I'm amazed tha this board doesn't already have a special place for those who've over indulged to post their nonsense while still unde the effects of alcohol.
Normally, as a Clrak I wouldn't have the guts to post this here. But since my drinks tonight were purchased by the one and only Ben Sheets himself. I think I'm due a pass.
Sheets is huge, friendly, and generous, and at one point asaid he'd like to play in Houston and that he'd hear d that Jake Peavy wants to play here too. you heard it here first.
I'm gonn a have such a headache in the morning...
-
You are definately in a sheets to the wind state.
Sleep deeply and dream of large women, I do not envy the headache you will have in the morning.

Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to post late at night.
To sum up...
Drink more, post less.

Implying that he's already well-qualified on the other two points?

i haven't had any alcohol for four months, but i did get crazy drunk on food at this place http://www.garydanko.com/site/menu.html last night. that's right, gary danko! finally! pancetta-wrapped frogs legs!
also, there was a crazy article in the sf chronicle yesterday about the homeless situation at the transbay terminal (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/09/18/BAOBS820J.DTL, which is the hub for bus travel to every other part of the bay. watch where you step. for anyone who doesn't know, or has never been here, sf has one of the worst homelessness problems of any major city in the country. witness this frightening story about dirty needles in golden gate park:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/08/02/MNTQRBGEL2.DTL&hw=Golden+Gate+Park+Sweep&sn=009&sc=261
also in yesterday's chronicle was a less crazy, but still somewhat interesting profile of bruce froemming's impending retirementhttp://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/09/18/SP60RBRM8.DTL.

We have a "special place." It's called the Talk Zone, or TZ for short. :'(

That's a nice wine list, but it's going to take a pretty extraordinary event to get me to shell out $400-$500 (to say nothing of the $2000 bottles) for a bottle of wine. And I'm a wine guy.

Wha, no Beefy Cheesy Melt?

Their wine list is pretty impressive, a lot of high end producers. Looks like they're going with a 100% markup on the bottles, though, which (unfortunately) is pretty standard in the restaurant business these days. Better to buy one of those bottles retail and forget about it in a wine cellar for a few years.

It takes an extraordinary effort to get me to shell out 75 bucks for a bottle of wine that's $8.99 at Specs.

Do yourself a favor and check out La Vista - you can bring your 8.99 bottle and pay 5 bucks corkage fee. This is one of our favorite restaurants. Love the mussels. Here's their website :

And a write up in the Chron when they opened the Memorial location (usually the one we go to):

What is a corkage fee?
The fee for the restaurant to open your wine and use their glasses.

Website says $7 cork fee, but hey, that's still better than 40 bucks for that $8 bottle of wine. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

wow we need something like that in zwolle, umm dont you just twist the top to open the wine>

You've overestimated Zwolle. They haven't yet figured out how to open the box. They poke a hole in it.

The line item the A's reported for Piazza's contract.

It looks like some of their other prices have gone up a bit too. Still a bargain for the quality of food they serve, plus knowing you'll like the wine. Be prepared for a wait - we usually go around 6pm and plan on sitting outside for a good hour or so. Just pick a fair weathered day to go, good wine, and good company and the wait won't seem so bad.

Can't resist posting some economics....

As you can catch from the URL, this is the Freakonomics duo answering why wine is marked up so much at restaurants...
enjoy.

Not that it completely supersedes the idiocy that kicked off this thread, but Jose de Jesus Ortiz is teasing an interview (http://blogs.chron.com/baseballblog/archives/2007/09/rumors_should_s.html) with Peavy tomorrow wherein he says that he'd like to play in Houston or Atlanta if SD doesn't work out. So Sheets wasn't completely speaking out of turn when he said that.
That'd be a big splash for the new GM...
-
Doesn't Peavy have at least one more year on his deal?
Doesn't matter, if we get a good GM, the rotation will be Oswalt, Santana, Peavy, Sheets, Williams. And all it will cost is Orlando Palmerio.

I'd rather not give up a proven veteran. A really good GM will get that done for a minor-leaguer.

Obviously. Isn't Carlos Hernandez still in the system somewhere? Can we get someone who'll convince Kevin Towers that he's the next Rick Ankiel, without the HGH.

So "poke" is Louisianan for "puncture with a shotgun blast?"

A good GM wouldn't give up a veteran pinch-hitter. A good GM would only have to give up Jason Lane. Of course he'd also get the Padres #1 prospect as part of the deal and only having to throw in Burke.
-
LEAVE JASON LANE ALONE!!! YOU'RE LUCKY THAT HE EVEN PERFORMS FOR YOU!!!!

IF YOU DON'T LEAVE JASON LANE ALONE, YOURE GONNA HAVE TO DEAL WITH ME-Hee-hee...

Hmm let's see:
Oswalt: $15 Mil/yr
Santanna: $20 Mil/yr
Peavy: $18 Mil/yr
Sheets: $15 Mil/yr <--- will seem like $30 Mil when you consider he only pitches 1/2 a season anyway.
Berkman: $14.5 Mil/yr
Lee: $18.5 Mil/yr
$101 Mil just for those 6 players, throw in another $30 Mil or so for the other 19, maybe as much as $40 if Lidge is still closing.
We are talking a $150 Mil payroll for a team that ought to win 100 games every year for about the next 5 at least.

If it is down to either believing what an award-winning, accredited journalist like Ortiz says, or what a ripped-to-the-tits drunk Astro fan/blogger reports at 3:00 in the morning on the message board of a fan site even Greg Lucas apparently doesn't read, well . . I'm gonna have to think about that one for a moment. But not for too long.
Meantime, I think I'll have a carafe (Mason jar) of the Zwolle zinfantdel, please; the one with the fruity aroma, and the vague gunpowder-and-lead-shot aftertaste.

No no no -- a good GM would get the other teams to pick up most of those guys' salaries.
