Mark and i saw him pitch last night, which was my second time. efficient outing--no Ks (i think), but they did not hit him very hard. lots of lazy fly balls.
not much velocity: 84-87 with a rare bump to 89. most were in the 85-86 range.
Ransom is making the most of Purpura's attendance (if he still was there). he hit a monster 3-run HR to break the game open.

According to the box score, he got one K. This was his 3rd win at home in 3 starts. His home/road split is vastly different. I know it is a small sample but does the park play better for a fly ball pitcher?

not sure what you mean, but it is usually a hitters' park.
for a super whizbang #1 prospect, he's pretty unimpressive. he also may be a solid pitcher.

What I've heard and read so far: he's been inconsistent with his delivery and quality of his pitches; he's clearly tired right now; yet, he's gotten AA and AAA hitters out at a good rate. Doesn't sound like he's ready to make a splash in the majors. Seems as though the foundation to be a very good major league pitcher is there.

i think it is hard to say right now. his stuff is not much, but he is getting them out. that's the name of the game, after all.

no, very different from Sampson. he also threw very hard in HS or so i have heard.

i think it is hard to say right now. his stuff is not much, but he is getting them out. that's the name of the game, after all.
I've seen him pitch when he was hitting 92 regularly and with nasty breaking stuff, essentially better than he is now. If this stretch of mediocre stuff is helping him learn to be a pitcher so much the better. It will be interesting to see whether the Astros shut him down for a couple of weeks or have him grind it out through the rest of the season. They severely limited him 2 years ago after getting a promotion for fear of injuring him. Loving these first hand accounts.

Jim, I can say that I saw Patton pitch on July 21st, and that is definately not the pitcher that I saw pitch against the Oklahoma Redhawks. I payed close attention to the radar gun, and he was consistently hitting 87-88 with occasionally bumping 90 and even 91 a couple of times. He also got like 5 or 6 strikeouts in 7 innings only giving up 2 hits, (only 1 SHOULD have been a hit, the other was a nub shot to Jessie Garcia, where Garcia made a great play to get to the ball and get a throw off, but his throw was off line and pulled the 1st baseman off the bag.) He also had a wonderful change up working, he had his change in the 77-78 range pretty consistently. The only thing I really did not notice was the good curve ball.

i saw his first start in RR...that was about his velocity that night, but i never saw 91. i saw a few, but very few, 90s. he was several mph slower last night than the first time i saw him. i did not notice changeups, but maybe he threw them.
his breaking ball looks flat, but to be fair, i'm behind the far end of the 1B dugout and do not have a good view of the break.

Coach, how does Ransom look at 1st? Is there a chance that they would give him a shot a 1st next season and put Berkman in right?

After having spent two months getting the sheep who parrot his opinions all lathered up, Charlie actually sounded like he was defending Purp yesterday, almost like it was a, "Hey, I just TALK for a living; you people shouldn't read too much into this stuff," moment. Would that PINWHEEL would have such a moment of zen....then retire.

Possibly. He could also be the 4th outfielder/lefty bench power bat.

That is just about where I was as well so I did not have the best view of the bite on his curve.
As for noticing his change, the only reason I said it was a change was because of the huge difference in velocity from one pitch to the next, and how many times when the batters did swing, you could tell that he hand them out on there front foot big time.

I remember Patton throwing 93-94 when he was in the Futures Game. I would assume he is just plain tired, seeing as how the organization wouldn't let him throw hurt.

Isn't throwing ability more important to right fielders than center fielders? Do the Astros think he will improve his accuracy? Is it simply the least damage option?
It seemed like T. Purpura was leaving the option of getting a right fielder open in the recent interview, but maybe you have different information or I misinterpeted.

hey, this team plays Burke in RF. compared to him, Pence will look like Clemente in his prime.
