[A]pparently, there was no other interest in me around the league. That's a pretty good wakeup call right there.

Lane gets it - does management?

There's been talk about Lidge and Burke being showcased in preparation for a trade.  I don't think that's going to happen, but Lane complained that he thought he was doing ok when he got regular work.  Lane will start in Round Rock so maybe he'll be able to create some interest.  Purpura said on his Sunday interview with Milo that teams are distracted by the draft and so it's been difficult to get them to focus on trades.

If he thought he was doing OK, that might be part of the problem.

What he said was,

"I feel like I was on track out of Spring Training the first two weeks, when I was playing. I felt like I was driving the ball and producing. But a couple lefties don't show up in a few series, and you don't play. The league's pretty tough. It's tough for a lot of guys playing every day. Not playing every day, it can be even tougher."

Yes, and Houston's own braintrust is as busy as well.  The decision was made sometime last week that Munson and Burke would be back up with the big club.  It was just a matter of Purpura finding the right time to do so.

Therein lies the problem.  Jason Lane still thinks of himself as a starter.  No problem with that, but just like Russ Johnson before him, if he doesn't want to be a right handed bat off the bench late in the game, then his mindset will be all wrong for the job.  The fear sometimes for these guys is that they'll do an excellent job coming off the bench and thus never make it back to being a starter.

In essence, I would be shocked if Lane ever plays for the Houston Astros (barring injury of course) again.  I expect him to clock some PT in Round Rock and be packaged in a deal at the trading deadline.  Maybe as the proverbial PTBNL.  He wants to start but there is no such job for him here doing that.

He wants to start but there is no such job for him anywhere in the majors doing that.

FIFY.

Considering management's handling of players like Lane, you would be shocked to see him back in Houston?

I'll be shocked if he's not one of the Houston Astros' 2008 outfielders coming out of spring training, regardless of the fact that his career BA will likely be .175 at that point in time.

Yes.  He wants to start, not come off the bench and he's young enough to kick start his career again.  But not in Houston, not with Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence pretty much putting a strangle hold on two of the jobs.  The other is debateable, but Lane pretty much worked his way out of the job for three years now.

This has something to do with Brad Lidge somehow, doesn't it? :)

Eggszactly.  And a reason why most of the guys who have jobs as "come off the bench" guys are veteran and not young guys like Russ Johnson or Jason Lane.  The attitude is different from veteran guys.  Jack Howell was a great example of the type of guy you want to hire for the job.  Charlie Hayes?  Ahum... no.

i would suggest also that these more positive quotes are the result of being interviewed by a competent journalist (footer), instead of someone who has an agenda to exploit a situation in order to get controversial quotes.

You make a good point. I like this point very much.

I don't know.  Is Brad Lidge still Houston's closer, Noe?

No.  But I was wondering when you'd get around to him.

Well, I'm glad you finally got around to conceding that.

Brad Lidge has pitched very well in his new role, which pleases me greatly, despite Jim's belief that I've got it in for Lidge.  It's unfortunate it, again, took management so long to realize that a change needed to be made.

Huh?  You asked me a factual question and I answered.  Are you actually asking me if Lidge *should* be the closer?  That is a different question.  And my answer would be the same one I posted previously this morning.   Go look in the Wheeler/Lidge thread to make sure.  If you're too lazy to go look, then here is the short answer: Lidge should get some save opportunities soon.

Actually, you were the one who claimed you had it in for Lidge.  No one needed to put that on you, that was something you readily admitted and were very proud of.  Backing down from that now?
