Discussion in GZ last night shifted to Reddick.

First,  my bias: I love Josh Reddick.   I wish every player could enjoy their time in MLB as much as Josh seems to have enjoyed his.  He has fun but he's not a flake.  He's intense but not a dick.  He's smart and plays a mean right field.

I also think he should be the right fielder for this team until the last out is recorded.

He's struggling at the plate:

.289 BA in the first half with 10 homers.  .200 in the second half with zero dingers.

Nagging injury?  Mechanical flaw?  Changing book?

Well they pissed away golden opportunity to win a game in Oracle.

Yes,  the refs were so horrible the TV broadcast,  including former ref Steve Javie, called them out for 4 clear and 1 probable landing zone fouls on 3 pointers.   

But when Curry came back in,  Gordon inexplicably didn't challenge him in transition.   Then a barrage of iso 3s.  Missed FTs.  Capela couldn't secure defensive rebounds or handle a clean pass from Harden under the basket. 

GS was ripe.

My wife was going thru some things at her parents home and came across an Astros program from April 7, 1993.  Neither of us remember it,  or even why we were in Houston that day (that was our junior year at Southwestern).  But we definitely went,  as evidenced by my scorecard and some photos she found of her outside the Dome (her first/only trip there).

Holy crap I enjoyed that movie.

As usual I question some of the military strategies (why not blast the single x wing immediately? why put a giant target on the deck of your dreadnought? Why not leapfrog the fleeting rebels?),  but that was a really fun ride.

Overall, I like the wildcard.  The end result is usually a good team making the postseason. And the play in game is probably an equitable way to handicap the wc team vs a division winner.
 
But . . .

The side effect of *every* mediocre team's media/fans thinking they have a shot at playoff glory is a little maddening.

So during the 2004 playoffs I was in an Astros tizzy and wanted to find the "Here come the Astros" song.

My very first Astros game was in 1981, the home opener. They raised the 1980 NL West banner, and lpart of the ceremony included the (I think) debut of that song.   The dude performed it live on the playing field. 9 year old me was completely inoculated: Astros fan for life.

Anyway my web searches in 2004 proved fruitless,  but somehow the phrase "breathing orange fire" led me to Orange Whoopass.   I lurked for a year,  joined in 2005, and this place has been a welcome distraction ever since.

They honored the 97 team this weekend.  I enjoyed Shane Reynolds on the broadcast Friday night and seeing the 97 uniforms Saturday.  I still love that team/ those players. Derek Bell had a kick ass mustache.

I grew up listening to Red Headed Stranger on an 8 track that one of my dad's friends recorded off of his vinyl.  We had the vinyl Kristofferson album; I was in college when I finally found a CD version.  It remains one of my favorite albums of any genre.  For sentimental reasons my favorite version of Me & Willie McGee, and for aesthetic reasons my favorite versions of Sunday Morning Comin' Down and Loving Her was Easier.

 . . . to me.  April 13, 1981 I attended my first Astros game.  Home opener; they unveiled the NL West Banner, sang 'Go Astros', and generally enthralled 9 year old me.  I drew pictures of the scoreboard for 4 months after that. 

Knepper started, got nailed by a liner and had to leave early.  Astros lost in 10 innings 2-1. 

I still remember the teenagers/20somethings sitting in front of us getting drunk and watching the girls get dumber with every inning/beer.  If any of you were born in December '81 or Jan '82 you might want to ask your folks if they went to that game.

Watched most of the Jakes/Brew game on PIP.  Switched over in the 9th in time to hear the Pinella and the pbp guy gushing over the Cardinals.  Then, the coup de gras.
On the last out, the pbp guy reaches into the big bag of overly dramatic Jim Nantz calls and pulls this drivel:

WTF!!?!!!!?!?!?!?  

Come on bbg's.  Don't let that sin go unpunished.  A freaking mediocre team cratering like Rosanne Barr dropped from a great height does not get to be associated with baseball heaven.
