I’m genuinely  curious as to what lead Fiers to come forward,   There are plenty of former Astros out there and none said shit.  I’d also love to have an off the record talk with someone like Altuve or Bregman or George or McCann or AJ as to their thoughts on Fiers.

People have been talking about the Astros and other teams using tech to steal signs for years.   They never ran anything because they didnt want to use “anonymous” sources and hearsay.   Fiers opened the flood gates.

I'm really hoping The Athletic is done with the hatchet jobs and they expose other clubs.

Otherwise I'll have a hard time justifying paying them to throw piles of shit at my favorite team.

All they are waiting for is another Fiers..  Heard that they have sources, for other teams electronic sign stealing, but none are willing to put their names to it like Mike did.

Ok, I am officially fucking confused. Is this about 2017 or the whole history of MLB? In 2017, Beltran was a player, and Cora was a coach.

Sorry.  It is about 2017.   But the punishment, if there is any, wont be to any current players, due to the CBA expiring and the commish not wanting to deal with the players union right now.   Since Beltran is no longer a player, he could be in the cross hairs.  Ultimately my money is on a FO banning, a penalty and fine on the org.  Hinch is next on the likely to be sanctioned, followed by Beltran and Cora.

a new CBA to invoke after 2021.

Which is why it’s really unlikely any player faces serious consequences.  It’s gonna be front office, he org and maybe some coaches including Beltran and Cora.

I agree that this is going on elsewhere, but until there is a Fiers, willing to put his name in public against another team, the Astos are toast.

Fock Fiers.   Has he turned in his WS ring and check from 2017 yet?

Hope I am 1000% wrong on this, but what I heard tonight doesn’t give me much hope, in regards to penalties.  Best case is that the only action is that turd Taubman is banned for life, I fear that won’t be enough.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy

Doesn’t matter what I have.  Just saying MLB has enough.   The hammer is coming down,   To use an analogy, the cops told everyone no more speeding through the neighborhood.   10+ people decided F that and kept  speeding through the neighborhood, the Astros had the BRIGHT RED CORVETTE going 80, and got pulled over.  Now lets hope the penalty isn’t to harsh.

Talk Zone / Re: More controversy
« on: November 22, 2019, 11:30:57 pm »
Pass along a couple things.   MLB told teams after the Red Sox Apple Watch stuff, that is it, next team is going to be in deep shit.  Astros appear to not have cared or  didn’t believe the warning. They have hell to pay now.  Someone is getting banned for life, hopefully it’s only Taubman.   This is similar to the braves GM situation, John Coppolella, who is now banned for life for breaking rules around international signings.  MLB has to make an example of someone who is flaunting the rules.

I personally don’t think the Astros are the only ones stealing signs electronically, but they got caught. Unless a Cubs, Yankee, Dodger, dBack, Red Sox, player s willing to put their name to it, like Fiers, the Astros are gonna be the only ones to suffer.

This sucks, but it is what it is.

Cole owes a lot to Houston. The organization helped him to become great.

100% and he has been a model player/teammate up until the post-game last night.  Totally out of character for how he has been his entire existence as an Astro.

Talk Zone / Re: Cole and Game 5

I find Cole's alleged actions embarrassing for him. I thought he was better than this.

What's been alleged about his actions?  After his team loses game 7 of the world series, he wears a Boras hat and refers to his team as his former employer?  There is nothing "alleged" there, it happened and it was fucking garbage.   If he is mad at Hinch or mad at the front office for some reason, he had the entire offseason to air that.  Terrible look for Cole.

Saw this on Twitter, fwiw.....

Worth noting about Strasburg: he completely obliterated teams with losing records this year (2.22 ERA), including 0.96 with 49 K in 37.1 IP vs. Miami.
Against .500+: 4.01 ERA, 18 HR in 128 IP.

Verlander was the opposite: 2.92 ERA vs. losing teams, 2.06 ERA vs. .500+, 9/1 K/BB.

The values that Footer is expressing is that she wants Osuna off the team. She only tweets it when he pitches and she is smart enough to know it associates the Astros with DV. The number of women who follow her who don't know about DV hotlines and are victims of violence are beyond microscopic; however, her twitter audience is mostly male baseball fans and she wants them to find Osuna unacceptable without her losing her job. Footer has also been around long enough to have a huge number of back channels and favors in the bank to organize a smear campaign against Taubman without having to do it herself.

I'm not saying that she did anything wrong, but she wasn't an innocent person minding her own business either as that person seems to want to portray her.

GTFO

The ASTROS traded for a wife beater.  Some people have a problem with that.  If you don't that is your choice.  But there is absolutely nothing wrong with others pointing out what Osuna did, despite the fact that it triggers a certain group of snowflakes.

If Taubman and the Astros can't handle criticism of bringing in a wife beater, then maybe they should have not traded for him.

No doubt.  I'm sure he was working his ass off to minimize it.

This whole thing still seems bizarre to me.  Could he have been the point man on the Osuna deal?  Taking the fallout personally and dealing with it in such an immature fashion would fit that to me.

That is my guess

Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander are the first teammates to each win 20 games during the regular season but lose Games 1 and 2 of a World Series since Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers in 1965 against the Twins.

The Dodgers would recover to win that series in 7 games.

So, Taubman's little stunt, on top of being disgraceful, also puts MLB in the cross-hairs of a potential workplace harassment suit.  I suspect that both MLB and team lawyers have told the FO to stop short of any statement that might constitute an admission of liability.

(this, of course, would have little to do with that initial abomination of a press release that attacked the SI article)

No apology was ever going to be viewed as a real apology, thats why I put "apologized" in quotes.  All thats really been accomplished is admitting guilt, especially with regard to now seemingly conflicting statements by the organization.  So now everyone gets to yap about what punishment they think everyone involved should get, instead of about what actually happened.

100% horseshit.   Astros employee was a complete shitbag, but he shouldn’t “apologize” because you don’t think some people think that is enough.  GTFO.   If someone does something shitty, they should apologize, unless they are complete trash or raised by wolves.

Other than the fact that they didn’t apologize, nor did they say shit about smearing the reporter and calling her a liar....after admitting she was correct.   Listen to AJ, that’s how it should’ve been handled.

I want to know if the SI reporter went to Astros top brass about it before posting the report.  We train our staff to report abuse of any kind right away before doing anything else.  Don't let a perpetrator have any more time to continue bad behavior than can be helped.

The reporter asked the team for a comment on the story prior to running it.  The Astros said "No Comment"   Then released that ridiculous press release calling it fake news.....

At the end of the day, im not letting this sour my enjoyment of the World Series.  The WS is about the players.  I can separate the 2.   I can be disappointed in a buffoon in the front office and still root for and enjoy the team.

57
Talk Zone / Re: Latest Controversy
« on: October 22, 2019, 08:37:33 am »
It looks like (1) the Astros got the facts wrong in the press release; (2) Traubman was being an ass at work and embarrassed the organization; and (3) the Stros could have diffused the situation with a simple you-misunderstood-the-motives-but-we-are-so-sorry-our-behavior-was-inexcusable, which was really the only thing appropriate. If Traubman and the Astros intended to defend Osuna they've accomplished exactly the opposite. Osuna and the Astros will never be able to walk away from the domestic violence storyline now.

So much this.  It is amazing that people who are clearly brilliant, can be so fucking stupid.  I dont know if this is a case of someone being really smart in one area and really dumb in another.  Or just an issue of pettiness and spite.

58
Talk Zone / Re: Latest Controversy
« on: October 22, 2019, 08:31:59 am »
They didn’t need to apologize, especially if they felt the reporting was unfair.  But the Absolute last thing they needed to do was blast out of some Trumpesque Fake News BS press release.

Simply say something along the lines of, we are aware of a report of inappropriate behavior of an Astros employee, we will launch an investigation into the veracity of the reporting.  If it turns out to be true we will respond appropriately.

I’ll wait for more info to arise before making my final decision on what happened and whether someone should get fired.

I lean towards the reports being more right than wrong.  There is a culture in the astros front office that they shouldn’t be questioned. Luhnow and company have been harboring ill will over the media having the gall to call them out over the Osuna trade.  It’s been festering for awhile now.

If it is simple as that, I would gladly pay the price.  I doubt that is the case though.

Not sure how many follow what Arthur Blank has done with Falcons and events at the MB Stadium in Downtown Atlanta.   Cut prices for concessions back to early 90s or even 1980 prices.

prices include $2 for a Coca-Cola in a refillable cup; $2 for a hot dog, a pretzel or popcorn; $3 for waffle fries, a pizza slice or nachos with cheese; and $5 for a Bud Light or a cheeseburger.

While the team saw direct monetary benefits from this innovative approach to food and beverages (in the form of a 16% increase in fan spending on F&B despite a 50% price reduction compared with their last season in the Georgia Dome),

The owners and their bullshit concession prices hit the tipping point for me a long time ago, I just simply refuse to buy food at the stadium any longer.  A couple other teams are adopting Blank's Falcon pricing and are all making more money because of it.

Yes

Had a debate about this topic last night when we saw the weather report.....

Everyone agreed games 4 & 5 are now likely to be played on Thursday/Friday.  The question was would they bump back games 6/7 (if needed).  The answer is no.   If Wednesdays is wiped out it means, 4/5/6/7 are played with no off day in between.

Looks like a storm is brewing b/w DirecTV AT&T vs ESPN.   ESPN set to go black at midnight, so no college football tomorrow.  Im finally to the point to cut the cord.

I live in Houston, my #1 priority is finding a service that I can still watch Astros games live.  It appears that is the case with Fubo.TV   Are there any other options?

Also, I have 3 TVs, who do I get them to play a streaming service?  One is a Vizio with their built in chromecast stuff.   The others are not smart TVs.   Lastly, would I need to up my internet plan?  Never have a problem with data limits, cause I dont stream much.

Scoring question.   It says you get 6 points for a kick or punt return.   Is that just for your team defense, or if you have a WR that also returns kicks, would he get points for it?

Best ballpark I have been to.

Was trying to go this weekend. Normally flights from IAH to BWI are dirt cheap, usually $240-$330.  For whatever reason they were near $600.

After this ridiculous heat we have been having, booked a flight for San Fran next week to watch the Astros A’s and check off the final west coast stadium I haven’t been to.  High in Oakland is like 68 degrees.  Can’t fucking wait.

I'd go, 2019, 1998, then 2004

2019 v 1998
1st Bagwell vs Gurriel.  close to a draw, which is crazy to me, slight edge to Bags
2nd Biggio v Altuve, As of now its 1998 Biggio.
SS Gutierrez/The Viz vs Correa.  Correa
3rd Spiers/Berry vs Bregman, Bregman
LF Alou vs Brantley, Really close but Alou
CF Carl vs George, George
RF D Bell vs Reddick, D Bell
C Ausmus vs Chirinos, Ausmus
DH anyone vs Yordan.  Yordan

With no more Aug 31 deadline, this is pretty much who the Astros will be, hopefully taking to the post season.   The list is currently at 26.

Chris Devenski
Zack Greinke
Will Harris
Josh James
Collin McHugh
Wade Miley
Roberto Osuna
Brad Peacock
Ryan Pressly
Hector Rondon
Aaron Sanchez
Joe Smith
Justin Verlander
Robinson Chirinos
Martin Maldonado
Jose Altuve
Yordan Alvarez
Alex Bregman
Carlos Correa
Aledmys Diaz
Yuli Gurriel
Michael Brantley
Jake Marisnick
Josh Reddick
George Springer
Myles Straw

In terms of pitching, I think anyone not named Pressly or Osuna is going to be fighting for that last reliever spot.

30 years ago, I was staying in a downtown St. Louis hotel that was within walking distance of the stadium.  The Cards were playing the Astros.  Since the game was not on local TV and I was too cheap to buy a ticket, I walked by the stadium during the game while listening to the game on the radio.

Suddenly, the gates were opened and there were plenty of seats!!!  Turns out the gates were opened each night during the bottom of the 7th inning, apparently allowing walk-in traffic!  Returned the next night, enjoying the last 2.5 innings of two Astros wins!!!  It was great and the price was right!

Have you ever heard of another ball club that allows or did offer this freebie?  Surely, much depends on the neighborhood, but St. Louis was great!

They used to do it at Minute Maid.  I did this a bunch in the mid 2000s.  Pound cheaper beers near the park then walk over if it was a good game and walk in for the last 2 innings.

From mlbtraderumors.com

4:03pm: The Mets “want to move” Syndergaard in a trade, a rival evaluator tells ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (Twitter link).  The feeling amongst many outside evaluators is that the Mets are “fully intent” on dealing Syndergaard.  As to The Athletic’s Marc Carig hears from a rival executive, the asking price on Syndergaard is something in the range of a top-30 prospect “and a couple of other solid pieces.”

I dont get it.  Im sure there is a reason for DFA'ing Kemp instead of sending Straw down for a month, but on the surface it doesn't make much sense, to me.

With Correa, Diaz and Bregman, all vastly superior at SS than Straw, its not like he is gonna get much of, if any PT there.  Seems like a month in RR getting reps at SS and at bats, would have been more useful for Straw and they could have kept Kemp around.

Either way, Straw down for a month or DFAing Kemp, neither is likely to have any impact on the playoff race.  So whats the point in jettisoning Kemp right now?  Guess we will find out in the next ~7 days.

AJ has been committed to giving guys scheduled rest days.  I bet he finds ways to work Straw into the lineup, or at least into games as a PR/defensive substitute in the OF.   And no, he's not as good a defensive CFer as Marisnick.   Note that similar to personal catchers, JVs personal CFer is Jake.

The odd man out seems to more likely be Kemp, but if he isn't traded before the roster crunch then Straw could go down since he has options and TK does not.

Why does kemp need to be the odd man out?  Send Straw down, since he has options, when Correa returns.  keep Kemp on the roster so you don’t lose him.  Let Straw spend a month in the minors working at SS and bring him back up when the rosters expand in September.

Kevin Goldstein joined the Astros on Aug. 31, 2012, and was named Director of Pro Scouting in January 2014.

In addition to consulting with the General Manager on trades, free agent signings and other baseball transactions, Kevin oversees the Astros pro scouting efforts, which includes comprehensive scouting of both minor league and Major League players across the 30 MLB clubs as well as independent leagues and foreign professional leagues.

The less a character is picked, the more points they are worth.

Scoring is based on % of people who selected the character who dies.
10 points per death, multiplied by the % bonus.
Scoring example:
(If there are 10 people in the death pool)
7 people select character X, who dies. 10 points times 30% multiplier = 300 points
2 pick character y  who dies: 10 points plus 80 point multiplier = 800 points

In terms of #1, Tillman is the one who basically hired Applewhite.   2 is correct.  Who knows on #3, but I hope you are right.

It was clear Major was in over his head.  0-3 in bowl games, and outscored 137-51.   Here is a breakdown on Major's 2 seasons.  https://gocoogs.com/major-applewhites-dismissal/

This year he started 7-1 and ended up losing 5 of 6 to end the year, ending with being humiliated, again, in a bowl game.   I thought he was 100% coming back until the Army game, even then I still figured he'd be back because of the buyout.  Losing Briles hurt too.  Major has to be the worst coach ever in hiring assistant coaches.  If he was back, he'd be on his 3rd OC and 3rd DC in 3 years.  All but Briles getting fired for being absolutely terrible at their job.

Aside from his abysmal record in hiring coaches, he was a zero when it came to energizing the fan base and promoting the program.  An absolute vanilla wafer.  The antithesis of the previous coach.

I'd love to add a bat, but Im good with Springer, Bregman, Altuve, Correa, Reddick, Brantley, Guriel, DH, Catcher.   A lot depends on CC coming back healthy and hitting again.   Give a couple of young guys a shot at DH in a lower pressure spot like 8th.  Plus Jake will get plenty of time, and then one of the other OFs can DH on those days.

The rotation on the other hand absolutely has to be addressed.

Says the man who likely knows something. So what is the plan?

Diaz was his replacement.  Unless the market absolutely crashes and they could sign Marwin on a really short reasonably priced deal.  Keuchel coming back is much more likely than Marwin.

I think everyone pretty much has it right that the plan is to add a starter and be done with it, for now.

If the Texans beat the Jags, they will host the winner of Indy/Ten.   If they lose they play at the winner of Indy/Ten.   There is also a chance they could get a bye, but that involves the Pats and Chiefs losing to the Jets or Raiders and the Chargers losing to Den.

All I see so far is an offseason going very badly.

Keuchel and Marwin are good as gone - at least that was expected.
Morton's departure is a crucial blow and the alternatives in the market for the rotation are dwindling rapidly.
Chirinos does nothing to reassure me at the catcher situation, and I didn't consider Stassi's audition for the full-time gig a success.
We just lost two decent prospects to Rule 5.

Convince me this offseason is going better than I think, because it seems pretty damn bleak so far.

Dont forget we lost like half of the front office....

Speaking of rules, was chatting with someone who thinks there a possibility of some tech getting introduced into the game. As in a way for pitchers and catchers to communicate without having to worry about other teams stealing signs.

She said that all teams are using tech to steal signs.  It’s becoming a real issue.  She said at least one of Maldanados passed balls In the playoffs was due to a cross up, because the signs have become so ridiculous due to knowing other teams are using new means to steal signs.

Said it could well be addressed at the winter meetings.   Had this conversation about a month ago, but hadn’t heard or read anything about that since.

It’s almost impossible to unpack everything that happened yesterday.  And that’s if turns out the Deutsche Bank raid (who was lending trump money) and the late law firm who represented Trump for 15 years who was also raided by the feds, just happened to be wild coincidences and had nothing to do with Trump.

Now Trump is finally admitting (to what anyone with a lick of sense already knew aka non Trumpkins) that he did in fact have dealings with Russia during the campaign.  He had the dealings, with a bank that is a
Sanctioned by the US government and illegal for US citizens to do business with AND while the Russian government was busy stealing data from US politicians and conducting a campaign to effect our election.

WITCH HUNT

It's been speculated that Manafort's flip might have been planned with Team Trump.  Once he was convicted of 8 counts in a federal court in Virginia, he was going to need a pardon to stay out of jail.  So why not plead to everything else and get an inside look at what Mueller has, report it back to Team Trump, and then get a pardon? Well the reporting back part was done and Trump, today, when asked about a pardon, said it hadn't been discussed but was on the table.

Did Mueller just get played?

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/11/fox-news-legal-analyst-stunned-at-how-mueller-made-it-impossible-for-trump-to-save-manafort/

Quote
Fox News legal analyst stunned at how Mueller made it impossible for Trump to save Manafort

On Tuesday, Fox News judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano revealed to host Shep Smith that Special Counsel Robert Mueller acted strategically to block President Donald Trump from pardoning Paul Manafort.

It is unclear exactly what he lied about, but Napolitano explained that Mueller designed the plea agreement in such a way that it is “pardon proof.”

The guilty plea is 175 pages long. In my career, I have never seen one like this. It was so carefully crafted by Bob Mueller and signed by Paul Manafort, that at the time he pleaded guilty to the charges he was indicted for — which was basically bank fraud, money laundering, and some form of commercial bribery of foreign officials in federal court. He also pleaded guilty to uncharged state crimes in New Jersey, in Virginia and in California.”

He added, “Why did they do that? To make it pardon proof so if President Trump, which he can do, does pardon him for the federal crimes the state prosecutors in those states already have his guilty plea.”

Judges being voted on,  by folks who know nothing about them, seems absurd.

How is the average citizen supposed to know/understand who is and who isn’t a fair local judge.

I don’t know the answer, but there has to be a better way to put people on the bench. I’d be curious what Texas lawyers think.

I also wonder how many folks realize a judge doesn’t need a law degree, which is equally dumbfounding to me.

That makes sense and if you resign Marwin, then there ain’t much room to add a bat.  Give Tucker a shot for a bit and then make a trade in season if needed.

And an article on Maldonado

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/astros/article/Inside-Martin-Maldonado-s-love-affair-with-13300935.php

I loved the quote from Hinch:

Lance McCullers Jr. surmised that any delivery time under 1.3 seconds suffices when Maldonado is on the mound.

If not?

“He’s like an emergency button,” Collin McHugh said.

Patrolling base stealing is but one facet of neutralizing a running game. Secondary leads shorten when Maldonado catches. Without that extra step or two, advancing on shallow base hits becomes arduous. Teams second-guess hit-and-run calls, too, cognizant of their fate if a hitter does not execute. A would-be base-stealer is hung out to dry.

“The cop doesn’t have to pull you over, he just has to be there and you’ll slow down,” Hinch said. “It’s the same thing.”

Last year they expanded the BP to 9 players for the ALCS and WS.   If we were to make it that far, I'd suspect that's when LMJ gets added.  If James makes the 12 man staff, then the options for the ALCS would be Harris, LMJ & Devo.  I'd take LMJ out of that group, if healthy.

So if they carry 12 pitchers in the ALDS, like last year. JV, DK, CFM, GC.  8 relievers Osuna, Pressly, Rondon, McHugh, Peacock, Sipp, Smith  seem like locks to me.   That leaves one spot for James, Devo, Harris.  I’d go James.

Also, what’s the latest on McCullers?

They also believe Donald Trump, the life long huckster and moron, is actually faking all his witch hunt narrative and is working in conjunction with a Mueller to bring down Hillary.   Just let that marinate for a minute.  At what level of idiocy do you have to be to even fathom that as a possibility.   We are talking sub 60 IQ.

I'll bite. I personally love what President Trump has done and continues to do. I love the make America great and the resurgence of American excellence. We're the greatest country on the globe, and we should pay hardball with our enemies and not let friends take advantage of us. The economy is doing great. We got a tax cut, and another one is promised soon. I love Justice Gorsuch and can't wait until Judge Cavenaugh is confirmed.

I don't quibble with most of what you all write in your little pathetic liberal echo chamber, but I read it all. You guys are delusional. The Republicans are going to hold onto control of the Congress. Resume your attacks. You're tilting at windmills. The bottom line is that the current iteration of the Democrat Party has become a marginalized, obtuse party of no without any real good ideas to advance the country. The Democrat Party is the party of Planned Parenthood, Antifa, gun control and the socialist resistance movement. One thing is clear, and that is the rumblings of civil disobedience and rioting are nothing to be taken seriously. Very few libs are armed with anything more than a megaphone, while ther opposition is armed to the teeth. I like our chances.

I figured you were reading.  All your nonsense aside, what are your thoughts on the QAnon stuff.

The Q Anon guys that Navin likes so much are apparently experiencing a sort of existential crisis. Cohen's flipping (which ought to be illegal, really) casts into doubt their central thesis which is that Mueller is actually working WITH Trump in order to bring down a global child sex trafficking ring. It's starting to dawn on some of these folks that maybe Mueller isn't really working hand in hand with Sessions and Trump after all.

Of course after experiencing a crisis of faith many believers discover their faith rejuvenated and deepened. We can all hope for such a happy outcome in this worrisome case.

LOL, the QAnon folks are my favorites!  I never imagined the fucking morons who fell for the Jade Helm bullshit could sink 392 times lower, but they proved me wrong.  These people make flat earthers look rational.  There is one theory out there that Sacha Barron Cohen is behind the QAnon stuff as a troll job.  While Im sure that isn't true, but if it were it would be the greatest troll in History.

To Chuck's point about the Q conspiracy breaking down with the Cohen news.  Some of the still believing dolts have hypothesized that the (unnamed) "candidate for Federal office," that Cohen paid off Stormy Daniels for was.....wait for it.....wait for it......you probably have it figured out by now.......that candidate was....HILLARY CLINTON!

ROTFLMAO.  Honestly, I feel like they are actually trolling us, because there is no chance anyone could actually believe this shit.

And speaking of QAnon, guess who stopped by the White House today and met the President.   Yep, a guy pushing the QAnon horseshit.  Unreal.

That's my "wait and see" position as well.  When you fuck up, particularly in such a reprehensible way, it's on you to actively and constructively to try to make the world a better place.  It's a lot more than just keeping your head down and not being a "distraction."

Exactly, in situations like this, second chances should be earned not handed out.

Talk Zone / Re: Astros just acquired Osuna
« on: July 31, 2018, 10:21:57 am »
Not a fan of this at all.  If what I’ve heard about the incident is true, things probably get worse down the road.  Just seems really unnecessary to ad a distraction like this to the team.  I’m all for 2nd chances, but beating up harming women is a lot different than DUI, drugs, theft, etc...  you got some real issues if you are getting violent with a woman.  Issues that probably mean you need a year or so off and getting real counseling/help.

Hopefully Osuna comes in, says the right things and more importantly does the right things.  Donating a bunch of his time to local DV charities would be a good start.

377
Remember how Republicans for decades relentlessly shouted/preached/campaigned that they were the party of family values and fiscal responsibility?  They have now admitted they were lying the entire fucking time, which of course anyone with an ounce of sense knew all along.   It’s just shocking to see them so gleefully promote their hypocrisy.  Sad!

I don't know if they archive that or what but if any of you have to know-how to pull that up you should. He had a very  heartfelt answer to what an incredible thing, it would be to make the all-star team, because he's never really been very close and doesn't know how many other chances he'll get.  So happy for him.

You nailed it.  Was telling my wife about that same interview this evening.  Was really happy hearing he made the ASG today because you could tell how much it meant to him.

379

For the love of god, how can you be this ridiculous?  At some point don’t you feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football only to have every conspiracy you are told about, yanked right from you?

I could not possibly disagree more. He was at second before Odor threw. One from the mound, two from the field is the rule, which the third base ump correctly applied.

Jim I remembered it that way as well,  but if you go watch the replay Altuve hadn’t touched 2nd when Odor releases the throw.

The 2 I seem to misunderstand the most were on display last night.  Replay and bases awarded on a ball thrown out of play.

I thought a ball thrown out of play meant 2 bases, Altuve was on second when the ball went in the dugout, but was only given third.

Replays I’m just lost. I thought you got 1/2, yet somehow Bannister lost three of them.

Eric Anthony and Cameron Drew

Totally forgot about Cameron Drew, that is probably one of the first prospects I was excited about, I wondered what happened to him.   According to Wikipedia

"Cameron Drew (born February 12, 1964) is an American former professional baseball player. He made his Major League Baseball debut on September 9, 1988. Previous knee injuries limited his major league career to seven games.

Drew was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 1st round (12th pick) of the 1985 amateur draft after starring on the University of New Haven baseball team.

Drew collected numerous awards in his brief rise through the minor leagues and was tapped by many scouts at the time to be a superstar. After a seven-game stint during a September 1988 callup, Drew was forced to retire when it was determined that his basketball-damaged knees would never hold up to the rigors of a Major League Baseball career."

I’m fine with the rule, especially once I read this part

There are mound visit exemptions
There are, of course, exemptions to the mound visit rule. The following does not count against each team's mount visit total:
A pitcher-catcher conference between batters.
An infielder goes to the mound to clean his spikes during rainy conditions.
Any visit involving a potential injury.
Any visit after a pinch-hitter is announced.

So the rule only applies to visits during at bats.  Between hitters it doesn’t apply. I’d think ditching the rules after the 7th inning and during the playoffs would be something worth considering.

While people are discussing trading McCann, it might be helpful to note he has a full no-trade clause in his contract.

http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/houston-astros/brian-mccann-29/

The chances to him waiving that, to go to Miami are slim to none.   Now if you could work out a 3 team trade where he ended up with the Braves, sure, he has stated he hopes to end his career there.

From MLBTraderumors.com

The signings of Joe Smith and Hector Rondon may end up being the Astros’ biggest moves of the offseason, though MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart feels the team could still add another starter or a left field candidate.  It isn’t out of the question that Houston makes a big play for Archer or the Marlins’ Christian Yelich, especially if the team could do so without moving either of Kyle Tucker or Forrest Whitley, McTaggart feels.

I doubt Luhnow would be any quicker to do this then with Quintana. From a prospect standpoint Verlander was a steal.

And he had to be goaded to make that deal.  I can't imagine Luhnow giving up either Tucker or Whitely to acquire Archer.   I'd guess he'd be willing to do something like Bukauskas, Martes and a lower level guy.

Arrieta - ERA - WHIP - IP
2015 - 1.77 - 0.865 - 229
2016 - 3.10 - 1.084 - 197
2017 - 3.55 - 1.218 - 168

He turns 32 to start the season, wants 4+ years $100+ million.   Doesn't really seem like the kind of guy Luhnow would go after.

I read another report on Twitter (yeah, I know) saying the Astros have inquired on Gerrit Cole.

I find it interesting (if true) that the Astros are looking at a top of rotation starter.  Would seem to show how likely the Astros think it will be that they will resign Keuchel.

I would personally like to see Astros go after Yelich.

As I told my dad, I hate to see the Astros now having to face him all the time, but I'm glad I'll get the chance to see him a lot. It'll be fascinating to see how well he does, and how often he pitches and hits.

I assume this means that Pooholes will play 1B a fair bit while Ohtani DHs. They could play Ohtani in RF (sitting Calhoun), but taxing your best pitcher like that doesn't seem like a great idea.

Albert's last 3 years.
Year - # of games he played in the field
2015 - 95
2016 - 28
2017 - 6

Albert is basically a statue now, watching him trying to play the field more than twice a month will be fun to watch, for Angels opponents.

Even funnier, his contract
2018 - $27 M
2019 - $28 M
2020 - $29 M
2021 - $30 M

Just finished the FS1 show.  Overall well done.  Some extra camera angles not available on the broadcasts a la NFL films and some cool behind the scenes clips.

My favorite was the segment on the last out of game 7.   The shot from behind Altuve is one I hadn't ever seen.  I have watched the replay of the last out about 7,393 times, Altuve fielding the ball, cocking the ball and firing the it to Yuli, then Yuli putting hands on head mouth agape.   From the angle behind Altuve you see Yuli's mouth WIDE OPEN as soon as Altuve releases the ball.  Also the setup to that last out, with Hinch running down exactly what he was thinking, running through every player in the field and their positioning and just needing  one more damn out.

I havent followed the Ohtani drama, because I assumed the Astros weren't in it.   I have seen headlines and read the basics on him.

I assumed whoever he signed with, he'd get some ridiculous contract.  That'd be money I'd rather spend on our guys.  Then I read this from the article Astros Fan in Big D.....

"Since Ohtani will be signing a minor league contract, his initial salaries are not an issue, and Crane said he is not concerned with having to pay $20 million to get the rights to the Japanese star."

So whomever signs him, just owes a 1 time $20 million payment, then he is essentially a rookie with 7 years of club control?

The Marwin homer for the WS.

Runners up, Bregs throw in the ALCS & Yuli's homer off Kershaw in game 5.

Speaking of the incredible throw by Bregman, if you gave him 20 chances to make that out, how many times does he get it?  it was one of the greatest plays I have ever seen a 3rd baseman make, in terms of situation and level of difficulty.   Simply amazing.
