Why would the Astros want to have three catchers on the roster?  It seems like a horrible waste of the spot.  Find the best hitter or the most versatile fielder, and put that guy on the roster.

To better enable pinch hitting for the catcher?
To rotate catchers more frequently?
To carry a more bat-first catcher?

Your last sentence is what disappoints me. We had a great catching tandem with those two. I cannot imagine Stubbs is a solution.

Remember that rosters expand to 26 this season. 3 catchers could be a possibility.

What really annoys you is that LSU is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in some polls, while your Longhorns are bowl eligible.

What really annoys me is when people modify “unique”, like “very unique”, when unique already means one of a kind.

But this is way up there.

Exactly. Before Jeter, watching baseball was less fun than watching paint dry. He changed the game forever. God bless him for all he has given us.

Most of these writers could watch a sex tape of Jeter and their wife and say it was the most beautiful art they ever saw.

I for one think it's swell that MLB is approaching these allegations with the seriousness they deserve in order to protect the integrity of the game, unlike two decades ago when MLB swept the steroids scandal under the rug since all the home runs helped people forget that Bud Selig presided over the first World Series cancelation in 90 years.

The Simpsons nailed more than their fair share of things in their first decade, but “Do you want to learn the terrible truth, or do you want to watch me hit dingers?” is way up there.

Compare Tom Herman's three year progression with Matt Ruhle's progression at Baylor. Also consider that Ruhle had to recruit with the label of Rape U hung on the school and also that he went 1-11 his first year.

This drives me crazy because the NCAA will burn a program to the ground if a kid takes a loan, but coaches covering up rapes doesn’t even hit on their radar.

Two of the five public HOF ballots so far have dropped everyone but Jeter.  The full retard is still strong with HOF voters.

If they really want to honor Jeter, they should make casting a really easy ballot look difficult.

Major League Baseball's investigation into the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal remains underway but no other teams are currently under suspicion, commissioner Rob Manfred told reporters Wednesday.

"I have no reason to believe it extends beyond the Astros at this point in time," Manfred said at the owners meetings in Arlington, Texas, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Interesting about Reid. I wonder the inside story. Nolan Ryan is a world-class jerk who did nothing day to day but lend his name.

The fact that they already announced Jared taking his place rather than searching for a replacement says to me that Jim wanted his son in the job to start grooming him, and shoved Reid out to make it happen.

I’ve seen speculation that this has something to do with the handling of Taubman but that makes no sense. If you’re looking for a fall guy then you make public that the move is for that reason.

And it makes no sense that the Astros would know about a thyroid issue and choose not to treat it, thereby depressing White's value both to the Astros and to any potential trade partners.  If getting him to slim down was as easy as giving him some pills, they would've done it a long time ago.

Yes, the franchise who turned Josh James into a prospect once his sleep apnea got treated would certainly ignore this in a major leaguer.

$33.3MM is not even Zach Greinke money.  Strasburg and Scherzer are making $38MM, and Strasburg is set to make $45MM in 2023.  It will take AT LEAST $45MM/year, and someone may throw $50MM per at him.  I will be gobsmacked if his total deal is less than $350MM

Stras made $18M the last 2 years and drops to $15M if he doesn’t opt out. The Nats have some weird structures to their deals. Scherzer makes $42M but most is deferred to 2028.

Always some shit (Yuli's gesture, Taubman's outburst)

Last fifteen years has brought us unparalleled joy, but also

1. WS sweep in 1st WS ever
2. ALDS loss to the Royals when leading late 2015/16?
3. ALCS loss to the Red Sox 2018
4. WS favorites --- one the highest of all-time

to go with our already stellar heart attack Astros teams of the 70s/80s/90's

Its in our DNA; If we do win this thing, it will be in the most unbelievable way possible.

I want to know if the SI reporter went to Astros top brass about it before posting the report.  We train our staff to report abuse of any kind right away before doing anything else.  Don't let a perpetrator have any more time to continue bad behavior than can be helped.

If it wasn’t to top brass, it was to PR. And any halfway competent PR staffer sees that story and picks up the bat phone to Crane.

It looks like (1) the Astros got the facts wrong in the press release; (2) Traubman was being an ass at work and embarrassed the organization; and (3) the Stros could have diffused the situation with a simple you-misunderstood-the-motives-but-we-are-so-sorry-our-behavior-was-inexcusable, which was really the only thing appropriate. If Traubman and the Astros intended to defend Osuna they've accomplished exactly the opposite. Osuna and the Astros will never be able to walk away from the domestic violence storyline now.

It would have been so easy to say “in the celebration, our employee made comments that could have been misconstrued. We reiterate our commitment to combating domestic violence and look forward to a great World Series.”

Instead, they took a brush fire and napalmed it.

I've been feeling under the weather since last Sunday's marathon where I got two hours of sleep...I only had a couple of Love Street to keep the vibe going, but some Nyquil and a good night's sleep, and I was ready this morning.  Morning is my favorite time for a cigar anyway.  Might as well be the victory kind.

I feel you there. The kids passed off a nasty cold to me a couple days ago, but its the postseason and you play through pain.

74
After the first inning, the Yankees only had one baserunner, and that was the little bloop single by Gregorius.

Other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?

I have a hard time believing that the Astros are going to sweep the Yankees in New York.  I am cautiously confident that we will win one of the two games.  Which means going back to Houston up 3-2.  Not sure how the Yankees go with a bullpen day in game 6 if they are facing elimination.  So Yankees start Severino game 6.  I'd go Urquidy because I don't want to start Cole on short rest.

I would have had a hard time believing Boston would sweep us in Houston last year.

Indeed, it could have gone either way. If Texas converts in the red zone in the first quarter, the game might have turned out very differently. Like I said, I love Ehlinger. He's a leader and one helluva QB. In my opinion, Texas is indeed back. It's clear beyond cavil that, after considering your Georgia asswhipping in the bowl game and this game with LSU, the difference betwen the SEC and Texas is zero.

It also appears the difference between Tennessee and Kansas is zero. Hoo boy.

Meanwhile, Deutschedramat has responded to a court order to state whether they have certain documents relating to Trump's finances, including his tax returns.  A source told Lawrence O'Donnell that the bank confirmed they had some (or some parts) of Trump's tax returns, and also that some of his loans had Russian co-signers.

By way of confirmation, Trump's lawyers are threatening O'Donnell with legal action.

The possibility that he has Russian co-signers on  loans should be a blaring, giant, off the charts scandal.  It isn't.

BTW, on this very day in 2014, Obama wore a tan suit to the White House briefing room, and conservatives proclaimed the end of civilization as we know it.

Springer walks.

So candidates for ugliest play:

E1
E2
Bases loaded 2 out walk trailing 13-0

The ump show with a live ball was the ugliest play.

For me, Yordan is too high.  The league's pitchers have adjusted.  Until he adjusts back I'd have him at 6 with Gurriel at 5.  Bregman and Brantley are red hot.  I'd leave them at 3 and 4.  Correa is so cold I'd put him at 7.

Correa is hitting .259/.405/.603 this month. I’ll take that as “cold”.

I have been playing around with lineups. Catcher and Reddick/Marisnick at the bottom are set. What do y’all think about this:

Springer
Altuve
Yordan
Bregman
Brantley
Correa
Gurriel
Chirinos/Maldonado
Reddick/Marisnick

I don’t think it makes much difference, but if you believe that Alvarez will continue hitting like this, he has to hit third.

No doubt Berkman has verbal diarrhea, but Eschenfelder is part of the problem. A play by play guy has to control the booth and respond to the tempo of the game. But Eschenfelder is a studio host by trade, and a studio host is trained to just tee up the commentators around him. So he’s teeing up a guy who just won’t quit talking instead of controlling the booth.

Watching Astros pre-game right now and Stanton is very excited about Sanchez. "this is a very good pitcher" not having a very good season right now but Strom will help him turn it around or to those effects.

Obvious to me that other pieces have to be moving to finish this deal but

Pretty good deal for Cleveland, not a fan of Puig but he can play. They also get a good pitching prospect and a pretty good outfiled bat in Reyes

Reds get a really good but basket case pitcher and only give up a rental(Puig) and their best prospect, which they might regret.

And so far the Padres get... an outfield prospect. More has to be coming in for the Padres, otherwise this makes absolutely no sense for them.

Amazing.  Rosenthal and others have reported the Astros linked to just about every good starting pitcher.  The job Luhnow is doing of putting everyone off is incredible.  Certainly all of the other post-season contenders are wondering what the Astros are going to do.  If this keeps them occupied at all then fantastic.

To that point:

@TBrownYahoo

ETA: I try to avoid those national speculation sites because they are only guessing. One today, however, matched up the Astros with Syndergard, Vasquez (Pirates LH reliever), and James McCann. That would be a nice haul.

That would be Christmas in July, but might wipe out the farm system.

I was listening to WFAN last night, and Steve Sommers suggested that the gamers should trade Syndergaard for Tucker, Whitley, and Yordan.  Wow.  Anything else?

I could see the Astros trading one of Tucker or Whitley + others for Syndergaard.  But I would imagine that any calls about Yordan are very short and usually end with Luhnow laughing maniacally as he hangs up.

Yaaah, you think we could get Bregman and dat short little guy plus Alvarez for Thor? Imma hang up and listen.

Top 1:
Springer walks, Altuve singles, and then Bregman, Brantley, and Alvarez strand them.

Bottom 1:
Rondon does Rondon things, giving up 5 runs without an out on an assortment of doubles, bleeders, and walks.

I have seen some speculation that Cy Sneed is the call up and that makes some sense, as much sense as anybody else anyway. The issue is getting him on the 40-man but I think they may transfer Smith to the 60-day IL for now and cross that bridge when he's ready to return

Certainly would help if the US ladies had any accuracy what so ever on their balls in the box. So many whiffed chances thanks to bad passes.

Also would help if the coach didn’t insist on playing a clearly hobbled Alex Morgan for 80 minutes.

Scotland got screwed by the VAR today. Speaking as an ex goal keeper.

Replay used to nitpick calls that are correct by the letter of the rule but completely ignore the way the game has been played for a century?

Brantley with a soft fly ball on the first pitch. Good thing Straw can't run or anything, or he'd feel cheated at not being given the opportunity to get into scoring position.

The two guys you're counting on most for professional at bats right now, and neither one reads the situation. Especially Bregman - nobody out, let the kid take a base so a ground ball sets up the run without a hit.

That brings us back to Stroman. As I understand it, there are two more years of club control. Toronto has been a good trading partner lately. Are they ready to send him on? Would it take Tucker to get him? Could Strom improve his control?

I know there's a lot of chatter about Stroman, but he seems to be a sinker-heavy pitcher - exactly the opposite of what the Astros seem to emphasize.

Tucker has failed once in MLB when they gave him LF. He is no Alvarez in any respect.

Tucker “failed” to the same tune that Bregman did. Let’s see if he’s made the same kind of adjustments.
