Why? He would seem better served to heal up the nagging injuries that plagued him all year.

For fun maybe. Isn't he at least some kind of minor deity down in Venezuela?

He recognizes Chavez' new edict on personal purity as a cleansing elixir through which he can rid himself of the bad habits and other unsavory scourges picked up from dirty dirty Ensberg.

No one plays winter ball for fun. Some of the Latin players do it because it's a force of habit and enhances their star power at home regarding endorsements. Otherwise, remember, to these guys, baseball is a job.

The linked article quotes Wade as saying that Scott needs to "get at-bats and come to camp healthy and force our hand one way or the other." I took that to be the explanation for why Scott is playing winter ball.
I am interested to see how Scott performs in response.

Chances are he will exceed expectations, but I wouldn't be surprised if he were then traded.
This move may actually be designed to enhance his value.

A force of habit? Like taking siestas, or overthrowing the government?
Most players now claim to take two weeks or a month off, then start their off-season workout regimen. I would think actually playing against other major leaguers would be as good or better than lifting weights. Plus, one can enjoy the weather. Learn another language. Immerse oneself a culture one had been previously ignorant about.

So, what happens if he gets hurt down there? And what if he doesn't perform well there? We're going to use winter league ball to make a big time determination? I think not. I think that Luke is ill-advised to play. I'd work my ass off, stay healthy and come into camp in mid-season form. If he thinks that winter ball will do that, that hasn't been my experience over the years.

I think that this is the 3rd year in a row that he has played down there. I think that he likes it down there and he is a hard worker.

I think that you're right, but he has to understand that he is getting a little older.
