This article sums up the remaining schedules of all the division and wc contenders.
https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/09/mlb-magic-numbers-schedules-9219-yankees-astros-dodgers-closing-on-division-titles-phillies-brewers-gaining-ground-in-nl-wild-card-chase.html (https://www.nj.com/yankees/2019/09/mlb-magic-numbers-schedules-9219-yankees-astros-dodgers-closing-on-division-titles-phillies-brewers-gaining-ground-in-nl-wild-card-chase.html)
First glance at NY's remaining schedule my thought was "crap, a lot of losing teams await them."
Then I looked at Minn's and the Astros' remaining schedule. "Oh yeah. The AL is full of shitty teams."
NY just starting against Texas (rain delay).
Looks like Oakland is off.

Rangers shut out NYY.
-
Rangers shut out NYY.
Deshields hit a 3 run bomb in the 8th.
-
Intellectually and morally I am for the stranger all the way in this series.
-
Rangers manage 2 runs over the last 2 games of their series with NY. The Yankees lead the Astros by 1.5 games in the race for best record in the AL.
And Minn is just 3.5 games back of the Astros.
Oakland beat the Angels. The division lead is 9; magic number is 15.
Tonight the Astros face Seattle, Minn finishes their series in Boston, Oakland and LAA wil wrap things up, and NY has the night off.
ETA: The weekend action includes Cle at Minn and NY at Bos.
-
Oakland hosts Detroit this weekend.
Tonight they're finishing up a suspended game. On May 19 Oakland took a lead in the top of the 7th then the weather set in. So the game was suspended and resumed today- in Oakland- so there's the oddity of a game starting in one city and ending in another.
Baseball is cool.
-
Astros remain 9.5 games ahead of Oakland as they head into their final 4 game series. This will be both teams final matchup against a team with a winning record.
NY has a 3 game set against Detroit. No winning teams on the remainder of their schedule either.
Fading Boston fired Dave Dombrowski. When was the last time that team did anything?
Minnesota dropped to 5.5 back of Astros and Yankees who are tied at 94-50.
Cle is 1.5 back of Oakland for the second wc spot.
ETA: as discussed briefly in the GZ over the weekend, Twins will be without the services of Michael Piñeda for the duration:
https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/twins-michael-pineda-suspended-60-games-after-testing-positive-for-performance-enhancing-drug-masking-agent/ (https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/twins-michael-pineda-suspended-60-games-after-testing-positive-for-performance-enhancing-drug-masking-agent/)

It does seem odd. He's not the reason Sale's arm fell off. Maybe they didn't like the offseason plans he's been laying out, especially re: Betts.

Here's an article from The Athletic:

To me this article is a little vague and repetitive. Can't tell if the owners think the Bosox were falling behind Houston and NY or just pissed about this season and the size of the payroll.

Check out how Cleveland ends the season:
Sept. 10-11: at Los Angeles Angels (2)
Sept. 13-15: vs. Minnesota Twins (3)
Sept. 17-19: vs. Detroit Tigers (3)
Sept. 20-22: vs. Philadelphia Phillies (3)
Sept. 24-26: at Chicago White Sox (3)
Sept. 27-29: at Washington Nationals (3)
First, they should have made hay when they had the chance because that's more above .500 teams than the Astros wil have played all month.
Second, why would the schedule makers put 2 interleague series at the back end of a playoff contender's schedule?
The Tribe is 0.5 back of Oakland and 2 back of TB in the AL WC race.

Yankees all over the Tiggers in game 1 of their twinbill.

There has to be at least one interleague game every night. It has to be someone, might as well be Cleveland.

Heading into the weekend the Astros hold a 7.5 game lead on Oakland for the division. Magic number still 8.
Astros will be in KC. Cole, Grienke, and Miley will start.
Oakland plays Arlington.
The Yankees took 3 of 4 from Detroit. They hold a 2 game lead over Houston for best record in the AL and will play in Toronto.
Cleveland and Minnesota have a big series, mostly from Cleveland's perspective. Twins are 5 games back of Houston.

We cannot hope to beat good teams playing hard with less than our best. Yuli and Correa out, our AAA slugger up in a very crucial AB, Hinh’s stubbornness on testing players, Miley’s woes, injuries to important bullpen pitchers.
The As are damn good and are tough outs no matter who we pitch. The last two games were winnable, but they played and pitched better in crunch time than we did.

I'll worry about all this when the playoffs get here.

I'll worry about all this when the playoffs get here.
We just have to make the playoffs before we worry about that. I think the A's were playing a bit harder than the Astros - like they had more to fight for. I think both teams have a lot to fight for though the A's are under more pressure than the Astros, but that can change when one is lackadaisical.

That's a good point, which I realized after re-reading your post. I apologize. For whatever reason I took your post as being worried about this team come playoff time. I'm concerned, mainly because I want to see the Correas and Presslys of the world make it back...but if we get everyone back I think our boys will step it up when the lights shine the brightest. We were ready to roll last year with the same big lead, coasting into the playoffs. We just had too many players banged up at the end of the day IMO.

No, I am talking about now.

Astros remain 7.5 games ahead of Oakland the weekend's action. They pulled into a tie with NY for the best record in the AL; both teams are 98-53 and both have Monday off.
Astros magic number for the division is 5, to clinch the playoffs is 2.
Astros have a 2 game set with Arlington Tue/Wed, then a weekend series with LAA. Verlander vs Lynn, Cole (not official yet) vs Allard
A's get KC then Arlington (3 games apiece).
NY plays LAA, then Toronto travels to the Bronx. NY's division magic number is 3.
Oakland leads the wc standings. TB is in 2nd 1.5 games back, and surging Cleveland is is 1.5 games behind the Rays. Boston is mathematically alive but just barely.
-
The Cleveland surge seems to be fading a bit.
I would put our top three against them but I have to say Morton and a healthy Snell and Glasnow represent a pretty goddamn fearsome trio.

Some magic number updates...
To clinch wild card game berth: clinched
To clinch AL West / no worse than AL #3 seed: 2 vs. Athletics
- Astros own head-to-head advantage, 11-8
To clinch no worse than AL #2 seed: 4 vs. Twins
- Twins own head-to-head advantage, 4-3
To clinch AL #1 seed: 8 vs. Yankees
- Astros only need to tie the Yankees to clinch due to head-to-head advantage, 4-3
To clinch MLB #1 seed: 8 vs. Yankees, 6 vs. Dodgers
- Astros only need to tie the Yankees to clinch due to head-to-head advantage, 4-3
- Astros only need to tie the Dodgers to clinch due to better intradivision record (currently), 49-18 vs. 43-24; both teams have 9 division games remaining

The number for the Yankees is 8 assuming the tie breaker. 6 for the Dojers.

Head to head means nothing vs the As. The Astros have to win outright or play a 163rd game to determine division winner.
-
NY clinched last night. Now 0.5 games behind the Astros for best record. They host the Blue Jays this weekend.
The Angels come to Houston. Pitching matchups:
Barria vs. Grienke
Sandoval vs. Miley
Rodriguez vs. Verlander
In the wc chase the Rays host Boston (magic number for elimination is 1), the Twins travel to KC, and Cleveland hosts Philly.
Oakland holds a 2 game lead over TB and Cle who have identical 90-63 records.
-
I was surprised to read this is the Yankees' first division title since 2012.
Didn't realize it had been that long; weird to think the Orioles (2014) and Blue Jays (2015) had won the division more recently than the Yankees.

Astros still need one more win to secure at least the 2 seed and a home ALDS. Rotation set for the rest of the season with Cole and Greinke going in Seattle. Miley and Urquidy will go Thursday and Friday in Anaheim, an audition for the postseason roster. Hinch basically said Miley is on the bubble and will have to prove himself on Thursday. Verlander on Saturday, and if Cole has a shot at 20 wins, he'll finish up the season on Sunday. I presume if Sunday means nothing, it'll be a bullpen day and Cole will start Game 1 of the ALDS.

Happy Victory Monday!
As you may have heard, Astros wrapped up the AL West yesterday. They remain 0.5 games ahead of the Yankees for the AL (and MLB) best record. Their magic number to finish better than Minn is 1.
The Astros hit the road with a 3 2 game midweek set against the hated Mariners then close the season with 3 against the Angels. Pitching rotation can be found in the past above.
NY also finishes on the road. They have 2 in Tampa then 3 in Arlington.
The Twins magic number for the central is 3. They get Detroit and KC.
The AL WC race remains tight. The A's are in good position to host the WC game. They hold a 2 game lead over TB and Cle who still have identical records.
Oak: @LAA(2), @Sea(4)
TB: Bos (1), NYY(2), @Tor(3)
Cle: @CWS(2), @Was(3)
Atl and Min start the week with 96 wins. If they reach the century mark there will be 4 100 win teams and 4 100 loss teams. Oak has 94 with 6 to play so they could do it as well.
-
And according to me a half hour ago, Dr. Cabrera.

Point of order...they play two in Seattle then four in Anaheim.

That's what it sounded like to me...And it's not moving guys around, it's sticking with the rotation. Cole would go Game 1 and possibly Game 5 of the ALDS, and Verlander would go Game 2 of the ALDS and open the ALCS, if they made that far. Whoever opens the ALDS likely will not open the ALCS. One will be Verlander and one will be Cole. Decide who you want where. Of course, I could be wrong.

The ALDS game 1's are going to be on Friday Oct 4. So having Verlander going game 1 would be on normal rest. They could go with Cole in game 1 then Verlander game 2 with both being on 5 days rest or Verlander on normal rest and Cole on 6 days rest

That's only if Cole pitches Sunday. If he doesn't, he's on 10 or 11 days off, which seems risky to me. I would think you'd have Cole pitch Sunday no matter what, just to keep things normal for him. But that's not what I read. We'll see what Hinch and Strom have in mind. The bigger question is the fourth starter and whether or not Miley earns a spot.

I had Verlander and Cole flipped in my head for some reason. I bet they have Cole pitch but only 5 innings at the most on Sunday.

If its Verlander and Cole in the first round they will both be going on five days rest. If its Cole and Verlander, Cole will be going on regular rest and Verlander on six days.
-
If its Verlander and Cole in the first round and it goes three or four games, then it can be Verlander and Cole in the second round. If the first round goes five games, then Cole starts the second round and Verlander gets the second game if the interval gives him four days rest.

I was told the would be no math.

Last night's action gives the Astros a 1.5 game lead on the Yankees. Magic number for best record is 4.
CFM goes for the Rays today.
AL WC is tight:
Oak is a half game up on the Rays who lead Cle by a half game.
NL WC is just about set. Was clinched a spot last night; Mil is 5 up on the steM and FTC. Mil is 1 game back of the Nats to host the WC game.
-
Magic number for best record is 4.
4 for sole best record, 3 for home field advantage, against both the Yankees and Dodgers. The Astros’ win last night clinched them a better intradivision record than the Dodgers, so the Astros own the tiebreakers over both teams.

Choi is one those guys that may not have big numbers, but it is uncanny how often he delivers when they need him. I hate it when the Astros play the Rays, I would hate it even more if it were to happen in the postseason.

Milwaukee wins again. St Louis has the day off, so Milwaukee is 1 game out going into the weekend. Milwaukee goes to Colorado for the weekend, while St Louis hosts the Cubs and their 8-game losing streak. Perhaps they'll show a little pride and make things difficult for St Louis.

In non-contender action yesterday, a couple of interesting things.
