i used to live in garden grove-- chapman and seacrest, about 3 miles down from the crystal cathedral.  i used to play basketball at faylane park with some white boyz who were always smokin' shwag weed and talkin' like black boyz.

We took this trip to Garden Grove.  Smelled like Lou-dog inside the van.  Oh yeah.

DK was from Garden Grove.

Got lost there once looking for a place to eat.

Top 1:  Biggio whiffs on 3 pitches (2 sliders).  Colon busting PENCE!! inside and gets ahead 0-2, then goes away and fills it up, close pitch (away) called ball 4.  Berkman bounces one past Kendrick at 2nd, Pence goes 1st to 3rd.  Payback?  Lee pops up to 1B after JD and Brownie bank the sac fly before it happens.  Berkman steals 2nd without a throw as they were worried about Pence coming home.  Loretta whiffs on a slurve.  0-0.

Bot 1:  Hoggle grounds past an unmoved Berkman on the second pitch.  Here we go again.  Figgins falls behind 1-2, fouling some pitches off, strikes out on a hit and run.  Hoggle safe at 2nd as Loretta couldn't handle the throw down, but didn't get any further.  Cabrera singles (too) solidly to LF, 1st & 3rd.  Vlad sends PENCE!! all the way to, and into, the wall.  Sac fly on Pence's face plant, 2 down.  Matthews hits LAA patented butcher chop, but foul.  Cabrera dancing off 1st, sets sail as Matthews whiffs.  1-0 Anhills.

Top 2:  Lamb gets ahead early, then sends a lazy fly to RF.  Scott falls behind early, then whiffs.  Tubby Colon still has some zip in his arm.  Munson grounds weakly to 3rd.  1-0 Anhills.

Title: Re: Houston at Garden Grove - Juneteenth, 2007
Post by: Limey on June 19, 2007, 09:38:10 pm
Bot 2:  Iron Man Kendrick (playing both ways) smokes one to the wall in RF, cruises into 2nd.  Hillenbrand sneaks one under Lamb's glove at 3rd - should be an error - 1st & 3rd, no out, no error.  Quinlan falls behind, tries the LAA chop (I'm convinced now that they coach this thing) but it goes foul, then serves up a DP but Loretta gives it a booting that would make an Australian proud.  1st & 2nd, 0 out, 2-0 Anhills, 2 errors in the inning.  Molina broken bat to Berkman, tries for a 3-6-3 DP but Molina beats the relay to 1st, Hillenbrand to 3rd, 1 down.  Hoggle sac fly, 3-0 Anhills (all sac flies, right?).  Even Molina is trying to steal, three times, WTF?  Figgins keeps fouling, then eventually whiffs.  3-0 Anhills.

My 3 criteria for calling something a "sport"
1) Requires practice to get better at it
2) Has a defined goal
3) Has an active defense trying to keep you from accomplishing that goal

So far, this game just barely counts as "sport."

Top 3:  OP goes up the middle for a single.  Biggio lays off an early slider, then hammers one to Matthews, 1 down.  Wallbanger Pence belts one up the middle, 1st & 2nd for Twinkie.  Colon hitting the high 90's on the gun.  Tinkie Winkie pops up to deep short, 2 down.  Lee nonchalantly homers over straight away center.  TIED!  Stand up double for Stan.  Clank goes 3-0, walks.  How's this for turnabout:  AL team chipping away for runs, NL team going for big innings?!!  Scott can o' corn to RF.  3-3.

I had the Astros in the PIP, UC-Irvine/ASU on the big picture, and then the TIVO pops up the message that it will begin recording The Daily Show in 2 minutes. Eeek! What will get pre-empted?  And within 30 seconds of one another, Carlos hits the jack, and UCI gets a bases-loaded, 1-out single through the right side to end that game. Back down to two tuners. Whew.

20 years ago (or so) the Tigers tried a grand experiment: they fielded a team that couldn't really defend against a T-ball team, but could mash the hell out of the ball. It was an interesting experiment, and for a while they were successful, in that they had more wins than losses. But eventually they succumbed to the reality that defense is actually important.

The Astros are reprising half of that experiment, just to make sure that the laws of physics haven't changed in the interim.

Top4:  Munson goes full, fouls a couple, walks.  OP bounces one over the RF wall.  Once again the ground rule prevents an Astros run.  2nd & 3rd, 0 out.  Welcome back Y2K, I missed ya!  Biggio gets a knock off the top of Kendricks glove, Munson scores, OP to 3rd (had to wait).  2,991.  Pence gets down 0-2, then grounds to 3rd.  OP takes off on contact and stays alive long enough for Bidge and Pence to move up.  1 down, not 2, 2nd & 3rd for Lance.  Twinks falls behind 0-2, then takes one off the foot.  Loaded potato for Lee.  Darren Oliver warming up for the Cherubs.  Sac fly, while all move up on the throw.  TIED, 2nd & 3rd for Loretta.  Stan falls behind 1-2, pops up to shallow RF.

It's weird. The Angels seem to be frustrating as hell to play against... but you have to figure they'd be frustrating as hell to be a fan of when things aren't going perfectly. With virtually no power in the lineup, their little dinks have to keep falling in or they'll just strand a bunch of runners.

It makes me feel good to pretend that that'll happen for a significant chunk of time this year.

I'm sorry, are Gleek and I alone here?  Honest question, do you enjoy watching baseball in the double digits?  Teams needing 10+ to win a game?

You're the one with the EI package. I only watch NL. Except for this interleague crap.

We almost NEVER watch AL baseball, unless there's a great pitcher I want to see or a no-hitter going on.

It bores me to tears.  This slug-fest-last-team-to-score-late-wins lacks any of what makes baseball fun for me.  I think it's why I hate college ball too.

Nothing better than a 1-0 pitcher's duel with sparkling defense.  BUT--as anemic as our offense has been, I refuse to complain about high scoring games.

That's like being the meanest guy on Death Row.
Just who on this team can run?
Burke is fairly quick.
PENCE! can move pretty well.
AE has some speed... or at least he did before he grew a couple of extra ankle joints,
And...?

The DH to me is just so half-assed.

Why stop there?  Why not just give runs for reaching third?  Or half-runs for reaching 2nd?  Hey, how about letting the same 3 hitters hit every inning?

It's just half-assed.  It's lazy.

Bot 6:  Quinlan the unimpressive geta a jammed-shot bloop into LCF.  Angels regain their game.  Molina GIDPs that takes a day to turn, but Molina is glacial down the line and is nipped at 1st.  Hoggle bunts one that hugs the line and stays fair.  Hoggle steals 2nd.  Figgins walks.  Jennings to the showers.  White comes in and quickly induces a grounder to 2nd from Cabrera.  7-5 Astros.

Top 7:  Moseley on for Colon.  Lamb greets him with a single.  Moseley then pings one off Molina and Lamb moves up.  3-2 to Burke, who then hits a tailor made GIDP but Lamb is at 2nd, now over to 3rd.  1 out.  Molina coninues to struggle with Moseley's dirt-balls (NTTAWWT).  Munson one-hops the CF wall for a double.  8-5 Astros.  OP singles into LF, Manso sends Munson, who scores only because Figgins cuts the throw and nails OP at 2nd.  2 out, 9-5 Astros.  Bidge Ks to end it (saving the hits for the homestand, no doubt).  9-5 Astros.

Duh. Optimus Prime was a train...

Actually, Optimus Prime was a Mack truck.  Astrotrain had 3 forms, one of which was a locomotive in the old school (like the 50's, not Pedophile Jack) style.

I have a feeling I should not have revealed my knowledge of the Transformers.

He's been hurt for part of the year and awful on the other part.  The other half is mental... I think.  But he really has no velocity and awful location on his pitches.  He looks done to me.
