I (half) remember a quote from some famous General so, paraphrasing, and possibly adding profanity that wasn't in the original:

Every campaign goes according to plan right up until first contact with the enemy; then it all goes to shit.

Puig up to face Devo.

Puig takes an off speed strike,  and another,  fights off a good one too close to take,  watches a 96 mph fb outside,  then ball 2 is in the dirt,  checks his sewing (did he?) For a full count,  fouls off the next one,  and another.

McCann out to reset.

Puig with a full count STRIKES THE FUCK RIGHT OUT!

Final Score
ASTROS 7
Dodgers 5

Series tied 1-1

Ladies and gentlemen,  that is the first WS win in franchise history.

Would need a rent house (large family) strategically placed.  Any good recommendations on family friendly restaurants?  Etc. Also, Can you go watch them practice if there isn't a game, and if so, is it also at te stadium?  Thanks in advance.

I do indeed.  It's a Dean EVO FT:  HH, a 3 way switch (NTTAWWT), coil tap.  It's a great guitar; when on single coil, the neck pickup sounds like a Tele, and in humbucker mode is very warm.  Got it for a great price, second hand, but never used (good seller).  Maple top, sort of an orange tiger-stripey (called "Flame Maple").  Good bookmatching, nice finish.  It makes it good match to my other Dean, the acoustic, which I'm really pleased with now that I have a set of strings on it I like (Elixir coated 12s).  It's really bright, sounds great through and amp too.  The new electric is the first electric I've had in about 7 years (previously had an archtop), and my first solid body in 10 years, so I'm having a lot of fun with it.  The best thing is I play every night now, it's pretty much a ritual of spending an hour with the guitars.  I decided since I bought the Beatles box set that I'd reacquaint myself with playing their music, starting with Revolver.
How's the PRS working out?  Playing much?  I was looking at SE's but they were a bit more than I wanted to spend, though I did seriously covet the SE Semi Hollow.  I would, however, highly recommend Dean to anyone looking, at least to try them out at the store.  They market mainly to the heavy metal crowd, so their line is a bit odd looking, but they make some sweet traditional looking and sounding guitars as well for us oldsters.

For Christmas, we bought our 9 yr old son a Dean EVO Playmate.  I can't wait to see his face when he sees it.  It will be great.  I'm glad to hear good reviews on Dean.

Not really, I like Christmas - I like hanging out with the family and buying the loudest toys on the planet for my brother's kids.  I just despise cold weather, and for it to snow it must be cold, hence my distaste for snow.  As far as the activities of the co-workers...I could see it if it were either snowing pretty hard (enough for it to stick on your clothes or some such) or accumulating on the ground.

Snow is what makes the cold weather tolerable.

When they showed a shot of Zambrano crying in his towel, all I could say was "There is no crying in baseball!"  I felt no twinge of empathy for him or his team given the amount of shenanigans and manipulations that went on the last month or so.  I can't really blame the Cubs for taking advantage of all that was handed to them, but to act like you've done something marvelous when in fact you know and anyone else who pays attention beyond a sound bite you actually have not.  Stay humble or the BBGs will humble you.

BTW - it ain't over, the Cubs will make the Dodgers squirm the next two games and possibly bring it back to Wrigley for one more Zambrano moment.  You heard it here first.  And Zambrano won't do any better the next time around either.

Changing your mind so soon?

I'd prefer a top 16 based playoff that includes all conference champions (there are 11 conferences in the FBS), which would guarantee teams in mid-major conferences access, then you're left with just 5 at-large berths.  This year that would have included conference non-winners Georgia, Missouri, Kansas, Arizona State, and Florida (just going by the last BCS rankings) and left out Illinois, Boston College, Clemson...  In my book that's just fine.  If you go with just 8 teams you're going to end up with BCS conference teams nearly exclusively.  Hawaii this year wasn't in the top 8 of the rankings.

16 game playoff will never happen because the bowl games, especially the Rose Bowl are so lucrative.  I think the +1 is the closest to a "playoff" that college will get and that's only if the Rose Bowl agrees.

CODA was nothing more than a compilation of outtakes from previous recording sessions that was released after Bonham passed away.  It nothing more than that.

However, I found "In Through The Out Door", their real last studio release, to be somewhat uninspiring particular when compared to all their previous releases.

The version of "I Can't Quit You Baby" from Coda is superior to the one on LZ I.  It was recorded during rehersals for the Royal Albert Hall show that you can watch on the DVD they realeased a few years ago.

In Through the Out Door was a product of the changing music scene of the times (more heavily relied on synthesizers) but still one day I put it in the old tape deck of my car and couldn't take it out because it's like an old friend you haven't talked to in a long, long time.

I was born the same day the untitled 4th album was released, so I was destined to be a Zeppelin freak.

Not only that, but he'd have to somehow dole out hand slaps to managers and owners.  If the MR showed anything, its how much management suspected and/or knew of players doing steroids, yet looked the other way.

Seems to me they're one and the same, hence the report's reference to those specific Garner quotes.

Does it actually say, though, that Garner had this conversation with the player in 1997? Could it have been earlier?

No, Garner said that the incidnet occurred over 5 years ago, so it could be anybody between his time w/ the Brewers or Tigers ('92 - '02).

Amphetamines.

They have been more the norm in the MLB landscape than steriods.  The grind of a 162 season means a player is not going to have the natural stamina to play every game or as many games as possible.  MLB play requires the player to be at his best night in and night out.  It's not going to happen naturally... so players for many years now have taken greenies (amphetamines) to get "up" for a game.  Most of the time, they hide in the coffee they drink before or even during the game.

Wouldn't that show up in a urine test?

The way I read that was the 27 year old and the "major league player" were two different players.

There is no urine test for HGH, which is the only test that is used in MLB right now.  There is a blood test that detects it, though.  If they want to, they can.

From page 76 of the Mitchell Report (124 of PDF file):
Quote
Similarly, in an article that appeared in early August, days before stories first
appeared about Mark McGwire’s use of androstenedione, then-Milwaukee Brewers manager Phil
Garner told a reporter of his first-hand knowledge of a player’s steroid use:

There was one kid, 27, who was cycling steroids, and I asked him, ‘Do
you realize you could need an artificial heart when you’re 40 years
old?’. . . He said, ‘I don’t care what happens at 40. All I want to do is be
the biggest, baddest, guy I can be right now.’

In his interview with our investigation, Garner acknowledged that he had known one major
league player who used steroids while playing for him, but Garner refused to identify the player
because it was more than five years prior to the interview and Garner did not believe it was
necessary for this investigation to look that far back in time.

Could it be Julio Franco (1997 Brewers)?

Talk Zone / Footer's take on Everett vs. Tejada

I don't think the Astros have been aggressively trying to get rid of Everett -- quite the contrary. I think they value his defense and would like for him to play shortstop next year. However, there is one shortstop they like a little more -- Tejada. So, for Tejada, they'd give up Everett. Tejada would be a major, major downgrade defensively, but obviously he would be a huge upgrade at the plate, even with his declining production.

I was surprised to see her put it this way, implying that the Astros like Tejada more than Everett.  Maybe my meter reader is set to super sensitive today.

My Irish girlfriend makes marmite roasted potatoes which are quite good.

is it possible that this hijacked thread will get hijacked again?

Before it happens and the whole of OWA begins singing the praises of marmite, i'd like to go back to Mac vs. PC.  My wife and I are in the market for a new computer, and I'm convinced that it should be a laptop.  that way we keep our old computer and the tons of shit that we have on it (music, movies, pictures, etc.) and the kids can take over to play Lego Star Wars whenever they please.

[stupid questions]

1) Are wireless routers compatible with both PC and Macs?  We'd still want to be able to use the old computer to get on the internet and all that.

2) The main thing we'd want to do with the lap top is internet and email, but I also want to do minor photo/video editing.  (We're talking slide show from our family vacation type stuff, not Star Wars Episode VII.)  My question, will the bottom line mac notebook handle that type of stuff?

[/stupid questions]

So...I keep reading that Lincecum is available.  I've also read that they are considering a Rios for Lincecum offer.  I realize Pence is Drayton's new golden boy, but do you think a Pence for Lincecum (plus maybe even another player) has even been discussed?

I'd hate to lose Pence, but if we could insert Lincecum into the rotation, that would be nice.  Seems like it would solve a lot of problems.

A rotation with Roy and Lincecum would be a force to be reckoned with.  Wow.

AE doesn't have to be in the deal if what the Orioles want is to dump salary.  Houston could send them Wiggington and Burke + pitcher (Guiterrez?).  I imagine that whatever the Orioles think they can get in a Bedard deal might include a good shortstop, so Houston doesn't have to make this deal with only the vacancy that would be there by Tejada leaving.  Bedard might get back what the Orioles need and in that case, Tejada is a salary dump and a good risk for a third base job here in Houston.

I never thought of it this way, but I would still think that the sum of the talent given up by the Astros would have to be equivalent to what the O's are giving up in Tejada regardless of the fact that they may be dumping salary.  And in that case does Wiggy+Burke+Gutierrez = Tejada?  [missing youtube link] Chevy Chase on SNL:  It was my understanding that there would be no math. I personally do not like this deal unless AE is at short and Tejada is at 3rd.  If there is an option to offer Wiggy instead of AE, please Lord, take it.

I don't think the O's would do this deal if they weren't getting AE.  Wiggy + Burke + Patton for Tejada seems a bit of a stretch.

Talk Zone / Re: RIP Evel
« on: November 30, 2007, 04:13:39 pm »
Man.  I remember pretending to be Evel Knievel every time I got on my bike.

Growing up I lived on a quarter mile long, dead-end gravel road.  One day Billy Craddock (the oldest on the street) challenged Robbie Green (the meanest) to a race to the end of the road and back, but this race had a catch.  Billy would be on a 10 speed Schwinn and Robbie on a 90 cc Yamaha.  The deal was that Robbie would let Billy get to the end of the road before he took off on the Yamaha.  So the race started, Robbie gave Billy pretty much the length of the road before he tore out.  Once Rob had left, I thought it would be a good idea to play Evel Knievel.  I would see how many times I could cross the road before they got back - yes, it sounds incredibly stupid now, but to a 10 year old kid it was truly "living on the edge."

I don't even remember how many times I crossed the road before Rob ran over me on his motorcycle.  He drug me a pretty good ways.

For the record, Billy lost the race.  He eased in to the "finish line", called me a dumbass, and retired to his room.

So long Evel and farewell.

« on: November 30, 2007, 03:42:04 pm »
Last year, and earlier this year, it was pretty much a non-issue because the games they aired were teams with so-so records.  But since the Packers/Cowboys game was so high profile, it really created a shit storm in the weeks leading up to it.

So this leads me to wonder how the NFL Network chooses the games they air.  They could force the issue if they can pick and choose the games.  Imagine them getting the Colts/Pats games every year.

He's 5 years removed from his best season and he didn't pitch at all last year and 43 innings in 06. That's taking a chance but whether it's better, I can't say.

I remember all the hype about how Prior was the "model" of how a pitcher should be brought up and it would change the way young pitchers are developed in the future, and on and on and on.

Was all of that total bs, or does the blame lie squarely on Baker's shoulders?

My brother's band (he's the drummer) debuted their first music video at the Houston Halloween Film Festival this past weekend. The video was shot at the Foodorama on TC Jester in late August. My husband and I wandered over (after my bro told us about the shoot) after taking in an Astros game, and we're in the background pushing shopping carts around (along with a buncha other folks doing the same thing). Any time you see the Hispanic-looking woman with the baby, that's my brother's wife and their little boy :)

Wow, now that would have been cool to see assuming they could properly pull it off.

Vocals - Freddie Mercury
Lead Guitar - Jimi Hendrix
Bass - Cliff Burton

What Biggio said really had an impact on Pence tonight - He ran like his pants were on fire.

I was sitting in 222 3rd row with a really good birds eye view of Drayton.  Once Qualls started having issues and the boo-birds came out, he started shifting in his seat.  I took a short video clip the next time it happened, but he had already adjusted to it.  Shortly thereafter my wife noted that Drayton was gone, and I said, "yeah, he just went down and fired Qualls."  When he came back he was all smiles so he must have taken great pleasure in that.

The Pirates' rookie cf, Morgan, was the difference in the game snagging what would surely would have been a 3 run triple from Wiggy.  He made several other nice plays.  You have to applaud his skills, but damn...

There was a Brit couple sitting in front of us and I almost asked if it happened to me Mr. and Mrs. Limey, but as I leaned forward, I saw him drinking a Budweiser and knew that Limey would never stoop to that level.

« on: September 11, 2007, 11:52:48 am »
A very real problem with the free-agent scheme is the cost in draft choices. That's not insignificant for a farm system that's already thin. I agree with some of the other people here: this team has problems that aren't likely to allow a quick fix, and it's going to take several years with a good plan and a steady hand to get back to where we all want them to be.

But does Drayton have that steady hand?  I'm not so sure that the "fans" that he polls in the stands will approve of 2 or 3 years of mediocrity.  If the Astros aren't winning, attendance will plummet and then what will the grocer do?

On the other hand, he insisted that the Astros were NOT rebuilding, so maybe he will open the wallet a bit wider for some FA acquisitions.  As this tread has shown, the 2008 version of the Astros, if it resembles the 2007 Astros, is a scary thought.

So why did he fire Garner?

Maybe having fired Hickey and Galletti mid-season last year and not seeing the results he thought that should bring (a WS ring), caused McLane to kick it up a notch this time?  Maybe he figured that by doing it now will remove any albatross from next season's club?

Next year's Astros are going to look completely different (maybe even top to bottom staff changes such as no more Cheo or Mansolino), and maybe he felt that a "fresh start" is all that this team needs?

I don't really put too much stock that he made up his mind to do the deal while polling the fans.  I met him about 4 years ago after a loss, and he asked me why "we" lost that game.  I was dumbfounded, and I just said, "because they scored more runs than we did."

the reason for all those teams in HS is so parents will not be able to bitch early when their kids get cut. it is a variation of the "every kid is an all star" principle, which evolved from the "every kid gets a trophy" rule. all those teams funnel into ONE varsity team so the lesser among them eventually will be cut. it merely postpones the allegations of "coach politics."

Just curious, Jim, but do you disagree with the philosophy that at the lower levels every kid should play?  My 7 year old finishes YMCA ball tonight, and that is how they do it.  I agree with it because a kid can't learn the game if he's not playing.

The "trophy" rule, while seemingly nonsensical to us, was a big hit with the kids.  Giving them a little something for all their hard work is well worth it, imo, since they don't track wins/losses at that level.

The costs for YMCA was $120 for uniform/administrative fees, 20 bucks for the trophies/coaches' gifts, and 12 bucks for an "official" team photo.

I know that's one of the cheaper routes, but it's still a bit steep for me.

Oh hi, how's it going? It's me! Every girl ever.

I'm really looking forward to this date. I'm not nearly as attractive as you remember me being because when we met the bar was dark and you were drunk. Come on in. Let's start off with the unavoidable tour of my incredibly typical post-college-girl apartment.

You'll notice that I went ahead and purchased everything that Ikea and Pier 1 have ever produced. There's my decorative birdcage over there even though I don't have a bird, and there's my gay wicker basket with bamboo poles in it. I don't know what the hell that's thing's all about, but I bought it. Hey check it out, I have more candles in here than a Roman Catholic Church. Doesn't it smell like Hazelnut!? If I were to light all of my candles at once you could see my apartment from space! I love candles!

Come on into the living room. Oh, I see you met my cat there. That's "Freddy Paws Jr." Why don't you pet him and act like you like cats even though you hate cats? There you go. Oh, he took a little swing at your eye there huh? Yeah, he'll do that.

Hey, let's check out the kitchen. Hey look at my refrigerator. There are pictures all over it! Look at all these pictures of me and my equally vacuous friends from college! We were so crazy! You can tell we're really good friends because our faces are all pressed up against each other like that. And check it out, we're holding up alcoholic beverages to the camera in every single picture. That's to prove that we were partying. College was so fun! But of course I don't talk to any of these girls anymore because now they're all bitches.

Let's go back into the hallway! Hey, before we leave I'm going to go in the bathroom for ten minutes for some mysterious reason. Why don't you sit awkwardly in my big, stupid, round papizan chair over there while you wait for me. It's like you're sitting in a hug! Be right back... Sorry that took a half an hour, I don't know what the hell I was doing in there. Let's go!

Wow! Thanks for opening my car door for me! I'm totally going to blow that meaningless gesture out of proportion and delude myself into thinking that you're a really good guy because that's what I want to believe.

Well, here we are at the restaurant. No thanks waiter, I don't need to see a menu, just bring me some expensive things. Hey I know, while we wait, I'll tell you all about my unspeakably boring job. I hate my boss. He's a jerk! I might get another job. Maybe something in pharmaceutical sales.
Now let's talk about my family. I love my family. I want you to love my family. I want my family to love you. I want you to make love to my family! I want you to go golfing with my semi-retarded brother Travis. That would be so darn cute!

Wow! I can't believe I ordered all this food! I have no intention of eating any of it. No thanks waiter, we don't need a box. Just throw it out.

Hey, I've got an idea, let's go to a bar and have an after dinner drink! It'll be great, it will be just like how we're drinking here, only it will be louder and we'll have to stand up. Come on! See, isn't this better?

Oh hey, what a coincidence. Look over there! It's a group of my friends that I knew was going to be here. Let's go over there so that they can judge you!

Hey, I have to go to the bathroom for a half an hour again for some reason. You can stay here and talk to my unbelievably hideous friend Christine! Christine's so ugly she scares kids! Talk to her! She has a job and a family that she wants to talk to you about too. Be right back.
I'm back! Sorry I was gone for three hours, there was a line. I want to go home now.

Well here we are at my door again. This was really fun for me and not you. You should pretend like we're going to do it again sometime! Maybe I'll see you at Target a few months from now and we can avoid eye contact because you never called me.

Here, have this awkward goodnight kiss that's as empty as my soul. Good night!

So, she dumped you, eh?

It is very nice.  All the bells and whistles of Minute Maid Park, but a much more intimate atmosphere.  16 oz Draft beer is 4.50, plastic bottles 5.00.  Cotton candy - 3 bucks, Cracker Jacks were either 2 or 3 bucks.  Tickets were cheap, but the only available seats were outfield grass berm.  It was a pisser because it rained it's ass off earlier that day, so the grass was going to be soaked and there were a shit load of empty seats all around.  However, there are picnic type tables lining the left and right field concourse that you could sit at, and that is what we did.

I think my kids enjoyed the Hooks game more than an Astros game mainly because they were able to stand up and kind of run around a bit near the table we were sitting.  There was a place for the kids to play in center field, but much of it was closed due to the weather.  The ball throw and batting cage were both open for a buck a piece.

Leaving the game, my 4 year old said, "Dad, the Astros aren't my favorite team anymore...now it's the Hooks!!"

Oh, and another thing, Whataburger Field is the site of the 2007 Texas League All Star Game on June 26th.

Took the family to Corpus Christi last week and we were able to catch the Friday night Hooks game vs. the Springfield Cardinals.  Patton was pitching for the Hooks and he pitched a damn good game.  I'd never before been to a minor league game, and I was in culture shock for much of the game.  The paid attendance was ~7100, but there were many empty seats due to the deluge a few hours prior to game time.  The result of this was a very quiet ballpark.  So quiet that my kids seemed to be the loudest ones there.

We loved the experience.  What a great ballpark.

In all my years of reading this board and it's illustrious predecessor, I have never witnessed such a juvenile reaction to an event.

Go back a few pages and you'll see many posters waxing poetic about the glory of Fathers and Sons sharing the love of baseball together.  Why many here are calling for Koby's head and questioning Roger's working out with his son are beyond me.  Any Astro wanting to play ball with his kid would probably not be met with such vitriol.

...homeschooling ... what makes it attractive?

I've no children but I would guess, the alternative.

Control over doctrine and outside influences, I imagine are of great appeal.

That's a big part of it, if not the main reason why we homeschool.  Plus even our elementary schools are getting so overcrowded that the teacher/student ratio is getting out of hand and they must use temporary buildings to house all the students.

And I've always had issues with the TAKS test.  This is a minimum competency test, yet the schools "teach the TAKS test."  In other words, their syllabus is designed so that their students will pass the TAKS test and hence be at minimum competency.

We can't afford private school, so that's out of the question for the moment.  (Homeschooling isn't free either, as you have to buy all kinds of materials and textbooks.)

Of course we still have to pay outrageous taxes because we live in "such a good school district."  Some people use the argument that "you're paying for public school anyway, might as well use it," but again, for the reasons cited above, we're sticking with homeschooling for now.

We do keep an open mind on the matter and each year we discuss if my wife is still up to the challenge.  So far, all is well.

I don't know any part of Kingwood from which you can get to downtown in a 45 minute commute, though.  On the other hand, the beltway wasn't really an option yet when I lived there.

This past Sunday we left our driveway in Kingwood at 10:30am, and arrived in the door at Annunciation (Catholic Church right across the street from MMPUS) at 11:00am.  I couldn't believe it.  I kept telling my wife that there was no way we'd be at Mass on time, but we walked in with the Priest!

I know that's on a Sunday morning, but my point is depending on where you are in Kingwood and the time that you commute, it is possible to be downtown in 45 minutes or less.

I live in Kingwood, and we love it, but I don't think it would match your 45 minute commute.  You may want to check out Summerwood.  That place has really exploded with new developments and nice perks like a community swimming center with a "water-park" type layout.  Huffman may give you more land than Summerwood and you could still have that community feel, but I'm not sure what that would do for your commute.  Still around 45 minutes, I would guess.

And you may want to check out Crosby.  This would be the more rural (more land) of the three, so less "community" but with 5 kiddos, you have your own community, so it may not be that big of a deal.

With Huffman and Crosby, they both have their "less than desirable" spots, but with the help of a good agent, you can find really good places to live in each of these.

We are so blessed to live in America, yet many people take our freedom for granted.  A mere 5 years later and we've already been lulled back to the sleep of "normalcy" when it comes to our day to day activities.  Heaven forbid we can't bring hair gel or shampoo in our carry on bags.  What, no gel bras either?  Oh the horror.  The same people that bitch and moan about the "oppression" of the government and their "lack of freedom" due to these security measures are the same people that would question why tighter security hadn't been implemented in the aftermath of an attack.  I think people like to bitch.  We will always find something to bitch about.  I personally would rather give up my toiletries than be blown up enroute to my destination city.

I would much rather our government have wiretaps on terrorists during this time than be prevented because it "infringes on the liberties" of those who want to kill the innocent.  Oh yeah, "if they do it here, it's only a matter of time before they do it all the time to everyone."  Yeah.  Get over yourself.  And I thought I was a conspiracy theorist.  We are in a war, but the problem is that this war cannot be won, just like the war on drugs is an unwinnable war.  So, does that mean we just stick our heads in the sand and act like it doesn't exist?  Hell no.  Right now, it is drastic measures for these drastic times.  That means that we may have to give up some luxuries that we equate with freedom to make the nation as a whole safer.  Why is that such a problem?  Why is it that the Left is so intent on allowing every jihadist more freedom than those who he's trying to kill?

And the media?  Don't get me started.  They're going to stir the pot regardless because it's all about ratings.  I love to see them eating crow when they publish something that conforms to what they are trying to feed the masses only to learn after the fact that the report was faked, the photos were doctored, the stories were false.

So, by all means, let's stop the unjust opression by the government.  It's too much.  Restrictions cramp our style.  Wiretapping a terroist cell is unconstitutional.  Let's just stop all of that tomfoolery.

Let's get Cindy Sheehan to run for president!  That would be great.  We'd really be safe with people like her in office.  I know I would feel very safe.  Of course, I'm not sure she could run if she's living in Venezuela..oh wait, she has all this money to spend on flying around the world, says she'd rather live in Venezuela than under Bush, yet she buys land not in Venezuela, but in....Crawford??  WTF??

And since I'm talking about Dave Roberts...that is his name isn't it??...it's going to take me a while to get used to his "Nothing and two" type counts.  That just drives me nuts to hear him say that.

I'd call the entire team into a huddle and explain that baseball is a game that should teach you a few things about life, and this is one of those teaching moments.  That sometimes to really win, you have to lose.  I'm not saying to throw the game.  No, I would say, to pitch to their best hitter instead of intentionally walking him.  If we are the best, and we know we are the best, then we should be able to beat their best.

I can't imagine any of those boys on the winning team went to bed with smiles on their faces knowing the way that they "won" that game.

From my living room, it looked as though it would have hit the line and bounced down.

The LFer was at the base of the wall looking up.  Assuming that the ball would have hit below the line, it would have glanced off the wall at a greater angle than where he was set up, and he would have had to run back towards the infield to get it.

It's his groin, not his hamstring, but it is still one of those lingering injuries.  I wish they'd let him rest until it is totally healed.  Berkman himself said that instinct took over the last time they told him to "just hit, don't run," and he felt another tweak.  With each tweak comes a few extra days that he'll need to rest it.

I'm sure it would be too costly to put him on the DL retro to the date of the injury, but that would resolve (temporarily) the conundrum of who to send back down once OP comes back.

I've heard of people complaining that by playing too much raquetball, you will screw up your tennis game and vice versa due to the, dare I say, "mechanics", of each swing.

Time will tell.

Good, bad, who knows?  What is interesting is what impact this has on the daily lineup.  Although, JDJO may have done some reporting, for a change, with this comment at the end of his article:

Purpura also made it clear that Huff's acquisition "will cut into (slumping Morgan Ensberg's) playing time."

 JDJO

Not sure if the "Slumping Morgan Ensberg" was stated, implied, or simply assumed.   If it was stated, that has me wondering if Ensberg is hurt?

The guy from KTRH asked what this move will do to Ensberg's playing time and he went on to say how it's obvious that Ensberg has been struggling.  Purp simply acknowledged Ensberg's struggles and said perhaps his shoulder is still bothering him but nonetheless this move will cut into his playing time.

Another good point that Purpura made regarding Lane was that the time has come that a player's potential now has to translate into production.

I've always wondered about the mentality of a pitcher coming up through the minor leagues.  I would think that your main focus is being a starter.  Then they put you in the bullpen.  Is that a let down?  It seems to me that pitchers who are "supposed" to be starters grumble about being relegated to the bullpen.

Ok, help me out here.  I don't know shit for mechanics, but for some time now on the TZ many have made these statements of his poor mechanics.  If knowlegable fans of the game can see Lidge has poor mechanics, can't the coaching staff see it as well?  I sure as hell hope so.  And if they do see it why can't they tell him to sit until he decides to follow their instruction to correct the problem?

It doesn't seem possible that with veterans like Biggio, Ausmus and (now) Clemens in the clubhouse and on the field that you wouldn't really need Bagwell's presence just for the sake of being there, but I think it helped last year and is sorely missed this year.

1.  Failed to see existing discussion
2.  So his poor CS%, is of no importance?
3.  Should have clarified, not that it would have mattereed.  My main point was that with poor CS% but pretty good fielding percent mixed in with how he calls a great game makes it frustrating to know what to do.  On top of all that, he is having a great year offensively.

Of all qualified Catchers, Ausmus is the worst at caught stealing percentage at a lowly .133, but 5th in fielding percent at .995.  Today was a prime example of teams picking up on that with Pierre stealing 4 bases.  If it weren't the Cubs, those stolen bases would have been very hard to overcome.

Everyone always raves about his defense and that offense from your catcher isn't what you're looking for, well now he's got great offensive production but his defense is sucking.

"He bailed Milo out.
How disappointing to hear the Astros have replaced Alan Ashby, a connection to the 1986 playoff team, in the broadcast booth.

For at least the last two seasons, Ashby has had to cover for the mistakes made by an aging Milo Hamilton. Milo simply can't follow the ball anymore. Countless times Ashby would gently guide the fan until Milo could recover. And Ashby did this without stepping on Hamilton's toes. If any move was appropriate, it would have been to promote Ashby while retiring Milo.

"Not all opposed.
Although I respect what he did on the field for them, I was relieved to hear that the Astros finally released Alan Ashby. For years now, I have turned down my radio during his play-by-play innings, and I was dreading the possibility of a permanent takeover.

His monotone announcing is overly precise, and his delivery sounds the same during an Astros' home run, foul ball or groundout. When Ashby's in color-commentator mode, he spends most of his time contradicting Milo's statements rather than adding new and interesting details. The result is a choppy broadcast that's stressful to listen to (which is a shame, because Milo is amazing).

I know this was a tough decision for the Astros, but they made the right one.

I would bet that they are there already.

As far as going prices, something tells me that tonight's game will not depreciate very much simply because tonight is the first WS game ever played on Texas soil.  Even being down 0-2, tonight is a special night.  Having the Wizard throwing also helps.

Tomorrow night's game may be a good one to be able to get at a drastic discount from the stratospheric levels that they were going at last week, but I'm afraid even a steep discount will still be too much for my broke ass.

I'm seriously thinking of just going down there and hanging out next to the statue of Bags and Biggio.  Let the kids run around while we listen to the game.  I'm sure the roof will be open, so who knows, maybe Morgan will launch a ball over the tracks and I'll be able to sell it and use the money to put all 3 of my kids in college, pay off the house, the car, get my mom that new hip she's been wanting, and with the left over money take my whole family to Italy to see the motherland.

They will most certainly have Bagwell DHing, otherwise, why even have him on the roster?  Talk about sentimental reasons and all that till the cows come home, but the fact remains that if they don't plan on using him at all, they've already let sentimentality skew their decision making process.

So, to me, the very fact that he is on the roster says that they believe in his ability to contribute in a more than just pinch hit situation.  But what the hell do I know!

Are there any concerns about using Bagwell as DH?  I'm not talking so much his hitting ability, but it seems like when he was pinch hitting, they would take him out for a pinch runner if he got on base.  Was that just precautionary, and if so, does that lessen his chance at being the DH?

Speaking of Rotation, do ya'll really think Garner will start Clemens for game 1?  Pettitte would be on 5 days rest if he pitched game 1.  Clemens could pitch game 2 on 8 days rest, which may be good for his hammy.  Then Roy in game 3 on 6 days rest.

One of my fondest memories: 1985.  Freshman in High School.  My dad checks me and my brother out of school to go see the Astros/Pirates game.  Walk up to the gate, buy $2 outfield tickets.  Walk all the way to the rail and from the word "go" endlessly berate Andy Van Slyke.

"Van Slyke Sucks!"

Good times.

Tonight I not only say "Cheers" to the National League Champion Houston Astros...I say Cheers to OWA, and all those who've worked tirelessly to keep this site up and running smoothly to give us all the opportunity to come here and do just what we are doing now.

I first discovered The Big Freight Train in 1998 when I moved to Houston.  I was looking at Yahoo's Astro's team page and it had a link for Astrosconnection.com under "Fan Sites" and I clicked on it...and I've been on board ever since.  Having a place like this to come in and (cyber)Celebrate wins, bemoan losses and postulate assinine trades has made it even more fun being a fan of the Houston Astros.

And a special shout out to Kev and Scott...Thanks Guys!

The main thought that gave me a good feeling was thinking about last year how the ATL tied the NLDS here and the Astros had to go back there for all the marbles.  I can remember many people with their woe-is-us attitude and all the crap about choking, etc.  The same that is happening now with lots of "fans" and media.

That game was tight at first, but then became a laugher, ending, of course, with the 'Stros celebrating their first ever postseason series victory albeit on foriegn soil.

Here's to the Wizard, and if need be, the Rocket to repeat the feat, only leading the team to the next level.

Did Gallo really ask for the ball?  That is seriously against the BBG's standing rules.  One of the Giant's pitchers did that (Ortiz?) when Baker took him out.  The game was well in hand, but the Angels came back to win the Series.

Bruntlett said that he was thinking about two before the play even began, which is key.  When a player is in the game he must think about all the scenarios before the ball is in play, so there is no hesitation once the ball gets to you.  Kudos to Bruntlett.  I am so amazed that the Stros have so many young guys coming up huge in serious pressure situations.

Last year was just gut wrenching.  I couldn't sleep without dreaming of the game just played and the game to be played.  After game 7 I dreamt that the Astros came back and won and when I woke up the thought was so strong, I had to get up and turn it to ESPN to double check.

The Link

My one and only Griffs experience was in the Fall of '98.  We paid for all you can eat/drink plus bus ride and ticket to the Astros/Cardinals game.  It was the night the Big Unit was pitching and Ronald was approaching Maris' record.

I remember thinking that I really needed to drink more just to make sure I "get my money's worth."

The bus ride to and from the dome was very...how do I say it...rough.  Bounced up and down more than a tricked out car on Pimp My Ride and the smell of diesel fumes wafted your nose no matter how fast or slow they were going.

We stuff my wife's purse with like 8 beers to smuggle them in.

I don't recall too much of the game.  We spent most of it at Lefty's.  When we get back to Griffs, our ride hooks up with a chick and leaves us.  We have to catch a ride back with one of his friends who we didn't know.  Too drunk to function, much less drive, we crash at his house.  But he is locked out of his apt. by his room mate.  I'm reaching critical mass and have to visit the bushes out back.

I know, T.M.I.  But great times nonetheless.

I was at Mass when the game was won, so I didn't get to see any of the post game celebration.  I was hoping to catch it on ESPN or Fox Sports SW, but not much luck other than a few snippits.

Did they show much of it?  I know that with each series, they'll show more and more celebration, but to see the team, the fans, the campagne, in it's entirety would be cool.

I sure would like to see them replay the game and the celebration.  Any chance of seeing it again on KNWS a la regular season games?

Also, picking up on the grandeur of this game, it is already reaching epic status.  We have people referring to it as the front nine and the back nine and on top of that there are even "rumors" coming from the game in that the same guy allegedly caught both the Berkman salami ball and the Burke ball.

Amen to all that was said here.

As far as stupid "fans" go, I spent the afternoon monitoring the game from a 3 year old's birthday party.  All the dads were huddled around the tv, while the wives and kids opened yet another superhero present.

At this point it is 5-1 and this one guy is saying how glad he is that he went to last night's game instead of today's game.

After Berkman and Ausmus do their heroics, the guy is sprouting how he wishes he was there.

At one time, Bruntlett was at bat and the guy says, "I've never heard of him."

When Clemens had a bat in the on deck circle the dude was wondering "why would Clemens bat?"  I say because he has to pitch next inning.  To that the guy says, "why is he going to pitch?"

Hello...Is there anybody in there?  Just nod if you can hear me...
