Yuli signed a 1 year $8.3M deal, eligible for free agency after 2020.

That is a bargain. Seems like he could have got more in arbitration. Happy to have him on the team.

Here is the upside for Yuli in the contract: (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/yuli-gurriel-astros-arbitration-free-agent.html)
Yuli Gurriel’s five-year, $47.5MM contract with the Astros affords him the opportunity to opt into MLB’s arbitration system once eligible. But he’ll forgo that right and play out the 2020 season on the original $8.3MM salary dictated by the contract, tweets USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
Although Gurriel will have only four-plus years of service time when his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2020 season — as opposed to the six years typically required to become a free agent — he’ll nevertheless head to the open market next winter. Gurriel’s contract stipulates that he be released by the Astros upon completion of the deal at the end of the 2020 season, thus allowing him an opportunity to once again test free agency.

Yuli has been a great addition. Fuck “racist gesture.” He seems to be loved in the clubhouse.

Amen. People forget that he came from a totalitarian country where he had no money. Being rich and free simultaneously for the first time must be like drinking from the fire hydrant.

I would attribute it even moreso to different cultures having different sensibilities when it comes to race. It is not uncommon in Latin America, for example, for anyone of Asian descent to be referred to as "chino," whereas in our culture, referring to all people of Asian descent as Chinese (or all people of Hispanic descent as Mexican) would be considered inappropriate.

Astros added some prospects to the 40 man roster to protect them in the Rule 5 draft:
Cristian Javier (RHP), Enoli Paredes (RHP), Taylor Jones (1B/OF) and Nivaldo Rodriguez (RHP)

Mets are sniffing around Chirinos. I hope we sign both catchers.

They won't be signing Grandal who just signed with the White Sox.

But the Sox might now make James McCann available via trade. McCann used to catch JV.

Am I reading it right that he'd be a free agent after the 2020 season?

So did Chirinos, and JV heaped praise on him.,

Certainly. Just throwing it out there if we don’t get both guys back.

Funny to me that Chirinos is 2 years older than Machete. Would have guessed the opposite.

He is, but only making $5M this season.

I was thinking more about what a team would have to give up to get him.

The Astros would have to add more than Reddick (money and/or some other player) to get that done.

My guess has been that if they move him, the Astros will be footing a significant portion of his salary.

I would think Detroit would insist on prospects or younger players.

Details, details. Next you’ll say Reddick is no longer with the As.

He’s going back to them in the dispersal draft when the Astros get disbanded

Kaplan reports that Astros signed Dustin Garneau to a 1-yr deal. Intended to be glove-first back-up catcher.

He's out of options. He may simply be an insurance policy at backup for Stubbs (i.e. if/when Stubbs is called up he goes bye bye).
So Chirinos (or Machete) may still be in the cards at starter. But I guess we won't get both.

Your last sentence is what disappoints me. We had a great catching tandem with those two. I cannot imagine Stubbs is a solution.

Remember that rosters expand to 26 this season. 3 catchers could be a possibility.

Why would the Astros want to have three catchers on the roster? It seems like a horrible waste of the spot. Find the best hitter or the most versatile fielder, and put that guy on the roster.

Seriously? For the same reason they wanted Ceteno on the playoff roster in 2017.

To better enable pinch hitting for the catcher?
To rotate catchers more frequently?
To carry a more bat-first catcher?

There are lots of reasons to want three catchers. It's always been tough due to roster limits, but having the 26th spot opens up huge possibilities. A better question is why *wouldn't* you want the option of a third catcher?
