I heard the "Johnny Utah brought his friends tonight" one in tonight's game. I guess Hurricane Humberto made for some good waves.
Edit: Cabrera's a Brave on the Milo thread
Are these done to make fun of Milo? He has no clue? Isn't that sort of disrespectful?

I was listening last night, and Milo asked if the card of "distinguished guests" that he was reading from had been OK'd to read. The list of guests now needs someone's (sorry, can't remember whose) signature on the back.
Wonder if someone has caught on and is checking for fraudulent names.

How'd they figure that out? OWA isn't the Astros fan site that everyone reads. At least according to Lucas.

Not to mention the fact that we've had several previous threads on this.

I think OWA was conspicuous by its absence the other night when he was touting AstrosDaily.
And, frankly, if I were Lucas/FSNWS, I'd probably refrain from referring his entire viewing audience to OWA, too. They don't need the headaches of screeching parents writing letters about the new phrases their darlings learned at some website that Lucas directed them to. Let them find it on their own.

There was an email sent to the astros from a brewers fan asking why milo was "being allowed" to use false names.
This was sent to Mr. Mike Cannon amongst others.

So much for pulling for the Brewers in the playoffs. They're now dead to me.
-
Things just seemed to get out-of-hand. There were three that I caught the other night (see the other thread) and who knows how many more that went over my head. If just one would have been dropped in every now and then the hilarity might have gone on for some time longer.
Fun while it lasted, though.

Do you think it took a non-Astro fan to point this out because :
a) there is just that much animosity towards Milo
b) people in Houston think TV characters, even the cartoon kind, come to Astros games?

Oh, I get it. But I don't think Lucas is under any sort of delusion that the OWA isn't a part of some (a great many actually) of the Astros fandom's regime of internet reading. We're not everyone's cup of tea for sure, that is very much okay. But the Bus Ride has a very high readership and many fans gets daily minor league coverage found nowhere else as a central repository of information on the farm. The columns and every other contribution in here (let's not limit this to the TZ, the fan forum per se) also get plenty of readership. Lucas is well aware of the OWA presence, so I would suspect he wouldn't say anything really stupid in that regard. Unless of course he *IS* stupid.
I doubt it though.

I'm not sure; might have been Tuesday. I can't even remember why the topic came up, but he mentioned AD as a popular online site for Astros info.
I think it was the same night as the Frank Zappa/Son of Mister Green Genes discussion; was that Tuesday? (And for those who missed it, no, Frank Zappa is not the son of Mr. Greenjeans.)

Don't forget they also feature content by people who essentially have been told to fuck off by Tal Smith.
-
I think the other site gets alot of pub because a) They have the This Day in Astros' History thing that they thought was pretty cool and started using it on their broadcasts; and b) At the time they were noticed Ray was still working very hard on non-forum stuff so it provided a nice bit of info on the team.
I think from a Forum stand-point this place beats down what is over there. Plus this place actually has really good coverage of the games and minors... The only redeeming thing left over there other than the History thing is the links to articles, which if you look around here enough you can find most of those too.

Good point. The "History" section was actually a section that was built for the old Astrosconnection.com (The BFT). When Ray split, he took the author of the History section with him and that was pulled from the BFT. What was also pulled was Ray's ASS (Astros Stat Search). There is no debate that the History section on AD is very good and well done by Bob Hulsey. No one really knows why Hulsey took his ball and went home from BFT, only Hulsey and perhaps Kevin (and I'm not sure if Kevin knows entirely). But he did and so be it.
As for all the other "non-forum" stuff Ray was working on... well... it is a portal newstand. Hence, "AstrosDaily". Like a kiosk on Main Street, the content is from many sources but it is all centrally located. That has been the big push from AD from day one... a one stop Astros landing page... why hassle with search engines, we do it for you! Ray is a very good programmer so he built his search engine routine to gather daily feeds with keywords such as Astros, Houston, et. al. and had it populate his site. Nicely done and a tip of the cap to Ray for it.
But a fansite? I dunno. It has been the cronies on that site who elevated and promoted the site into what it never was and never will be to date. And when media say that it's a great fansite, I wonder more about the media's understanding of fansite as opposed to just a portal information site. If AD is a fansite, then the Chronicle online is too and so is ESPN online. I think there is a fine line and most people understand the difference. Perhaps the problem is that the media does not.
And AD does not have a forum any more either.

There is an art to providing links to articles. One option is to use the Google News Search and have it send you all articles they find with the word "Astros" every day. Then you just dump all the articles in a list and post the title and link. This assumes people don't know to look at the local paper and the team's website.
Another way, which is what I do, is to assess what is the issue of the day and try to find information about that. Then use articles and quotes from those articles, even the ones that don't have the word "Astros" in them, and try to annotate the articles and provide a context to highlight what's going on. That's how we know that the new GM once got stuck in a tree.

I'm no programmer at all, but I'd love to work on a history section. I've been thinking about that.
My vague idea is the nuts and bolts - rosters and stats and stuff - should be included as a handy reference, without trying to reinvent the 72" monster truck wheel that baseball-reference and retrosheet have done already. But avoid just linking to those sites, and becoming another portal.
What could set it apart would be some editorial content, for the meat. There are enough people hanging around here who have a historical long view of the team and who could give a piquant recounting of parts of its history that I think it coud be an outstanding addition to the site.
Though if anyone tries to hold me to this, I am going to claim being as drunk as Bagwell's Beard when I typed it.

EGGSZACTLY! AD has the lazy fan or inexperience to the internet fan in mind. There is a difference betwix both, but both are well served by an Astros portal. Well done AD. But worthy of "fansite" status? I guess in some circles, yes. IMHO - no necessarily, but I'm not the one with the mic and being fed tripe daily via e-mail on how good and well loved "we are".

ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY! NYCU is set apart not because of it's shotgun approach but it's editorial value and really focused view of existing content on the Astros. It is very well focused on what it serves to the reading Astros public.
Again, we're not everyone's cup of tea, but we're also more a fansite than some may realize because that has *always* been our charter. A fansite of the fans for the fans by the fans.

A sort of NYCU of a History Section if you will. Brilliant idea. We will need to talk to Andyzipp about this at our next beer session. Wear a funny hat so we can know who you are in the crowd at the Dew Drop Inn saloon.

all the names suggested here are awsome. but lets hope milo retires before he has a chance to use them all and pray he does not read this website
