Pence is playing, not traded?
Looks like you didn't get your wish. At least the team hasn't already thrown in the towel.
Anyway...
Biggio K's swinging
Pence grounds out to third
Lance walks
Carlos pops out to second.
0-0
-
Nice second inning! Bases loaded, no outs but the bottom of the order due up. We've seen that go pear-shaped many a time!
-
Lots of shit happened in the 2nd....Phils score on a couple of doubles. Astros plate three runs on a bases loaded walk by Ausmus, a GIDP by Roy and an RBI single by Biggio.
3-1 Astros in the top of the 3rd.
-
Top 3, a pair of singles by Rollins and Bourn...2-out double by Ryan Howard ties the game at 3.
-
Very next pitch Roy gets a tapper back to the box...heading to the bottom of the third...brand new ballgame, tied at 3. Gotta go back to work.
-
Top 3, a pair of singles by Rollins and Bourn...2-out double by Ryan Howard ties the game at 3.
another Oswalt inning. damn, he cannot put up zeroes. quit bitching about offense and pitch!
-
Berkman draws a leadoff walk.
-
another Oswalt inning. damn, he cannot put up zeroes. quit bitching about offense and pitch!
Good thing Eaton is not looking too sharp. Lots of runs still out there to be scored.
-
Lee goes down on a Ks, Loretta down Kc. 2 away. On the bright side, we learned that Adam Eaton is from Roslyn, Washington, the town in which the greatest show ever on television (Northern Exposure) was filmed. How about that baseball fans?
-
Lambchops lines out to CF, inning over. Still tied headed to the 4th.
-
Dobbs with a broken bat single in the hole between Berkman and Biggio. Someone needs to plug that fucker.
-
Another gork...two on no outs for the Phightin's.
-
Ahhhh...the pitcher's best friend...the ol' 5-4-3 twin killing. Two out, runner on 3B.
-
Oswalt with the punchout...nice job by Roy after a couple of hard luck singles. Still tied 3-3.
-
Dobbs with a broken bat single in the hole between Berkman and Biggio. Someone needs to plug that fucker.
Biggio or Berkman...or Dobbs?
-
Anyone else lose sound?
-
Good thing Eaton is not looking too sharp. Lots of runs still out there to be scored.
Eaton has hung a bunch of meatballs out over the plate and not been punished. Like that one to Ausmus right there. Crap!!!!
-
Anyone else lose sound?
Yup. Why didn't this ever happen to Worrell?
-
Scott grounds out 3U...
Ausmus watches strike three...
Roy down swinging....
U-G-L-Y
-
lost audio as well. anybody catch the trivia answer - mine was late coming out of the break...

Curt Schilling
Tom Gordon

Biggio or Berkman...or Dobbs?
Oh sure, now you chime in when you can make monkey shines.
-
Anyone else lose sound?
JD has a plan...
-
No!!!!!!!!!!! Yvette is moving to Boston for a year!!!
-
WooHoo!!! Yvette's in the booth!!!!
-
SON OF A BITCH... Yvette leaving
-
WooHoo!!! Yvette's in the booth!!!!
JD must have had the mic switch in his pocket
-
Poor Milo has got to be distraught.
-
If Yvette's profundities return from Boston in any manner other than which they left, there'll be hell to pay.
-
Fuck. Yvette couldn't come during a 5 run inning.
-
Not sure what happened, as I was imagining Yvette naked in my hot tub, but I'm pretty sure the Phils didn't score. Headed to the bottom of the 5th, still tied 3-3.
-

You're that good at calculating water displacement?
-
No!!!!!!!!!!! Yvette is moving to Boston for a year!!!
And this after I finally see her in high-def. Oh well, we'll always have 7/3/2007. Maybe I should DVR it.
-
this mlbtv thingy is pretty cool. feel free to welcome me to the century. this is only the second or third game
I have gotten to watch this season.
-
Bottom 5...no runs, a hit, a man stranded.

Did they show Yvette on mlb.tv?
-
Did they show Yvette on mlb.tv?
yes, briefly.
from the way everyone talks about her, i feel like my getting to see her is like daniel catching the fly with chopsticks on his first try.

Ok, back to the game....
Loretta takes one for the team...
Lamb flies out to LF...one away...
Luke Scott, can't handle the hook....2 down...
Bradley grounds into 6U FC....inning over.
-
Don't we get into their bullpen soon?
-
Don't we get into their bullpen soon?
Should do now, Eaton's up 3rd.
-
Don't we get into their bullpen soon?
You'd like to think so. Of course, they're going to get into our bullpen soon, too.
-
Great play by Lamb!
-
Should do now, Eaton's up 3rd.
announcers said nobody throwing yet
-
Good play Lance.
-
NICE DIG by clank!
-
Of course, they're going to get into our bullpen soon, too.
I just threw up a little in my mouth.
-
Big K sparky.
-
by the way, Lee on that hit into the corner - WOW!
i mean, i've been reading about his outfield speed pace for the whole season, but until you see it with your own eyes, you just can't understand.
can we get him a waiver to take the stick horse into the field?
-
Scott looking like Burke out there tonight!
-
Scott looking like Burke out there tonight!
sparky leaving shit up.
-
The Astros currently play three outfielders none of whom is an average defensive player. Lance Berkman in the outfield would be a defensive upgrade. That is difficult to fathom.
-
Nice hit Morgan. Good controlled swing, right for the pitch.
-
and based on this game alone, i have not been blown away with the infield arms. i think i have seen three digs in the dirt so far. I know all about the complaints on Lamb's glove, but is his arm typically a problem?
-
Ensberg singles to right
Bidge bunts him over
Pence walks.
-

you haven't seen the outfield arm goodness yet
-
you haven't seen the outfield arm goodness yet
Which is surprising. They've had opportunities to run on Scott tonight, but for some reason they've been very conservative.
-
you haven't seen the outfield arm goodness yet
i'm looking forward to one of these frisbees from !!! I have heard so much about - just not at a crucial time....
ouch - tough K on Lance
-
Ensberg singles to right
Bidge bunts him over
Pence walks.
Berkman K's.
Lee lines to right, Morgan gunned at home.
Damn.
-
Berkman K's.
Lee lines to right, Morgan gunned at home.
Damn.
crap. i would've been satisfied to see a frisbee from the flying man there
-
OK. That was a good catch.
-
That was fucking funny.
-
PENCE!! corralls a Ryan Howard drive while hugging the flag pole.
-
By the way, MMP is a goddam bandbox.
-
Pence says "I lost it" and Howard says "You motherfucker". Right into my living room.
-
PENCE still looks surprised that he caught it.
-
OK. That was a good catch.
Hell of a catch, but his positioning gave him enough time to make it (which is good).
He broke, got to the base of the hill, paused and looked back, then ran up the hill and made the catch at the top leaning against the pole.
Damn fun stuff.
-
PENCE!! corralls a Ryan Howard drive while hugging the flag pole.
Tracking...tracking...hill...turn and climb it...trackCATCH!!
-
I thought fucking Victorino was supposed to be sore tonight.
-
Has Victorino been ordained pissant yet?
-
I thought fucking Victorino was supposed to be sore tonight.
He has ribs of steel.
-
okay, genuine question, even if it sounds stupid to you. What is the rule/custom with regard to "blocking a base" the way a catcher blocks the plate? not allowed, or just not done as courtesy?
It has never really occurred to me before, but seems like it would be pretty useful on steals.

You obviously have never faced spikes.
-
JD: Maybe we can get the President to commute his (Qualls) sentence
-
Clank avoids a bad throw by not throwing it.
-
THAT is the Chad Qualls we've all been looking for. He was not fucking joking around tonight. That slider was working.
-
You obviously have never faced spikes.
no, i haven't. at least not metal spikes. point taken.
-
I take it they've yet to rule on his appeal?
-
Ran up the Hill, lost the ball, pitched a base camp, strapped on the crampons and went up the chimney on the west face. Unbelievable. If nothing else the guy is an athlete.
-
JD: Maybe we can get the President to commute his (Qualls) sentence
That was classic.
-
I take it they've yet to rule on his appeal?
The hearing is Friday.
-
If nothing else the guy is an athlete.
His joints didn't get screwed in as tight as most people's, but he works with it.
-
no, i haven't. at least not metal spikes. point taken.
I have scars. Catchers have shin guards, middle infielders do not. Non-contact sport my ass...

Not allowed to block the base without the ball. If he's got the ball, well fuck it. I'm not going feet first into an armored up catcher.
-
In 7 years I remember one ball (Sexson's) hitting the pole in center and then that one (almost) last inning. Since the pole is in play, is a deflection off the pole that is caught before it hits the ground an out? I could probably find this on the Astros website, but I figure I'll be lazy and somebody will answer it for me here.
-
Since the pole is in play, is a deflection off the pole that is caught before it hits the ground an out?
I'm gonna say probably not, but I am equally lazy.
-
You cant catch a ball for an out off the scoreboard in left, so I'm going to assume the same rule would apply to the flag pole.
-
Not that it's at all relevent, if a batted ball hits the lower catwalk ring at Tropicana Field and is caught before it hit's the ground, it is an out.
-
Ball hits flagpole and leaves field - HOME RUN.
Ball remains on field - IN PLAY.
Ball hits flag pole, bounces on ground and then over fence - TWO BASES.

Doesn't really answer the question. (The quote doesn't, I didn't investigate the link)
"In play" doesn't mean a catch before it hits the ground is an out.
-

I took 'in play' to mean not an out. Like if it hits the roof in fair ground also 'in play'.
-

Like what Lurch said.
-
I took 'in play' to mean not an out. Like if it hits the roof in fair ground also 'in play'.
That's how I interpret it as well. So, the answer to the original question is "no."
-
Here are the ground rules for all MLB stadiums: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/ground_rules.jsp
As mentioned above, Tropicana field does spell out rules for balls hitting the roof and getting caught (out). Still unsure about MMPUS flagpole catches though. I would think it's an out.
Edit: Geez, I can't type. I meant NOT an out.
-
Like what Lurch said.
Yeah, but he didn't have an authoritative source. So suck it.
-
I emailed Lucas... let him figure it out
-
Why take Qualls out?
-
Yeah, but he didn't have an authoritative source. So suck it.
"Check out the big link on homer."

Don't be a hater.

Ok, I'm risking beating this meaningless question into the ground, but if it hits the roof in fair ground and is caught, isn't that an out? If so, wouldn't a pole rebound be an out too?
Nah, fuck it, don't answer that. Let's just wait until it happens in 2021 and see what the ruling is.
-
Don't be a hater.
Do you know why they call it a Royale with cheese?

Dumbass Ruiz.

Fantastically dumb baserunning by Ruiz.

The SeligTron Automated Robotic Umpiring Unit will know what to do.

All I could think was, either he's an idiot or he thinks Berkman is an idiot. Then, I thought, well....

Call it a tie?

Do you know why they call it a Royale with cheese?
Because of the metric system?

The Phils remind me a lot of the Astros

I think the pole touching the ground has something to do with it. Mr. Lurch

Competitively mediocre?
-
Pence!! with the base-knock over Rollins' glove, heads up baserunning by Bidge to go first to third.
Can't ask for a better opportunity than this.
-
If Rollins had reeled that in, Biggio was fucking dead meat.
-
Competitively mediocre?
Frustratingly good?
-
last night in the gz, there was a question about the glass panes that make up the wall in the outfield...
i did some digging, and got this info:
each glass pane weighs 480 pounds and is 5 feet x 12 feet. each pane is 3 layers thick - the inner and outer layers are glass, the middle layer is laminate.
i know this doesn't address the flagpole debate, but i like to tie up loose ends when i can.
-
Do you know why they call it a Royale with cheese?
On a business trip in Boston many years ago I went through a McDonalds drive thru. Asked for a reciept, but they couldnt get one from the register for some reason. No problem, the young lady simply wrote it out on a napkin for me (at this point, I could care less about the $5 expense, but the situation was amusing). She seriously wrote "Qwartor Pounder" on a napkin and handed it to me. Yeah, I turned it in.

So they're essentially windshield glass. Good to know. If a hurricane blows through during some September series, we'll be safe.
-
Oh my! What a call!
We really lucked out on that.
-
WAY TO GO LANCE!
-
No fucking way he was safe, but that was awesome.
-
nice freaking hustle!!!!
-
Lee!
-
He was fucking out.
But i'll take it.
-
Carlos busted his ass down the line on that play. He looked out, but what the hell.
-
I was gonna say, no way Lee's fat ass is safe on that. I'll take the call though.
-
generous call, and i love it
-
Lee sure spun the wheels on that one.
-
Carlos busted his ass down the line on that play. He looked out, but what the hell.
No lack of hustle there. Gave the team an opportunity by busting his ass. Good stuff.
-
If Alfonseca gives someone the middle finger, which one is it?

Maybe he has to use both?

" Alfonseca was born with six fingers and toes on each hand and foot, an oddity that led his teammates to nickname him "Pulpo" -- Spanish for octopus."

If Alfonseca gives someone the middle finger, which one is it?
Those jokes never get old. Everytime I see him pitch I find myself staring at his pitching hand and trying to count them.

Pulpo? That's one of the great nicknames of all time.

Lance had enough pressure that Utley couldn't step into the throw.
-
It's amazing to think that a professional who makes a minimum of $350k a year and who gets a month off during a six-month working year could fuck up such a simple call. It was not particularly close.
The quality of umpiring really seems to be deteriorating quickly.
-

JD called that one. Said Lance better go in hard on a soft grounder to the left side.

I think it's more that the quality of broadcasts and replays has improved.
-
comeon Mac, keep it close.
-
quick set up, quick throw from Pence.
-
Hunter did a better job setting up for that throw, and then nailed the cutoff man.
-
I think it's more that the quality of broadcasts and replays has improved.
I'm sure that's partially the case. But when an outstanding talent such as CB Bucknor rises methodically through the ranks of the minor league system and gets duly rewarded with a MLB job you have to know that something is seriously fucked up.
-
quick set up, quick throw from Pence.
fancy footwork too.
why did he stop using two hands when he catches the ball?

I dunno, I should probably keep my mouth shut but I tend to take the same attitute towards umps as I do players. They are going to fuck up on a regular basis. As long as they hustle, are in position to make the call/play, and (in the case of umps) don't try to enourage confrontation and make the game about them, I'll give 'em a great deal of slack.
Especially when they bail out the 'Stros and keep a game alive.
I don't have an answer to the CB Bucknor/Angel Hernandez question(s), though.
-
phucking steel ribs strikes again.
-
Hunter did a better job setting up for that throw, and then nailed the cutoff man.
He's done that a few times tonight with a runner on second and no outs. His throws each time have been strong, and on the right line to hit third on a hop but low enough for the cutoff guy to grab it at head level.
-
fancy footwork too.
why did he stop using two hands when he catches the ball?
Dont know, but he did get the ball towards the cutoff quick. Obviously he is aware of his limitations and is trying to compensate.
-
phucking steel ribs strikes again.
Shit. I thought it was a cup check at first.

I'm with you. As long as they do what they can and keep their ego out of it I'm OK with the occasional missed call. I just don't understand how someone who has such a huge amount of training can fuck up a call like we just saw. I mean, it was not close. Close, OK. Not close, I don't get it.

He was really starting to piss Biggio off too.
-
Nice job Bork.
Make him a winner.
-
I don't think that was the call.
I am not sure either, but its the only explanation I could come up with.
-
I don't think that was the call.
They usually make some sort of hand motion for that call.

Have you ever umpired? I phucked up several calls in my time, knowing I missed it, but you CANNOT change your call. They are human.
-

Likewise. Mistakes happen. It's part of the game, for better or for worse. This time? For better.
ETA: Except for I fucked up the calls, I didn't phuck them up.
-
Have you ever umpired? I phucked up several calls in my time, knowing I missed it, but you CANNOT change your call. They are human.
did you ever make up for it later in the game?

Little fucker went in spikes high.

FWIW, I also thought it was clear that Lee was out at first, and on close calls my success rate is about 50:50.
-
did you ever make up for it later in the game?
In a sense, yes. I felt somewhat guilty. The next close play went in their favor.
-
did you ever make up for it later in the game?
Not really consciously, but on close ones it can't escape the back of your mind. However, you always try to make the right call every time. It might not work out that way, but you don't keep a ledger in your head.
-
Have you ever umpired? I phucked up several calls in my time, knowing I missed it, but you CANNOT change your call. They are human.
My own personal theory is that the sight of big boy lee coming at you with any sort of speed is scary enough to distract even the largest of umpires.
-
Missed most of the game--How did Oswalt look?
-

Needless to say, I was much better arguing with umps instead of portraying one.
-
Missed most of the game--How did Oswalt look?
Like he does. Good for the most part, in and out with the control of the big curve. Couldn't avoid The Oswalt Inning after the good guys dropped a 3 spot.
-
Missed most of the game--How did Oswalt look?
So-so. Couldn't hold a 3-1 lead. Next inning the Phillies tied it. Up in the zone, 10 hits allowed. 4 earnies.
-
Thanks.
-
Have you ever umpired?
Yes, and I missed calls, too. But I wasn't the the world's highest paid professional in my given field fucking up a routine call.
Listen, I'm happy the call worked out to the Astros' benefit, but I despair for the level of umpiring we've seen over the last five years or so. It is bad and getting worse.
-
Needless to say, I was much better arguing with umps instead of portraying one.
I feel the same way writing judicial opinions. It's a lot easier to write on one side's behalf than to weigh everything, do your own research, and then make the right call.
-
Needless to say, I was much better arguing with umps instead of portraying one.
wow - you and bench posted your replies to my question at the exact same time - would you call that yin yang?

Balls and strikes is what I have most problems with several of the current umpires.
-

I don't like when they miss calls on slides that avoid the tag. Devalues an important and exciting part of the game.

Ausmus' first at bat was mind-boggling.
-
wow - you and bench posted your replies to my question at the exact same time - would you call that yin yang?
Bullshit. I nosed him out!
There. I called it.
-
Missed most of the game--How did Oswalt look?
On three different occasions he gave up runs on 2-out doubles. I'm sure it's selective memory, but he doesn't seem to close the deal as effectively as he used to. FWIW, two of those doubles probably would have been caught by a more proficient right fielder.
-
C'mon Bidge, feast on the lefty.

Well, it's not like the phrase "kill the umpire!" was just coined. And infielders still boot routine grounders. You may be right--the umpiring may actually be getting worse--but until the SeligTron is unleashed after the Great Robot Rebellion of 2020, we're stuck with what we have.

On three different occasions he gave up runs on 2-out doubles. I'm sure it's selective memory, but he doesn't seem to close the deal as effectively as he used to. FWIW, two of those doubles probably would have been caught by a more proficient right fielder.
Its the missing hook.
-
omigod!!!
peeennnnnnnnccccceeeeee!!!!!
-
Its the missing hook.
Yep. It hasn't been there for him for well over a month now.
-
omigod!!!
peeennnnnnnnccccceeeeee!!!!!
Shit. For a while there you had me thinking that I had forgotten I paused it a while back.
-

I don't buy this at all. Better personnel and better training would result in a better result for the game. And comparing an infielder to an umpire is apples and orangutans.
-
I don't like when they miss calls on slides that avoid the tag. Devalues an important and exciting part of the game.
speaking of this, i only got to see it once, but i thought Ruiz might have gotten in under Ausmus' tag.
-
sorry...it's the tylenol pm talking
-
FUCK, FUCK, FUCK!!!
-
Carlo'Lee is going to win this game. Hell yeah.
-
speaking of this, i only got to see it once, but i thought Ruiz might have gotten in under Ausmus' tag.
I agree, I thought his feet may have been on the plate as Ausmus gave him a cup check.
-
speaking of this, i only got to see it once, but i thought Ruiz might have gotten in under Ausmus' tag.
Ausmus didn't exactly go out and get him.
-
speaking of this, i only got to see it once, but i thought Ruiz might have gotten in under Ausmus' tag.
I thought the same thing. But the throw was there so far in advance of the tag that there was no way he was going to be called safe. And, on a technical point, the slide didn't try to avoid the tag, so Frobie has no standing to bring a complaint (channeling my inner Roberts court voice).
ETA: My reading comprehension skills are weak. Maybe that was homer, not Frobie.
-
Phillies carry three catchers, and Ruiz the last of the bunch just came up lame. Yes I'm chuckling. Sorry BBGs, I couldn't help it.

This could get pretty interesting.

uggh, too much legal jargon for a guy taking a break from bar exam studying tonight
-
Nice job Bork.
Now make him a winner.
(It's like deja vu all over again)
-

For what it's worth, if a judge says that you have 17 days to take that exam, I'd double check the statute and calander if I were you.
(More Roberts channelling)
-
Love the looks of that ERA on Durbin.
-
"The league hits .500 against him..."
Now that's what you like to hear when the opponent brings in a new pitcher.
-
Nice job Bork.
Now make him a winner.

Bench - PM

I wish Alkie were here tonight.

Nice hit Burke, a shot up the middle.

Not that I don't believe in Luke, but what's the bench/pen situation?
-

Mud grips. You know, for traction on his ranch.
-
Not that I don't believe in Luke, but what's the bench/pen situation?
Radio says just Munson on the bench.
-
Radio says just Munson on the bench.
Gameday agrees.
-
Not that I don't believe in Luke, but what's the bench/pen situation?
Munson
Moehler and Albers

Moehler and ??
JimR, if he gets there fast.
-
Albers
Ah yes, Albers. It takes me a while to digest roster moves.
-
Albers
Tanks

My neighbors went to the game tonight.
They have 2 kids, approx. 3 and 1.5 years old.
They do not seem to have come home yet.
I'm impressed.
-
JD said Sampson earlier, if need be.
They'd probably use Woody to hit if necessary too, or Jennings.
-

I'm impressed.
Either that, or they came home a while back and have passed out from exhaustion.
-
Who was the big boy catcher that used to sit on his ass with the leg extended when no one was on base?

Holiday tomorrow, waiting for the fireworks?

Tony Pena.

Fireworks after the game. It may actually be the Fourth of July before it happens.
-
Tony Pena.
He couldn't have done that.
-
Tony Pena.
And befor that, Manny Sanguillen for the Pyroots.

Be careful that you don't trip that motion-sensing light they have in the driveway.
-
And befor that, Manny Sanguillen for the Pyroots.
Bourne woulda reached on him too.
I thought there was another guy...
-
That was a pretty damn good inning for Albers.
-
Hell of a change up from Albers.
-
Nice work Albers, and he sure needs a W.
-
Now we know why Pence!!! couldnt walk a straight line for the officer...
-
Let's try this:
Nice job Albers.
Now make him a winner.

Tony Pena.
Irrelevant factoid: in my Strat-O-Matic replay of the 1996 Indians and Astros seasons, Tony Peña has 169 ABs and zero extra-base hits.
Real life: .195/.235/.236
Strat: .148/.196/.148
Talk about offensive futility.

15 LOB tonight

Okay so, spill the Biggio/Bagwell numbers.
-
I've decided I hate this fucker.
-
I've decided I hate this fucker.
No shit. He's definitely moving into piss-ant status.
-
Victorino is taking pieces out of Biggio tonight.
-
I've decided I hate this fucker.
4 SB/ 3 CS last year.
27/2 this year. I hate him too.
-
Okay so, spill the Biggio/Bagwell numbers.
I'm also curious to see this, though I only have a rudimentary understanding of Strat-o-matic.
-
Okay so, spill the Biggio/Bagwell numbers.
Actually, it's funny you should mention this as I planned this "project" as a tribute to Bagwell after he announced his retirement. Probably his second-best season after 1994. I've said this many times before, but I am not a life-long Astros fan and missed most of the glory days of Bagwell and Biggio.
That said, here are the numbers:
Bagwell: .315/.451(!)/.570 (real life), .300/.425/.562 (Strat)
Biggio: .288/.386/.415 (real life), .273/.351/.434 (Strat)
The Astros' record is currently 58-68. I don't think it's a coincidence that they are doing worse than they acutally did when Bagwell and Biggio are playing (slightly) below their historical performaces.
The NL Central race still looks interesting, though (it's 8/22):
Cards 67 59 --
Cubs 65 60 1.5
Reds 62 62 4
Roots 63 63 4
Stros 58 68 9
-
IBB Ruiz? I think so.
-
No shit. He's definitely moving into piss-ant status.
Victorino, Tulowitzki. New little Astro Killahs popping up everywhere, like toadstools in a well-shat pasture.
-
IBB Ruiz? I think so.
Guess not.
-
Guess not.
Guess again.
-
Guess not.
Guess so. Pitched around him to see if he would chase, then stood up at 3-0.
Moyer better not fuck us here.
-
Moyer is a bitch.
-
Moyer is a bitch.
I'll be shocked if he swings.
-
Moyer is a bitch.
He played the part of the 2nd out well.
-
Fucking huge job by Albers there. Love it.
-
Way to get there Albers, nice job.
-
Wow. Trying to give me a heart attack here. And I'm out of beer.
-
Treat of a game tonight, regardless

Wow. Trying to give me a heart attack here. And I'm out of beer.
I stopped drinking hours ago, but am fixing to resume at this rate.

This has happened to you before. You seem to be a poor planner.
-

I have to get up at 4:45 and get to work tomorrow.
-
Wow. Trying to give me a heart attack here. And I'm out of beer.
Then switch to bourbon. You do have a Strategic Bourbon Reserve... right?!
Love games like this. Especially when I don't have to get up and go to work the next morning.

I have to work tomorrow, but not at that ungodly hour.

HUNTER PENCE!!!!!!

PENCE!!!! Holy Shit!!!
-
PENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
FUCKIN HUGE.
-
PENCE!!! I've got a big glass of emergency bourbon just for you!
-
FUCK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Of course, he missed the foul pole, so everyone goes home hungry.
-
Meh. He should have won more chicken sammiches for everyone. (D'oh--JaneDoe beat me to it!)
Great job, GZers. Always a pleasure.
-
fucking rookie of the year...
-
Six shutout innings from the bully tonight. Bravo.
-
Looks like I came home from Houston a couple of days too soon. What an amazing homestand.

Wife during postgame interview:
"Hey, he blinked!"

Which is all PENCE!! talked about during his player of the game interview. Man, he's a likable kid, just a great attitude.
-
I stopped drinking hours ago, but am fixing to resume at this rate.
I got home from the watching the game at Crown and Anchor and am drunk and happy. My timing was stellar. Turned on the TV right as Thunderpants was stepping into the box.
-
Wife during postgame interview:
"Hey, he blinked!"
I said the same thing. I saw him do it twice.
-
and did you see him put his head down and haul ass around the bases and then deflect all praise to the bullpen and others? nice.

Biggio's teaching the kid right.
-

The kid is working hard, having fun, and improving his game every day.
He even knew to toss his helmet before reaching the mob at home plate.
-
Biggio's teaching the kid right.
And if you saw his mom's answer to Alkie's GZ inquiry a few nights ago, you'd know it started long before he ever met Bidge.

Just thinking out loud: I can't believe that Hunter Pence's mom's title is "disappointing rookie". Shouldn't she be, like, "Hunter Pence's Mom!!!" or something? (Winky would go here.)
Missed that exchange; thanks for the link.

Our new software doesn't give us the same opportunity to change the title on individuals, just in member groups. And it's tied to number of post. I missed being able to ascribe certain titles to folks, for the very reason you mentioned. Fredia had the title "one of a kind" and it was perfect.
No more.
(BTW - what Mrs. Pence said is correct, Pence projects as a corner outfielder... Houston will need a CFer sometime soon, perhaps as soon as next year. It is vital to the defensive strategy for playing at Minute Maid. So is having a solid shortstop).

Make a group, change the title. Make her the only member.
ETA: Oops, tied to number of posts. NM.

With that last atbat homer Pence now has enough atbats to be among the league leaders in hitting. He is now officially 2nd at .345. His catch on the hill even made web gems.

He's definitely a class act.

MLB.com hasn't updated the league leaders yet, but his .590 slugging percentage is the fifth-best in baseball behind Arod, Barroid, Ordonez, and Fielder. Good job, rook.

In the NL, he is #2 in batting average, #3 in slugging, tied for #5 in triples, #8 in OPS and tied for #11 in doubles.
Qualified leaders (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/stats/bycategory?cat=Batting&conference=NL&year=season_2007&qualified=1&sort=22)

for me, the best thing about him is his willingness and ability to hit the ball hard to the right side. he is in such a zone right now, and i hope he never wakes up.
