So with the demotion of Lane and Rick White getting put on the DL for a pinch nerve, the bench has been effectively altered. Was it necessary? Yes, yes it was. Called up were Eric Munson and Chris Burke. Munson for his bat and Burke for his, ahum... well... let me get back to that later.
Typically, you make up your bench with this sort of thinking in mind:
1. Need a pinch hitting specialist, someone who could possibly come off the bench and spark a rally with a hit, someone who makes good contact. Candidate: Orlando Palmiero. Typically you want to use this sort of guy in the earlier innings and to start said inning. Say a seventh inning or so.
2. Need a left handed or right handed bat who can really hit. This creates a matchup problem for an opposing manager if you have a left handed bat who can hit. Candidate: Mike Lamb, Eric Munson or Mark Loretta. You use this guy any chance you get, but really look for those key times you can put him in there for the difference in a win and a loss late in a game.
3. Backup catcher, defensive specialist, you want to keep this guy in reserve most of the time. Candidate: Humberto Quintero.
4. Speed guy, pinch runner, defensive specialist, occasional start, but mostly a guy who can help you late in a game if you're wanting to hold on to a lead. Candidate: Chris Burke.
5. Right handed power hitter. This is the guy who can provide punch from the right side if needed. Candidate: ?
It's really up to Phil Garner to figure out how he'll use his bench or even who he'll consider his bench guys. I know Munson is here to play and will get some playing time to prove he can help this punchless middle of the lineup get going. I don't anticipate this being a full time gig for Munson, Ausmus will play for three starters: Oswalt, Jennings and Williams. So Munson is a part time player, so I consider him a bench help. So what to do with the three headed monster at third (Lamb/Loretta/Ensberg)? Well, truth be told Ensberg would be a horrible right handed bench hitter. He's just not aggressive enough off the bench. Although he can be as frustrating with the lack of aggressiveness as a starter, he has exhibited a newfound desire to swing the bat when he's in the lineup. But I am of the opinion that Mark Loretta is a much better player right now and if Munson gets the PT, so does Loretta in my book. So by default, Ensberg may of just inherited Jason Lane's job.
Congratulations Mo, enjoy the view from the bench.

I don't have a lot of faith in the way Garner uses his guys off the bench but for the life of me, I can't see any bit of reasoning that values Chris Burke as a better bench option then Eric Bruntlett. Bruntlett is a
much better hitter vs LHP, more versatile, better defensively at every position except maybe 2B, and IMO a better base runner. Add the fact that he has been very hot at the plate recently and bringing up the disgruntled Burke seems silly.

so what happens when the great burke experiment fails once again. how many chances does one ball player get with this team
-
I have nothing but my own suspicions to base this on, but I believe that Bruntlett is being made an example of for his well, blasting an unnamed general manager for more or less lying to him.
And, by the way, whoever thought of putting Jennifer Love Hewitt in a bra commercial...effing genius.

No kidding. Some random tv network could give her her own hour long show, with her doing nothing but laundry, chores and prancing around the house in her bra and lingerie. No dialagoue, whatsoever, just a little music, here and there. The show would be an epic success.

You just became my favorite contributor.

So if they just showed 3 hours of JLH laundry commercials instead of 2007 Houston Astros baseball, you'd be happier?
I'm not saying you shouldn't be.
By the way, I just watched Leaving Las Vegas. Sure, I'm depressed and thinking about killing myself, but at least there will be Shueboobs in my eternal dreams.

If the Shueboobs didn't make it onto the proposed television channel a couple of weeks ago, they needed to.
-
Good things should be shared. It's just a little more fun than thinking about a sweating Purp.
Bouncing JLH cleavage is about as opposite of 2007 Astro baseball as possible. I'm not sure I could compare the two at all, but an hour of it on tv would be just fine.

I think she only made it in at the end. LLV should definitely be in the rotation.
And yes... "bouncing JLH cleavage : 2007 Astros baseball" is part of some SAT question.

I know Noe was saying something earlier in this thread... just can't remember what it was anymore....

I think what Noe was trying to say is that Jennifer Love Hewitt cans be the RH power hitter of the bench in crucial pinch tit situations, allowing her to rack up RBIs.

That is on Tim Purpura, not Phil Garner.

Must not hit spilt topic button. Must. Keep. Moving.

And Burke's whining about not being given a fair shot gets forgiven? Bruntlett should have been brought up to the club, not Burke.

Amen.
ETA: If they're planning on "showcasing" Burke, I can see it. But from everything we know, Purp would sooner trade his own child than to take a call on Burke.

Whining is different than calling someone a liar. Just saying.

I have no doubt that as long as Purpura is GM, Burke will remain an Astro.

Yeah...

Yeah...
who called whom a liar about what?

Bruntlett implied that Purpura and Garner lied to him about his role on the team. That was when Houston turned around and acquired Mark Loretta soon after talking to Bruntlett. He was furious.
