Interesting that Javier was added to the 40-man though. I still think he is better than BO indicates.

1. Forrest Whitley
2. Jose Urquidy
3. Jeremy Pena
4. Abraham Toro
5. Bryan Abreu
6. Korey Lee
7. Rogelio Armenteros
8. Freudis Nova
9. Cristian Javier
10. Jairo Solis
Thanks. I am a bit surprised at Pens being #3 and Lee cracking the top 10. Javier should be higher IMO.

It will always be a sore spot. Just less sore with time.

If they win another one with this team, it might become less significant in context. If this team doesn't win again, it's going to stick out forever.

Of course he was. To think that Jim Crane would give him $46,000,000 in sort of a rush technique (pledge the okay brother to get the one you wanted) is fucking laughable.
Does the same argument apply (or not) to Preston Tucker?

I thought that overall the HPU did a very good job. But he missed a few, and they came at critical times.
According to the umpire auditor on Twitter, game 7 was the worst ever. 89% or something on correct ball/strike calls. Pretty much even between the teams, but as we all saw, done of the worst calls both ways were at critical points.

... if he signs a contract that is seen as below-market, endless columns will be written about how he has done a disservice to his fellow players.  Twitter will buzz, every national broadcast will set it up for debate to fill time before, during and after the game for years.  All of that is very real social pressure ...
A couple hundred million dollars will go a long way to reducing that social pressure.  Think about that for a minute.
$200,000,000 ... that buys a lot of insulation.

Not doubting your remarks are true, but that sort of influence against the wants and wishes of the player is wrong, and turns the law and concept of agency upside down. An agent has a fiduciary duty to his principal (the player) and not to anyone or anything else.
This!

Best post on the issue yet.  This is the reality and will certainly be a significant factor as Cole weighs his options.  Boras and the union have convinced many players to make decisions which were not necessarily the desire, or in the best interest of, the subject player.
Not really.  All those things are true, but they follow the decision; they do not drive it.

If “historic payday” is the most important thing to him, ok. It certainly was not playing for NYY.
I think that may have been the original point.  He always wanted to play for the Yankees, but chose the potential payday instead.

Now he (maybe) wants to stay in Houston, but does it again boil down to the money?  Or is he at the point now where the money will be so good in the worst case scenario that he can follow his heart?  And if he does follow his heart, is it back to Houston or back to southern California?

We'll see.

Turns out I can't read: I misread both of those finals (I was looking at the spread; I blame Altuve). Still, it takes a last-second field goal to beat Kansas? That's not going to sit well.
And Herman appears to be blaming everyone else for the fact that this team continues. to be. all-world horrible in the basics.  He lives and dies by the trick plays, and he is not going to consistently beat anyone if he cannot shake that approach.

I thought he would have had as much of a chance as Springer.  I felt Reddick's advantage would have been his having played RF throughout the season.  But, if it had been caught then there would have been no Altuve HR.  Which to chose??  One would have been awesome and one was awesome.

If I’m Crane and company, I figure out a way to make it work in the Astros’ budget to sign Cole this offseason.  Do whatever it takes.  I don’t want him pitching in another uniform next season.
My hope. And if I’m Cole I would be willing to give up a little (and still make crazy money) to stay with this dynasty in the making.

If you say he's a shitty manager, then you have to admit they've done a pretty decent job succeeding in spite of him. Maybe you want to make the argument he's a good regular season manager and a lousy postseason manager. My hunch is that he's a system manager, and that he's implementing the will of Andrew Friedman.
I'll take door #1.  A good manager adjusts for situations, including the overall importance of an individual game, which does vary between regular season and post-season, but which also has variations within either.  Roberts seems consistently to be wrong-footed by the other manager's moves.  The talent on the recent Dodgers teams carries him, but he does not seem to recognize what is happening to him on the chessboard.

That's what it sounded like to me...And it's not moving guys around, it's sticking with the rotation.  Cole would go Game 1 and possibly Game 5 of the ALDS, and Verlander would go Game 2 of the ALDS and open the ALCS, if they made that far.  Whoever opens the ALDS likely will not open the ALCS. One will be Verlander and one will be Cole.  Decide who you want where.  Of course, I could be wrong.

1962 for me, which was the season before my senior year in HS. Switched my allegiance from the Pirates to the Colt 45s, and here I am. We are in the Golden Age, and long may it last.
My Dad & I played a homemade dice baseball game when I was a kid ... taught myself long division keeping stats, which in retrospect may have been my Dad's motivation all along.  It did get me an extra recess period in 3rd grade during math class, but I digress.  We each "managed" 4 teams in the National League (playing a 42-game round-robin schedule), so when expansion hit I got the Colt 45's (somehow) while he got the Mets.  That could not have been geographical, because it was the summer we moved from Michigan to South Carolina.  As a side note, an expansion team typically does a lot better in a league that is 100% based on luck.  :-)  This was also one of two years I got to see the Pirates, my favorite NL team (and my Dad's), in spring training.  (My favorite AL team was the Tigers where I saw my first professional baseball games a few years earlier.). In any case, that was the beginning of my dislike of the Mets.

A couple of years later we moved again, this time to Texas.  My Dad's Pittsburgh roots ran deep, but as a brand new Texan I continued to follow the Astros neé Colts.  Probably due to the successes in 1968, 1979 & 1984 of my "favorite teams", the Astros were always a bit in the background, but seeing several games in the Dome helped.  And I was definitely crushed by the collapse of JR in 1980.  But I think 1986 is where my "bandwagon" turned the corner and I became an Astros fan first, with only a nostalgic attraction remaining for the Pirates and Tigers.  And when the Express showed up in RR, I was among the first to buy season tickets.  I had always followed the minor leagues, but that was when I graduated from occasional bus rider to aspiring bus driver.  Since 2000 I have spent 100% of my baseball time on the Astros and their minor league system.  I barely even recognize the names on opposing teams unless they happen to be refugees from Lexington or Salem or Lancaster or somewhere like that.  I am probably missing a lot of good baseball, bit I am enjoying the heck out of this "Golden Age" ... and all the more for my time on the bus.

Exactly. I am surprised it took so long.

I am reminded of a story I heard from a high school coach. His team was facing a fire baller who could not throw his curve for a strike. So he had them practice hitting fastballs thrown from in front of the mound and laying off curveballs all the time. Simple but effective.

Taking in my first game in a while and last one this year at the Dell. Thought I would comment on a few guys I have not seen before.

The infield was solid (Tanielu, SuoerJack, De Goti & Jones. And Tucker in LF was also “old hat” (though his prospect status continues to be “exhibit A” in why I am not a professional scout. Tanielu & Jones both looked very good.

First impressions:
Bielak is good. 4-seamer @ 95 and cutter @ 92-93 with a slider and straight change both in the low-to-mid 80s. Lots of strikes and lots of weak contact. Kept his cool in a 2bd inning defensive meltdown too.

Quintana is terrible. Looks bad In each AB and worse behind the plate. Hot dogging faked PB with a runner in 3rd (though the guy only got there on a real PB). And he missed 2-3 balls every inning. His release on the throw to 2B is painfully slow. And he was the big reason behind botched defense that led to a delayed steal of home.

ETA - He did Single in the winning run in the 9th after 3 Ks.

Ronnie Dawson is still 0-for-AAA , but looks OK at the plate. He is an adventure in the OF though. He starts back on everything, then circles under it like he struggles to see it. And the one throw that mattered was a rainbow with nothing on it that gifted the batter a triple. (Same gut that later scored.)

Drew Ferguson looked good in CF and legged out a triple in the first - barely besting the throw from a right fielder with a canon. He did get run later after being rung up on an odd play. A clear checked swing followed by a passed ball (former bus rider Tyler Heinemann) and a silent appeal while Drew’s back was turned. When the throw went to first he was completely surprised.

Your question helped me understand the problem was roster-related, not player control.  Don't have enough info, time, or interest to suggest roster moves - it's above my pay grade.  Just frustrated.  It's easy to complain....

Much obliged.

Great points.  Forgot that Marisnick was JV's preference.  (Does Cole have a choice, other than the catcher?)

Agree that no matter what the bottom 1/3 did, JV was doomed by two gopher balls combined w/ the top 6 in the order not named Brantley being shut down.  It did not help that desperate base running killed a potential rally and ended the game w/ two outs at 3B in the 8th & 9th.

Did not mean to suggest that having Tucker replace Marisnick would have turned the game - not at all likely.  As much as Jack is a pleasure to watch tracking flies in the OF, it is hard to watch him waste ABs by chasing sliders, etc. out of the zone.

We were spoiled during the 1st half of the year w/ a healthy Correa (fond memories) and Reddick.  If memory serves, even Chirinos was hitting.
If you spent as much time thinking about baseball as you spend writing about it, we would all be better off.

I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid, but when they went to LA, I dropped them. That year was Elroy Face’s 18-1 year, and I started following them because of him. In 1960, I was with them from the first pitch of ST to Mazeroski’s homer to win the WS. That 1960 Pirates team was my all time favorite team until 2017.
Similar story here (except the Dodgers part).  I loved the Pirates and that 1960 team was the greatest. Saw them in ST the next year. Mazeroski & Groat (assist from my dad) taught me how to watch and appreciate infield play. And Elroy Face was one of my favorites.

My other team was the Tigers though, and 1968 was magical. The back and forth continued ... 1979; 1984. I had always followed the Colts/Astros too (expansion was a novelty to a 12 year old), but it was only the late 70’s when I came back from Germany that they began to be “my team”. Then as I traveled and began collecting MiLB ballparks I became a confirmed bus rider. Even now I would choose a road trip to Corpus over one to Minute Maid ... at least until the last month or so of the season.

I just did admittedly imperfect research and found only one game at SS in 2018. I know how infrequently he played SS at RR in 2019. No doubt he took a million ground balls and listened to instruction about playing SS, but for him to be starting at SS for the Astros and holding his own in a pennant race is an amazing feat.

They might have had the idea in 2018, but part of one game is less than minuscule for such a demanding position. He was thrown in to see if he could handle it.

Thanks for your detailed knowledge, Duman. I was not misinformed after all.

I've seen him play a few times, and he always seems to have quality ABs and plays respectable defense. But he and Mayfield have the same problem: where are you going to put them.

The Marwin comparison is your clue. You put them (especially Rojas) anywhere. Super utility makes the 13-pitcher roster work.

Rojas kinda flies under the radar but I think he will play in the MLs a long time.
The Astros seem to have a patent on the process for developing these uber-utility players.  Rojas, De Goti, Duarte, Angarita, E.Valdez, Hensley, T.Dawson, Dennis & Wielansky are all at various levels in the minors with multiple position exposure.  And even Freudis Nova,  the hot-shot SS getting his first taste of full season ball, is seeing all three IF positions regularly.

When I first saw the first and third play on which the fourth run scored, my first thought was “WTF is the SS doing?” Why did he throw home instead of turning two to end the inning?” TK said this on his pbp. Perhaps some or many of you thought the same thing. But after watching the replay several times, I changed my mind, and Stanton voiced my current opinion in the postgame show.

The catcher was the one at fault. With a runner at third and one out, he cannot assume a double play attempt and leave the plate uncovered. Think Bregman and McCann in Game Seven against NYY. The Seattle SS had to charge the ball slightly to his right and was moving diagonally away from second base. Right or wrong, he made the judgment he did not have time to stop, plant, turn, and get the DP to end the inning and to keep the run from scoring. Like Bregman in the ALCS, he threw home to cut off the run which he thought would score if he tried for a DP. The catcher had no business vacating the plate in that situation, and the runner coming from third would have been out. The SS looked foolish throwing to an uncovered base, but the error in judgment was the catcher’s.

That was my take live too. Then I let the pbp guy talk me out of it.

Excellent observation, and it is certainly in line with my thoughts as well. I've seen lots of both AA and AAA ball. AAA has become a storing place for "insurance policy" players, e.g., the third catcher, backup starting pitching, etc., while most of the real prospects are at AA.
This has been true for a very long time. Hot prospects and marginal ones fighting to keep hope alive populate AA. AAA has a few blocked prospects and a lot of AAAA insurance players.

Me too. I actually thought they might lose him in the rule 5. He looks good at all three IF positions and handles the bat well with some pop. He would at least be a valuable extra piece in a trade, I think.

There is still at least a little bit of skill involved in being a good first baseman.
Indeed. Think Dick Stuart. But almost anyone can make the normal plays, and “normal” seems to be more normal at 1B.

BTW, I did play 1B ... until my .037 batting average led to a premature retirement at about age 14.

I think that's a mis-read on what the Astros are doing.  They are trying to maximize any versatility he might have.  With the big club they want him to be able to play LF, 1B, and DH not just 1B and DH.  The more he can do defensively the more Hinch can mix and match the lineup.
Exactly ... He is not going to get any better at 1B, but he might get better in LF with more time there.  Thus the AAA duty in LF.

Did the Astros ever make an offer for him to turn down? I don’t remember one being reported. They traded for Diaz very early last offseason to replace him, so I guess it is possible he didn’t engage in discussions and the team quickly moved on. But I do not remember anything like that being reported.
I expect he made his financial demands known and the Astros moved on.

Brett Adcock finally had a scoreless outing last night, with 7 Ks through 3 IP. It did take him 80 pitches though. Meanwhile, Tyler Ivey returned from the IL and picked up where he left off - 5 hitless innings with 7 K & 2 BB to pick up the win and lower his ERA to 0.86.

It will be interesting to see who gets bumped to RR to fill Martin’s spot, but Ivey must certainly get some consideration.

I don't think anyone is disputing that Laureano could fill a similar role, it's just responding to the original comment that the Astros somehow missed the boat on him and it calls into question their ability to judge talent.  He's got value, but he's not the kind of player who pushes people out of his way, and he simply wasn't an upgrade.
Exactly.  And as one who haunts the bus ride section, I was sorry to see him go ... but more for sentimental reasons than because of anyone's inability too judge talent.  And I also like Bailey!

Only saw him in the Hooks exhibition, but he still looks stiff with a long swing to me — more like a tennis stroke. If it was something that obvious, though, smarter baseball minds than mine would have given up on him long ago.

The Hooks looked good in their win at the Dell Diamond today. Adcock started well, but was being squeezed and seemed to lose command later in his outing. Ronel Blanco was impressive, and Justin Ferrell looks to be 8 feet tall.

Stephen Wrenn made several good plays in CF and smoked a stand-up triple off Guduan.

Toro looked good at the plate and in the field. Josh Rojas handled 2B well and had a couple of quality ABs. JJ Matijevic looks very natural at 1B.

Quintana was the anti-Ritchie behind the plate and is a sutpridingly good base runner.

Well ... they did not look great in a 7-3 loss to the Hooks toddy.

Jamie Ritchie may be the worst excuse for a catcher I have seen in pro ball. He was even dropping/missing warm up pitches. I was not scoring, but there were at least 2 passes balls along with at least 1 wild pitch where he could have recovered more quickly.

Myles Straw started at SS and I am convinced that he belongs in the OF. Throws were tentative with 1 E and another safe st first due to the weak throw. Nothing like the OF cannon i saw last year.

Yordan Alvarez started in LF and made me think of Jack Cust. He made a couple of routine fly balls look way to exciting, and misplayed another into a 3-base error. He did blast a solo HR, though.

Akeem Bostick looked pretty good in the start. Reymin Guduan was bringing heat but hittable. Kent Emmanuel looked solid. Corbin Martin had a tough couple of innings, but grandad duty kept me from watching him closely.

With the posting of the MiLB rosters (still preliminary, of course) I have a few observations.

Corbin Martin (and to a lesser extent Ryan Hartman) at Round Rock (ahead of JB Bukauskas and others) surprised me a little.  There are at least six (and possibly eight) starters on the roster, so a couple of those will probably see mostly bullpen action.

It was encouraging to see Tyler Ivey at Corpus.  I was surprised to see Kit Scheetz assigned there instead of Round Rock though.  I was also surprised to see Jake Adams stay in Fayetteville, meaning that one or more of the six outfielders will be manning 1B.  I have seen reports elsewhere that JJ Matijevic is listed in the infield, so I am assuming he is the most likely candidate.  I think Chas McCormick saw a little 1B action last year, too, but I am not going to look it up right now.

Fayetteville is mostly as I had expected, though two of my questions in the other thread are answered here (Angarita & De La Cruz).  I had also expected Jake Adams to start in Corpus and Scott Schreiber here (instead of Quad Cities).  It will be interesting to see who gets the most playing time at catcher between Michael Papierski (with his amazing BB rate) and newcomer Scott Manea.  I was also surprised not to find another newcomer, Alejandro Flores, here (or anywhere, for that matter).

Quad Cities likewise held only a few surprises ... though I usually do not even try to project the pitching staff at this level.  I am a bit surprised to see Jonathan Lacroix here again, and I had thought to see the recently released Luis Encarnacion at 1B.  The biggest surprise was four catchers, none of them named Nathan Perry.  Of course, Alex Holderbach also saw time at 1B last year, so he and Schreiber may split time there.

Missing in action:  In addition to catchers Alejandro Flores and Nathan Perry, there were a few Tri-City regulars that I expected to make the jump to full season ball.  These include infielder Michael Wielansky and outfielder Ramiro Rodriguez.

Fascinating ... I was just doing my annual attempt to forecast MiLB assignments and most of those guys (and only a few others) had me completely stumped.  Luis Encarncion was the only real surprise, though I did have Carlos Hiraldo pretty confidently slated for Fayetteville.  The fact that the organization already had him at AA may have played a part in their decision ... up or out.

A few more I had trouble placing include Andy Pineda (Corpus as OF#4?), Alfredo Angarita (super sub, but at what level?), Gabriel Valdez (maybe Corpus bullpen?), Carlos Sanabria (Fayetteville? Corpus?) and Brian De La Cruz (I can't find room for him above Fayetteville, and not as a starter there; but he seems to have shown all he can show to that level).

Anyway ... all will be revealed shortly.

This place is interesting. As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a really smart Astros baseball community.
Until I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with good ole Jim R - the proverbial internet tough guy.

JR decides who has the right to speak her. He demands credentials. He needs posts to be appropriately worded.
He doesn't need anyone else to contribute. He is MR CONTRIBUTOR.

I had this crazy ass notion that being the fan of the same team made it OK for 'outsiders' to post here.

But no, good ole JR just wants to play a colossal game of dick out deciding who gets to talk Astros baseball and who doesn't.

So when I mention at 10pm at night that I saw Verlander was in final stages of contract negotiation, and I look at the headlines and don't see it
mentioned, I figured what the hell, no one could possibly find fault with me sharing that insight.

Wrong.

Good ole JR decided that he had to attack even that innocuous post. Personally.

You guys have a helluva website. And I know you are a tight knit community, so leaving this here isn't going to make any friends.

But it truly sucks that one tired, bitter old man can spew his shit with immunity.

Good Ole JR, kiss my internet loving As-tros. goodnight.
Be patient. He grows on you.

Exactly. Above average at 3B. No reason he couldn’t learn 1B. But SS would be a stretch.

Ok. I thought at one time I remembered 1B being his natural position. Perhaps next season Gurriel transitions to DH and Alvarez takes over at 1B??

DH is his only natural position. His glove is adequate at 1B but don’t count on much in the way of range or fielding bunts. In LF he will make routine flies a lot more interesting.

You took me way too literally. Toro is a switch-hitter like Marwin and provides that sort of lineup versatility like Marwin did. For a DH-type or even corner man, that makes him valuable. So, given that, I'll take back my "heir apparent" to Marwin because it probably confused many of you. I still see the value of Toro for this team with his ability to hit from both sides and eventually provide corner infield help and also be a DH option. We will leave it at that. Like Tanielu, Toro would eventually become a much better option than White in his career. I like White but I see limitations in his abilities and once the league figures out how to pitch him, he will be hamstrung to help this team at DH and as a 1st baseman, he's average at best. I won't lie, I was shocked he reported to camp looking very pudgy. Is he serious about wanting to win a job or did he think he had a spot locked up, because I don't think that was wise.
I totally missed the switch hitter component of flexibility. I agree completely. Sorry for focusing only on defense.

He's already played nearly 10 innings at 1B in games this spring.
Right. The ST experiment. 1 whole inning so far. White started over 20 games each at SS and 2B a few years ago and was surprisingly adequate. As HH noted, he is Brot an MLB candidate there bless he loses weight again, but he has the basic skills and instincts.

Talk Zone / Re: 2019 Roster (New & Improved)

White is in no way, shape, or form a Major League SS or 2B.
I agree. But he gets a LOT of PT at both in the minors. The .org at least sees versatility as within the limits of his abilities.

Toro, on the other hand, has played 3B exclusively in the minors after a failed attempt at C. His ST trial at 1B is stretching the limits of his flexibility. Not saying he couldn’t develop in that direction, but turning someone who has historically been seen as C/3B into a multi-position option like Marwin is a challenge.

Thanks for the pick-me-up. Yes on Tanielu being much more versatile on defense. All the more reason I'd personally have him higher on making the final 25 than I would Tyler White. Toro needs just more seasoning to be more consistent, but as you mentioned, he's limited like White, to two infield position at this time. But I like the prospect of his bat from both sides providing solid power contact in the future.
Umm you know that White has played all 4 infield positions with some regularity, right? And even a surprising amount at SS.

As I understand it, Tanielu's dad was born in Samoa so let's call him of Samoan descent (unless you want to go down the ethnological rabbit hole of examining the ties between Samoans and Maoris). Tanielu's only personal ties to New Zealand were having played for the Auckland team in the ABL this winter.

I like both Toro and Tanielu but as far as an heir apparent to Marwin if you mean ability to play multiple positions, I think that's probably Tanielu rather than Toro. Toro to me looks more like a 1B/3B type while Tanielu perhaps could play 4 positions (2B, 1B, LF, maybe 3B).
I agree (mostly). Toro has been at 3B exclusively after giving up at C. Corner infield is his role. Tanielu has played a lot of 3B & 2B with some 1B & OF. Definitely more Marwinesque.

Reddick will be 32 and is coming off a mediocre season, with $26m still owed for 2019-2020. I think the Astros would have to eat over half of that money to get someone to take him. It'll come down to where he's drafted in the NFL.

Baker Mayfield made around $500,000 per game this season.

Dak Prescott (4th round pick,  3rd year) made around $600,000 for the season.

That's all dictated by the CBA.  If Murray is a high first rounder he'll make serious bank quickly, and likely play quickly as well.

(This may be the lone exception where the NFL's CBA compares favorably from a player's perspective to MLB's)
Which is also why this is going on now ... NFL teams who want him may need to draft him higher to be able to compete with baseball. Or they might just do the smart thing and pass.  :)

From Chandler:

The Astros traded J.D. Davis and Cody Bohanek to the Mets for minor leaguers Ross Adolph, Luis Santana and Scott Manea.
...
Scott Manea is a catcher who was a Single-A All Star last season. Ross Adolph is a 2018 draftee, outfielder, who was his team MVP in short season ball.
These guys were apparently not the centerpieces, but solid lower-level performers who fill needed roster slots ... Manea in Fayetteville gives Nathan Perry more time to develop, and Adolph probably lands in QC where there is plenty of space.

Meanwhile, Bohanek was aging out but has a decent glove and good make-up ... he might get a look at AA or even AAA with the Mets (though I really have no idea what their system looks like).  Regardless, I wish him well.

The reason this is huge is because you're losing McHugh to the starting rotation. So Houston is losing two bullpen arms this offseason. Do they need to sign an arm? Not necessarily, but it does mean Peacock is now going to be depended upon more often as a bullpen arm aka 2017. Maybe Rondon and Harris as well. Use a young arm in the long relief man role and you don't need to panic... just yet. Maybe at the trading deadline though. Hence why you need payroll flexibility.
Color me optimistic ... there are a bunch of guys in AAA that could fill a bullpen role effectively IMO.  Guduan, Deetz, C.Perez, Rodgers, maybe McCurry among others.

...and, 200+ innings.  Although, since it was a walk year, I'm sure he would have pitched until his arm fell off to make that number.

I was thinking about him a bit yesterday.  I'm not convinced that his performance last year was decreasing control.  He lives (and dies) at the bottom of the zone so much and his big bump and BAA and # of hits (highest in all of the AL last year) can probably be explained away by him coming up (and ever so slightly in) in the zone.  His heat maps are not representative of someone loosing control (overall diameter increase, significant increase in core diameter) but instead shows a tightening of the core.  Instead, they indicate an intentionality to go a bit up and in.  I'm wondering if this is 1) because he's lost the bottom of the zone to the umps (no longer getting the benefit of the doubt 3 years removed from his Cy campaign) and 2) trying to jam the uppercut swingers inside.  He did a good job on #2 but the soft contact dribblers generated by #1 were death by 1,000 cuts.

This sounds very reasonable. Thanks for the observations/speculations.

Like Kemp, White is out of options. If they're both on the OD roster, then you're making the bet on both that they'll remain on the 25-man roster the entire year. I like both players and aren't advocating for getting rid of them but I can see a possible scenario over the winter where Luhnow trades 'em because (A) they may be at their maximum trade value (B) better to get something for them now rather than run the risk of losing them later and get nothing in return and  (C) as part of a package targeting MLB-ready player(s) to being received in return who have options remaining.
This.

« on: October 01, 2018, 03:37:04 pm »
With regard to the Rule 5 draft and the 40-man roster these players contracts are up following the post-season: Keuchel, Morton, Sipp, McCann, Gonzalez, Gattis.

Also, these players are out of options: Stassi, White, Kemp.

That's nine 40-man roster spot question marks going into the off-season with multiple players from Nate's list that could reasonably be added.
I think there is an issue with using those spots to protect guys from the Rule 5 draft if they are planning on re-signing any of the FA's.  I am a but fuzzy on waiver rules, but I recall the Pirates losing a couple of highly regarded prospects a few years decades ago by misunderstanding them.  I *think* that if anyone is replaced on the 40-man after the draft, they need to pass through irrevocable waivers ... which would sort of defeat the point of "protecting" them by adding them to the roster.

Edited to adjust the old-guy time scale.

Roster Resources has a MiLB Top 200 Power Rankings (3rd year they've been doing this) which is "based on 2018 regular season performance with age and level being major factors in how each statistical category is weighted". Astros' minor leaguers on that list that don't show up elsewhere:

  • 67. INF Josh Rojas
  • 106. LHP Ryan Hartman
  • 127. 1B Taylor Jones

https://www.rosterresource.com/milb-power-rankings/
Thanks for posting this.

As a reaction to the piece, though, I am suspicious of pure-stat analyses in MiLB - especially below AA. K rate and B.B. rate are good, but even there a pitcher trying to master a new pitch will suffer by comparisons. I find these lists fascinating but not always helpful in predicting progression up the ladder.

Wrongly, of course (milb.com still has never reflected the offsetting roster move). Bukauskas for BC today wasn't at this best with too many walks (4) in 5 IP though he whiffed 8. He also gave up a gopher ball, just his first allowed in 53 innings this year.
Looks like his offense bailed him out with 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st and he settled down after that.

The club dropped the season finale today to finish one game under .500.

The only player of note offensively was SS Freudis Nova who finished .308/.331/.466. The team OPS ranked next to last in the 18-team league.

Like every other affiliate, the pitching staff were the stars ranking 3rd in the GCL with a 1.30 WHIP. Besides 2nd round pick Jayson Schroeder (who walked 9 in 18 innings), a trio of 17/18 year-old Dominican righties are probably the names to know. Manny Ramirez had a 46/15 K to BB in 34 IP. Previously-noted Ernesto Jaquez finished with 70 Ks vs 14 Ws in 53 combined IP between the GCL/DSL while allowing just 19 hits. And Alfredi Jimenez's numbers in the DSL/GCL weren't too far behind: 55.1 IP / 35 H / 13 BB / 63 K.
And Ramirez promptly up to TC where he pitched well tonight.

Some of Springer’s swings the last couple of games he played definitely looked uncomfortable. Because of that, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was true. One the other hand, if he is hurt this badly why not go ahead and DL him rather than playing a man short on the bench in the middle of a tight race???? So how true is this article??

I’ve spent the last 24 hours wondering how they are going to get McCann on the active roster when he is ready. For a team that overall is struggling offensively, I think it would be really difficult to send either Kemp or White back down. Unfortunately, Springer to the DL may be the way it happens.

Those players first had to perform.  And they did.  I believe part of the drafting philosophy had to do with the reduction of the two rookie ball teams.  The GCL team was going to be loaded with young international players.  There wasn't a need or place for many high school draftees.
This.  And further, I wonder whether the elimination of Greeneville was the driver for the change, or whether it was the result of all the work they are doing internationally.  There may have been a deliberate decision to reduce the emphasis on lower round, "high ceiling" (?!) high-schoolers, allow a lot of these talented latin players to compete in the GCL, and draft more older players who start at Tri-City.

Also, I have tracked month-by-month playing time for Astro minor-leaguers since the AA team came to Round Rock.  This year has (by far) more pitchers on individual team rosters than ever before.  Some of that is a huge increase in releases (driven by higher quality in the org top to bottom) but a lot of it is driven by promotions (filling the roster spots of the released players?).  There is similar upward mobility among position players, but  not as pronounced a departure from the past.  It seems like the message these days is "move it on up" ... produce here and there will be room at the next level.

Another thing I have noticed more of this year is the "fill in" promotion that skips levels ... Cody Bohanek, Alfredo Angarita, Luis Encarnacion all spring to mind, but there have been others.  And in Bohanek's case, he ended up earning a "normal" promotion after he came back down to QC.

My point (if there is one) is that the "brain trust" seems to be deliberately changing the way they direct the whole organization in ways that are discernible, but not transparent. They seem to be playing chess instead of darts, and I see that as a good thing.

Not particularly informative but a QC Times profile of recent draftee Marty Costes:

“He has shown an ability to make the most of his at-bats,’’ Storey said. “He gets on base, one way or another, and that’s a good trait for a young player to have.’’

I have been really disappointed in Davis.  I really think he has the tools and ability to hit at this level, but he just hasn't.  I hope it's not attitude or coachability (see Wallace, Brett).

He's already been through it once and not picked.  I will argue that because his bat isn't that great there may be a number of guys at the AAA level like him.  If that's the case it reduces the likelihood of him being picked.  Being 28 at that time won't help him either.
You are probably right. He seems to have found his Rhythm this year, though, and he was doing well last year before missing time with injuries. He might be another David Matranga, though.

5 scoreless frames for Kent Emanuel in his spot start tonight. FWIW, this year:

As a starter:  33.1 IP /   24 H / 6   BB /  31 K  / .198 BAA  / 0.90 WHIP
As a reliever: 34.0 IP /  57 H / 11 BB / 37   K / .370 BAA / 2.00 WHIP
Yeah. That attempt to turn him into a Loogy as a fast track to the show did not work out as expected.

Given that these guys would have to stick on a 25-man roster I would flip Riley Ferrell and Randy Cesar.

Otherwise Luhnow's got his work cut out for him.
Agreed. Cesar’s defense is suspect-to-poor, too.

A guy I would bump up the list is Jack Mayfield. Solid defense at all three IF positions and good bat control with a little pop. Missed some time with various minor injuries, but could be a nice utility pick for some team with limited post-season chances and an opening at roster spot #25.

Actually a player-friendly move by the organization.  Hauschild was going nowhere ever with Houston, but is probably worth a look as an inning-eating swing man for a second-division club at the MLB level.  I will be surprised if he stays unsigned for long, and not surprised at all to see him back in MLB before the end of the season.  I don't see him with a long career, though.

Late on the draw, but I’ll weigh in anyway. Alcala is really talented, and I have not seen him pitch, but I got the feeling that he was not as dominant this year as expected. 2021 ML debut seems right, but not guaranteed. Celestine is fast and a good defender but as mentioned earlier, a very long way from ML ready. Alcala seems more replaceable with current talent in the system, but plenty of time to draft/develop additional OF help.

We may regret one or both in a few years but in the “now” this looks like a good trade for the good guys.

Seeing the thing on Perez and Tommy John surgery reminded me of something. Apologies if this has been linked to before, but some diligent soul has been keeping a record of ALL such procedures here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gQujXQQGOVNaiuwSN680Hq-FDVsCwvN-3AazykOBON0/edit#gid=0

If you're too lazy to click thru, current Astros' minor leaguers with their surgery dates:

Kent Emanuel: 6/3/15 (missed most of 2015 and some of 2016 season)
Devin Conn: 1/1/16 (while in college)
Kyle Serrano: 3/1/16 (while in college)
Chad Donato: 7/1/16 (missed 2016 after being drafted)
Jose Hernandez: 1/1/17 (currently pitching for BC after rehabbing earlier at TRC)
Brady Rodgers: 5/2/17 (back with Grizz after rehabbing at lower levels)
Joe Perez: 6/3/17 (possible setback in recovery or new injury?)
Edgardo Sandoval: 6/21/17 (rehabbing at TRC)
Jandel Gustave: 6/21/17 (still out)

I don't think that list is complete. For certain, Nick Hernandez (former Coog and 8th rounder in  2016) should be on there based on this:

And then this from his own twitter account:

So that would put his TJS having occurred on 3/27/18.
Nice sleuthing.

Yes. Framber Valdez is the #15 ranked player in our system. He’s a southpaw which may intrigue the O’s since they would be trading a lefty in Britton to us. Valdez has both started and relieved in the minors this year so he’s flexible for the O’s.

Tucker has been fairly underwhelming so far.

ETA: I realize that he's traditionally had a slow start to every new level, so it will be interesting to see how he does over time. But his swing seems a bit long, and his wrists seem stiff, like he drags the bat through the zone instead of releasing it.
That was exactly my observation seeing him in RR, but with all the scouting rave reviews, I figured that what was “obvious” to me was probably “obviously wrong”.

Should be fun.

Putting him in with a 4-run lead is not setting him up for failure.  It may not be the best use of him in the pen or situationally, but that's not his concern.  His job is to get outs.  He has to get them whether he's starting a game, closing it out, or mopping it up.
Exactly.

Good point. I'm still a believer in Davis. Don't know if they will make room for him but he will have a solid ML career I believe.
I agree on Davis.  Not too sure about Reed -- especially after I saw him in person in RR last month.

Nice reward for the great season he is having.

More than half way through the season and 6 G, 21 IP and a 4.30 ERA are not all star stats. He is deservedly a top prospect, but between the suspension and the recent ouchie, we have not seen very much yet.

No, he averages around 96 on his fastball, and has two good breaking pitches (slider and changeup).  He’s a converted starter that the Reds signed out of Cuba.  Last year, the Reds often let him get multi-inning saves because of his starting pitching background.
This sounds like it may be a “fit”. It seems that the brain trust is quietly putting together a staff where there is ample opportunity for 2-3 inning, mid-game “stars”. McHugh, Peacock, Devenski. Even the usage on the farm (6-man rotation at AAA and tandem below) along with the 13-man Staff fit. Perhaps they are combining the advantages of a second “first time through the order” with a fresher staff front to back in September and beyond?

There used to be a pbp guy on the farm everyone was very excited about, but maybe he was in Lancaster and stayed there.

Gee whiz, it’ll be nice when Correa and Altuve get back.
Mike Capps. RR.

461
Springer didn't look quite so lost tonight. Maybe he's breaking out of the slump. Bad luck with the two DP's, though. Odor taps one off the end of the bat and gets an RBI, Bregman beats the shit out of two balls and produces four outs.
I think the first DP was Altuve.

Apr .212/.253/.341
May .298/.331/.421
Jun .289/.362/.494

And 7-12 to start off July.

Currently on a 9-game hitting streak in which he's batting .472.

Yeah. I was looking at that today and thinking he had come out of his 2017 slump. He was moving toward “prospect” the previous year. Maybe again?  He does a pretty good “Marwin” when he is on.

Am I right that if Gattis is DHing that he can't replace Federowicz if he gets injured.  If that is the case, can the Astros go with having Stassi "day to day" or do they need to 10-day DL him and bring up Stubbs?  Because I don't think the Astros want to start Gattis at catcher, but they can't DH him if he is the backup catcher.

Is there anyone else on the active roster right now who can catch?
Gattis can take the field but they then lose the DH. Pitcher would bat in F-wicz spot.

466
Altuve hasn’t swung at a strike in a week.
Only about 4 inches between a double and a double play on that one, though.

467
Ancestors with the name traced to the Netherlands and NW Germany. Hard to tell where the name originated.

That was the single worst swing I've seen Altuve take, and that's saying something.
Probably Ost-Friesen then.

I would think James, Armenteros, and Thornton are the priorities of the Fresno 6, but I dunno. One or two of those may even get added and brought up in September. Ditto Whitley.
Hauschild was already lost once, and I don't expect them to protect him this year either.  Dykxhoorn is interesting, but very unlikely (imo) to stick with anyone or even be selected.  I do think your three are the top candidates, though I would place Armenteros ahead of the other two after seeing them in RR recently.  Don't confuse me with someone who knows how to scout pitchers, though.

I will add this about Kemp, ... he certainly isn’t a fit at first base, and  third base could be a stretch, but Kemp could play every other position on the field.

3B would be more than a stretch and RF would allow first-to-third on every hit.  LF & 2B is fine.  Range in CF helps mitigate his noodle arm (and there have been a lot of noodle-armed CF-ers who had solid MLB careers).  He can really only play those three positions, though.  I am glad he is on the team and doing well, but he does not have anything close to Marwin's versatility (or power).

Iran can qualify from Group B with a tie with Portugal, if Spain loses to Morocco.  Unlikely, but still a permutation.  To complicate it further, the Iran tie scenario also requires Spain to lose by 2 goals or, if it's only by 1, Iran has to score 3 goals more than Spain today.  So, yeah, Iran has to beat Portugal.

Since Spain beat Iran head to head I thought that would settle it. They would both have 4 points while Portugal would have 5.  What did I miss?

Beer and Queso / Re: World Cup 2018

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Iran is still in the mix in Group B, no?  Neither Spain or Portugal have secured an advance yet. One of them has to, but neither are guaranteed.
That is the way I read it. Iran would have to beat Portugal, though. Any other result leaves them out.

Patrick Sandoval over his last 5 appearances--27 Ks vs just 3 BBs in 25 IP with no ERs. 20 hits allowed.

101 pitches thrown tonight was his career high.

21-year old lefty should be BC bound shortly.

Speaking of TJS, Chad Donato went 5 innings tonight giving up just one hit while whiffing 10 and walking 1. Thru his first 2 outings for the V-Cats, 16 Ks vs 2 BBs in 11 IP and zero ERs allowed.

Donato had his surgery in July 2016 after being drafted the previous month by the Astros in the 11th round. Made his debut last year with 10 appearances split between the Appy and GCL.
At 23, he should be moving up soon.

A harmonic convergence of questionable officiating and serendipitous timing for Senegal. The refs allowed a Senegal substitution just as the Poland team was kicking the ball back to their goalie, presumably to restart their attack. The Senegalese player ran on to the field just in time to intercept the ball, side step the onrushing goalie and kick the ball in to the goal for an easy open netter.
That sucks.

My original statement may have sounded too critical. I didn’t mean it that way. Few players are plus in everything they do. If Kemp continues to hit like this I can live with his arm in the outfield. It isn’t terrible. It just isn’t ideal.

Game Zone 2018 / Re: Rays at Astros, June 18

If you want to look at it that way, I guess you are right. No one is perfect. Unless it is Pujols running, not many LFers are going to throw out a runner from third on a deep fly. So if were talking about a fly ball to LF that is a bit deeper than a fly ball to shallow LF, with less than 2 outs and a man on third that is not Pujols, and Reddick or Marwin aren't playing but Kemp is, than yes, you are correct, his arm becomes a liability.
The original statement was that Kemp's arm was a liability in the OF.  And I agree with that.  I also agree that the liability is limited when he plays in LF, but he has been playing quite a bit in CF, also, where the liability is more significant.  I like what he does at the plate, and with all the other bats in the lineup we do not need the kind of power production from LF that is more "normal" for that position, so on balance, he is an asset for the team.  But we can say all that without pretending that his arm is adequate.

Only if he needs to throw direct to home on a sac fly. Otherwise it's strong enough to hit the cut-off man.
So it’s only a liability when he needs it? My arm is strong enough to hit the cut-off man.
