Any word on when we will see a roster?  There are a lot of interesting guys floating around from last year's short-season squads that I am curious about.

Seth Beer batting 2nd (playing LF) in tonight's TRC opener. 3rd rounder Jeremy Pena in the leadoff spot.

19-year olds Enmanuel Valdez and Gilberto Celestino are in the 3rd and 7th spots, respectively.

The Houston Astros have released @ValleyCats IF Kyle Davis, who hit a towering HR in the 11-1 win over Vermont yesterday. Also released IFs Jonathan Matute and Ozziel Sanchez-Galan.

Davis was a 15th rounder from last year. Matute signed for $215K back in 2013 out of Venezuela.

I expect will will see a lot of releases early in the year as the drafted players come on board.  With them contracting a short season team last year, they had too many players in extended spring.  Some players were being held until they knew who they drafted and that the roster needs would be.

I still don’t understand the removal of Greenville from the system. Won’t it be a huge jump for 18, 19-year old kids to go from the GCL to the NYPL? Not to mention just the dearth of places for all the interesting players to play. Guys like Taylor Jones might not be able to stick around long enough for their breakout, in the future.

When you look at the lack of HS players drafted it makes more sense. The foreign players can adjust in the GCL for 2 years if needed.

Speaking of TJS, Chad Donato went 5 innings tonight giving up just one hit while whiffing 10 and walking 1. Thru his first 2 outings for the V-Cats, 16 Ks vs 2 BBs in 11 IP and zero ERs allowed.

Donato had his surgery in July 2016 after being drafted the previous month by the Astros in the 11th round. Made his debut last year with 10 appearances split between the Appy and GCL.

I wonder how long before he moves up to Quad Cities. The year Bregman was drafted, he skipped Tri-City, played 29 games at QC, and then played the final month+ at Lancaster. Seems like Beer is the most advanced college hitter they’ve had since Bregman.

From that BA article Duman linked to back in May:

"Garcia sits 90-93 mph and can reach 95 mph. He throws a lot of strikes and commands his fastball well, especially given his lack of professional experience. Garcia’s out pitch is a low-70s curveball, a swing-and-miss offering with big depth that flashes above-average. He hasn’t thrown his changeup much yet but he has shown some feel for that pitch as well."

Tapping the brakes a bit on those early season #s from Celestino and Valdez. "The Joe" is a hitters park. TRC has played 15 of their first 24 games at home. The home road splits for the pair:

Celestino
H .451/.509/.706
R .226/.286/.290

Valdez
H .322/.355/.627
R .150/.346/.300

It’s funny, I attended probably 10-15 games at The Joe, and it never seemed like a bandbox to me. Are the park effects really extreme? At any rate, didn’t stop Celestino from coming in at #13 on the BA Hot Sheet:
Quote
Team: Short-season Tri City (New York-Penn)
Age: 19
Why He's Here: .393/.433/.786 (11-for-28), 6 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBIs, 2 BB, 4 SO, 5-for-5 on SBs.

The Scoop: Celestino is either the best center field prospect in the Astros organization or the second best, depending on one's opinions about whether Myles Straw is a center fielder long-term. The 19-year-old has proven to be quite the base stealer in the New York-Penn League. He's swiped 10 bags in 10 attempts in 21 games. (JJ)

Whoops, just saw Nate already quoted this in a separate thread. Oh well.

36th rounder (2016) RHP Ian Hardman was released.

Newly-signed picks JP France and Jacob Billingsley added to the roster.

A couple of items regards McKenna from Mark Singelais in the Albany Times-Union:

Re the injury:
He fouled a pitch off his left foot prior to hitting the single. ValleyCats manager Jason Bell said he thinks McKenna will be OK, but will see a doctor on Friday to be sure.

Re the increased power he's shown in the early going:
"I think I'm just seeing the ball well right now, or have been the last few weeks," McKenna said before Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Lowell Spinners at Bruno Stadium. "I'm just trying to continue to get better and get the ball in the air. That's been my approach, and I have that kind of strength, I think, and bat speed to be able to do that. It just hadn't happened in college, really, and I'm starting to see what I can do hitting the ball in the air."

[Hitting coach Jeremy] Barnes said he's worked with McKenna on rotating his body better and pulling the ball more often. McKenna, a right-handed batter, has hit four of his five homers to left.

ValleyCats beat Mahoning Valley again to head to the championship series, this time by an 8-4 score. Nivaldo Rodriguez followed Brett Daniels to the mound, allowing just a run on 2 hits over 4 innings with 4 Ks. 3B Enmanuel Valdez and SS Deury Carrasco each had a pair of hits while 2B Austin Dennis went 3-4 with a pair of doubles. Dennis is 7-15 over his last 4 games.

The best of 3 series continues tomorrow.

The V-Cats eke out NYPL title with a 4-2 win in 12 innings over Hudson Valley. A pair of 18-year olds were significant contributors today. SS Deury Carrasco with a single and 2 walks in the game. Manny Ramirez punched out 6 in 2.2 IP.

3rd time in the 17-year history of the ValleyCats (all under Astros' affilliation) that the team has claimed the crown.
