Read on Twitter that Gammons says that Astros and White Sox are talking about an Abreu trade.

+1. What would the benefit to the Astros be?

Here's the video: https://twitter.com/wasteph_wes/status/1009164387066810368

Gammons says the White Sox have been scouting the Astros' organization, leading to speculation [emphasis mine] that the Astros could be interested in Abreu (who they've liked since he came out of Cuba).

He'd be a substantial power upgrade at 1b, but for prospects plus $13M? No way.

I kinda like the Astros’ 1B outlook. I like Yuli there now and I have a man crush on what I think J D Davis can be in the future.
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

I would think any Abreu interest would reflect of a lack of faith in Gattis.

Not saying they can't move him back to 1B, but Alvarez has played 239 innings in LF this year at CC. He has played 1 inning at 1B. He also played more in LF last year, so it seems like the Astros brass envisions him there. Maybe they see an eventual Alvarez/Springer/Tucker OF, once Reddick leaves in a couple years.

I was reading this as more of a lets move Marwin to the strengthen the bench kind of thing after his career year last year.

Am probably wrong as I do not follow as much as many here... but Abreu 1st/DH and Yuli at 1st/3rd and Bregs at 3B/LF --- seems to be aimed at Marwin?  Unless this is a smoke screen and they think they can get Britton and Machado.

Last thing the Orioles want to do is strengthen the Red Sox or Yanks.

FWIW, from Nick Cafardo today:

9. Jose Abreu, 1B, White Sox — There’s been a strong flirtation by the Astros with Abreu. While they’re monitoring the bullpen market, they could easily switch gears and pull this off. If they do, according to one scout, “Print the World Series tickets.”

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Who's going to sit (or get traded)? Yuli? Gattis?

I do not see them trading either. Kaplan said they are focused on the pen if Tucker can hit.

ETA: I’ll set fires if they trade Gurriel.

I call bullshit on this. It makes absolutely ZERO sense. Now, if Gattis had not turned the corner or Yuli was struggling, or worse, someone got injured, then perhaps it makes sense. But with the current state of affairs with this team, this would be a stupid move.

Abreu makes no sense for the Astros now that Gattis has turned his season around.  They could use a good left handed reliever in the pen (Hand or Britton?) or an established closer.  However, Rondon has had success as a closer with the Cubs in the past.   Realmuto would also make some sense, but I wouldn’t expect them to be that active on him until the offseason, once McCann is a free agent.

Lame
Well, it was funny to me, and that what's really important.

Look, all I was attempting to convey was that someone, in July, saying, "print the World Series tickets now," is what is  lame. When it's connected to a trade that doesn't seem necessary it becomes ridiculous. Whether It's scouting or reporting, it is lazy cheap sensationalism and all based on bullshit.

It is a fine example of journalistic sensationalism--presenting information in a way that is intended to provoke public interest and excitement, at the expense of accuracy. I guess lazy and cheap are subject to individual interpretation.

Agreed. The whole idea of the Astros pursuing Abreu makes zero sense. No way can you replace Yuli or Gattis this year.

Gattis has a significantly higher SLG % than Abreau (.517-.450). I wouldn't even consider taking ABs from Gurriel. I don't get it.

Had a good nights sleep to think about this. I still say, that right now, today, this makes no sense. I can believe however that Luhnow has checked on Abreu because he’s a great GM and great GM’s try to cover all possibilities. Abreu is limited to DH or 1B in my opinion. The DH spot is out because of what Gattis is doing and you can’t really play Evan anywhere else. So that leaves first base. Abreu would make sense at first base if there is some potential issue with Correa health wise. It could be that the Astros are worried that Correa’s injury will be a lingering one. Adding Abreu allows you to put Yuli at third and Bregman at short. Another way that Abreu makes sense at first is if Tucker doesn’t pan out in left. While I’m content with Kemp in left, it could be that the front office thinks we need more thump in the lineup come October. Tucker is being given a chance to see if he can supply that thump. If he can’t, it might make sense to move Yuli to left and put Abreu at first.

Just trying to figure out ways this would make sense.

Yeah, it sounds like it could’ve been an off-the-cuff comment from a scout, kinda silly of Cafardo to publish it given the lack of a fit for Abreu in the lineup. You could argue he’s better than both Gattis and Yuli, but you don’t fuck with winning team chemistry and you don’t fix what ain’t broke.

I keep mulling this over in my mind and trying to find ways that this would make sense. I’m sure that any move Luhnow makes will not only be with the playoffs in mind, but with next year and beyond as well. If the brass has decided that resigning Marwin in the off season isn’t in the cards for whatever reason, they could slide Yuli into Marwin’s utility role and let Abreu play first next season. Yuli can play left just like Marwin along with any infield position so it isn’t unthinkable. He probably isn’t as good at short but you could play him at third and move Bregman there for a few games if necessary. Yuli is also going to be better than Marwin at the plate in my opinion. The question is how much will it cost to resign Marwin? I have no clue. I’m sure his season at the plate has hurt him some but he has time to turn that around. Would he get the dollars that Abreu is making now or more? Even if he gets less than Abreu’s current AAV, would you rather have Marwin on a long term deal or Abreu for 2019 and then roster flexibility?? I’m not advocating one way or another, just throwing something out there to think about as the deadline approaches.

Here's my opinion, from another thread

As for Marwin, if he ends up having numbers anywhere close to what they were last year, the Astros might get priced out of the market. He has a ton of value and teams are going to want to add him and some team(s) will be willing to go pretty high. Ben Zobrist went for 4/56 at age 35. If I'm Marwin, that's what I'm starting at and if I'm the Astros I can't go that high.

Marvin would likely need many Bregman type weeks to even get within sniffing distance of his numbers last year.

That is true but he is still in line for a huge payday, perhaps more than the Astros could be willing to pay???? Who knows?? What Marwin can do is valuable, but if Yuli can do the same thing you could avoid a long term expensive deal by letting him take over that role. Abreu might make sense then if that is the plan. It’s just a thought.

Yuli is not going to do what Marwin does. Nor is Tony Kemp, or anyone else on the current roster.

There's only a handful of guys in the whole league that can.

Yuli is a 34-year-old man. Any plan that relies on him spending any significant time at a position that requires mobility is flawed.

This rumor may not have legs. White Sox may look to keep him.....
