterling Hitchcock and started the Unit twice themselves!

Twas why I removed it, but the beer and the frustration had me bawlin' like a child that night, and I wasn't even a Houston native or alumnus, nor did I live here in those days.

Firing of Bum Philips after the loss in Oakland.
Letting Nolan Ryan have the chance to sign with the Rangers in 1988.
The beaning of Dickie Thon.
Oilers losing to Joe Montenga and Chiefs in 1993.
Mike Renfro catching the touchdown in 1979.

And I think (hope) you're being premature on the Rockets this year.

If we're talking singular heartbreak:

1a. The Buffalo Debacle
1b. Game 6 vs sTEM

3. Walt Weiss
4. John Elway in '91
5. Lorenzo Charles

If we're talking season-long disappointment, it's the 2000 Astros by a mile. Lima Time! Also, the Oilers divisional playoff loss at home to the Montana-led KC Chiefs coming off a first-round bye merits some mention.

Losing the Oilers was devastating. My childhood was affected by the successes and failures of the Astros, Oilers, and Rockets, but the Luv Ya Blue Oilers is where my love of sports was born. Having to see all these douchebags in Austin in their #10 Titans jerseys just makes me seethe. Fuckin bandwagoners.

That reminds me, Casa Ole is a disappointment too.  If you're a Tex-Mex place in this town and you can't even get fucking margaritas right, you deserve to have the prancing assclown as your mascot.

For me, Game 5 against the Phillies in '80 and the Renfro catch were both more painful than Elway in '91.

And I'm not quite sure what to make of the fact that Walt Fucking Weiss is the anagramatic equivalent of Wah Fucking Wah. Does that mean that we're just supposed to get over Weiss? Or is it some cosmic joke?

If they AREN'T from the south, then Richmond's an awfully odd place to put a museum paying homage to Confederates who lost their lives in the War of Northern Aggression, as they called it.

that's fresh.  i prefer "broken down" or "stalled" carr myself.  but it is really sad how far carr has fallen since having a pretty decent 2004 season.

one of my toughest H-Town sports memories was the KC game too.  that Oilers team had the complete package--the offense led by Moon and the "House of Pain" defense.  i still remember the TE for KC, either Kerry or Keith Cash, throwing the ball into that banner of Buddy Ryan after catching the TD from Montana and then seeing Montana's wife celebrating in the stands.

The Cougars were expected to win, thus a greater let down.

The Stros made a great (historic) run to get to the playoffs and were in the WORLD SERIES! For Christ sakes.  Thus for me, losing was not as huge of a let down.

Edited for my GD spelling again

It depends on how you define "disappointment".  If you mean disappointment in that you expected something and got nothing in a 2000 Astros/Derek Chievous kind of way, then Phi Slamma Jamma was not disappointing at all.  If you mean in a heartbreak/we got so close and couldn't get over the hump kind of way, then yeah Phi Slamma Jamma was disappointing.  Perhaps a better analogy is the 1980 or 1986 Astros.

Made worse by the fact that Phi Slamma Jamma had in effect the basketball equivalent of a series lead...how many games up to be debated, but I'd offer a 3-2 lead going home to finish.  NO ONE foresaw that upset; it was on par with Nova's upset of Georgetown.

Villanova over Georgetown was way bigger.  People remember the '83 UH team because of what Clyde Drexler and Hakeen Olajuwon went on to do later and because Jim Valvano died, but in terms of underdog beating the heavy favorite, it's not even close.

How about lets let this season play out first before ranking it on a disappointment list. Adelman teams in the past have taken 2-3 years before becoming polished consistent winning teams. Besides all we need to do this year is make it out of the first round anything less is a disappointment.

On the "series" thing, I was trying to draw a parallel.....badly, I might add.

Sporting News lists them one-two in terms of upsets, with NC State's the bigger one--sentimental edge, I'm sure.  Regardless, I'll stand by my "...on par with..." description and beg to differ with your "...not even close."

To the Sporting News "bigger" = "more memorable".  I don't deny that.  I'm saying in terms of the difference in quality of the two teams and the weaker team winning, it's not really close.

I hear ya'; NC State had won the ACC tourney to get in, so they were DEFINTELY a team on a roll.  No such story for 'nova.  Both teams had lost double digit games, though, I think...were both really low seeds...both double digit dogs.  More similarities than we realize.

In my view the biggest thing that stands out between the two games was HOW they were won.....Nova WON it, while Houston LOST it.  That night in Lexington the 'cats played as close to a flawless game in Rupp Arena against Georgetown as a team could play.  What did they miss, one shot in the second half?  Regrettably, UofH played "down" to NCState in the appropriately named Pit in Albuquerque.

Valvano orchestrated the slowdown, and Guy had it beat before deciding to slow it down himself.  I often wonder if it's THAT GAME which is keeping him out of the coaching hall of fame.  He shouldn't have to go in posthumously, but he just might.

I know...shut the fuck up; this is a BASEBALL board!
