Talk Zone / MLB Rules you struggle with
« on: March 31, 2018, 10:22:53 am »
The 2 I seem to misunderstand the most were on display last night.  Replay and bases awarded on a ball thrown out of play.

I thought a ball thrown out of play meant 2 bases, Altuve was on second when the ball went in the dugout, but was only given third.

Replays I’m just lost. I thought you got 1/2, yet somehow Bannister lost three of them.

Beer and Queso / Game of Thrones Season 7
« on: July 15, 2017, 09:04:08 am »
One more sleep until S7 starts.   Im not sure how it lives up to the hype I have created in my mind.   Finally got my wife to watch after years of her pushing back.    I re-watched all six season with her in about 3 weeks.   It is amazing how much stuff you pick up on the  second time through.

Also, if any of you are interested, I run a Game of Thrones death pool.   We started last year since they were past the books.   It was a blast last season, especially when Cersei took aboot about 7 characters in one swoop in the  finale.

It is $20 to enter, we should have between, 25-40 people in it this season.   You pick 7 characters will die.   If you are interested in joining send an email to [email protected]  and I wills end you the rules.

Talk Zone / Thru ~50 games

http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/79921/your-team-is-in-first-place-but-is-there-reason-to-panic

Found this interesting, and a lesson to not count your chickens.

Congratulations, your team is in first place! What does that mean about 50 games into the season? Let’s check the standings for the past five seasons at a similar point in the schedule and see how many first-place teams ended up winning their divisions:

2016: Four of six (Red Sox, Rangers, Nationals, Cubs) won the division. The Indians were 0.5 games behind the Royals; the Dodgers were 4.5 behind the Giants.

2015: Two of six (Cardinals, Dodgers). The Blue Jays were 3.5 games behind the Yankees and Rays; the Royals were 0.5 games behind the Twins; the Rangers were five games behind the Astros; the Mets were 0.5 behind the Nationals.

2014: One of six (Tigers). The Orioles were 3.5 behind the Blue Jays; the Angels were 1.5 behind the A’s; the Nationals were three behind the Braves; the Cardinals were 1.5 behind the Brewers; the Dodgers were five behind the Giants.

2013: Four of six (Red Sox, Tigers, Braves, Cardinals). The A’s were three games behind the Rangers; the Dodgers were 7.5 behind the Diamondbacks (and in last place).

2012: Two of six (Nationals, Reds). The Yankees were 1.5 behind the Orioles and Rays; the Tigers were 5.5 behind the White Sox; the A’s were nine behind the Rangers; the Giants were 5.5 behind the Dodgers.

Thirteen teams held on to first place. That's about half of them. That history suggests that three of the current division leaders won’t hold on to their leads. What areas should fans of those teams panic about? Let’s take a look:

Talk Zone / Fun, not fun, Fun, Not fun, fun
« on: May 03, 2017, 01:52:04 am »
1st game of the season for me and the wife. Fun

Beers at 1820 to start.   Knowing most of you through posts and some in person (chuck) you'd all really enjoy 1820.

Get to the game and go check out the new CF area.  Maybe my expectations were way low, but they did a really good job out there.

Then Fiers gave up homer after homer after homer. Not fun

Moved to 109 and found some unused seats.  Of course right in front of a rangers family of 10.

Runs, Runs, Marwin grans salami.  Fun

Ranger family mostly leaves

Gregerson comes in and gags, Ranger family comes back. Not fun

Will Harris shuts their shithotles.  Fun.

Skipped food at the game and ubered to Keneallys for beer and pizza. More Fun

Speaking of fun.   I hope we aren't getting teased, cause this is 1998 Fun.

The redheaded former Astros writer was at Keneallys too, she says we need much better starting pitching.

Talk Zone / The Shift
« on: February 25, 2017, 12:22:09 pm »
One thing I have been curious about.  When teams come up with shifts, I assume (which I realize could be 100% false) they look at a batters spray chart and adjust the fielders accordingly.

I assume this is adjusted for RHP vs LHP, but how much does the type of pitcher play into positioning.   I'd think (again, could be way off) that a hitters spray chart vs say Tony Sipp would differ from someone like Aroldis Chapman.

Karbach to be acquired by Anheuser-BuschInBev
By Ronnie Crocker Updated 12:05 pm, Thursday, November 3, 2016

Fast-growing Karbach Brewing Co. of Houston is the latest U.S. craft brewery to be acquired by a global beer giant, announcing Thursday morning that Anheuser-BuschInBev is buying it for an undisclosed amount.
The 5-year-old Karbach will be part of the company's U.S.-specific High End business unit, joining the likes of Stella Artois and Shock Top; Goose Island, Breckenridge, Elysian and five other craft breweries; a cider company; and a hard seltzer company.

Ken Goodman and longtime business partner Chuck Robertson, who founded the brewery in a building they formerly used in their beer distributorship on Karbach Street, said existing management and brewers will remain in place and the company will retain much of its independence while also gaining access to the resources that will help it continue to grow.

About 50 games to go and here is where we stand

Team -Games Back - Home/Away games remaing
Toronto - +1.5 - 25/25
Detroit - 0 -27/24
-------------------
Boston - 0.5 -22/30
Seattle - 3.5 - 26/26
Houston - 4 - 21/31

All the road games is a bit worrisome for the Astros.  The next couple weeks are key.  Astros play 14 of the next 16 on the road starting tonight, 4 @MIN, 3 @TOR, 4 @BAL, 3 @PIT.    Once that stretch is done they will have 19 home games and 17 road games remaining.

If the Astros can just stay near 3-5 back, they have a really favorable ending of the season, with the final 16 games all against the As, Angels and Mariners.

Talk Zone / 3rd base
« on: April 18, 2016, 06:13:28 pm »
Valbuena has started 11/12 so far.  Valbuena hit .224 last year, and is hitting .189 this year.   He has 41 plate appearances, meanwhile Marwin has 20.   I'd personally like to see that number flipped.  I think we have a good idea who Valbeuna is, a decent 3rd base option, a solid fielder with some pop who Ks a bunch and isn't good at getting on base.

Meanwhile I think Marwin has a shot of hitting 280+, with 18+homers.  Seems that Marwin's versatility is holding him back, he switch hits and plays multi positions, so he is a great late inning option.

So if they were able to hang on and win the Premier League, where does this rank in the most unbelievable championship in team sports history.

I really can't think of anything close to it in US sports history.   Maybe the 1980 US Hockey team?  Fresno State winning the college world series?  69 Mets?  But none seem to be as unlikely as this Leicester City story.

For those who have followed soccer much longer than I, is there a precedent in European soccer for something like this happening?

Talk Zone / Defensive Metrics
« on: September 30, 2015, 03:54:16 pm »
In a article Ken Rosenthal just posted, breaking down the award races, this caught my attention in the Correa vs Lindor section:

"Lindor’s defense, meanwhile, is far superior to Correa’s, according to the metrics. I don’t necessarily trust defensive numbers over a sample of fewer than 100 games, but when the gap is this large . . ."

Unless Rosenthal is being hyperbolic, Im sorry, if a metric says someone is FAR superior to Correa in the field, it just isn't a good metric.  To me far superior would be comparing Ausmus' defense to Congers.   No player in baseball history has that sort of gap in their SS play compared to Correa.

Quote
Late last month, Swindon Town, a third-division club.... formally enacted some of the most extreme measures yet: In effect, the team has eliminated non-game-day news media access. Reporters, photographers and videographers are largely barred from interviewing any member of the team, the coaching staff or the club’s management

Lee Power, the Swindon owner, who put the policy in place.... defended the policy because, he said, “at the end of the day, the local paper needs the football club more than the football club needs the local paper.”

Mr. Power added that he had been displeased by coverage of the club’s activities — including a court battle over its ownership — and did not deny that that had been a significant factor in his decision.

“The local paper and the football club haven’t seen eye-to-eye on a number of issues over the years,” he said. “As the owner, I didn’t think they were very supportive of the club, and I’m not here to sell newspapers; I’m here to do what I believe is best for the club.”

I can only imagine that Goodell and his goons would love to do something like this.

I wonder how long until US based sports start taking this same, “at the end of the day, the local paper needs the football club more than the football club needs the local paper.” attitude.   Seems like we are on that trajectory.

On the current roster, guys they wouldn't consider trading; Springer, Singleton, Altuve.  McHugh and Keuchel?

So who do they have that they could get something decent in return?
Fowler, to make room for Spring in CF?

http://www.soccerbyives.net/2014/05/concacaf-announce-centenario.html

The 2016 Copa America Centenario will be held in the USA, it will feature all 10 CONMEBOL members, plus USA, Mexico and 4 other CONCACAF teams.  The tournament will run from June 3rd to June 26th.

The Copa will be played at the same time the Euro tournament is played.  All the Copa games are said to be played in prime time in the US.  So that means for a straight month you will have European games in the morning early afternoon, then Copa games in the evening.

Reliant stadium is one of the stadiums that is being speculated to host matches too.

I can somewhat understand getting miffed at a guy trying to bunt for a hit in the 9th inning of a 8 run game.  But to get so mad, that you try to bean a guy, for attempting to bunt in the 1st inning?  WTF.

Im not sure Porter makes it through the season, there are rumblings in the background.  Maybe the team stinks so bad that there is no point in firing him, but I can't see him being the manager next season.

"Porter tells team actions were “disrespectful”

When manager Bo Porter addressed the Astros pitchers and catchers on the field prior to Wednesday’s workout, he could be overheard raising his voice and telling his team they’re actions were “disrespectful.” Porter was asked about the incident following the workout and said it stemmed from the daily 9 a.m. ET meeting, which he calls a “synergistic chemistry lab” for the players. Seven-time Cy Young award winner and Astros special advisor Roger Clemens was visiting camp to speak to the club and not all the players were ready."

Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, who is a special assistant with the Astros, has worked with McGrady on his pitching.

Former Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy told a television audience on Friday night that his “sources” tell him McGrady is throwing 90-mph and is likely to pitch for an independent team.

“He’s not there yet,” Clemens said via text when asked if McGrady had a chance to pitch for the Skeeters. “(He) needs more time and needs to react to live hitters and balls coming back (toward) him.”

FWIW, McGrady is still only 34.  Seems like he should be 40.

Bad news....

"Bud Selig wants a Mariano Rivera-esque farewell tour of all 30 MLB parks this season"

"I want to talk to season-ticket holders and fans," he said. "I've got a lot of people to thank."

That idea came about, he said, in part because several clubs reached out to him after his announcement and asked to honor him, but also because Rivera's farewell tour got Selig to thinking about ways to connect with people who love baseball.

"I like that," Selig said. "I like talking to people. And ... that's what I want to do: [speak to] season-ticket holders, people who work at ballparks. I just like to walk around and talk to people. I love that. I did that when I ran the Brewers. And I enjoyed it. I miss that.[/i]

I have heard several complaints about SWA's product declining, that would be in line with their score this year.   2nd to last in bump rate, 3rd to last in On Time arrivals and last in baggage handling.  The baggage thing is somewhat understandable as I am sure they handle way more than the rest of the carriers, but they mishandled more bags than Delta and United combined.

The Federal Communications Commission moved Wednesday to eliminate sports blackouts on television that have frustrated fans over the years by preventing many of them from watching their local teams.

Yes!

The change by the FCC wouldn’t end blackouts altogether. The FCC said individual teams could still negotiate blackout rules with cable and satellite operators.

Astros set the all-time MLB strikeout record after K-ing 19 times today.  They finish the season with 1535, 6 Ks ahead of the 2010 Dbacks MLB record, and 148 Ks ahead of the all-time AL record.

They also end the season on a 15 game losing streak, the longest such streak since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders.  The Spiders folded at the end of the 1899 season, a season in which they went 20-132.  That ranks as the the worst record in MLB history.

Talk Zone / Mariano Rivera's last game
« on: July 12, 2013, 01:00:24 pm »
So Mariano Rivera's career comes to an end Sunday September 29th at Minute Maid Park.  It will be for sure his last regular season game (assuming he is healthy).  If the Yanks are out of the playoffs by then, it will serve as the last time he ever suits up.

Drayton got a lot of backlash from fans over their pandering to out of town fans, Sweet Caroline, selling Yankee gear, etc.. I'm curious to what folks think is a appropriate gesture for Mariano's last game.  For arguments sake assume the Yankees are eliminated on Saturday the 28th or earlier.  If the Astros played Enter Sandman as a salute to him when he entered the game for the last time, would folks get upset?  Sold TShirts commemorating his career?

BTW, dynamic pricing is in full effect for this game already, and it looks like a bunch of tickets have already been sold for it.

Crane has said publicly that the payroll will increase significantly next year.  Assuming that is true, and you have $20-30 to spend next year to get the Astros to a reasonable team salary of ~50 million, where would you spend money?

What position(s), within that $ range would have the biggest impact?  I think bullpen would be my #1 target.

And if your interested a list of potential 2014 FAs

Talk Zone / Norris Trade or not to Trade
« on: May 08, 2013, 04:37:06 pm »
The first round of Trade deadline talk is starting.  On a list of likely pitchers to be traded, Norris was listed as the 2nd most likely to be moved.

Bud makes $3 million this year, and is arbitration eligible next year.  Any idea what he will likely make next season?  If that number is reasonable, would you be inclined to move him? If someone was offering up some ridiculous package for him, you obviously take it.  But assuming it isn't anything outrageous, do the Astros move him?

Pay article.  Basically says that when you add in national revenue, the Astros are making ~60+ million a year after expenses.  But that the paying down the debt that Crane incurred to buy the team could be/is eating that up.  If so then 30 million dollar payroll for the foreseeable future could be the Astros lot in life....

« on: June 06, 2012, 11:31:45 am »
Rob Neyer wrote a story about this website today, http://www.baseballsgreatestsacrifice.com

It chronicles baseball players who were killed while serving their country.   This being the 68th anniversary of D-DAY, this seems like a fitting place to post Joe Pinder's story.

http://www.baseballsgreatestsacrifice.com/biographies/pinder_joe.html

On January 4, 1945, Pinder was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. The medal, the nation's highest award, was received by his father from Major General Philip Hayes, commanding officer of the Third Service Command. “The indomitable courage and personal bravery of T/5 Pinder,” claimed his citation, “was a magnificent inspiration to the men with whom he served.”

Men's team just started a pretty busy stretch, 5 games in 18 days, including the start of WC2014 qualifying.

The team started really slowly under Klinsmann, 0-1-4, but since then have reeled off 5 straight including a win at Italy and 5-1 butt-whipping of Scotland last Saturday night.  The big test comes in Maryland Wednesday night vs Brazil.   Followed up with a match vs Canada and then 2 qualifiers vs Antigua & Barbuda in Tampa and then at Guatemala.

Would be nice to have Dempsey back for the Brazil match, but he may sit this one out too with a hamstring issue.

I watched the Scotland game, which is the 1st match I have seen them play since last year.  They seem to play a much more enjoyable style of play to watch now than they did under BB.  Maybe it was just cause the Scots aint very good, but the Yanks were everywhere, lots of great ball movement.  Clearly having Donovan back helped in finishing their scoring opportunities.  And that missile that Bradley launched was a thing of beauty.

Any thoughts on the progress of the team under the new coaching regime?

Talk Zone / Draft signing bonus changes
« on: November 14, 2011, 08:54:49 am »
Buster is tweeting about possible changes to signing bonuses.

Buster_ESPN Buster Olney :

Some of the broad strokes discussed in labor agreement: Ceilings for draft bonuses based on recommendations of first 10 rounds.

No team required to adhere to individual slot recommendations. If team surpasses 10-round ceiling, would be taxed 1st time.  On 2nd offense of surpassing draft ceiling, team would lose a top pick. Also: 1st-rd. compensation to disappear; negotiations in progress.

One source says there are a handful of issues still pending, but that the talks are at "the 10-yard-line."

Nothing finalized, but it appears MLB will get a system that tamps down draft cost; veteran FAs won't have to deal with compensation issue.

The Astros’ center fielder and former Braves’ top prospect was arrested early Tuesday in Tampa on a felony marijuana possession charge. "I still can’t make sense of Friday night’s one-sided deal that made a great Phillies ballclub a whole lot better.

Hunter Pence, 1-for-5 with an eighth-inning RBI single to center in his Phillies debut Saturday night, became the new right fielder and No. 5 hitter the night before for a price so low that Atlanta Braves execs supposedly are infuriated. They apparently think they offered a much sweeter package for Pence, and are whispering that Wade only will trade with his old assistant GM, perhaps because he knows he’ll be canned after the 2011 season and wants to return in some fashion to the club he GM’d from 1998-2005 without winning anything.

"He missed the first two. Weren’t strikes. I didn’t really say anything to him, and once I got out of the box, he was yelling at me, cussing me out, telling me to get the (expletive) in the box.  After I swung and missed at the third one, I cussed myself out. I didn’t look towards him. I said ‘dammit’ going back to the dugout, and he threw me out of the game. "

"It's amazing how umpires can get away with so much stuff and nothing happens to them," Hall said. "It's all about them trying to get something on ESPN punching someone out or getting their spot on ESPN. I have no idea. It's getting ridiculous. It's gotten worse over the last few years, and hopefully, somehow, someway it can be calmed down a little bit because it's a little out of hand."

Judging from the video, which you can see following the link, Hall's account of the AB sounds pretty accurate.

Long story short, he was paired with a friend of mine in a proffesional golf event this week (Hooters Tour).   he claims he played in the Astros Organization, specifically at Lexington.   I have found no reference of anyone named Steve or Steven Lyons who ever played in the Astros minors.  Anyone heard of this character?

FYI, Lyons shot a 92 in the first round and was first to WD due to tournament rules.

We replace AE with ACME ranged Tejada?   We give up our best pitching prospect?

What a disaster.   The Astros are on the hook for 13mil a year through 09 for Tejada.

So the left side of the field is Wiggy, Tejada and Lee.   Is Ed Wade building a slow pitch softball lineup?

Talk Zone / Instant Replays at the Stadium, Ensberg Homer
« on: July 27, 2007, 10:10:15 am »
I got into a discussion with someone at the park last night regarding instant replays on the jumbotron.   Specifically, the lack thereof controversial/close call replays.

I was told/heard/read somewhere, way back when, that the reason they weren't shown was because the Umpires union wouldn't allow them to, out of fear of the Umps looking bad.

Is that true, or is it an urban legend?

On Ensberg's homer, where exactly did it hit?   From the replay I have seen (online and grainy) it appears to hit the yellow padding on the rail and come back into play??  Did it actually hit the padding and then go off the facade or something?    If it just hit the yellow line, it wouldn't have been a homer, right?

I heard this while driving around and listening to the Astros post game show.   I found this on the web:

He begins with a minor league contract, and the deal will allow him to earn about $18.5 million. Clemens will start his workouts in Lexington, Ky., where his son Koby is playing in the Houston Astros' farm system.

I can understand the owner of the Lexington ball club and the fans of the Legends wanting to see him, but isnt that pretty inappropriate?

anyone catch JH on the post game show?    He was asked if he expected Roger and/or Andy to come back next season.   I expected him to dodge the question and give some bs canned answer.    Instead he stated, in rather matter of fact fashion, ?I would be very surprised if at least one of them isnt back, and I think both will be back next year.?

Of course this was before, Jason ?Henry Hill? Grimsely, new list of users came out.

Unless something happens with the banned substance issue, does anyone really think super ego Clemens isn?t coming back?     What else is he going to do?  Stay home and drive Debbie back and forth to the Hobby Lobby to buy more rhinestones for those gaudy ass hats/shirts she makes?

(for those who havent heard, Rogers agents just came out to announce Roger wont make a decision until late January, at the earliest!)

What is causing the hold up on Clemens signing?    I mean, everyone with a pulse knows Roger is going to sign with us at some point, so what the heck is going on?   Is it that Roger wants like 25-30 million, and Drayton is balking?

Or is Rogers Astrodomed sized ego just milking the drama for all it is worth?

« on: October 28, 2005, 12:59:52 pm »
I was unable to attend either of the home games due to work, had tix for last night that went unused unfortunately .    Watched both games from a hotel room, smoking cigarettes, drinking beer and refreshing the gamezone (which was very therapeutic btw).

One of the running themes in the gamzone threads was the number of double-digit IQ folks at MMP with face paint.   Basically everytime FOX showed the crowd, it was of either a SOX fan or an Astro fan with face paint.

So for those at the game, were there really that many face painters at the game?

Also, is anyone here a face painter or know a face painter (over the age of 8) that can give us some insight into to the thought process that goes into leaving your house with paint on your face?

Talk Zone / Money owed, and how high will Drayton go?
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:18:57 pm »
Does this sound about right?

Clemens* 20 million
Bagwell 17 Million
Pettitte 16 Million
Berkman 14 Million
Oswalt 11 Million

That puts the Astros at 78 million already.    Granted Drayton saw windfall profits the last two years like no other Astros owner ever even came close to receiving, but does anyone think DRAYTON will push the 90 or 100 million dollar salary level?   I sure as heck don?t.   Hell all he has to do is point to 2005, the greatest Astros season ever, as proof that sitting on his hands and doing nothing is the most prudent policy when it comes to free agency.

Basically the entire ?hot stove? league for the Astros rides on whether or not Roger signs.   If he does, Hot Stove league over for the Astros.

*After hearing AP lobbying for Clemens to comeback and knowing how competitive and the size of Roger's ego, i feel like he is coming back.

Talk Zone / My Recap of the Greatest Astros Game Ever
« on: October 10, 2005, 03:10:25 pm »
My wrap up from yesterday.

8AM alarm goes off, time to get up and head downtown to scalp tickets.

Get downtown around 9:30 AM, get a nice parking spot on the Street, at Capitol and LaBranch, for free.  Nice.   We go up to the first scalper we see, he offers us two tickets in 420, Row 4, for 50 a piece.   Done.    Instantly I feel relieved, we have tickets, in a good section, not to high up, and at a reasonable rate?.and my girlfriend bought them, Nice Nice.

We proceed to call a friend who is tailgating in front of George R Brown.   Free beers at 10 am.  Nice   Oh, and the weather is absolutely perfect.

Tailgate till noon, with our friends and some guys from Lake Jackson area who 45 going on 16.  These guys are blaring ACDC, screaming at all the passer Byers, playing air guitar to, ?To Those About to Rock.?    This would have been the highlight of any other game, and I could write 6 paragraphs on it, but it kinda loses its luster after THAT game.

Noon shows up, time to march to the stadium.   People are fairly subdued, I think it is the early start.

Once inside he juciebox, there is much more of a buzz with people chanting in concourse, the smell of 7 dollar beers and Sheriff Blaylocks nachos.   Now I have the playoff feeling.

We make our way to our seats.   They are dead even with third base in the upper tank.   We are in the 4th row, and there is an empty seat next to me.  All and all, seems like a really nice spot to watch the game.   Key word on Seems.

Well, the lady to the right of The GF is basically an over the top annoying combo of Susan Saradon?s ?Annie? character from Bull Durham and Dell Griffith from Planes Trains and automobiles.   To say she had an inane mostly inaccurate comment about every play would be wrong, this Chatty Cathy had something to say about every PITCH.   I kid you not.   I am pretty sure I have a strained orbital socket from rolling my eyes for about 5 hours straight.

We do notice that the aisle seats in the row in front of us are open, we plan to wait another inning and move.

So the game is underway, we have beers in hand and are on the edge of the seat.  Backe sets them down 1-2-3 in the top of the first.  Visions of Game 5 of the NLCS last year are dancing in my head.  Bottom half we go down quietly, same goes for the next 2 innings

Nobody shows up to claim the aisle seats, so we move out of direct talking range of Annie Griffith.   You can still hear her, but it is easier to block it out.   It seemed like a genius move on our part, until the 17th time we and to get up for the people sitting in the middle of our new row.  It was a group of 4 guys and 3 girls.  I am pretty sure they all sold their bladders to buy tickets.   I have never seen people have to get up so much.   1 of the guys went to the bathroom no less than 15 times.  I am not making that up either.    By the end of the game, I could empathize with Ausmus, since I was up and down as much as he was.

Back to the game.    They load the bases on the back of no hits, then LaDouche hits a salami.  Awesome.  There was a braves fan in our general vicinity who started celebrating like he just won the Powerball Lotto.   The guy was a dead ringer for the nerdy guy in the glasses, Cadet Douglas Fackler, from the Police Academy movie.   He was adorned with an uber gaudy Braves hat, defiantly a free bowl of soup hat, he also had a jersey tucked into his JORTS.    To say I wanted to murder him when he stood up, arms extended and let out a tarazan-esque scream, wouldn?t do my rage justice.  I felt like morphing into to the BK Killer and dragging him down Larry?s Big Bamboo and disemboweling him.

As soon as that ball cleared the fence, and we all sat with dropped mouths listening to Cadet Douglas Fackler hoop and holler, it was time to head to the concourse to load up on beers.

We got back to the seats, and I commented our only chance was to get to the crappy Braves bullpen.  It?s the middle 5th now, and Hudson had only thrown like 10 pitches.  Crap.

Bottom o? five rolls around we finally get some runners on, and come away with 1.    While it was only 1, it was really sparked the crowd.  Up till then it seemed like we were going to go down without a fight and get shutout again.  People were discussing plans for the Monday night game even.

Next three innings are up and down, with both teams getting runners on and pitching out of jams.   Until the 8th when this years Little League World Series MVP McCann takes Wandy deep.   Double Crap.

Then it started getting fun.

Ausmus walks to lead off the 8th.   I am now openly chanting and daring and pleading for Bobby Cox to take Hudson out of the game.     Bruntlett singles.   Runners at first and second nooooo-body out.   Then from the dugout emerges COX.   I am high fivin? people and genuinely starting to think we have a chance.

Then, like a Phoenix rising from Arizona, out from the bullpen appears Kyle Farnsworth.     Well you know what happened the rest of the inning.

When Berkman sent that pitch to the Crawford boxes it was really ON.  High fives and the remainder of my last beer everywhere.   I even high fived that annoying lady  and the bladderless dude sitting next to me.    Oh, and I turned up to look for Braves Fan, Cadet Douglas Fackler, and he is absolutely getting crucified by two huge Mexican dudes who are jumping up and down and pointing in his face.   I am sure Cadet Douglas Fackler wanted to take a swing, but he would have gotten a Rodney King style beat down.    It was enough to make your cockles swell with Houston pride.

Another thing of note about that inning.   Much like getting that first run awoke the crowd, as soon as Hudson got yanked, the crowd cranked it up several notches, nobody sat, and people were cheering on every pitch.   I have never been to a MLB game that I saw the pitcher get openly affected by the crowd.  I see it on occasion at the college level, but rarely in the majors.   You could see Farnsworth getting rattled and the crowd got louder and louder after every pitch he threw.

So we head to the bottom of 9, Lane, the Viz, and Ausmus due up.  I am praying they leave Farnsturd in to pitch a second inning.    He is back out, and I give us a 50/50 chance to win or tie it up.    Well, 2 up 2 down.   Up strides Ausmus, with the game on the line.   ?Uh, hey Garner, how about putting someone in with a chance to it???!!!???  As soon as those words are out of mouth Ausmus lifts a drive to deep left.   Place is going nuts.    My eyes went straight to Andruw Jones.   I saw Andruw  moving at good clip towards the wall and knew there was a chance it would get over his head.  The thought of a homer never even crossed my mind though.   Next thing I see is Andruw go up, the ball disappears for a split second leading me to think it has been caught.   Then the ball comes flying back into play off the wall.   YES!!! We still got a chance at this thing.   I hurriedly look down to pick up Ausmus to see if he has a chance to get to third.  I notice him slowing up, I think, oh well it is double? then I noticed the 2nd base ump, hand over head motioning homerun.   Uh?. what the heck just happened?    It takes a half second to register that Bradley F?ing Ausmus just hit a 2 out bottom of the ninth homer in the playoff to tie the game up.   I immediately start jumping up and down high fiving and hugging everyone in my general vicinity.

I look for Cadet Douglas Fackler but the crowd is going so crazy you cant even see him, I was secretly hoping he was being pile drived into one of the seats, or at least crying.

Well, the next full game basically went like this.    Oh crap, here comes player XYZ up to bat.   Hopefully we can hold on for just ONE more inning, not give up a run and then win the game in the bottom of the X.   This went on for 3 hours.   That and getting up for the bladderless crew to go to the bathroom.

After Wheelers 2nd inning when he was at 30 something pitches, I commented to The GF, ?Clemens is going to have to come in, he is all that is left?    Annie Griffith hears me and starts babbling how he cant pitch tonight? 2 minutes later he is up in the pen.

Wheeler gets out of another jam, then Clemens appears from the bullpen, place goes insane.    3 more innings of PRAYING to get out of the opt half of the inning, only to get completely deflated when we couldn?t score in the bottom half.

18th inning, Clemens leading off.  I tell The GF, if he hits a homer here, I have officially seen everything in baseball.   Strike three.    W T F is going on, the Braves BULLPEN sans Farnsworth has completely shut us down for going on 9 innings now.

At this point we are all so tired and emotionally drained you start getting delusional.    I was so utterly thirsty and tired, I was near insane.  By this point I have become friends with the bladderless boys and Annie Griffith.   My hands are literally bleeding from clapping so much.   I have tried every possible good luck charm, clapping during pitches, not clapping during pitches, rubbing hands together, sitting, standing, not watching the pitch, hands in front pockets, hands in back pockets, hands on head, hands over face, etc?

I figure Roger has 1 maybe two innings left in him at this point.   Your mind starts drifting to Monday, smoltz vs Pettitte and our bullpen being completely over worked.   We would need to get at least 8 innings from APe and pray that we learn how to hit Smoltz.

Then Burke lines one to left, it is tracking RIGHT towards the top of the wall, LF backs up to play the careen off the Crawford boxes?  it slips into the first row.   A combination of exhilaration and utter relieve sweeps over everyone.    I am back to jumping around and acting like a 10 year old.   I settle down just in time to see Burke rounding third and heading towards his teammates who are waiting to mob him at home.   Simply an amazing amazing experience.   Crowd stays on its feet cheering for no less than 10 minutes.

Post game beers never tasted so good.   The BUS was packed wall to wall, but that first sip of beer after sweating for 4 hours without a drink was possibly the finest miller lite ever produced.    Sweet mother of Jesus what a day.   10 hours after scalping tickets we had won the NLDS on the backs of 3 dramatic homers, we saw the longest playoff off game in 100+ years of baseball history and the first ever post season clinching game at home for the Astros.

On the way home listening to 740AM post game show, they had a montage of Astros highlights from Ash and Milos call of the game.   It was set to the song Beautiful Day by U2.   It was the flipping sweetest thing I have ever hear.   As much as Milo gets on my nerves now, hearing his GONE GONE GONE call of Burkes homer in the 18th, while Bono is crooning ?BEAUTIFUL DAY, Don?t Let it Get a way,? Darn near brought tears to the eyes?.

Talk Zone / Biggio story from the Justice Blog
« on: October 04, 2005, 01:17:49 pm »
Here's a note from John Gatlin, who is director of community outreach for Children's Assessment Center:

Saturday afternoon, I waited at the back of Minute Maid Park after the game, hoping for some autographs.

About 50-60 people waited behind barricades on both sides of the exit for Astros players. One of those waiting was the mother of a young man who had been part of the Sunshine Kids.

This mom is the kind of person anyone would want to know and call friend. She was sunny and pleasant even though she was surrounded by others who were neither of those things.

Waiting along with her husband and two children, she held a sign the family had made that read: ''Hey, Biggio, Hit One Out for Cameron.''

With most other players already gone, Biggio drove past the crowd. Traffic forced Craig to stop a short distance from the exit. Cameron's mom bolted toward Biggio like she was trying to beat out a bunt single. She caught up to Biggio's SUV and waved her sign from the sidewalk.

Biggio clearly recognized her because he left his car in park, door open in the middle of Congress Avenue, and gave her a hug then conducted a brief but intimate dialogue.

I jogged after her but, knowing what the conversation was, I chose to remain a respectful distance.

There was a point where I could see Biggio become visibly saddened by the news that he would never see Cameron again.

But Cameron's mom clearly reveled in thanking Biggio for doing what the sign had asked. Biggio had indeed homered to start the game. With many others descending on the pair, Biggio bid Cameron's mom a reluctant farewell. In my mind, this was Craig's biggest hit of the season.

I know that Craig does this kind of thing on a regular basis, but to witness something like this, unscheduled, unscripted, utterly human, compassionate, and spontaneous was, I felt, very special.
