Talk Zone / Astros Trounce Competition in Positional Rankings
« on: February 21, 2019, 11:00:12 am »
I don't have a link.  This is all based on what I heard this morning.

The MLB Channel on Sirius/XM has spent the last week ranking the top-10 players at each position (LF/RF combined to Corner OF) based on the votes of their hosts/analysts.  They finished with CF today.  Steve Phillips then revealed that he spent last night compiling team rankings based on the results.  If your team had the top player at a position it got 10 points, second best player got 9 points, etc.  There were seven Astros ranked:

Altuve          No. 1 2B     10 points
Springer      No. 2 CF       9 points
Bregman     No. 3 3B      8 points
Correa         No. 4 SS      7 points
Osuna         No. 9 Clos    2 points
Verlander/Cole combined in SP for 9 points (not sure where they each ranked).

The Astros total of 45 points was nine points higher than the Yankees' 36 points.  The Brewers, Cubs, and Nats were next in line.

Harper was the No 5 Corner and Kimbrel was the No 2 closer.  Signing both would only move the Nats into third place ahead of the Brewers.

. . . can't ignore the reality slapping him in the face.

Interesting to note that he assigns the #2 team in his rankings (Nationals) twice the odds of winning it all.

Talk Zone / Opening Day Starter
« on: March 05, 2018, 03:23:39 pm »
From the "Yeah, We Pretty Much Assumed as Much" department:

During his top-of-the-4th TV stint today, Hinch named Verlander the Opening Day starter and Keuchel the Game 2 starter.

Among the many interesting tidbits:  The insinuation that Hinch purposely got kicked out of the Aug 31 game in order to lobby Luhnow on the Verlander trade.

Scary quote from Luhnow on the trade:  "I was comfortable with it not happening".

Has there been any definitive statement on whether the roof will be closed for Games 3, 4, and 5?

Talk Zone / Phantom Hit-by-Pitch Last Night
« on: August 11, 2017, 09:06:37 am »
For you rules gurus:

Everyone is assuming that if they overruled the Garcia HPB, it's a wild pitch and Narvaez ends up on third base.  I'm not so sure.  Even though Narvaez clearly would have reached third base, play was stopped when Angel called it a HBP.  Even if the call is overruled, Angel still called it a HBP, meaning the play is dead and the Astros were given no chance to throw out Narvaez.  I'm not sure the whole "he easily would have made third" judgment call is allowed.

I'm also cynical enough to believe this may have entered into the decision to uphold the clearly wrong call.

Talk Zone / Tony Kemp - Exclusive Company?
« on: May 27, 2016, 03:06:04 pm »
MusicMan posed the question in the Game Zone last week, but I don't think I saw any response.

How many players have done what Kemp did, getting an outfield assist on his first defensive chance at the big league level?

Can't be many.

Talk Zone / Interesting Dibble revelation
« on: April 23, 2010, 09:50:09 am »
This morning, in the midst of discussion about the Alex Rodriguez pitchers mound spat, Dibble said that a lot of A-Rod's teammates are probably hoping the A's throw at him.  When his co-host expressed doubts, Dibble added this tidbit:  "When Bonds was on the Pirates, his teammates were constantly asking Charlton and me to drill him".

Assuming that's true (I have my doubts), is that something Dibs should have probably kept to himself?

Talk Zone / Sunday Night Trivia

In honor of Wild Dog's outstanding offseason diversions, I'll ask my favorite trivia question, and it's not that easy to look it up if you're so inclined:

What team used six different starting pitchers in a seven-game World Series?
