Title: Wandy is in
Post by: pravata on March 21, 2007, 01:01:46 pm
the fifth is still under consideration ... it's "a four-man race among young righthanders Matt Albers, Fernando Nieve and Chris Sampson and veteran righthander Brian Moehler. ...Garner said. "They all throw the ball pretty good. I feel pretty comfortable whatever we choose."

Albers, 24, is greener than Sampson. Called up last year from Class AA Corpus Christi, he went 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in four games (two starts), but the Astros rave about his stuff.

"If I go to (Class AAA) Round Rock, it's not the end of the world," said Albers, who was a starter in the minors. "Obviously, I want to make the team, but I'm not too worried about it. You can't really think about that. You have to go out there and throw the ball."

Was I the only one amused to hear a 24-year-old say this?

Tell that to  your good buddy Richard Justice. From his article today: "As for the rotation, Wandy Rodriguez has failed to take advantage of his opportunity and probably has been passed by Fernando Nieve, Chris Sampson and Matt Albers in the competition for the fourth and fifth spots."

Why does he even bother going to Kissimmee?

Notice McTaggert is speaking to Garner.  Pinwheel is interviewing Polly Prissy Pants.  I like the coy use of the word "probably", more tea Polly?

Actually, he is trying to decipher what Garner is really saying...

Quote:

I'm not sure Wandy Rodriguez has locked up the fourth spot in the rotation. That's what Phil Garner is saying publicly, but Rodriguez hasn't pitched well enough to have assured himself of anything. Even if the Astros open the season with him pitching fourth, he won't be there long if he doesn't pick it up.

He also leaves himself a nice out for an I told you so later on...

Exactly.  He's right either way.   Or at least he will think he is.

He's wrong on this Rockets tidbit in his next section, though:

"With 14 games remaining, they're two losses behind Utah in the race for the Western Conference's fourth seed. "

Actually, the Rockets can only get the fourth seed if they finish behind all 3 Western Conference division leaders and finish ahead of San Antonio.

The Rockets, if they pass Utah, will still be the 5 seed if they finish behind San Antonio.  They'll have home court over the 4 seed, but they'll still be the 5 seed.

Basic stuff.

Valpo-

you are technically correct as to the Rockets situation, but it is splitting hairs.  A five seed with homecourt advantage is basically the same as a four seed, especially since there is virtually no chance Houston and Utah won't get it on in the first round. With all pinwheel's mistakes to choose from this is a very minor one. I would assume he knows this and is just speaking in shorthand referring to getting the 4 seed.

Who knows though.

I actually found his article in the paper this AM to be solid- considering the expectations I have from him.

Not the one where he writes his opinion that Wandy Rodriguez has been surpassed by the other starters for the 4th spot even while Mctaggert is reporting Garner saying that WRodriguez is the 4th and the 5th is the only spot in contention?

"what Phil Garner is saying publicly,..."  that is beautiful.
