1.  Is there something in regards to the Astros' pitchers' approach that is leading to all the HR balls, or is it a case of simply bad pitching?
2.  Seriously... bring up the slumpbuster thread/question.

27 of the 52 draft picks to date have signed (12 of the first 15 rounds are signed).  Jason Castro, the top pick cannot negotiate yet until he is out of the college world series.  Seaton hasn't made up his mind if he wants to go to Tulane or pitch for the Astros.

If those two were to sign, would this be considered one of the most successful drafts in terms of signing by the Astros?  This is unusually quick work by the team for sure.

And... does the above indicate an unusual emphasis on signability, given the need to quickly replentish the talent in the system?

Cecil Cooper, in his first full year as a major league manager, has had some growing pains that have been evident.  In this current losing streak by the team, much has been said about the schedule being unfavorable to the team and thus the five consecutive series losses.

Is the fact that Cooper is in his inaugural tenure as manager hurting the team to be able to come out of the slump in any way or is he a convenient scapegoat for what really ails this club: the pitching staff is currently not performing well at all (sans last night when the offense decided to take the night off)?

Chacon claims he got leg cramps by the third inning due to the MMPUS being unusually hot.  Fans have been complaining that the MMPUS does not have the same air conditioned feel this season and that it is indeed hot in that place.

Is Pam Gardner turning the air conditioner off in the MMPUS to save on operating cost this year?

Pence is not a leadoff hitter.  His average drops from .330 to .246 when he is moved from the 6 spot to the 1 spot.  His OBP drops from .378 to .262.

As soon as I type this, you guys start talking about it.

Ok, you guys started in on the Pence in the leadoff spot conversation, then you got off on another subject.  Who should be in that spot?

Why do the Angels (Castro and Hernandez) have it in for the Astros?  Does this prove that God hates our team?

Well, the Astros would thank you... but the point was who do you find attractive that probably very few will ever see in the same light.

Mad??  haha.  I didn't get mad.  You guys brought up the problem, but didn't give any possible solutions.  Just wanted to see what options you guys thought would be better.

What is the ratio of John Granato ads vs. non-John Granato ads on this station?  Geez.

Mad??  haha.  I didn't get mad.  You guys brought up the problem, but didn't give any possible solutions.  Just wanted to see what options you guys thought would be better.

The reality is that there are few options other than be patient with Michael Bourn or move Matsui out of his comfort zone and make him leadoff.  The problem with Matsui is that many have pointed out that he has a poor OBP set of stats for his career.  Matsui is patient, but he will put bat on ball a lot and that drops his OBP unless he hits for a very high average.  Erstad has leadoff in his career (AL ball though) and could do that for a stretch, but Erstad is not an every day player any more.  He would lose his effectiveness given more time.

Pence is a hacker and if nobody cares about that, then leave him at leadoff and hope for the best.  But when the top four guys were mashing (Tejada, Berkman, Lee and Pence), Bourn and Matsui weren't doing much other than take a ton of pitches.  They made the pitcher work, so the guys behind them got to see the pitches they needed to see to know what approach to take to the plate.

Moving Bourn out and inserting Pence has changed Matsui's game, so now Tejada, Berkman and Lee will see less in terms of what a pitcher is doing.  Plus Pence is getting carved up as a leadoff because it is totally different to grip it and rip it as a leadoff than hitting behind Tejada, Berkman and Lee when those guys are gettiing on-base and mashing.

Superb job, as usual, Zipp.  Have the hosts commented on not having a lot of callers from the site?
