Taveras' debut rocky
« on: April 03, 2007, 02:13:36 pm »
Woody Paige was not impressed,

Willy Taveras is the new highly acclaimed center fielder, obtained in a trade that cost the Rockies their best pitcher.

In the third inning Taveras didn't run in the correct direction for a ball slapped to center. Double. At the plate he struck out four times. With runners on first and second, no outs, and the Rockies trailing by two runs in the eighth, Taveras couldn't bunt his mates to second and third. A following groundout would have scored one.

Taveras was replaced in center by Steve Finley, who will be there permanently soon enough.

I was on the phone with my mother, who lives in CO and is a Rockies fan, last night, and she was steamed about Willy. Until I reminded her who the trade involved, at which point she said "Jennings? Well, he's not all that great anyway." At that point the Astros were still ahead, so I just laughed with her.

The Rockies had 14 strike outs last night.  I'm thinking I'd take him back (and keep Jennings).

He'll do OK.  He wont K 4 times a night and misplay every fly ball either.  On the other hand, Steve Finley wasn't acquired just to look pretty.   I think it funny that the sports writers there are as a big a ninnies as we have here.  Who said Houston doesn't have big league sports?

Five is also called "Olympic Rings".

"In slang, when a batter strikes out three times in a game, he is said to have completed a "hat trick". If he strikes out four times, it is a "golden sombrero" or a "silver sombrero". He receives the "Olympic rings" for striking out five times and the "horn" for striking out six times in a game - a rare occurrence, which in the history of major league play has only been accomplished in extra innings games."

8 Ks is called DFA.

8 Ks is called DFA.

And 9 K's is called "asked for and received his release"? (aka "Jimerson's private label")

Last night at the game, I noticed that there was a sign that said "Bring Back my Willy" in the upper deck.

I wonder if the fan who made the sign changed his tune after seeing Jennings' performance last night.

Plutonium sombrero would make more sense.  You gotta figure the radiation's getting to him.

Seems not so much a platoon (Finley is LH, they were facing Doug Davis, a LH) as getting a guy some ABs during the first series. I would be shocked if Willy sat 3/5 of the time while Finley, who had a terrible year last year, played. Not sure if there was sarcasm in your post or not.

Left-handed-hitting center fielder Steve Finley received his first start on Wednesday, after Willy Taveras went 1-for-9 with six strikeouts and a walk in the season's first two games.

Finley was signed early in Spring Training to be a backup, after not being able to find a starting opportunity.
